It is tough to run a business, especially a restaurant, I am a business owner. and a local to the area. Unfortunately management is not paying attention. The good: Food was above average, tasty, hot and worth the money. The bad: We were greeted with water. The cups had lipstick, but that happens. Our server disappeared for a good 10 minutes and they were not busy. Once we did put in our order, the drink was ordered incorrectly. We notified the bartender and she was upset because she said it was the servers fault. The ugly: Our server seemed off, not sure unfortunately was having trouble. She never came back and we had to ask other servers to help us, napkins, silverware, refills, etc. basic server stuff. However she did, come back at the end to bring the bill and was pleasant to take our credit card. When we asked for a to go cup for our tea, the bartender came out before we left, brought us one, and said, "just to let you know, we don't usually do this". Odd, we paid for it, it is not alcohol. We took it as you are lucky, and don't come back. The other waitstaff, other than ours were on top of it, unfortunately ours disappeared, maybe she had a bad day, although she thought she was being pleasant and again, seemed a bit off. I am shocked that a business in such a small town, that has competition down the street, would do its best to cater to their clientele to assure repeat business in today's economy. read more

Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews before going here. We stopped after the local craft event. We were seated outside. Our waitress was quite good. That's about all that was good. I ordered a flatbread which was overcooked and so loaded with extra sauce it was almost too salty to eat. We also ordered a chicken sandwich, also overcooked and this one was bland despite it sounding delicious on the menu. We did order drinks which were timely served. Yelp comes up with a coupon. They won't accept it. They said "we have tried to stop all of those since COVID and Yelp won't take it down." This really isn't my problem. It would have cost them less than $2 to honor the coupon and deal with the issue on their own, but that's not the kind of business they are. While we were there it was quite windy and we were literally holding the table down from blowing over. We told our waitress this before we got up. I would have lowered the umbrella myself, but it's wasn't clear how to do so. Our waitress told us, no, it was fine. So we got up and left. We hadn't walked 10 feet before the entire table blew over with everything still one it. Can't say we didn't warn them. We definitely will not be back and I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

We got take out from The Current while staying in a cabin nearby for the weekend. Everything we got was hot and delicious! The grilled chicken sandwich was perfectly executed with fresh apples and melty Brie. The truffle fries were the perfect addition. The jerk pulled pork was a 10/10, good spice and crunchy slaw, perfection. The service was wonderful too. Love that they offer curbside. read more

We tried the Current for Thanksgiving dinner this year. First, I selected the location based on the published menu and the photos of the venue. The place looked nice and bright and upscale. We arrived early for our reservation and were directed to the bar and then, shortly after, were seated in the bar area, not in either of the two dining room. Apparently we didn't make the cut - they must have known we were from out of town. So instead of a nice holiday dinner in a nice restaurant, we enjoyed our meal at a high-top in a dark bar where we filled our plates at a line of serving dishes in what must normally be the pool and darts area. The food was good, not great and not consistently hot. Meat selections were fried sunfish, ham and turkey. The sunfish was good although largely unseasoned, the ham was ok and the turkey was very good although the tray was empty except for crumbs on my first trip through the line. Stuffing was very good (they had 2 options), the sweet potatoes were excellent and the mashed potatoes we well done as well. Was not impressed with the green bean. I'll have to admit, though, I certainly expected more for the price. The desserts were small and largely forgettable. My biggest complaint was service - while other tables seemed to be getting constant attention, we rarely saw our server. In fact, he stopped at our table 4 times - once to take our drink orders, two times during the meal but only after I asked a waitress to find our server, and once when he dropped off the bill. Like I said, I expected a more pleasant experience with better food and much better service for the price. read more

They serve a brunch menu on Sundays. Food was copious and overly rich. Flavors too sweet or salty. This is more of a bar/restaurant. Contemporary country music playing. I went to this restaurant with my mom two weeks ago and the food was so good. I went back last night and the people working acted as if I was invisible and did not acknowledge me or my family when we walked in. They kept walking by us like we were not even there. We asked if it was ok to seat ourselves and the bartender said go ahead so we seated ourselves outside. The waitress walked by us two times and looked past us like she did not see us. I finally got her attention and she scolded us for seating ourselves and said she has 6 tables and we should not have done that. She was very crabby to us so we decided to leave. We sat outside on the patio, and it provided a lovely view of the lush green hilly river bluffs. Our server Angela was a hoot and incredibly helpful. We ordered the Avocado Wantons (super unique), chicken bites (great crunch) and edamame (perfectly seasoned). Their grilled chicken club, Current Chicken salad and Burger. All had good flavor, however, the burger was supposed to be med-rare, and it was very well done. Truffle fries were also great! read more

After our regular haunts were full we drove here for Saturday night out. No reservations but got a table. Ordered the table side prepared Steak Diane. To die for!!! We were terribly disappointed by the service. We arrived together on the evening of August 16. As a party of 9 we realize it takes a pretty well oiled machine to accommodate a variety of drink and entre orders. Unfortunately, this was not a well functioning team. They blamed it on the expeditors and the staff's newness. Entrees were served beginning with the two individual pizza orders, followed about 20 minutes later with several other orders, then a later incorrect order. We later received two other deliveries. The final diner received her order after all of the othe diners had finished their dinners. A total comedy of errors! These We're not complex meals. They ranged from pizza to burgers to salad. Our food was delicious and the service, excellent! The table side Caesar did not disappoint! Fresh, creamy and a bit spicy! Le Terra Chardonnay by the glass was fantastic! Bought a Groupon for a three course dinner at Afton House Inn. Read the Yelp reviews after buying the Groupon, or I wouldn't have bought it. After eating dinner at the Afton House last night, I'm glad I didn't read the reviews first, and I am very happy that I went. To be honest, the Groupon was no deal. It was $70 for two three-course meals, and that had to be ordered off a special menu with limited choices. The same dinners could be had from the regular menu for the same price. So, no savings. Having said that, the meal was excellent. My wife's caprese salad was fresh and as inventive as a caprese salad can be - served on skewers with grape tomatoes and mozerella balls accompanied by really peppery greens (the greens were peppery, not that pepper was added). My caesar was excellent - sadly, no anchovies, but almost no one does those any more. Lettuce was very fresh and crisp, parmesan was freshly grated, and the dressing was excellent. There's almost nothing that makes a caesar great, but it's really easy to screw one up - and this one was really good. We both ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes, horseradish, and green beens. The horseradish was the real deal - no crappy creamed horseradish here - and was a small dollop on top of the ribs so my wife could scrape it off and put it aside as she doesn't like it. The ribs were very tender and incredibly flavorful. There were two very large boneless ribs, so we each brought one of ours home. The green beans were perfectly cooked; crisp tender with an amazing sauce. To me, the star of the dinner was the mashed potatoes (I'm always a sucker for the side dishes, anyway). I have always fancied myself a cook, and, in particular, the maker of some of the best mashed potatoes this side of heaven itself. With a tear forming in my eye, I told my wife, "these are as good as mine." The tear streamed when she quickly and wholeheartedly agreed. The apple dumpling dessert was equally good. By this time, neither of us was a bit hungry, but the dumpling was so flaky and perfectly caramelly (if that's a word), that it was impossible not to eat it all. Afton House has a credible wine list with some fantastic wines on it. It isn't long, but it does run the gamut of almost every varietal and region of the world. There are some very expensive wines. There are also plenty of very good wines from less expensive producers - for instance, the Bridlewood Pinot Noir from the Santa Ynez Valley in California is a good pinot noir at a very attractive price on their by-the-glass and by-the-bottle menu. Needless to say, both my wife and I were very happy with our experience last night. We shall certainly return and will occasionally bring friends with us. We surely can't speak to the comments about conferences and the hotel that are in the other reviews, but we sure did like our introduction to the restaurant last night. read more

We came here for an early dinner after the afton fest (cool cars and fun music). The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. The ambiance is casual and slightly loud, so our two kids fit right in ;) The spouse ordered the shrimp flatbread pizza and the shrimp were cooked perfectly, with that nice crunchy pop you expect from fresh seafood. I ordered the halibut special and it was tasty! It's hard to get the right Mix of spices and yet still allow the delicate flavor of halibut to shine through; and the cook staff did it just right. The kids Mac and cheese with edamame was delicious. The ultimate burger was also very good and our 7 year old almost ate the whole thing! We also tried the hand cut fries with truffle oil and aioli dip. Very tasty, but what would have made it perfect would be some mussels on top and a touch of white wine ( a Classic Brittany way to serve mussels). The entire experience at the Fine Dining section of the Afton Hotel was wonderful. We came here for a birthday dinner on a Wednesday night and the staff went above and beyond our expectations. The crab cakes, fondue, Steak Diane and everything else we had was so unbelievably delicious. Our server, General Manager Justin, was so attentive and made this birthday dinner an unforgettable experience with his outstanding service and preparation of the Steak Diane. The chef, Greg, made such delicious pasta, walleye, and tiramisu. Highly recommend this place; there's both great food and great service. read more

Went here after an amazing hike in the wilderness, the patio was open and we took the last open table as the sun set. My friend and I got a fish sandwich and the sesame chicken drops to split. The fish sandwich wasn't bad, however the sesame chicken drops were mind blowing. Really, both the friend and I could not get over how great they tasted. I've never had anything like it, this sauce was buttery & slightly sweet and mostly indescribable. The cubes of chicken were kind of crispy. I'm attaching a picture of it. I hate leaving bummer reviews but in hopes management will pull it together I have to speak up.. My husband & I sat outside this past weekend. Given one menu "Covid spreads with 2..". Service was at a snails pace with only 6 tables outside - zero inside. Multiple times we asked for our waitress.. to take our order, where our food was twice and the bill. 1 hour and 45 mins is what we waited for a unseasoned plain burger UGH and a chicken burger. While we waited once again for our change a table of 7 was separated. Only 6 allowed even outside... 3 children, grandparents and parents. Given one menu ... hahaha what a joke. Slow service, mediocre food at best , and overpriced. It took 10 minutes to get our drinks, another 35 to get our food-- burgers and soup. The pace was not busy. There were at least 3 servers, a hostess, a bartender and a food runner. When our food finally came out, the soup was lukewarm and the burgers overcooked (kids ordered them medium). There was a table that left before their food got to their table right when we arrived. We should have taken that as a sign! The only reason I gave 2 stars rather than 1, our server was friendly and apologetic about the burgers. read more

We stopped in Afton for my husbands 40th birthday dinner with my in-laws after being on the boat. It was a Friday night but it wasn't very busy. The location to the pier is great, which is why I feel ok with this place getting one star. I ordered the Covina fish sandwich and my husband ordered the walleye po'boy my father-in-law ordered the bison entrée. It took about 45 minutes to get our food from the time that we ordered and it was not a busy night. My father-in-law stated that his bison was dry, tough and tasteless. My husbands sandwich was flavorless, but the fries were good. And saving the worst for last, my sandwich was inedible. The fish was overcooked did not taste fresh and had approximately the consistency of oatmeal. This is supposed to be a fish fillet sandwich!! It had no flavor, no redeeming sauces and the texture was so disgusting that I gagged and could not finish my sandwich. It looks like such a cool place but I will never come here again...nor will I recommend it. It was very disappointing seeing as how we come down to Afton often on our boat in the summer and there are only a few places to choose from in the first place. We love going to Afton for their holiday events; Halloween and Christmas. We tried the Current for the second time this year, hoping this place will be good, but each time we leave disappointed. Food is fine, but cannot make up for poor service. Service means a lot, especially when you have a 18 mo and 5yr old. Today, we were skipped over and drinks were forgotten. Our waitress didn't care. However, shout out to hostess who was very helpful during our visit. We saw her much more than our waitress. She was the reason for two stars instead of one. read more

My parents and I decided to go to the Afton House Inn for the first time for Easter, and were not expecting anything major, except for a nice change of pace from being directly in the Twin Cities. Food: The food was at best "okay." I was expecting something a little more, but although they at least allowed people to dress their own salads (I hate it when they are already pre-dressed) the fruit was modly, the desserts were obviously a day-old and all pre-cut, because the ones that we got were so dry that we couldn't eat them, and the meat was either over-cooked or too heavily sauced. Service: Very attentive. Things just seemed to be geared toward eveyone dropping or spilling things, and not just my family, but eveyone else and the staff, too. But silverware was quickly replaced, spills cleaned and cups/glasses refilled. The servers were all very kind and accomodating, and even after a long day (we chose an afternoon time) were still friendly and provided a smile constantly, which was really nice. Ambiance: Well, it's kitsch, but cute. Something different. Don't go if you expect something really "up-to-date" or accurately restored. But, they have nice decor, high ceilings, no music, which allows people to talk, not too cold or warm, not crowded seating, and lovely bay windows. Overall, very nice for what it was. Would I go again? Maybe. Probably for an afternoon tea, or something like that, but not for a meal, especially a "special" meal, lke birthday or anniversary. but, if you are in the area, it is a very nice place overall. read more

Current is neatly tucked along Manning Ave/Cty Rd 95 in downtown Afton, and connected to the Afton House Inn. It's a locale which tends to sway more trendy/classy for the upscale demographic coming off of the St. Croix, but also is approachable for the rest of the population. This leaves it searching for a bit of a soul. The menu is manageable--2 sided, with a good mix of starters, salads, flatbreads, sandwiches and entrees. Prices range from $7-$18 for nearly everything. The menu seems to stay along this new american theme, with some odd iterations which seem like they're reaching. I think these are attempts to either accommodate a much more casual crowd, or conversely, impress those affluent yacht clubbers coming in after a day on the 'skiff. Here's what we had: --Brie/grape/lavender/honey flatbread. Oh biscuits, this was just superb. Complex flavors and surprisingly light. A great starter. --Apricot + Apple salad. Surprisingly complex and enjoyable. The mixed greens were a little past prime, but the diced apples, apricots and vinagrette were quite balanced. --Seafood chowder soup. This was a bummer. Where was the seafood?! We actually asked our server about which seafood was in it (we couldn't find any). She was great, mentioned there were getting complaints about it all day, and comp'd it without question. Weird miss, but still optimistic. --Turkey burger w/Edamame. The burger was meaty and flavorful. A nice surprise was julienned apple beneath the patty, which added this subtle, sweet crunch to the dish. The edamame was the best I've ever had--like, blew all of the sushi places I've ever been to out of the water. It was steamed in a siracha/balsamic/chili blend and was probably the most impressive element of our meal. --Fresh Seafood Sampler. This item doesn't even belong on the menu. And to think of it, our server actually tried to steer us from it. A poor plating of basic smoked salmon, some poke with a toothpick in it, and 3 shrimp. Really uninspiring, and looked like a stoned freshman in college put it together. Seriously. A terrible dish. Overall, I'd recommend Current with a few caveats. It's in a great spot for a day trip and has some bold positives. Unfortunately, the service is slow (seems to be a theme throughout the reviews), and there is huge range in quality. Befriend your server and research some other Yelper's thoughts. Go in educated, relax and enjoy the elegant ambiance. read more

I like the vibe of this place and they have very interesting choices on the menu- I do think they have great ideas here and there and some things are hit or miss. My Husband and I met in 2009. Our first date was the Catfish. Both of us lived in the cities until we were offered a small house in 2012 off of the marina right in Afton. We still live in our cute little house and since have gotten engaged at the now Current restaurant and we were married in the marina overlooking the Saint Croix. The Valley, especially Afton, is a huge nostalgic part of our immediate family history. The Currents menu and food quality has changed for the best, they definitely owe the head Chef for that! Apps are yummy, perfectly portioned and eclectic. Menu items are thoughtful, inventive and full of flavor. It's a perfect place if you're a foodie and looking to getaway from the cities. read more

We are walking distance from Currents and often end up here because it is so easy. The indoor/outdoor seating is great and we have been here several times this summer and I finally feel like I have to write. It has been real hit and miss. While the service has never been good, the food usually is. But this week? Horrible. Not only was the food just plain lousy, our table's entrees did not come out at the same time...like some were done eating well before the last entrees arrived. OK. I get it...pandemic, difficulty getting workers, but then shut the door. We got overdone, dry, tasteless burgers without the sides that were ordered. A pasta dish (previously a favorite) looked and tasted nothing like it did 2 weeks ago when we were there and it hit the garbage can on the way home. The manager did adjust our bill and that was nice. But really-we wanted to have a nice dinner on the patio not a discount. C'mon...we know you are a family owned business and we like to support our local places but we will not be paying your prices for the lousy food and service we got this week. The food was good but service was terrible. As requested, we checked with a hostess inside to be seated on the patio. We were seating and waited... and waited... and waited for someone to come out. Finally our waitress came out and told us she didn't see us, that the last time she checked she had other diners at the same table. Which I could have understood as an oversight if not for the rest of the meal. Food took 40 minutes to arrive. We all ran out of ketchup halfway through our meals and had no waitstaff nearby to ask. The waitress never once stopped to check on us, and when she finally stopped by to give us the check, all 4 of us at the table had empty glasses and we were not offered a refill on this hot day. Seems like this place is trying to overextend themselves with patio service they are not equipped to offer. I was also bothered by the smokers congregating right near our eating space, which had a nice view (!) of a parking lot. read more
