This place has totally redeemed itself. I never wrote a review last year but I went and it was absolutely awful. I will say this is one of the first places that I think actually took into account the reviews (good and bad) and actually improved upon them. This place used to be Clancy's and is now somewhat of a Mexican fusion restaurant with awesome drinks and amazing food. When I went last year, there were so many things that were missing the mark- the music (they were playing 96.9 lite rock), the food (barely edible) and drinks (too much sour mix). I went here the past two weekends and was legit blown away with the improvements. So amazingly good. We spoke with some of the employees who told us that they got a new chef - he was definitely 100% worth the money. It used to be that Sofias was the only place you could get a fresh grilled Branzino. This blew Sofias out of the park. Amazing drinks, amazing service, awesome food, great music... 10/10! Loved it. **It's def a darker atmosphere so make sure you watch where you step. Mexiquila is a classy Mexican restaurant with a focus on tequila & spice, but definitely caters to an American palate. They now take reservations which are a must since this place has been very busy. The restaurant is quite large, but they're limited on servers so you'll see a lot of empty tables. I experienced slow service during my visit on Monday night. For the food, I ordered the Quesabirria tacos & someone in my group ordered the Korean BBQ tacos, but our plates were swapped. I didn't realize this until we were done eating when I wondered where my consommé broth was. The taco dishes consist of 2 small tacos so these didn't take long to finish. This wasn't indicated on the menu & for $18 a plate, I thought it'd be more filling. For an extra $3 you can also have a salsa flight if you're down for the up-charge, but I wasn't. To drink, I went with the 21Seed Margarita made with a cucumber & jalapeño purée & tequila. This was served in a short glass, but was very tasty and $14. I would've ordered another cocktail if the waitress would've stopped by again. I had to ask the busser to grab her for a to go order & the check once we were all finished. Overall, I'd return to try another entree option, but I'm not in a big hurry to. read more

Been wanting to try for a while. First of all the place is beautiful. Very tastefully done. Stands out from any other place in the area. We chose to sit at the bar and were fortunate to have Austin make recommendations for the menu. Everything he recommended was on point and delicious. We were there early because well we are at that age where going out at 430 isn't a crazy idea anymore lol. Started with tapas specials that are available 4-530. We got baked clams which was a Mexican take on clams casino but was really good. The other was short rib spring roll. Nice way to try it. Appetizer was the calamari that Austin highly recommended because it's fresh and they cut it up themselves. It was very good. Entrees were Korean bbq beef which was excellent and plentiful. Mine was pork tenderloin and pork belly with pineapple on house made soft corn tortilla. Both were very tasty. I saved room for dessert. Tres leche donut with vanilla ice cream (recommended by Austin). What a nice ending to the meal. Next time I may start with dessert. Everyone was very nice. Will be back for sure. read more

Generally the food here is very good. I have never been disappointed, well that is, until last night. The appetizers we great. We ordered the dip board and the Piña Reposado. Both excellent. I ordered the WILD MUSHROOM STUFFED POBLANOS (VG) $32 hen of woods, oyster mushroom, mole amarillo, arroz blanco The poblano was tiny yet delicious. Along side it were two batter dipped and deep fried mushrooms. I wasn't even sure that is what they were because they were impossible to cut and one bite told me they tasted like fried dough. $32 for a tiny delicious entree with two awful fried dough mushrooms which were nothing more than a garnish seemed quite a lot of money. We then ordered the Churro bread pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert. That was also delicious. All in all it was a nice night out with friends, the food was delicious, except the fried mushrooms. Hopefully my feedback is taking constructively and the fried mushrooms disappear as a garnish and they add a second poblano to the entree. read more

The food was absolutely delicious! My dad even said the tacos were the best he's ever had! I had a yummy Mexicano Street Bowl without any extra protein since I also had some of the appetizers we ordered for the table. The Dip Flight was great - I do think it could have used a tad bit more chips though. I gave this restaurant 3 stars due to some kinks they need to work out with their service - with the hope that next time I can move this up to 5 stars. We had a reservation on a Tuesday night for 5 at 6:30 pm. When we arrived they had to see if they had a table for us, but said we could look outside in the self seating area. I found this odd since we had a reservation. We did check out the outside space, but the only spots available were at the bar and on the couches, which was not going to work for us for dinner with my 5 year old. We let the hostess know that we definitely wanted to wait for our inside table. After about 10 minutes of waiting I checked in and they said they had a table ready for us, but the server was busy. We did notice an open 6-top table, but that's not where they sat us almost 25 minutes after our reservation time! They sat us at a 4-top with a chair on the end that had just opened up. I used to work in a restaurant as a hostess and a waitress and I understand you want to strategically seat your groups, but if someone has a reservation, you honor it! The other strange thing was our food came out super fast, like even before our appetizers. Our waitress apologized many times and you could tell she was genuinely sorry and confused at how it happened. Not a huge deal, but certainly something else they need to figure out. read more

I came here shortly after the place opened, and decided I'd never come back. A lot of people I've spoken to said the same, especially because of the price point for sub-par food. I saw a new menu posted, and decided to give it a try again a year and a half later. Wow am I glad I did, and I can't wait to come back. While service still lacked, in the same way since opening (slow and inattentive) the dishes compensated and then some. So many unique flavors and small execution twists to Mexican-American fare leaning on the traditional Mexican side. There is nothing like this cuisine in the area. Elote Fritters, Chicken Tinga Eggrolls, and Fried Shrimp and Calamari were the standout appetizers, and still so many other starter options I can't wait to order next time. The filet was so tender, and the accompanying Garlic Cassava Purée (I had to go look at the menu again to remember what it was even called) was unbelievable. I could have eaten a bowl of it by itself! Better than any mashed potato or root vegetable purée I've had in any high end steakhouse. The fish tacos were delicious with a mild tasting lightly battered white fish, and the accompanying ingredients stood out as the main flavors, I'd be happy with that apple slaw as a stand alone salad. The side of potatoes were so crispy without being dry or over cooked, I don't know how they did it, and the sauce they were served on was unbelievable. They were served with a side of sauce that no one at the table really even touched because the potatoes were so good on their own with the brown sauce they were served in. Plantains served with an Agave Butter were maybe the best tasting bite of the night, and they were up against tough competition. A bit on the sweet side, and I'd order them for dessert instead of with the entrees next time. In terms of value, if you're looking for a nice dinner out for a date night, with family, or a large group willing to share dishes to experience a lot of different flavors, look no further. In this economy I'd be happy to spend my money here, and will be fighting the urge to come back again tomorrow. I was worried there was no kids menu, but in the words of my picky eater 3-year old "everything is so nummy and very delicious!" I'd come back even just for the plantains. Get the plantains. Get an extra order of them to take home. Skip lunch and save room, portions are larger than you'd expect. See you again soon Mexiquila! read more

The space is cute and the drinks are good. But consider this more of an app, drink, and hang spot than a Mexican restaurant. The food not only is NOT authentic but it's not even trying. The best example is the tortillas which are translucent and taste like they were melted then flash fried. The vegan salad for me was inedible, however, the nachos were good.... Take from that what you will. However, staff is nice and the space is great for a hang specifically outside. read more

My friends and I got dinner at Mexiquila tonight and had a great time. There were a few tiny bumps in the road, but overall we enjoyed ourselves and our food. Our server was nice and helped us out when ordering. She checked on us often and got us anything we asked for in a timely manner. The restaurant itself is really nice and has a cool atmosphere. Despite the parking lot being filled up when I got there, there seemed to be plenty of tables and servers so we were able to sit right away. I saw a few reviews saying they didn't honor their reservation, but that wasn't the case for us. Our reservation was at 6pm and we were seated right on time despite how busy they were. The guac, street corn & nachos with queso were delicious so I would definitely recommend those appetizers. Unfortunately, our nachos arrived with a hair on it but our waitress took care of it and got us a new order of nachos and also took it off the bill which was nice of her. I ordered the Koren BBQ short rib tacos and they were good but I'll probably want to try something different if I come again. I also ordered the Tropical Coconut Margarita and I liked it a lot. I could taste the tequila but it was still enjoyable. My friend got the Lobster Tacos for her meal and the butter made it very messy, so she would have preferred to be able to dip her tacos in the butter instead because there was literally butter everywhere. For dessert, I got the churro in the tres leches sauce. I prefer my churros to be a bit crispier but, because they were in the sauce, they were a bit soft but still tasted pretty good. Overall, we all enjoyed the experience and had a great time; not the best Mexican food, but the vibes are good! I do also want to mention that it is a bit expensive, so keep that in mind if you come to Mexiquila! read more

As a long time local and a previous employee for years at the establishment that resided prior to this one, my expectations have been exceeded! I am so elated to see this new trendy, out of the ordinary restaurant (in comparison to the competition with a slew of American style SP dive bars) has seemingly taken off with great success. It's a different style of cuisine, a trendy, modern take on Mexican, that has definitely gotten the locals interested. The space has always been beautiful and enormous with such potential and I think its potential has finally been met. We tried all of the tacos, because you try em all til ya try em all! The quesabirria spring rolls, fresh scallop ceviche with pomegranate seeds, and chilled chili pineapple- each so unique and the flavor was there. The cocktails are excellent and the ambience is perfect for a night out with girlfriends or a fun night with family. So happy to see this new ownership seizing the moment. Glad I was wrong :) We passed this place a few times since opening but our selling point was the vegan items on the menu. There's very limited vegan options in the area, and no Mexican vegan options at all so this is a wonderful addition. I got the vegan tacos which were so good! Yes the place is a little on the pricey side but the ambiance is stunning, drinks are strong, service was nice, and menu is inclusive. My only critique would be upping the portion sizes or having sides included with the tacos. I know this location in sp has a high turn over rate but im really hoping they stay.
