This was by far the worst Indian food I've had in the entire state of Michigan. It was so bad I'm not sure where to begin unfortunately. We had Aloo Saag and Vegetable Korma, delivered given COVID19. We only received one order of rice even though we had two entree's, and the garlic naan was basically soggy bread. I've never experienced oily/greasy Korma, this was primarily oil with vegetables, the coconut curry was non existent. The Aloo Saag was basically water, spinach, oil and spice. The only good thing was that the potatoes were cooked. Do not waste your money here. I'm upset that we just wasted $50+ on food that we are just tossing because top ramen is a better option. read more

I've been here three times now in a the past two weeks, and each visit has been absolutely perfect! The owner has been there each time, verrrry friendly, kind and helpful. Making conversation came easily for the owner, and when I returned he asked me about some of the things we talked about. The food came out great every time, hot, fresh, and loaded with great flavor. We especially enjoyed the Saag Paneer ($13) and my Mom ordered the tomato soup ($4) every time, it was creamy with just a hint of spice. There's no buffet available at this time of year because business is slow. If that's what you want, make sure you call ahead and see if they are offering buffet. Take out: some of the food is hard to eat in the take out containers. Probably due to the generous amount of rice packed into the to go box. If you are going home and can use a plate, you're all set! But if you try to go eat at a park (like me), you'll likely get rice and masala everywhere. I highly recommend this place for some tasty Indian food and great service. :) read more

The place was empty and seemed abandoned when I came in but walking into the store next door and told them I placed an order over the phone the guy walked me back next door to the empty dining room and rang me up. Quite day, Christmas Eve, totally get it. But this place seemed devoid of any character empty or not. The food was plentiful and well cooked. The sag paneer was not super great, just okay. Not enough seasoning and the spinach didn't have that bright green color and was a bit dark...maybe a bit overcooked... The chicken tikka masala I was told was good. The lamb biryani I had was only okay, I tased little or no saffron, the aromatics were missing though the lamb was well cooked. This is hands down the BEST Indian food I have ever had. We ordered takeout and it was hot and fresh right when we walked in to pick it up. The owner is great, he does all the cooking and runs a shop connected to the restaurant. We ordered chicken tandoori (medium) and channa masala (mild) with an order of samosas. The chicken is tender and grilled to perfection, the samosas are soft and flaky and come with this amazing plum sauce. The flavors in the masala blend so beautifully, even the rice is perfectly done. Chose this place based on the reviews. The other patrons were a couple who told me this is their favorite restaurant and they come here often. The owner was a pleasant gentleman who told me everything is made fresh. I ordered the chicken curry along with an order of naan bread. You choose the level of spice for your order. Dined here about 10 days ago and just getting back to review. It was a Monday and our usual place was closed so thought I remembered visiting this place with a friend so gave it a whirl. Pretty simple: butter chicken and garlic naan. Flavor and texture were off given what I was accustomed to.....the texture of the sauce was "chunky" by comparison to the refined texture of our normal place. Also it had an acidic undertone to me. It wasn't great at all. Disappointed, i didnt eat it and ended up giving it to my deaf Great Dane mixed with his food. He ate it but realized too late that it was fuel for his already fart-y nature and nearly smoked me out of my own living room. This was take out during covid so perhaps India Towns staff or resources were stretched thing, but, I'd recommend trying another option in GR for Indian cuisine. read more

India Town gets the ribbon and cigar in the "Divey No Frills Indian American Cuisine" category. Nothing unworldly or groundbreaking, just a simple place where you can order with confidence. Fresh fired naan, delectable sauces and spices, and a viceroy sized portions. After growing weary of the inflated Bombay in eastown's lack of gratitude and attention, it is nice to fine India Town to be quite courteous, welcoming, and humble. The staff truly do add to the experience. Authenticity Police, stand down. While this is still in the Americanized Indian food realm, it's at least as authentic as you will find in GR (see: butter chicken among competitors). Just got done eating the buffet and it was great. Don't ask me the names of the dishes, but they were all amazing! The flavors are great, just the right amount of spice. Don't get me wrong, it's still spicy, but not the burn your face off, Thai kind of spicy. Owner was very attentive to our needs and friendly and the complementary nan bread reminded me of the time I spent a month in India. This meal was all around nostalgia to me. Definitely the best Indian I have eaten in quite some time. I have beads of sweat dripping off my forehead after tasting this incredible chicken tiki masala. The tomato and onion give it just the right twist , and the flavor bursts all around . The Mango Lassie was just the right thing to quench the fire of the chicken tiki. Portion was more than enough. the food is not good. it doesn't taste good at all. the naan is thin and rubbery. the masala isn't good either. the prices for the food is high. you can find everything at other Indian food places for at least $2-$5 cheaper and the food is better too. not only does the food not taste good, the service is bad as well. I went to pick up my order and the guy at the register (I assume who is the owner) was on a phone call with some one talking in a different language. he didn't even end the call when cashing me out. he also left the register open and unattended for about 3 mins to get more bills for my change. i just feel like that was all very unprofessional. the ambiance of the restaurant is not very pleasant either. it was dark and dirty and EMPTY (not a single other person eating or getting take out) too. You enter through the grocery store side and the first thing you smell is all the good spices they sell and you know you are in a for a treat on the restaurant side. Tony one of the owners is very funny and friendly. He really adds to the experience. I uslually get one of the lamb dishes. I've tried a different one every time and they are all good. On Christmas Eve, we got a little stir-crazy. A few full days of life on 17 acres in the middle of nowhere can bring out the RED-RUM in even the most sane of humans. And so, we ventured out in search of some good eats. The people who needed to be pleased: my fiance, who had previously spent 9 months living in India for work. My parents, who grew up in--and continue to live in a--very rural area where a dinner out general means steak or pizza. Me, a country-gal-turned-city-girl who has spent a decade developing a picky palate. And bam! India House delivered across the board. We all had an awesome time. My fiance said that it was better than anywhere he's been in Chicago, including the Devon scene. My steak-loving Dad loved the food so much that he's started compiling a list of other Indian-food restaurants he'd like to try. My lovely mum was happy. I was so happy that I briefly thought about how to try to con my fiance into living in G-Rapids. Briefly. So yeah. VICTORY across the board. We had a very positive experience tonight at India Town. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and a vegetarian dish with yellow lentils. We also ordered the whole wheat Roti bread. We are from Chicago and eat Indian food often, and found both dishes and the Roti quite delicious and comparable with good Indian dishes in Chicago. All food is hand-made and fresh, including the cheese and sauces. The owner, Tony, was extremely friendly and open with us. He was very helpful in answering any questions we have and even offered medical/ayervedic advice on certain topics he knew of, which came up in discussion. My friend from Indian and I were the only people at India Town for the lunch buffet at noon on a weekday. The food was not good. Just don't go there. Don't do it. Nothing was flavorful, the chutneys were bad, and the veggies looked and tasted like the frozen pea, carrot and corn mix. The tandoori chicken wasn't worth eating. I've eaten in the restaurant side once before, but it's been a few years. Today when an Indian-food craving hit, this is the first place I thought of. After recommendations from a friend, I ordered chicken tikka masala, a veggie samosa, and garlic naan. My car smelled amazing on the way home; I couldn't wait to dig in! I could have eaten all of it (though it would easily serve 2 generously) it was so good. Seriously fantastic. I like spice, but ordered it "medium" just to be safe. It had a nice flavor but was not hot--just perfect. The samosas looked more like pakoras when I got them home, but were fabulous anyway. I'd order everything again in a heartbeat. The restaurant is remodeling and should be open within a week (as of 10-29-10) so I picked up my order on the grocery side. read more

I really like this one. I love little authentic restaurants that some may call a dive. I ordered the lamb do-piaza and it was delicious. The onion naan was great too. Our server was this giant Indian boy who I thought was adorable, and he was very polite and likable. The only small complaints I had was the time it took to cash out. They had customers on the grocery side so it took a while for them to get back to us. We understood, though. But also the portions. They were small compared to what I'm used to at Indian restaurants, but the prices are the same. Me and my wife went here after reading some mixed reviews about this place. When we went there for lunch, it was empty and the buffet looked very unappetizing. We ordered from the menu and after over 30 mins of waiting, we got the beverages (lassi was sub standard). Then the food came - it was salty with no taste of the actual ingredients of the entree; we ordered paneer masala and malai kofta, both were unidentifiable after tasting. We felt we could've tried ANY Indian restaurant in grand rapids and it would have been better than this one. To add to the disappointment, the prices are not reasonable. The entrees were each $11 which is wayyyyyyyyy more than you would pay for how it tastes. The koftas had no flavor and our only savior was the raita and plain rice! We finished our meal swiftly and left with a regret that we didn't go to Palace of India or Bombay Palace. If you want good Indian food, this is NOT the place to go!! read more

Do not make the mistake of eating elsewhere. The food is fresh, spiced well, complex and delicious! How anybody gives less than 5*'s is beyond me. My only regret is that I may never have the opportunity to return. So forget any other review that has anything bad to say about this place. I travel all around the country and I have tried at least 50 Indian restaurants from coast to coast in the last couple years. This is literally in the top 3 of all time. I'm talking about SF, NY, Boston...big cities...fancy restaurants...dives...holes in the wall you name it...if it's Indian and has semi-decent reviews and I'm in the area I'll try it. I ALMOST didn't come because of the 3.5* but when I read what those losers were complaining about...buffet...I knew what was going on. Buffets always suck. Spices are expensive and Indian buffet is never ever ever as good as the dinner entree that's spiced to order. So please people...don't give a review based on an Indian food restaurant buffet. I've only ever been to one that was as good as the dinner. Even my top #1 favorite Indian restaurant of all time...their buffet isn't nearly as good as the dinner. I've been craving Indian food. So I planned my day around going to Division to sample the mutter paneer and naan (my favorite dish as a vegetarian). I ordered the takeout and sped home, giddy to try this new place. All was not well. The mutter paneer was watered down. The paneer (cheese cubes) were bland and chewy. The rice was dry. The naan, while generous with the portion, was soggy. And I was disappointed as I chewed. I was so saddened. Even more so because this place seemed legit. Indian people served me. The restaurant had the feel of an ethnic grocery store, with the fluorescent lighting, padded chairs, and cash register. Bottom line: No bueno. I'm sorry India House, I really wanted to love you. This was the best Indian food I've had in the GR area. The restaurant itself is tricky to find, and completely unpretentious, but the food was authentic and delicious. I had the Vegetable Jalfarazi, which was flavorful and freshly made. Every thing tasted freshly made... I think there was one woman cooking it all herself, so the food took a little longer to get, but that was not a problem. My mom said the garlic naan was some of the best naan she ever had. The atmosphere is sparse but friendly and homey, and there is a shop attached that we browsed around while waiting for our food. Lots of clothing, Bollywood dvds, and a grocery section. Really interesting things you would not find anywhere else. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to any lover of Indian cuisine. read more
