I say surprisingly because let's face it it's in Woodbury MN the land of chain restaurants and 17 year old cooks. This food had pride you could taste. We'll be back wow. Update: So good we went back the next night order the same thing and again fabulous!

The fact that they have housemade pasta in all kinds of varieties says a lot, they really care about attention to detail, and it is evident in the menu offerings. We ended up getting a handful of items to include the focaccia with seasonal butter, garlic bread with marinara dipping sauce, hamachi crudo, and the rigatoni. The rigatoni had berbere spices in it which made it super flavorful and unlike any other pasta I've had in the twin cities. The berbere spice is traditional to Ethiopian slow-cooked stews so to find it in a pasta at an Italian restaurant was very intriguing! The flavors were perfect! I am excited to try more things from the menu and try other pastas, the flavors did not miss and I was impressed to say the least. The ambience is also lovely, you'll forget that you're in a shopping center in the burbs. I will say however that the pricing was high for the area, $28 for a lamb bolognese is a little egregious.

Now the good: the food was absolutely incredible. Easily a 10/10. Our group of five had a variety of dishes; the Marma burger, Rosa fettuccine, pesto penne, walleye, and Bang Bang shrimp - and every single one was excellent. The whipped feta and Brussels sprouts were standouts and a must-order. The atmosphere is beautiful and inviting, and our service was fantastic; attentive, friendly, and seamless. That said, the 90-minute table limit made the experience feel rushed. With five people ordering drinks, appetizers, and entrées, it's just not realistic to have a relaxed dinner in that timeframe. We didn't even have time for dessert before being asked to wrap up. What made it more frustrating was that tables of four across from us were seated before we arrived and were still comfortably enjoying their meals while we were being rushed out. Bottom line: amazing food and great service, but if you're looking for a leisurely, relaxing dinner - especially with a group - this may not be the best fit. Go for the food, just be prepared for the pace.

However, the 1.5 hour limit for dinner feels rushed, so wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a place to socialize for any longer than that. Food: We enjoyed our dishes overall. The hoisin sauce was pretty strong, even by our standards, and overpowered the tuna. But overall, it was good.

Also the chipotle chicken bowl is phenomenal. Their fries are homemade and are amazing. And I always order their chicken wild rice soup. It is the best. My husband always orders one of their burgers and he said they are always good. Mostly great service but lately have had a number of bad servers in a row. Not sure what is going on there but we had one server (Princess) which was pretty close to the worse service we've ever had. Was extremely rude, didn't refill sodas, and we practically had to beg her for the check. Buy other than bad service a few times and one bad menu item I'd say this place is hands down our favorite restaurant in Woodbury.

Bartenders were very nice and quick, ensuring that everyone had something to drink. I thought it was nice how the bartenders were interacting with us about sports and other fun interests, which meant that they were attentive! It was also very nice how one of the bartenders noticed I was finished with my drink and replaced it with an iced water. Once we had our party members, we were seated and were given menus. One thing I noticed was that our server ignored me and asked the rest of the table (who happened to be men) what they would like to drink. It seemed that anytime I was trying to say I would like a water, I was immediately dismissed. This happened more than once, which made the experience feel a little awkward. Since we were waiting on one more party members (who unfortunately couldn't make it at the end) maybe our server was waiting for him to be seated before taking our order? But it took her a full 20-30minutes for her to take our food orders, while I was still without a drink. I had to ask for water while making my food order. Bartending service was very nice. But table service was a bit of a disappointment. Food-wise it was alright, but nothing out of the ordinary that would make me want to come back. The inside was pretty nice though, with casual dining spaces. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'd come back anytime soon though.

I appreciate that is is a fairly minimalistic space: small lobby to check in and head right to your seats, retro movie decor gets you excited for the movie experience, and comfy chairs in the theater itself. With each seat pairing sharing a table, you use a QR code to order snacks, drinks, or even a meal! The incredibly friendly and top notch staff deliver your order directly to your seat. This was the best part for sure! We lucked out and had a fairly empty theater so it was easy to navigate and the phone refill ordering didn't distract me during the movie! The movie itself had great graphics and sound! I appreciated that there wasn't a ton of previews compared to other chains. Now, this isn't a criticism of the theater itself, but of the concept. I have two major issues with the concept that would make me less likely to go back. The first is that if you order a sandwich or other meal, the darkness makes it incredibly difficult to eat cleanly. I definitely finished the movie with some sauce on my shirt ;) Secondly, the tables are shared by pairs of seats, so if you are alone or have an odd number in your group, someone might have to share a table with a stranger, which feels a bit odd and uncomfy to me. I wish there was a way for each seat to have an individual table. Overall, a really solid experience and unique concept! I'd check it out for yourself and see how you feel!

My friends and I stopped by to watch The Odyssey (fantastic movie) during a 2:00 PM Sunday showing…read more A few visits ago, I would have given the Alamo Drafthouse an easy 5 out of 5 stars. Overall, it is still a great movie theater, and if you do not want to read the rest of my review, I absolutely recommend trying it at least once. Let's start with the mostly positive aspects. We ordered the new Jumbo Mozzarella Sticks. I really liked them. My wife thought they were average, but I think they are a big improvement over the old mozzarella sticks, and I would order them again. My biggest issue is that, for $13 plus tax, you only get five, and "jumbo" is not the right word. They are only slightly larger than an average mozzarella stick. At that price, at least include eight. I also love the atmosphere and ambience. Whether you are walking through the hallways or entering the theater, it just feels comfortable. I am not sure what they have done, but it just feels good! The projectors continue to impress me. They seem brighter, sharper, and more detailed than those at any other movie theater I have visited. Absolutely fantastic. The staff is also consistently excellent. Everyone has always been incredibly kind, and I have never really had an issue with customer service. I have also enjoyed their Loaded Fries with Queso and several milkshakes, although I miss some of the flavors they removed from the menu. Now for the negatives and why this is no longer a 5-star experience. First, the seats do not recline far enough. I am 6 feet tall, and I always wish they reclined a little farther. I feel like I am sitting closer to a 90-degree angle than I would prefer. Next, I understand that we went to "The Big Show" for a major movie release, but our entire group complained about the volume. It was far too loud, to the point that it hurt my ears during several scenes and I had to cover them. Even lowering it by 10% may have made the loud scenes more comfortable while leaving the quieter scenes perfectly audible. During this visit, I ordered one of their newer pizzas, the BBQ Chicken Pizza. I immediately regretted it. Friends and family have warned me that pizza is one of the weaker menu items. Unfortunately, they were right. The pizza was not good, and I would never order it again. My biggest complaint was how sweet it was. I do not know if they use too much BBQ sauce or an extremely sweet sauce, but it overpowered everything else. On top of that, the pizza was incredibly salty. It almost reminded me of eating popcorn. We did not get popcorn during this visit, so I know it was not coming from that. The cost? $20.40 with "extra ranch drizzle" added on. Yikes. I also have mixed feelings about the new mobile ordering system. I can see the pros and cons, and this was our first time using it, so maybe it will become easier with repeated use. That said, if I could wave a magic wand and go back to the old pen-and-paper system, I probably would. Everyone else in my group felt the same way. The biggest advantage is not having to wait for the check at the end of the movie. That part was genuinely nice. However, it feels strange to pull out my phone during a movie just to order food or request a refill. The Alamo built its reputation on minimizing distractions and discouraging phone use, yet customers now have to use their phones to order. That feels backwards. Also, connect to their unsecured Wi-Fi or you may have trouble using the ordering system. As someone who works in IT, entering my credit card information over an unsecured Wi-Fi network made me uncomfortable. The payment process needs work too. Manually entering my entire credit card number while sitting in the theater was frustrating. Apple Pay, Google Pay, or the ability to securely save a payment method to an Alamo account would make the experience much smoother. I considered giving this theater 3 stars, but that felt too harsh because I still genuinely enjoy coming here. I have had much better food in the past, and I still think this is one of the better movie theater experiences around. I will be back, but this is not going to be our go-to theater. They charge premium prices for the food, but you are not always getting a premium product. Fortunately, the ticket prices seem to be on par with other theaters. It feels like things have slipped over the past few years. The food is much more hit-or-miss than it used to be, and I am not convinced the mobile ordering system is an improvement. My advice: skip the pizza. The food here is either fantastic or disappointing. There does not seem to be much middle ground. Overall, I still recommend the Alamo Drafthouse, and I will absolutely be back. I just hope these recent changes improve because this used to be an easy 5-star theater for me.
