The self-ordering kiosk definitely wasn't very user-friendly, or maybe it's just the one on the right side that has issues. After we placed our order, the owner seemed frustrated and a bit grouchy. I'm still not entirely sure what went wrong since our credit card went through and we even received a receipt. In the end, he had to cancel the entire order and redo it on the left iPad because, for some reason, the order never showed up on his system. After sorting everything out, we waited another 15 minutes for our food. We ended up taking our order to go since the restaurant is very small, with only one table outside. But tbh, It was absolutely delicious. I think this might be the best Japanese curry we've ever had, even better than the old Curry House days (RIP). You can customize your bowl by choosing the rice size, white or brown rice, and up to three toppings. We added an omelet egg, chicken karaage, and pork cutlet, and everything was fantastic. Finally made it to Curryfornia in North Torrance and it might be the best curry we've had. Russ ordered egg, bruschetta, broccoli, and karaage over brown rice with hot curry. I got egg, fukujinzuke, corn, and natto over brown rice with medium curry. The curry had such a great balance of spice and flavor and you could really taste the depth in the sauce. Everything worked well together with the toppings. The karaage was also a standout. I'm a little picky about karaage, but this one was perfectly seasoned and the texture was exactly what we like. Crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Ordering is done on a touch pad and the food is brought out to you, which makes the whole process really easy. They don't use the typical curry block and I really appreciate the depth of flavor in their curry. It's a no frills, small spot in a plaza with a few seats inside and outside. I ordered a medium-size dish with rice, medium-spicy flavor, and an omelet-style egg over the rice. As for toppings (you can choose up to 3 for free), I selected broccoli, red pickle, and corn. It's an unassuming joint, you'll walk into the store that's seemingly unmanned with just two kiosks, but once your order goes through, you'll hear the owner start cooking. It's takeout food, and it can seem somewhat pricy for what it is, but it really is a lot of food with plenty of curry and great portions for the toppings. I had the medium sized rice which was more than enough, and had it cooked inside an omelette as well as some tonkatsu alongside some of the complimentary toppings. The curry is kept separate but me being bad at ratios admittedly couldn't keep it good and even, but that's more of a me problem. It can be slightly salty, so do balance it well. If you're going there M-F during the lunch rush, be sure to get there before noon, because the line quickly gets long! You order on an iPad, and simply wait for your order number. First off let me just say that if you are a fan at all of Japanese curry, this is by far one of the best I have ever tasted. It is rich and savory and very filling. If you have never had Japanese curry it is slightly similar to a thick American stew over rice (but curry is way better). Curryfornia is by far one of my favorite places in all of Los Angeles. I live in the San Fernando Valley and will make sure to make the trip at least a few times a year. The menu is simple and ordering is easy. You use a self service machine (the owner/chef will help if needed) you pick your size, the spice level of your curry, your toppings, and extras (I recommend Japanese omelet and pork katsu). The food here is simply amazing. If you're in the area I would highly recommend trying it. The only downside to the place is that they lost the dining room area of their building during the pandemic. They do have two small tables outside their restaurant if you want to eat there after picking up your food. You have 4 sizes to choose from (S-XL) of rice sizes (white.brown) or baguette. And then add 3 free toppings to add to your curry. You can choose your curry spice level (mild-extra hot). And then pay to add an extra topping like meat or egg omelette of your choice for an added cost. My go to is a small white rice (200g) with bacon chips, boiled egg, and fried onion or sweet corn with medium curry. I always go for that extra topping of the chicken cutlet, sometimes the pork cutlet which is $4 more. So what makes this different is that because it is to go, everything is placed separately. Meaning the curry isn't drenched over the rest of the dish so I get to control the amount of curry I get to enjoy. Another bonus? There is already some meat in the curry which just adds more texture to the meal. This has literally became my favorite Japanese curry place. CURRYFORNIA over Coco Ichibanya any day! I went to Curryfornia after being promised the best Japanese curry in the area. As I arrived, I was greeted by a sparse interior, with two order kiosks and basically nothing else. There were only two small tables situated outside the shop and everything seemed to be takeout only. Ordering is pretty easy and there is good customization with the toppings after you select the base size. The only interaction you have with the owner is during order pickup. During the day I went, they actually opened a couple of minutes early. I was the first order and it took about 10 minutes for the food to be ready. Large Curry, Medium Spicy w/ Fukujinzuke, Sweet Corn, Broccoli, Pork Cutlet ($19.25) - The curry here is definitely home made and not from a box mix. It's slightly sweet with a bit of heat and a rich savoriness. There are chunks of somewhat tender beef mixed in. I do feel like the curry is a bit on the salty side but overall it's very flavorful. The tonkatsu, which costs $4.50 extra, has a good exterior crisp. The interior is pretty lean but there are a small amount of fattier portions. Unfortunately the meat is kind of dry. When eaten with the curry, if there is any seasoning on the pork, it doesn't show since the curry flavor and saltiness overwhelms things. That's not a bad thing since you're going to a curry shop for the curry in the first place. Although, to be honest, I actually don't recommend getting the tonkatsu - it's not very good for being so expensive. If you get any of the fried toppings, you should eat your food immediately at the tables outside. Fried items do not do well while being steamed in the takeout container and bag. The rice doesn't seem to be short grain, instead it may be a medium grain calrose, given how the individual grains aren't that distinct. Still, it goes well with the curry. Price-wise this is really expensive for a takeout only place with minimal human interaction. (4/5) Would I go here again? I'm not sure, given how expensive the meal is. $20 for a sit down curry meal might be reasonable after tax and tip, but $20 for takeout? Ehhh... I went for the pork and chicken katsu with the egg omelette and cheese, medium spice, while my husband went for the pork katsu, fried chicken, fried fish AND sausages - extra spicy - and I am so glad he did. First of all, let me just say how incredibly fast and kind the older man was. I am pretty sure he was the only one working that hot line and he got everything ready within 10 minutes and didn't miss a thing. He even had it all packaged up nicely for us in a cardboard box! Once we got home, we dived in... It's been a week and let me just say, I can't stop thinking about that curry sauce. It's savory, spicy and incredible.
