We came down for summer vacation and this place was just a short distance from where we stayed so one night after dinner, we decided to stop and pick up ice cream on the way home. The parking lot was packed but we managed to find a spot. Theres about 8 spots or so off the side road so pulling in can be tricky if people are trying to leave or get out of their cars. The line moved quickly. They have a huge variety of different kinds of ice cream. Lots of flavors and styles to choose from. There were 4 of us. We ordered a large chilly (like a blizzard), 2 small chillys and a small candy shop sundae. It took several minutes for them to make the ice cream but the shock came when it was time to pay. I guess it's my fault for not really paying attention to the prices but we paid $40 for 4 items. The small size chillys are $8, a large is $10. For $40, I'd expect the ice cream to be more than what you'd get at a place like Dairy Queen or Rita's but to be honest, it was just okay. Honestly, there's nothing going on here at Custard Hut that's noteworthy or surprising. It's your typical small town old school drive up ice cream shop. Just to get the ten thousand pound gorilla out of the way, let's talk briefly about the prices. While not located on the boardwalk this place charges boardwalk style prices with boardwalk sized portions. In other words if you're looking for value you might want to go somewhere else because it's not happening here. Unless they start serving sundaes on a shovel Uncle Buck style the value ratio here is way off. For an apples to apples to comparison they charge about fifteen percent more for a milkshake that's probably fifteen to twenty percent smaller than a place that's local to me. Caveat Emptor. PRETTY SURE IT'S CASH ONLY - but there is an ATM on site. Creamy custard, as good as it gets. Smooth Italian ice, saturated with flavor. When you cross over the causeway from Ocean City to the mainland, you don't leave all the ice cream shops behind. In fact one place has become very popular over the years because it offers convenient parking and fair prices and is very close to the entrance to the Garden State Parkway. That place would be Custard Hut in Somers Point. They have both soft serve as well as hard ice cream and offer many additional concoctions utilizing these tasty treats. My personal favorite is a soft serve strawberries & cream cone. The flavor is outstanding and just right on a summer day! Really GREAT, very friendly staff. The custard is delicious. And the homemade seasonal ice creams are the best. We've been going there for years and years. The chili flavors are so good. It's always a difficult choice what to order. My all time go-to order has always been the chocolate soda. It's a nice option. Ice cream, chocolate syrup and seltzer. Until, they took it off the menu. Although you can order a root beer or Coke float it is not an even swap. The soda is bottled. Fountain sodas are the real deal. Please bring back the seltzer for the ice cream sodas. read more

Came here on a hot summer night for some ice cream and my experience was pretty good. Ever since COVID started it seems like they have a pretty organized and cute way of social distancing everyone standing in line by drawing circles on the ground with numbers to let you know where to move next. Seating is also plentiful and far away from each patron and felt pretty safe in my opinion. I grew up going to Custard Hut because they are a local legend. Their blended ice creams with the candies, the gelati (water ice and soft serve), and their milkshakes are fantastic. Unmatched. Their quality is 100% consistent. It never wavers from season-to-season, and they really do deliver the product true to who they are--a local business. However, I had to zing them a couple stars for several reasons. At the end of the day, this is a window ice cream shop--not a gourmet parlor. It is also on the mainland, not in the tourist town of Ocean City. So the prices really need to reflect that. In the last couple seasons, their prices have sky-rocketed, while their sizes have gotten smaller. My parents are also small business owners, so i will be the first to say that when the prices on ingredients go up for the business owner, then they have to raise their product's prices to make a profit. But their prices have changed rapidly and drastically, and their business really hasn't been hit by the economy in the last 6 years. Their regulars are still their regulars, and their lines have not noticeably dwindled since 2008. So the skyrocketing prices are a turn-off to the consumer. Furthermore, I find the staff her a little snappy. I get it...it's summertime, it's hot, the lines are huge, and customers can be incredibly annoying sometimes (I worked at a much busier window ice cream establishment on the OC Boardwalk for several years, so I definitely sympathize). But that is no excuse to take customers' orders with a frown, angrily slam the order windows shut, and roll your eyes. You work in the food industry--there's a certain level of patience you should possess. (Side note: this goes to some of the employees, not the owners, who are incredibly sweet) My last time here last summer, I was really turned off. I ordered the same thing I have been getting for years-- a cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt in a dish. I asked for half chocolate sprinkles, half rainbow. The girl at the counter gave me an exasperatedly look and snarkily asked: "You want BOTH sprinkles?" (as if I had asked her to cook me steak and potatoes) "Yup." "Uh, okay, I guess." (snickers) I paid for my order, and when she handed over my change, as I was about to put money in the tip jar, she slammed the window ON MY HAND. Um, okay...she then audibly told another coworker about "how dumb" it is to get both flavors of sprinkles. Not only was my order NOT difficult to make (pushing up the lever to pour yogurt into a cup, and then throwing sprinkles on it), that behavior is completely inexcusable. This is not to say that I will never come here again, but I was just really disappointed. You expect this behavior at a chain restaurant (like a Dairy Queen or a Sonic), not a well-respected local business. read more

This is a small local ice cream joint similar to a Dairy Queen. The ice cream is decent(not great) but the prices and the service are out of whack. I used to get the candy shop(basically a simple sundae) with mint chocolate chip ice cream and Oreos which is over $6. Then they seriously started skimping on the toppings so I had to add for extra Oreos which bumped the price to over $7 which is ridiculous. My boyfriend and I used to always put a few dollars in the tip jar (he's a server) but after the consistent rude attitude of the employees, even he agreed that there were better ways to spend our money. I've been going to OCNJ for 20 years and never went here until Sunday night! It was there last night and they were doing buy one get one free. We got four large cups of soft serve with sprinkles for $8. It was delicious and the lady who took our order was fantastic. They have a huge menu! I can't wait to go back next season. read more
