This will be a 2 part review, one for takeout and one will be dine-in. Take out: my brother ordered a whole bunch of dishes, paneer curry, fried onions, buttered chicken (which they forgot but he did get it the next day), and garlic naan. The portions were small but the food was delicious. Dine-in: they have a buffet and I'm sure you can also order through their menu. There were gloves you have to put on as you take what you like. They had buttered chicken, paneer curry, fried bitter melons, tandoori chicken, chicken curry, naan, biryani, etc to name a few. My brother said they change the items out so you will be able to try out new dishes at the buffet. Some of the dishes were a little spicy (I love spicy food!) so that was a nice surprise. Curry leaf has replaced my previous go-to in GR for Indian food. They have dishes from various regions, creating such depth in their menu that we can't help but order at least three things to share (and for the tasty leftovers)! Their garlic naan is also a must. Everything is reasonably priced for the serving sizes. Because the building used to be a diner, it's not got much in the way of ambiance... but in my opinion, the food more than makes up for it! read more

We have been going to this restaurant for quite some time. We typically get the masala dosa which is awesome. You can't go wrong with any dosa. Recently, we had family visiting so we thought to try something new. I ordered vegetable jalfrezi, tomato dalcha, murgh shahi korma, plain naan, onion kulcha, and carrot halwa. The vegetable jalfrezi and murgh shahi korma were amazing and I would definitely order again with naan. The onion kulcha was good too. I wasn't a big fan of the tomato dalcha but everyone else loved it. The carrot halwa was a bit disappointing, I would not recommend that. Yum! I always visit for the lunch buffet and it rarely disappoints. I have been here on at least 5 occasions and every time they have mostly fresh food out. I usually come before the buffet closes at 2:30. I haven't been here to order off the menu but I can't imagine it being anything short of delicious being their buffet is so amazing! They have a huge variety on the buffet from paneer to chicken to lamb dishes and the flavors are always so distinct, 2 things never taste exactly the same. I would recommend for any person looking to try Indian cuisine for the first time being there are so many options. Even if you know what you're doing id recommend giving them a try! read more

I love love love their buffet and always end up eating so much that I feel like exploding LOL! I ordered the food via Yelp/GrubHub so I can't comment on the restaurant itself. However, the ease of ordering online and picking up at the restaurant was great. By the time I got there the order was ready and waiting, before the estimate that GrubHub gave me. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was top notch. I got Chicken Tikka Masala and garlic naan bread and both were extremely delicious. Portion size was very good and the prices felt very reasonable. Service, as is typical with Indian restaurants, is lacking. They seem annoyed to have customers. And whereas other restaurants, whether a typical American restaurant (say, Denny's) or other Indian buffets in the area (say, Pal's Indian Cuisine) let guests stay past "closing" time, these folks were sure to let us know that they were closing at 2:30. Alright, fine, we didn't come in last minute and had had plenty of time to eat. But then there's the food. As I said, we didn't come in last minute. Closer to 1:00. So with an hour and a half before the place closed, they still didn't bother to refill items (only the white rice). Pal's refilled items even up until the last minute. The food here is also cold (except for the fresh dosa they bring to your table at the beginning). So they don't refill the food, and what they have is left out to sit at room temperature. And the service -- which is unpleasant to begin with -- makes sure to let you know that you're not welcome past the moment of closing time. Pal's is primarily North Indian food, so it's not comparable in that sense. But it's in the same general area and offers a buffet that also ends at 2:30. And the price is actually I think slightly less than this place. But Pal's has better service and restocks the food, which they also keep hot. In other words, in basically every way (besides the options/variety provided, which is up to preference), Pal's is better. The food here was fine, for what it was. Nothing to blow you away. Not an amazing selection. I guess it's the best South Indian buffet I've been to, but then, it's also the only one I've been to. I'd definitely come here again, but I'd probably try to come when they're busy, so that they restock the food and I can get it while it's hot. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. 'Uncourteous' is the word for the person who was the 'host'. Yelp and Google maps said the location is open till 3:30 but they mentioned they close at 3. Now we were there at 2:48 and he was rude enough to just simply say 'NO, you won't be able to FINISH your food by 3'. I have always known that the restaurants take the last order by their closing time and not when the patrons are able to finish, just didn't make sense. This was a surprising find! It's a great Indian restaurant with prompt service and great prices. The varieties of bread and curries is mind blowing. I tried a few vegan options and one of their spicy fried hot pepper rolls. I was really pleased, the spice levels were just right. The portion sizes were also huge. Overall I'd come here again and recommend this place to all of my friends. I think the food is authentic, the service is great and the atmosphere is perfect for a quiet night out. Walking in there were no other customers that should have been a warning sign, but still went in. It seems all their orders are mainly online. Its important to maintain the authenticity, however, subtlety also plays a major role in selling food for the obvious reasons in food business. While there are 1000s of various types of Indian foods in India, only very few options are continental due to the above reasons. It is very difficult to obtain an equilibrium between subtlety and authenticity without losing or overdoing one over the other. I find this place is very close to what I look for in an Indian Restaurant. Although taste is a subjective matter, I can tell you few things why I think this place is original and an absolute belly pleaser. * Food has "Great Smell" and "Great Presentation" Fresh coriander leaves are used to garnish almost every item. Fried onions, curry leaves, almond pieces, colorful tampering on sambar.. etc.. These minor details add lot of value for the presentation and aroma. When the food is being presented to the world and trying to make it easier to wider people, adding few authentic things like these make the experience more enjoyable. * That Chana Dal (Yellow Split Chickpeas) that most Indian chefs don't use in tampering, those peanuts that most are afraid to use in food businesses, that tiny little bit of sugar in the sambar, that fluffy poha (made with rice flakes) that melted in the mouth, those tiny Medu Vadas (Fried Black Lentil Batter) that most may leave the middle part if they were made little bigger, and all those South Indian delicacies most chefs are afraid to get validated on the tough task of that equilibrium I mentioned earlier. * That superior attention to smallest details. * At the end, that dal and ghee sweet that our moms and grandmas make at our homes! Made my day! It was definitely a trip to home. Scope of Improvement: ------------------------- Please place a peanut warning before any dish that contains them for the ones with allergies. Please place a full description for all those labels so everyone can understand and appreciate (or avoid) what they are eating. Overall, it was a remarkable food experience. Food is fantastic, every time. My favorite dish is their Chettinand. Delicious. There are a lot of options that I don't find in other Indian restaurants in town. They have a fantastic lunch buffet as well. Every time I find something new to try. I appreciate that they always rotate dishes. My boyfriend and I go to Curry Leaf semi frequently and we always receive friendly and good service. Whenever I'm there, I see many Indians and Indian families dining in. My first indication that I was in for a treat - on a Sunday afternoon they were packed with a line waiting. All families, all who appeared to be of South Asian heritage. The staff were super friendly as well. All of the dishes we ordered reminded us of the best authentic Indian restaurants we've been to here in the US (Rasika in DC, Seva in NYC). We were happy with everything and felt like we got the jackpot finding this place. The portions are kind of small but the food is so so good. Indian food is one of our absolute favorite cuisines so we were delighted when a friend from India actually recommended this place. We came in on a Saturday night and were able to sit down with our table of 4 immediately. The staff was all extremely friendly and seemed genuinely happy that we were there. The place itself was a slight hodgepodge of 1950's diner mixed with authentic Indian cuisine, in fact some of the art work and things looked like they may had been remnants of the last tenant. The menu is pretty big so you have to make sure you are ordering the right dish- but the servers were extremely helpful. We started with the onion pokoro - fried pieces of red onion that bunch together- served with a mint yogurt sauce- very good! Fun to eat. Lots of good spices and flavor. The mains are what really knocked our socks off though- I had the medium spiced lamb korma- the lamb was tender and melted in my mouth, at the exact same time as my mouth was in a heaven of spices. My wife's tikka masala was equally fantastic and had a great Flavor and was a blast to eat with all the rice and naan bread. For naan we had both the garlic and onion. The onion naan was easily the best we have ever had. The prices were pretty low, in fact much more reasonable than some other Indian places in town. We will absolutely be back!! read more

It never looked like much, kind of a hall in the wall. This place used to serve the best Indian food in Grand Rapids. I don't know what happened, but this is not the same restaurant AT ALL. Beware if you loved this restaurant before, because the dishes are not the same even though they keep the same names as the previous owner/chef. Delicious! We came in for dinner one night. It was so good that we returned for lunch buffet the next day! For dinner, we started with the vegetable cutlets and golden shrimp. Both were killer! The patties were crunchy on the outside and soft and vegetabley/potatoey inside. Served with those killer cilantro and tamarind sauces...so awesome! The golden shrimp was also top notch! Fresh shrimp flavor and crispy battered crust: can't be beat!!! Then came the butter chicken and the aloo gobi adraki. I can handle spice, so I ordered extra spicy and I got it! Thank you. The butter chicken was so smooth and creamy and luscious and delicious. I was so happy! The buttered naan was crisp and soft. Perfectly cooked! I really love the food at Curry Leaf, but sometimes I want a beer to go with it (that's the only negative). I've had the biryani, lamb vindaloo and butter chicken at Curry Leaf. The butter chicken is amazing. Curry Leaf is outside of my typical stomping grounds, but I will absolutely make a detour for their butter chicken. Curry Leaf is where I learned just how good butter chicken could be. The biryani is also fantastic, but my spouse and most frequent dining companion isn't a fan of biryani (I know!) so unfortunately I don't often order it. Perfect naan and delicious, giant samosas, too! Curry Leaf is unassuming and easy to miss, but once you've tried the food, you'll never pass it by again. Went with co-workers first lunch buffet and it met expectations: fast, all you can eat, tasty dishes and vegetarian options for my co-worker friends. Had a little bit of everything and was very happy with the quality. The bread and dips/sauces were excellent. I did not try the dessert (cutting back on sugar) so cannot attest to that.
