This was my first time coming in. I have passed by so many times, but this was the time that I actually needed ammo and a pry bar at the same time and I really didn't want to go to 2 separate stores today. I walked in and it felt very much like the old hardware shop that I grew up going to in NC. I walked in and asked the guy if they had a certain ammo, he walked me right to it which was great then I asked if they carried pry bars and he showed me their location. I grabbed what I needed, bought both things, and was out in probably under 5 minutes. Pretty good prices for a small business and the man at the front was really nice. It's a very traditional shop that my husband's grandparents used to go to, then his father and then him. We take our son there now. It is running by the 3rd generation of owners, same family. These or not what they used to be one of the owners passed away and they are not the good old boys that used to be. My dad was friends with them and I called them as I have some very rare and valuable Colts and swords etc. that people are looking for and desperate to find and they were very disinterested and cut me off at the pass and just told me to put them online and auction them myself. This to the daughter of a personal friend with amazing items was a personal friend of theirs! So rude! If are were looking for rare things don't go there just look online they aren't interested in items. If they aren't interested in buying or consigning as they aren't interested in selling to you if they do not want items in store - especially when an expert in the field that passed away and they had no interest in his collection. I was shocked when I entered Curry's to find only one sales associate wearing a mask. That associate only wore the mask over his mouth and did not cover his nose. There was no social distancing. I asked the sales associate if he believed the Covid-19 virus was real. He asked my why I thought that. I responded he and the others were not wearing masks. He said he didn't need to wear a mask because he washes his hands. REALLY!!!!! It is this kind of ignorance of the virus transmission propagating the Covid-19 virus and hindering the return of some kind of normalcy until the vaccine is developed. I walked out of the store, never to return. I don't feel businesses not keeping their clients safe deserve to be supported. read more

We first went into Curry-Thomas Hardware looking for a way to lock our beautiful old wood framed windows. Apparently at some point some of the locks had just been removed and, due to age, the locks that remained didn't line up well enough to actually secure the windows. I'm the kind of person who prides herself on a home-invader-free living space, so this was a situation we needed to get under control. The salesman we first spoke to could not have taken our problem more seriously. After talking to us for twenty minutes and showing us a few options [of various levels of handyman skill] he convened a mini huddle of the store staff to brainstorm with us about solutions. The result of 15 minutes of intense debate among five career hardware store employees and a few random contractors with time to kill? A solution that would cost about 60 cents per window and do zero damage to our rented home's antique window frames. While the prices in general won't be as low [nor will you have as many options] as in the monster chain stores, the old school customer service is worth it if you happen to pay a little more for something. Especially for those of us who know little to nothing about these types of things [cough]. They also carry [and fix!] guns according to the signs, so there's that. And don't worry, while there is obviously a bit of a club among the staff and regulars, they are totally welcoming and respectful to those not in the club. read more

Do not use this gunsmith talks down to people and thinks he knows more than what the manufacturer does I have tried to use him but they way he talked down to me I went all the way to the other side of jacksonville with my gun took to green acres sporting goods they didn't try to talk down to me just ask me the problem fixed it in one day read more

So I'm in the store to purchase some firearm accessories. I was all alone approx 10' back from the counter and on a phone call, I run a business and can't just ignore my employees when they call. A guy comes out and asked if he can help me, I raised my finger to say give me a few minutes please. Again I wasn't at the counter nor did I ask for help. Once I hang up I go to him to apologize and he said he found it "incredibly rude" I told him I did not ask for his help and I wasn't bothering anyone no one was around when I got the call. No reason to talk to me like that. I went out of my way to go here and stay away from the big chain stores. I will now go out of my way to go elsewhere what a shame. Guys at Fort Surplus recommended this place to me because I'm pissed at the folks at St. Nicholas for giving me stinkeye every time I give them business. This place was like stepping back into the 50's, and not in a " colored drinking fountain" kind of way. There were a couple of old guys chatting with the gunsmith, a couple of old guys chatting with the cashier, everyone I passed by said howdy. So the gun counter guy greets me with a "howdy can I help" and then he sees I have a box in my hand and says " oh you're the guy with the sights that need putting on." So he takes a look at the gun and concluded what I already knew, that my gun is a PITA to put new sights on, but if i didn't mind waiting, he'd give it a whack. So he finished some other business and I sat and listened to people talk about politics and some guys who should know better call 1911 magazines "45 magnum clips." I sat in a row of mismatched chairs, only thing more country about this setup would have been a nice wood burning stove. So after about 45 minutes the guy comes out with my gun and explains what he did and apologized for the color not matching exactly. I just nodded because I couldn't tell. From what I could see he had done a very professional job of custom altering my slide and installing night sights. Cost was a lot more than St. Nicks, but I don't think they would have the know how to put sights on anything but the big three. Anyways, since it's not a chain store prices aren't going to be Wal-Mart cheap, but you are going to get a personal experience. I plan on going back. read more

I first shopped here in the 70s. I lived right in the area. I started coming in again about 6 years ago when I moved back in the area. I like it because it is a true hardware store like back in the 50s and 60s. Yes I'm a senior. Though I'm African American they have always treated me very well. I think they are better than the big box stores. Personal and very good service. They don't treat me like I'm about to steal a shovel or or something. I plan to go in today. Oldschool, Oldtimers who know what they're doing. This is the type of hardware store I grew up going to when something needed fixing around the house. Everything you need and nothing you don't need. Unfortunately, last of a dying breed of true hardware stores. But still offers as much as the huge retail chains. Difference is the men in this store know what they're talking about because they've done it before. Hands down the best and least expensive place to get keys made. This has got to be the friendliest gunshop and hardware stores in Jacksonville. I won't shop anywhere else. They've forgotten more about hardware than all the chain stores in town put together. I needed to get some washers to repair an antique faucet in an old home we've been renovating, and they knew exactly what I needed when no one else did. They are the only place I've been able to get a lot of specialty items, including skeleton keys and other fixtures. I can't say I've saved any money though- because I've spent what I've saved in the gun department!!!! I guess they do kinda have valet parking...I feel as though it's my private store because of the service I get. read more

This is the first store that opened in 1946. It started out as a gun shop that morphed into a hardware chain of sorts. The inside is adorned with enough mounts that the zoo would be proud but surely not peta. Everything from deer, water buffalo, pigs/boars, to animals like gazelles, antelopes, I think i even saw a few 4 legged friends like a panther or a leopard. I went and have been going here when I'm in the area and need anything in the hardware field. They make the best keys and my old job I needed a ton of keys. I have never taken one back cause it didn't work. They cut their keys by hand and a machine of course but they work every time. The guys behind the counter are always willing a helpful hand or to give advice. They also have had the same guys working there for the 20 years or so that I have been going there and that is for all of the stores. Same folks and the same friendly customer service. read more

If you need Gunsmithing services find someone else to do it. I recently took a rifle in for a simple repair and in the 2 months that they had the gun they had not even ordered the part necessary for the repair. I picked up the rifle and took it across town to another gunsmith and it was repaired in 24 hours. read more

I'm 66 and grew up in Wilmington, NC. The first time I walked into Curry-Thomas Hardware, I had to pinch myself. No, I wasn't dreaming and my '55 chevy wasn't still parked out front. But it was like walking back into a REAL American Hardware store. The staff at Curry-Thomas are the nicest, most sincere people you will ever meet in the Jacksonville area. And whatever your problem, they'll do their absolute best to help you find a solution and the part or product to go with it. That goes for Sporting Goods and firearms as well. Now, don't expect a Disney World atmosphere back in the gun section like most firearms dealers. This is old-school, calm and courteous Curry-Thomas Hardware. Sure, there's probably a little group of "regulars" discussing the latest hunting trip, or politics...but they're the nicest bunch of folks you'd ever want to meet. Do yourself a huge favor...find something in the house that needs fixin', then get in the car and drive over to Curry-Thomas Hardware. And plan to stay a little while. You'll find yourself browsing the aisles looking at hardware items you were sure you'd never see again. This truly is one of Jacksonville's best little secret spots. read more
