We came here on my birthday and had a coupon from Chocolate March. My wife made reservations for Friday night. So, it was nice not to have to cook and eat out. It started out a bit odd since they didn't find my wife's reservation. Anyways, we picked out our entrée from the menu which was the Goldie's walleye and the braised peppercorn short rib. The ribs were okay but a bit on the boring side with texture a bit soggy. The walleye was not crunchy and the breading was also unappetizing. Anyways, we didn't pay full price so can't complain too much on it. Even the Macy's Lakeshore Grill is much better than this place. So, we were a little disappointed on this place. read more

This is one of those places where the food is extremely creative but not over the top. In fact, they are traditional recipes so people with narrow tastes will love this place while foodies will appreciate the added touches. My wife had the slow roasted salmon, which may mean baked in other places, but the fish was succulent and well seasoned. It was atop a hybrid kind of thing - very large couscous or very small risotto. It was finished with some shaved cucumber in a delicate yogurt dressing. My entree, the beef spare rib (boneless) was lean and slow cooked to perfection. Desert: the apple dumpling with ice cream. Again, creative and delicious. For City dwellers, this is worth the trip. My first visit there last night left me with the feeling of ambivalence. The indoor environment is ok. The outdoor patio is on the parking lot. The food was decent. I had the walleye sandwich was was good but nothing great. The fries were great and the Creme Brûlée' was great. (Obviously taking a day off of the healthy nutrition plan). I think we had a new server who was nice but not very efficient - forgetting drinks, bringing kids desserts but no spoons, little things really and always tried to make up for it. read more

Current has everything I love when dining out. A warm cozy atmosphere, friendly staff and great food. I love going out for Sunday breakfast! I've come to expect poor service at this restaurant after going now and then for the last few years. Tonight was the breaking point - ordered take out and arrived a couple minutes before the order was to be ready. The bartender was pleasant and said they were just boxing it up! 30 minutes later I was still waiting to receive burgers and fries. A lady brings it out, no apologies, more of a rude " I have some burgers" ....wow. Honesty and integrity go a long way. It's obvious my food was not just being boxed up 30 min earlier - more like hadn't been started! They weren't busy, I counted 10 people there. I'm a very understanding person, however being lied to is being disrespected. Hopefully someday this place understands customer service and integrity before it's too late- it's totally lacking. read more

The service was absolutely terrible. The food wasn't any better. Two of us had the risotto and had zero flavor and very little chicken in the risotto. My husband had the prime rib angus burger and was awful, a patty with a couple slices of roast beef. Wish i could rate the food, but entire staff was to busy standing around chatting....had to find someone to seat us....then I had to get my own menu...not that we ordered anything! Have been to Current around half dozen times and enjoyed most every time. Food is great, beer and cocktail selection above average, unique appetizers and great servers. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing drive and a stop in historic Afton. My only complaints: Drunk boaters coming in for more binge drinking (Dock access) and an overly rude manager who was not willing to make a customer happy. read more

First time staying at the inn and loved the idea of just being able to eat outside right on the property. We sat at the little fire table and enjoyed a glass of wine while we waited for our food. The sea bass was incredible and we had great service. We will be back. read more

Shockingly bad experience - after a very long wait (with a reservation) we were seated in overflow(?) dining off the reception desk with very bright lighting, and no ambiance. Restaurant was clearly overbooked. A frazzled waiter greeted us by telling us he as been told to "discourage" diners from ordering the Steak Diane, and that they just served the last Bananas Foster (which produced groans from at least half a dozen diners in the room). We went primarily for a special 3-course set menu listed on Open Table, which was not even offered when we got there. We were a bit stunned by the experience and excused ourselves without even ordering, telling our waiter it was not what we expected. read more

The menu is just the right size, a few salads, a few sandwiches, a few entrees, etc. The individual items on the menu are unique, and of high quality. A notch above a dinner club, but a notch below a top rated gastropub. We've eaten here about a dozen times, and occasionally bring the youngsters. One noteworthy item - the kids menu is something any mom will appreciate. for about $4 the kiddos get a side dish (yogurt, fruit, or edamame (really!) and a quality main course (turkey burger, house made penne mac and cheese, etc). As or the main menu: ligonberry Turkey burger is good. Truffle fries are great. Chop salad is always good. Pastas are great. Pork Taco appetizer is good. Lot's to choose from, and you won't go wrong. If you want a decent restaurant in Afton, this is the one I recommend. read more

We had our first visit to Current tonight. The food was really good and for a nice price. We ordered the Thursday dinner special- a large steak, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a mushroom gravy; salmon salad, crab cakes, and the kid's chicken tenders meal. Everyone really enjoyed the food; the mushroom gravy was a great consistency and flavor, really complimented the steak and mashed potatoes. The salmon salad has a very generous portion of salmon, served with a perfectly spiced Thai peanut sauce. Even the kid's chicken tender was better than the typical chicken strip you'd expect to find on a children's menu. Our waitress, Andy, went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our dining experience. Her quick, friendly service made us feel like we were her only table/priority (though we were not). Overall, this was a very pleasant dining experience, even with young kids. This restaurant has a cozy patio, but also a lovely dining room inside (perfect for date night). Wanted to try an easy dinner spot with the river ambiance. The chicken salad was a handful of greens, a few blueberries, filbert nuts, no dressing and "candied nuts"--- which were cashews? More filberts? In a hard, corn syrup- like ball. So hard I could not even eat it and it chipped my tooth. $16.50? Wow. I feel seriously idiotic for paying that for a salad so terrible. The kids meals were ok. No salt or anything on edamame. No flavor. Took them home without eating to spice myself. Tried once. Won't ever go back. Somehow, it became my job this year to find a place to have Easter buffet brunch for my big (14+ people) family. Usually we have it at someone's house with an egg hunt etc. But this year with almost total snowcover (with the remaining being mud) No one wanted to host with a jillion kids and no easter egg hunt and mud etc. Suffice it to say that next time we'll have it ourselves no matter what kind of spring it is. Anyway, we ended up at the Afton House. We hadn't ever been but I always like Afton and thought it must be good for what they charge. I should say that this is the first review for anything ever I've ever posted online. So, I'm really hoping that the Afton house reads this. They need to know how mediocre their food is. I would have given 2.5 stars if I could, but only because of the mostly good+ service. We never had to wait to order a drink or anything. I can't go on and on about every subpar thing on the buffet but here are some high(low) lights: One of the things that made the place sound up our alley was the fact that they were serving Eggs Benedict-this family is crazy for Eggs Bennedict and we try to top eachother every year. It's hit or miss but at least it's actually Eggs Benedict. At Afton House there was a little card under the warming tray that said "eggs benedict". Here's what it was; a dried up piece of that tiny rye bread(that stuff's always dried up) with a little pile of even more dried up scrambled eggs on top. The egg topping appeared to be scooped from the warmer above the little cards that said something like "scrambled eggs with english cheddar" No Canadian Bacon or any bacon. No Hollandaise Sauce or any sauce. The other thing we were tentatively looking forward to was the pancakes with apple filling. I know that doesn't sound that good in the first place but here's what it was at Afton House: A weird white pancake that seemed not fully cooked..and yet it held together in a way that a not cooked pancake shouldn't. Maybe they were frozen originally, not sure. The filling tasted like canned apple pie filling. It was served with maple syrup. The "dessert buffet with an array of desserts" etc was a weird table in the lobby that had pre-cut cake and pie. Maybe 9 or 10 pieces at a time. What kid doesn't want chocolate cake? Even they wouldn't eat it even though they were hungry after the yucky buffet. The reason this is my first review is that I feel so responsible for having my whole family come to this place for overpriced crappy food. I won't even start about the fact that they seated us in the "Current Bar" not at all the interesting, historic place in their photos. It was just a bar that could be at any Ruby Tuesday's or Appleby's anywhere. Thanks. read more

Good menu, good food. One of the best versions of a Cubano sandwich I've had. Unfortunately, the Service lacked greatly, and it was beyond the normal delays of a busy Saturday night. We waited 30 minutes after the order was placed to hear from the waitress that our food would be up in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later, we finally received the dinner salads, the entrees weren't served until 25 minutes after that. Noticed that several tables that ordered full meals after us were served 15 min before us. One sandwich and burger were served hot, one item barely warm. When a restaurant messes up an order, they should just own up to it. Finally complained to a mgr. He did offer each of us a chocolate truffle for dessert. We avoid sugars, so didn't accept, but at least it was an acknowledgement. Very mixed experience. read more

The food is AMAZING, We order from the current a lot, there food is so creative and they try to buy as much local food as possible! My favorite meal from there is the turkey burger, the apple slices make this burger. I have tried turkey burgers other places but his one is by far the best one I have ever had. It comes with french fries which are really good! The only thing is that they are really slow sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes for the Turkey burger when they say it will be done in 20 minutes. It is also difficult to get a hold of them by phone to place an order I have had to call several of times for anyone to answer and then sometimes the receptionist at the Afton House Inn will just take my order and give it to the cook at the current! I will keep going there because the food is so good and they always have something new to try read more

WHAT A JOKE! Seriously. I was mad all weekend after eating here on a recent Friday night. Mostly because the fish tacos I ordered seriously had the smallest piece of fish ever in the world(like the length of my pinky finger and just as skinny) there was hardly any slaw on them either and the dish was like $14! Whichever chef had the balls to send those out was pretty gutty. Tiniest serving of french fries too. I was with some girlfriends so I didn't feel like complaining. My friend ordered a mojito and the waiter came back to tell her that they ran out of limes and asked if she wanted it without the limes!! Ummm..... no thanks. Also 2 friends ordered salmon. One as an entree, and the other as a salad. The price difference between the two was quite a bit and when the dishes came, the serving of salmon was the same for the two. Needless to say my friend regretted paying for the more expensive dish when she could have had the same size in a salad! The waiter was awkward and kind of creepy. Still disgusted that my bill for the shittiest fish tacos of my life with a tip was $19 and I drank water. Will never be back. Ever. they basically robbed me. :( read more

We have given Current multiple chances but every time we are disappointed. The service is always slow. They need to train their staff who pretty much all have a ho-hum attitude. We've often waited a long time for anyone to come to our table, even when they aren't busy. Then we wait at least 30 minutes to get our food. They seldom come to ask if things are okay or even to refill water or other drinks. I think they have too much going on in the kitchen trying to handle 3 different restaurants. Years ago, they had a wonderful Sunday brunch. What happened to it? Even though we live in Afton, we won't patronize them again. So sad that it has gone so far downhill. read more

Not sure how to rate this. I stopped by on Sunday for a late lunch with my husband. The seating was immediate, the wait time for food was reasonable and the food tasted good. My two star rating is based on the STAFF and the cleanliness. The chef/cook made what I thought to be delicious food - not knocking the cook. But the hostess and wait staff had loud conversations for the duration of our meal, as if the place were empty of guests and it detracted from the dining experience. What detracted even more from the dining experience were the FLIES. Flies from outside were buzzing inside - at least 2 dozen - trying to land on our food as we ate. This is my second time at this place and we had a bunch of flies the last time - but it was spring and the doors were open so I could forgive the flies: not this time, no excuse for it. And then the employee conversations about the flies: I overheard one gal [hostess?] say from behind the bar "Oh my God, look up at the ceiling at all the fruit flies!" Flies from outside are one thing, but fruit flies covering the ceiling of the bar means **staff are not cleaning properly.** I won't say I will never go back, I would try them in the middle of winter when the flies outside have all died off, because I think the chef is a wonderful cook. But loud staff who announce that they have allowed the bar to become a breeding ground for fruit flies make me think twice about how clean the rest of the place is, and and make me think twice about ever coming back. read more
