Absolutely delicious! Everything had amazing flavor and was perfectly prepared. Great service! Will definitely travel from the Lakeshore often for this place. read more

My wife and I absolutely love this place. Great flavor, great service, great space. It sits in a strip mall next to Horrock's so it's a great date night to get dinner at Desi and then walk around a bit. The only reason it didn't earn 5 stars is we didn't get a good portion of protein in each meal. Seemed like it could have been a little more but that's it! read more

This is by far my wife and I's favorite! Food is excellent, best flavor we've found in west Michigan! Service was great and respectful! Nice quiet small place to enjoy an amazing meal! read more

Ever since I found this place, I've been obsessed! I got my usual butter chicken and my friend got the chicken biryani. I tried some of her food so I can confirm both our foods were delicious! Also, can we admire the presentation? Most Indian restaurants that I've been to will close in the middle of the day for a couple hours, so I love that this place stays open 11am-8:30pm. I also appreciate that you can dine in or take out! I've been here twice and I still don't understand why it's never busy when I go. Of course I love that I can get my food pretty fast, but I wonder if people just don't know about it. It's in a strip mall next to Horrocks so there's a lot to do in the area and plenty of parking. I'm hoping to try something new when I go back and will post again! read more

10/10 highly recommend! My husband and I stopped here for lunch as a way to try somewhere new and it was phenomenal! Service was fast and the server was very kind and gave us recommendations as well as being very attentive. The food was delicious, I got the daal and my husband got butter chicken and both were delicious. The flavor profile was so rich. Both were served with long grain rice was was very light. We also got two orders of plain naan, which was more than enough. We also got the stir fried momo as an appetizer and would highly recommend! We got medium spice for everything and it was enough spice to where there was a kick but not too spicy to need to have a ton of water on hand. If you want the heat I would go up to hot. I also got the mango lassi, which was heavenly and my husband got the Nepali tea, which was very good as well and had a sweet spiced flavor. We will be back again! read more

Always, excellent food. Service is great and it is eell keptbup and clean. I have never been disappointed yet.

Not sure why this place was dead during lunch? Their food is delicious! Maybe because it's in such an unassuming spot in the strip mall. Regardless, I'm really happy that I stopped in. I found some reviews from the EatGR page that recommended the Thali since it's like a sampler platter for one, so I went with the Lamb Thali. I asked for medium spice, and it came out more mild for my taste. The food was steaming hot and you get a lot of meat! 4 large pieces of Naan bread, a bowl of rice, a platter of yogurt that you can mix into the food to tame the spice, some lentil soup, potatoes and chickpeas, and some cucumber slices. All for the price of $17.99, which is totally worth it in my opinion. I was famished and still couldn't manage to eat all of the food. Service was fast, the staff are friendly, and everything was very clean. I'm pretty sure my plate and silverware came out hot, too. I'll be coming by here for lunch more often! read more

Desi Spice - Indian Near Me - Kentwood, Michigan

This is one of my most favorite restaurants in the GR area. Their food is traditional and delicious, both the Nepalese menu and the Indian menu. The family that owns and runs the restaurant are kind and accommodating - I have brought some friends who have had really weird dietary requests and they have always been accommodated gently. Really, this is a wonderful gem and I hope people continue to find and try it. read more

Absolutely wonderful. We were getting a few last minute errands done before the holidays and popped in for lunch. It wasn't busy inside but had a very steady stream of take out. I got the goat thali and my husband the goat curry. Both were fantastic! The thali was a perfect sample platter coming with pickled veggies, naan, dessert and the best lentil soup I've ever had. Spice level 6 was just hot enough to taste all the flavors but still spicy. read more

I've been wanting Indian/Nepali food for a while and luckily I found a nearby restaurant. I ordered takeout and my husband picked it up. We got Goat & Lamb Thali, Garlic Naan, and Steam chicken Momo. This restaurant had mastered the art of creating an explosion of flavors. We really enjoy the rich and velvety texture of vegetable curry & lentil soup. It was my husband's first time trying this cuisine, and he loved it. He also mentioned that the staff is very friendly. Considering the exceptional quality of the food, the warm reception we received, and our newfound appreciation for Indian and Nepali cuisine, we wholeheartedly recommend this hidden gem to anyone seeking an unforgettable culinary adventure. read more

I was inspired by Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown episode to Punjab where the focus on Kulcha really appealed to me. The Onion Kulcha is superb here as is the Thali. The dish comes with chicken curry and rice along with lentil soup, rajma, papad, cucumber salad and yogurt with gulab jamun and naan. The Kulcha is in its own basket. Overall an outstanding meal with plenty to take home. read more

I have been looking for momos in US since I had them in India. This is the only place that I was able to find in GR area that had them. I ordered the steamed chicken and veggie momos and butter chicken with naan. The steamed chicken momos were fantastic! I loved them! The filling had a great flavor and the sauce was spicy. If you can't handle spice it might be a bit too much. Also, for 8.99 there are a decent amount of momos. The veggie momos had a weird filling taste, I probably will not order those again. I was hoping for more from them. The butter chicken and naan were both really good. I would say this was the best butter chicken in GR that I have had. Its definitely on the spicy side and had a great flavor. I would highly recommend this place especially if you like food thats spicy. read more

We tried the following: Chicken Saagwala Onion Kulcha Garlic Naan Desi spice special chicken Chicken 65 Johl Momo Everything was easily a 10/10! These flavors were deeply developed. This place is right next to the Horrocks Market, so a perfect place to grab an Indian meal after your grocery shopping. The decor is humble and nothing fancy. But this is one of those rare joints where you get pretty good north Indian/ Nepali cuisine. Specially if you're curious about Nepali food, you must try the "momo". We went there to grab some lunch after doing the groceries and the chicken thali (multi course meal with chicken curry, lentils, rajma, naan, green salad, papad, yogurt, gulab jamun) didn't disappoint at all. The thing we liked about the food is that it's very different from most of the other Indian restaurants in GR due to the use of northern spices. The service was pretty quick so we didn't have to waste a lot of time waiting for the order either. All in all, a good place to try out! read more

Desi Spice - a plate of food with rice and meat - Indian Near Me - Kentwood, Michigan

Phenomenal. So delicious. Perfect flavors. Be sure to get the paneer tiki masala, you won't regret it.

Indian food, like pizza, is a cuisine that I REALLY have to be in the mood for. The rich sauces, the non-Western proteins, and the confusing medley of spices are a venture into the unknown for this homebody. And somehow I always find myself journeying back to Desi Spice. Perhaps it's the restaurant's proximity to my two favorite grocery stores, Horrocks and Asian Delight. Perhaps it's the proximity to my own home, tucked away in the increasingly diverse corridor bridging Grand Rapids and Kentwood. Whatever the reason, I consistently arrive starved and depart with a satisfied, bulging belly, the aromas of fenugreek and cardamom clinging to my hair. Tonight's itinerary included garlic naan that was freshly toasted with visible chopped garlic pieces pressed into the pillowy dough. The chicken biryani entree could feed three adults, or one ravenous me. (It seems as though the hospitality standard here is: enjoy now, and enjoy again tomorrow; that's Four Seasons service in my book.) The biryani was served with a cucumber-yogurt sauce that I could have drank directly from it's dipping bowl, had I not minded my table manners. The goat curry swam in a complex spicy sauce, the tender meat sliding easily off the bones like butter. My stomach is as stretched as it is post-Embassy Suites breakfast buffet, and yet I can hardly wait for a Desi Spice leftovers lunch tomorrow. How? Perhaps I'm a glutton. No, I'm going instead with...a convert. I'll have Indian food any day, any time - as long as it's Desi Spice. Happy trails, you wanderlusting travelers. read more

Great cuisine in a large quantity. Fried momos, steamed momos, chicken hakka noodles, and chilli chicken were among the dishes we had. All of the goods were fantastic. We split the haka noodles between the two of us and had enough. Although the chilli chicken was really spicy, we enjoyed it. The momos were a little smaller than normal, but they were delicious. The chutney that came with the momos was not really tasty, so we ate the momos without it. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. read more

Small looking from the outside and over the years that we have visited this place, it's switched owners for the 4th time. However, please don't let that deter you. The current owners do an excellent job of fresh preparation and good service. We had Prabin as our server during lunch and he had good recommendations and the food was very good. Easily the best Indian food in the Grand Rapids area. They have a menu that encourages you to step out of your comfort zone of Indian fare while still providing top notch staples. Tucked into a strip mall, you might miss it from the street. Head past the Horrocks beer garden and you'll see it!! My go-to is the Goat Kadai. It has the earthy and well spiced (not spicy unless you want it spicy) flavor of a traditional curry which an added depth and slightly more intensity. Their saag is also outstanding! I can't wait to try the Nepalese fare on of my trips to this hidden gem. read more

This is quite an intriguing experience at Desi Spice. I had a huge craving for lamb, but they did not have that so we settled for goat instead. The place was a bit stuffy at first, but it cleared out after little while. Despite this unusual setting, we still enjoyed our meal as the staff were friendly and the food was wonderful. The only change I'd recommend would be to make the Goat Biryani a bit less salty. Interesting tidbit: goat meat is very healthy and lean. read more

One of the best Indian curries I've had in a while (I had my favorite, Lamb Vindaloo, and my wife split Butter Chicken with our 3 year old), my wife said it reminded her of her grandma's cooking as a kid (which is high praise). Ambiance is nothing to write home about but service was great (staff were friendly and food came out quick), and that's all that really matters in my opinion. Big portions and good prices as well; our new go-to for Indian food. Wish I had gotten some pictures, was too busy eating... read more

First time at Desi Spice so I went with the standard order - Dal Makhani, samosas, garlic naan and chicken tikka masala to go. Heat level was 'warm' but the spice mix was a fantastic surprise. Chicken tikka masala is sometimes served a bit on the sweet side with the cool of green cardamom against the heat. I was expecting something close to that, but instead was pleasantly surprised with much more star anise ... bright and warm in a much different aromatic mix, and far less sugar. Absolutely fantastic, and they didn't skimp on the sauce one bit. All the other touches - naan + samosas were great. HIGHLY recommend and now I want to explore the Nepalese side of the menu. Only recommendation - ask for more heat if that is your jam. (Sorry, no leftovers = no pictures) read more

Excellent food. We got carry out and the packaging kept things hot. We will go back again.

I ordered the food from door dash as I was down with flu.. was hoping to get some comfort food but they sent me food which could kill us!! The Vegetable Chowmein had just red chili and some raw spices without any salt in it. My son was all red after taking the first bite. The Chola Bhatura's Bhatura was soaking in oil and tasted raw and bitter.. I called the restaurant and the manager I spoke with was not even apologetic about it.. said we got a new cook so maybe that's why you got more spice.. I asked her to refund me the entire amount and take back the food if she likes.. I am going to throw in either ways!! What irks me most is when they serve bad food they just don't bother to make amends.. it's supposed to be acceptable and I am supposed to live with it!! read more

This place really deserves more stars, but I cant do that so I'll try to explain the best that I can. I ordered through Uber Eats without ever ordering Indian/Nepalese food here before. I want to note that I've rarely eaten this type of food as well, so ordering it I'm always apprehensive. The explanations of how the dishes are prepared are so helpful! I ordered the Chicken Biryani and the Chili Chicken Momos and Omg they're both absolutely delicious, and aromatic! The portion sizes are well worth 10 star ratings and you can tell this food is cooked with love! I will order from here again and again! read more

Desi Spice - 72. Chicken Biryani Chili Momo Chicken - Indian Near Me - Kentwood, Michigan

My wife and I came in on a Sunday fairly late- about 8:30 P.M. - and it was not very busy. Very clean and quiet, with two other tables seated. They were playing some very loud music but that's ok- it's their language and they want to jam, whatever. I had a mango lassi - delicious- and we started with chicken momo which they served with a delicious trio of sauces- two chutneys and a soy based sauce. The momo were really good, lots of chicken and veggies. I ordered butter chicken with raita, which was really savory and delicious although not quite as creamy as it usually is. It was spicy, but not too spicy. My wife had chicken tikka masala, which was spicier and less buttery but had even more complex flavors. The star of the show, however, was this chicken! The chicken in Indian dishes is often dry and not particularly tasty, but this was so tender and juicy, marinated in yogurt and deliciously flavorful and lightly charred in some spots. I think it was cooked in the tandoori oven. I will dream of this chicken! Lol! All in all we had a nice dinner experience at Desi Spice and we will come again. read more

I think this place is OK. The service is not the best. My wife and I we were in Grand Rapids for just the afternoon and wanted to try some Indian food. I dont know where the 4.5 star reviews come from- this is very misleading and I wonder if they are genuine. We went around 1 pm for the buffet ( supposedly open till 3 pm) and there was nothing left- infact they had even removed the burners. Most dishes had dried up and the rice turned to crisp. Butter chicken was awful. The only highlight was the Naan. The server was also the cook. Well, it was worth a try... read more

I stumbled upon this place, and oh how happy I am to have found it. I finally feel like I can make Grand Rapids my home--having found an Indian restaurant that I love. I walked in to take a look at the menu, and as I saw customers eating with their hands, I immediately felt at ease and that I had made the right decision walking in! The biryani is excellent, it's exactly how my mom makes it-- with whole pieces of spices, like cardamom, and curry leaves. I asked for it to be spicy, and it was made nice and hot. I also had the lamb curry, which was extremely tender. Sometimes lamb can have a funky smell, but this one did not! I've eaten at several other Indian restaurants in Grand Rapids and have yet to find a tender lamb, so this is huge! I also had their matar paneer, asked for it to be mild and it was absolutely delicious. I finally have a go-to place for Indian food in GR! Yay! read more

They treated us like QUEENS! I went to Desi Spice with my sisters, as we were celebrating a birthday. The service was really good; they checked on us frequently and helped us understand the menu. We had a wonderful time. For appetizers, the waiter recommended the Nepali Momos (dumplings): exquisite! We also had the crispy potato cakes. Also very yummy. Their chutneys are made with hand-ground spices and all the entrees we tried were delicious. I ordered from the Nepali menu, a Thali tray that had a full 5 course meal all in one menu item (I didn't realize that when I ordered but we planned to take home more than what we ate at the table that night). Other dishes were traditional Indian restaurant items: chicken byrani and chicken tikka. We enjoyed every bite... a little bit too much, as it seems way to easy to overeat when the food in front of you is so flavorful. We were very impressed with the service. It was a fantastic experience. We will definitely be back for more, after we finish these leftovers. read more
