    Currywurst FTW!

*in rythm Leader: What do we want?! Group: CURRYWURST! Leader: When do we want it?! Group: NOW!!! Leader: What do we want?! Group: CURRYWURST! Leader: When do we want it?! Group: NOW!!! It seemed like we walked miles trying to find this quick snack before the boozing began. Glad we stumbled across this popular joint. It was well worth it. For my first time having currywurst, they did not dissapoint ...actually, it was just one guy running the show. And quick. The amount of fries with drink and the deep fried brat smothered with ketchup and curry powder was simply amazing, both in flavor and price. I could've easily ordered another combo, but I had to control myself. The addictive properties of this "fast food" is unlike any others that I've encountered. This kind of "simple, tasty, and cheap" is hard to come by in California. Time to protest. Leader: What do we want?! Group: CURRYWURST! Leader: When do we want it?! Group: NOW!!!

You can order currywurst and other items by itself, or as a combo/meal which comes with cries and/or a drink (water, or soda or beer, the cost is the same!). Standing room only with inside L-shaped and outside high rectangular tables. This was a one-man operation the entire time we were there. From taking orders to cooking to serving to cleaning. At one point the line was out the door to the sidewalk. He efficiently moved the line along until there was no line! Bonus review: First time I tried currywurst and was not expecting how good it was. A cut up fried hot dog drizzled with ketchup and curry powder. Separately, each flavor (sweet, salty, sour, curry) was too strong but together they balance each other out. It's a good item to have before or after drinking.

Oh wow! Only just remembered that we went to this as well while we were in Berlin. In fact we popped in several times when we got peckish, as it was attached to our hotel. Now evidently I haven't partaken in the sausage (stop sniggering back there) because I don't eat meat, but I can confirm that the pommes here are excellent. As is the curry sauce, the ketchup and the spiced salt they pile them with. Delish. Oh and I can also tell you through my carnivore boyfriend that the sausage is supreme. In fact, there's a famous currywurst place in Kreuzberg which always has queues right down the street. And Chris is firmly of the belief that our little Curry Mitte, right below our hotel room proudly displaying an awesome Fight Club poster, is miles better. So is it Mitte's best kept secret? Who knows! All I know is that if you're staying your last night in the Circus Hotel, you've got Becks Lime on ice upstairs and you're watching some laptop TV, you can easily snaffle two portions of pommes. Yum.

What better place to end a "currywurst for dinner everyday" streak than at Curry Mitte? Answer: None. This is the place to go for a hassle-free, simple, delicious bite to eat. In total contrast to the sit down dinners I'd been used to during the rest of my trip, Curry Mitte is almost like a breath of fresh air. Or, well, greasy air because wow does it smell heavenly in here! You can even see them grilling the sausages and frying everything behind the glass. The currywurst is served cut up into small rounds, doused with ketchup and a healthy sprinkling of curry powder, of course. Fries are cut into thicker, American style bistro like fries. Taste of perfection as the sausage had a nice juicy flavour accented with the wonderful spice of the curry powder. Fries were crispy enough but they really are just the sidekick to the superhero of this dish. Simple yet delicious. I tried my best at ordering in German again and ultimately failed (again) but the guys working there were really friendly and switched to English for me. It didn't take long to order and it look even less to get my food. I wanted it for takeaway and they didn't really have any special boxes for that. Instead they did their best to wrap everything up in foil so it wouldn't spill on my walk home. It held decently well but I appreciated their effort more than anything. Location is small but if you prefer to eat in they have a countertop area inside as well as some tables outside. If you're in the area this is a definite must-try!

This was my first time trying Currywurst so I don't know how much better it could potentially get. Seemed pretty standard, a hotdog cut up with a mound of ketchup and some curry on top. A large side of fries. I don't know what I was expecting but it basically is what it sounds like. Tasted good, in the way hotdogs and fries do. I personally would have enjoyed more curry flavour but I still enjoyed it the way it was. Service was fast and friendly. The place is small so only a few sit down spots and standing spots.

Perfect snack @3am. This whole thing (2 sausages, 2 beers and fries) cost about 8 €.

Ahhhh Currywurst... One of my fondest memories of Berlin. We were staying at The Circus Hotel and Curry Mitte was right next to it. On our first night in Berlin, we went to a few bars in the area and on our way home, we found ourselves hungry. We stopped by Curry Mitte and got currywurst, fries, and beer. For those of you wondering what currywurst is, it's sausage deep fried for about 2 minutes, then cut into 1cm thick slices, smothered in ketchup and curry powder. I didn't know ketchup and curry powder go so well together!! Their fries were also delicious, they serve it with mayo (trust me, forget your diet, get the mayo when they ask you if you want it on your fries!). Sausage, fries (pommes frites as they call it), and any drink you want (including beer) = 4,50 euro. What a great deal! Open till super late. We loved it so much that we went back next day. I'm pretty sure we would have gone back again if we had more time in Berlin. The guy who runs the shop is very friendly too. 5 stars all the way!

ATMOSPHERE: There was only 1 person attending to all customers. He couldn't really understand English that much. I asked if I could do a "takeaway" and he had no idea what I meant. They don't appear to be designed for takeaways. Just order and eat right away, even though it's practically a fast food establishment. There are few chairs inside to sit and look outside. As well as outside. FOOD: I ordered fries with currywurst and no drink. Cost = €4 (With a drink, it's €4.90) The fries were a little too salty but they are crispy. You can have mayo and/or ketchup added on top if you want. The currywurst basically tasted like a hotdog with ketchup on top and sprinkled curry powder. This is my first time in Germany and also trying "currywurst." It wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

This place inspired my everlasting love for currywurst. Cheap and delicious, as currywurst should be.

So, our group of 10 booked a private guide and drivers and set out. After the initial drive and some touring, we needed lunch and our guide took us to Gendarmerie. First off, it is one of the coolest restaurants inside that I have ever seen. The large piece of art that stretches the width of the restaurant is outstanding and eye catching. There are also replica pieces of the Berlin wall used as art and a series of giant portraits of famous German actors and actresses along with John F. Kennedy. Strange combination. We were seated at a long table. Our server was excellent and very entertaining for this table full of Americans. I can only speak of the two dishes that my wife and I ordered. I had the fried pike-perch fillet, but it was served on fresh local white asparagus which was in season and highly recommended. I can say without question that it was the largest asparagus I have ever seen in my life. Full of flavor with a sauce on the side. Trouble with it was that there was too much and much of it was quite tough. I prefer my asparagus thin not tree trunks. The fish was good but a bit dry so the sauce was welcome. My wife had Konigsberger meatballs with red beetroot and mashed potatoes all in a cream sauce. They are not shy about their sauces here as the photos indicate. But, the meal was very good. At the end, knowing we wanted to divide the check, the server merely had us come to the counter a couple at a time and simply tell him what we had to eat. It all added up so we were good. End review is that it was a great location, but the food was not outstanding at all. If given a greater scale, the review would be a solid 3.5.

The duo running the shop was efficient and respectful of the customers - taking their time to understand english-only speakers like myself. The food itself was affordable in the context of quality and quantity. I ordered a döner kebap with everything topped into it including sauces. Upon biting into their döner kebap, you can sense the freshness of all the vegetables and cooked meat. The food's combined mouthful was sensational given the vegetable's fresh crunch, the bread's fluffy chew, and the meat's succulence. The only critique that I do have is that the döner kebap that I ate did not have as much flavor as I have anticipating. The delicious smell of it did not match the flavor experience unfortunately for me - I hope this was a one off thing. Overall, I would give this place another shot - I hope others have a better experience than me!

We arrived around 5:00 pm but since we had no reservation, the host informed us we would have only one hour to enjoy our meal before we had to leave. I speak only for myself as i was disappointed in my meal. I do not read German so had difficulty determining what I might want to eat. Our friend said no English menus were provided, so I decided on Vienna Breaded Chicken and salad with a lemon vinaigrette dressing (26,50 €). My plate arrived with three pieces of heavily breaded crispy chicken strips, a lemon wedge and a small bowl with butter lettuce coated with tasty dressing. The chicken, however, was dry and required a knife to cut through it. In the U.S., such chicken strips one might find at a fast-food restaurant like KFC and would come with a dipping sauce to heighten the taste. Fortunately my companions had no complaints about their food, so I'm supposing I simply ordered the wrong offering for my taste and the cost for such a simple meal.

The Brandenburg duck arrived looking like it knew exactly how good it was. Perfectly cooked, glistening, and confidently posed beside lush red cabbage, a tender dumpling, and a half caramelized apple that leaned in like it had a secret. One bite of the duck and--oh yes--succulent, rich, and finished with skin so perfectly crisp it crackled ever so slightly before melting away. Pure seduction on a plate. Our waiter was attentive in that smooth, unhurried way--patient and charming as I ordered in English, never rushing, always present at just the right moment. The kind of service that makes you linger longer than planned. The atmosphere? Romantic without trying too hard.
