Jason Sphinx is my friends tattoo artist. We would describe his ink style as traditional/old school Americana with a Japanese influence. His lines and illustrations are very detailed and his freehand color work and shading are exquisite. Very clean and relaxed environment with a Quentin Tarantino-esque vibe. I made this account just to leave a review - Nick is the best tattoo artist I have ever met! I came in with some friends from the east coast and it had been 3 years since we met. We each wanted 2+ tattoos each and came as walk-ins. Nick took the time to talk to each of us and tell us how our tattoos would look based on size. We felt really comfortable with him - it was my best friends first time getting a tattoo and she was very very happy with her experience. I've been wanting a tattoo for a very very long time, and I finally decided to go with this place, particularly with Jason. I followed several tattoo artists, followed the #bayareatattooartist hashtag on instagram, looked on Yelp and Facebook reviews and finally went with this place because Jason had an awesome style and the reviews for this place were solid. I pinged Jason on instagram to ask him some prelim questions like how the process works, down payments, stuff like that and he was super helpful and patient with me about it! I sent him a picture of what I was interested in and went in for a consult, and he talked to me about where I'd want it done, how big I'd want it, when I'd be available, how long each session would take, etc. The first consult took about a half hour and I paid a deposit, which went towards my final total. Second consult, he showed me the sketch and size so I could see where it would go. The first session for the outline was fairly smooth, took only an hour or so after filling out a bunch of paperwork, and he gave me some basic instructions and antibacterial soap for taking care of it. Second session, he warned me would be a bit more painful since we'd be going over the skin multiple times, but also only took a little less than 2 hours. I have to say that the final product looks AMAZING. It hasn't quite healed yet, but Jason has been super responsive any time I had any questions about taking care of it or anything. And honestly, he's such a chill dude that I felt really comfortable with him. Also, everyone who works at this location are super friendly and nice, so I felt at ease every time I was here. Would definitely recommend coming here for a tattoo and I'm already dreaming up my next one! read more

Customer service is non existent. Casey specifically is useless - I go in for my first tattoo. He asks me to leave my cell no for the artist- Cory to call me back. Also to send Cory a message on Instagram..3 days later and no phone call or Instagram message later- I call the shop. I speak with Casey - he tells me if I'm in a rush maybe speak with 3 other artists - whose names he mentioned (and I forget right now). I repeatedly asked him to give my number to them- so I could talk to each of them, decide who is the best fit and move from there. He refuses to do that - which is what he suggested 3 days ago (he said you should talk to diff artists and see who is the best fit). Completely confused I hang up because he refuses to have the artists call me. Because he doesn't want all the artists to talk to me and wonder who I will pick. This is the Bay Area - there's fierce competition for businesses. With customer service like this, please pick another tattoo place. read more

Before I made an appointment with Current Tattooing, I went in first to inquire about my tattoo and was greeted by a friendly tattoo artist named Mikey. He gave me a bit more information about the process and gave me a card. A couple of days later, I decided I really wanted to get this tattoo. I called the tattoo shop and made an appointment within 30 minutes! I thought wow this is great! Luckily, this place was only about a 5 minute drive from my place. Parking can be found either in a near parking lot or in the street. I had my appointment at around 5-6ish and it was kind of hard doing a parallel parking in the street just because of all the cars coming and not yielding to you even though the light is red and they just want to block you off... Anyway, I went in and found out that the person I talked to was Mikey! I was glad it was him because we had prior rapport. I showed him my ID and was given forms by another employee. Took me about 5 minutes to fill it all out and gave the forms back. I waited for about 10 minutes in the waiting room for Mikey. I showed him what I wanted and printed the tattoo that I wanted. After re-sizing it, he told me the estimate ($80) which I thought was reasonable so I gave the go ahead. He escorted me to the back behind the counter and put on a temporary tattoo to see how it looked like. I appreciated how he asked not one, but two of his co-workers to see how it looked! When we finalized the tattoo, I laid down and he sanitized me as he prepared. We made small chats and I was surprised to find out that he's only been doing this for two years! I wasn't scared but I was astonished that he was knowledgeable with his line of work that I thought he's been doing this for at least 5-10 years. The whole process of tattooing me was about an hour including sketching and being inked. He gave me instructions on how to take care of it and gave me his card which I thought was the coolest business card I've ever seen. If I do decide to get another tattoo, I'd love to come back here! read more

My friend suggested me to Ike because she had done a majority of her gorgeous and flawless tattoos before. I set up my appointment last winter for a mandala piece, all blackwork and I couldn't be happier with the result. I drew a sketch for Ike to work with and he went above and beyond, he added his personal touches and considered my opinion if changing things would look better than my original idea, which as an artist you want your work to be completely cohesive. Ike has also done my sleeve and I know for a fact that I'll be coming back multiple times in the future for other pieces. Also, the rest of the staff is friendly and they all specialize in their specific style from portraits, Americana, tribal and Polynesian, and many of these artists are extremely skilled and versatile that they could work with incorporating other styles and embracing it flawlessly. These guys are friendly as hell and the place itself is creative and very cool. I refer all my friends to go here to get work done and they've all been extremely satisfied.
