Came here for a friends birthday and was seated on the patio. It took the waitress 30 minutes to get our drinks and the only reason they were delivered was because one of us had to go in and talk to the manager. We were still waiting when another waitress tried to save the day only to have our airhead return with the first drink order. We were waiting on our food with empty drink glasses and had to order from the bar this time. After another ten minutes our food arrived. I ordered the shrimp/bacon flatbread and it tasted like it was dipped in a bucket of chum. The avocado jalapeño wontons were cold and tossed on the plate matter of factly. Ordered our desert for the birthday boy and the creme brûlée was over cooked and impossible to eat. Upon receiving our checks we got a disappointed sigh from the waitress when we asked to run our card right away. She informed us that she thought it would take us longer to pay and wanted to have a smoke break before running our cards. Upon review of our tab we noticed an overcharge on our drinks and needed to go inside and talk to the manager. Overall, one of the worst experiences at a restaurant. read more

First time in Afton, looked like a nice contemporary eclectic place with outdoor seating. The food was good, but our table on the patio was right next to a soda machine, I mean, like almost up against it! We thought about moving our table as kids came to the pop machine, or people tried to walk between our table and the soda machine! Rude! The service had a lot to be desired, took a long time to get our salads and flatbread (had the grapes and Brie, nice combination!) and our server apologized and said it was crazy busy in the kitchen. Although it wasn't crowded by any means. Then, we wanted to get going, it was getting late, and no one came to give us our bill. My husband had to go into the restaurant to ask and to pay. Not sure we'd go back, might try the Afton House next time. But it looks like the restaurants are connected, so not sure if it's the same wait staff and kitchen or not. read more

Usually this is one of our go to places to eat and grab a drink. Today, however, the service was abysmal. We were seated on the patio, and didn't have a server even acknowledge us. We patiently sat, and saw two servers go to nearby tables and completely ignore ours. We tried flagging down someone twice and no one came. After 45 minuets we ended up leaving. Super disappointed. Stopped by Current on a Sunday afternoon and I couldn't wait to leave. There were more flies than customers and our waitress was NOT very friendly. The menus were dirty and the radio was playing as loud as the football game. There were only about 6 other customers there and they were at the bar. This should have been a clue that I overlooked. The food was marginal, with the exception of the sweet potato fries and truffle fries - They were excellent. My bloodymary had an awful taste and I can usually drink just about anything. We spent most of our time trying to kill the flies and pretend that we were welcomed customers. The place seems like it could be pretty neat, but there is much to be done before I would ever return. read more

Current is a neat restaurant, the food is great, but the service sucks, and it has sucked from the first day. There is evidently no feedback to management about how things are going from customers. The place can be almost empty, yet it can take forever to get service or even pay your bill. read more

This use to be such a nice place, very friendly and welcoming . My husband and I stopped in for an early dinner. The place wasn't very crowded but the waitresses seemed very busy . This didn't bother us. What did bother us was when we asked the man who appeared to be the manager (maybe he's one of the owners) for assistance he screamed at us that he was too busy, he then went into the kitchen area and swore loudly at the staff. Went to Comedy night fish fry buffet and service was awful. Sat for 20 minutes and we practically had to wrestle someone to order drinks. Didn't have the bottle of wine we ordered off the menu and were just going to substitute a lesser bottle without advance discussion and it came warm. I didn't want to make a fuss so I went into my emails"whatever" mode. Noticed today we were charged for the original bottle and not the substitute. (Think craft wine from California vs mass produced from New Zealand. I can imagine the bar saying just give them a different bottle because they won't know the difference anyway.) Show was good at least and buffet passable even though they were very slow in replenishing the fish to the point I gave up on another piece. Afterwards I waited another 20 plus minutes to get our bar tab paid for which I again had to tackle someone to get the bill. Unacceptable. Lots of terrible service reviews on Yelp so seems like a pattern. Every time my wife and I go there we say we will never go again, but we relented this time because our friends wanted to see the show with us. Never again now really means never again. read more

I was very happy with the food and wait staff at Current Restaurant. I was pleased to learn they source local ingredients. The menu includes many great options at a fair price. Our server was very knowledge with all the food on the menu. She was able to describe the flavors for most dishes in good detail. She was also very helpful with selecting the right meal that fit my needs or I could say my hunger that evening. She did suggest we try the Truffle Fries and now would suggest them to anyone, delicious! The Current has a clean, comfortable atmosphere. read more

We come here a few times each year. Food is always excellent, and the service is always fantastic.

Beautiful night to eat outdoors. Although patio dining is right next to the parking lot, I did have a sense of being by the St. Croix river as you could see the masts of some sailboats and the far side of the river. Went for a nice walk down by the river after dinner. We were seated immediately, but I agree with a previous review that outdoor dining may be a bit of a stretch for their staff levels and training. We split the shrimp and andouille sausage jambalaya which was excellent. Spicy enough to go well with our beer. Meal was brought out with two plates and two spoons, but had to ask for napkins as napkins and silverware were never on the table. Combine the beautiful night, friendly waitstaff, very good food and our favorite beer, it makes it easier to overlook the shortfalls. read more

Went there Saturday night and was disappointed in menu and did not feel my meal was a good value. Had the walleye po boy and it was a very small sandwich for $16. Have eaten lunch their several times and found the lunch specials to be a much better value. We liked the setting and atmosphere and would go back for lunch. read more

We experienced unattentive, argumentative staff and this was not during the busy boating season. Food was average at best - food and beverages are overpriced. Disappointing - really would love a good go-to place in Afton since we have a boat on the river there. read more

Having eaten regularly here since it opened, I am so disappointed to see a definite drop in quality of food. Unfortunately the food prices have gone up considerably over the last year as well. The food used to be fabulous; fresh, interesting and always delicious. In the past year, we have noticed some changes; the hamburgers no longer seem fresh, the french fries lost their seasoning, less flavorful sandwiches, and other noticeable changes in overall quality. As mentioned in other reviews, the portions are small. My child's chicken tender order is down to two small tenders and a small handful of fries. Certainly all portions seem smaller than in past years. Please, please, Current! Whatever you did when you first opened, please go back in time and do what you did then. Until that happens, we won't return. So sad to say you have lost some regulars. read more

I had the grilled thai chicken flatbread and it was awesome! not too spicy since I don't do spicy well. The waitress was great to talk to and always available as we were the only ones in the place as we went at 9:00 on a Thursday night. My husband had the bacon and cheddar burger and loved it as well. I will definitely go back for the food. I ordered the flip flop and it had tomato juice in it. While I like tomato juice, it did not work in this drink. Memorial Day-While boating on the St Croix River, stopped at Afton for a meal at Current. Was seated on the patio. A waiter greeted us with menus. Came back in a reasonable amount of time and took order. The problem was the long wait for the sandwiches we ordered-- after 50 minutes we had to go so we paid for the drinks and left. The other problem was the waiter told us three times that our meals would be right out and again when I when in to tell them we were leaving. The waiter was put in a bad spot but should have been honest about when we would see the meals. read more

Arrived on a Monday evening with 7 people including my elderly mother-in-law. We were told we could be seated on the patio in 10 mins. 25 minutes later we were still waiting with no communication about our table. We eventually decided to eat inside. Three of us ordered the braised ribs and there was something definitely off about them and my brother-in-law, an executive chef for many years, refused to eat his plate and asked for the bison instead. The server was very accommodating but a few minutes later a middle-aged man appeared who did not introduce himself. From his tone and body language, he appeared to be upset with us. He told my brother-in-law that if he didn't like the ribs he wouldn't like the bison either. My brother-in-law told the man he knew what bison tasted like and still wanted it. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 is because the bison was quite good, and the other plates we ordered were good or at least OK (for the price). Definitely will not go back. read more

Dirty, rude service. Took my second trip to this restaurant a week ago. The first encounter was when they first opened, friendly service, decent food, and reasonable prices. Decided to try it again, drove all the way from the west side of town on a Friday after work to bring my parents there. They have visited the current a few times since they reside in Afton. We arrived and were seated in a dark corner, despite our reservation. The server Thomas (with the pony tail) sat us down and brought us our water. As I took my first drink of it I noticed a bright pink lipstick stain on the glass. I asked for a beer in a clean glass - receiving a snide remark from Thomas that they "only have dirty glasses." He did not offer a single apology, only sarcastic remarks. When we ordered I asked if you could get me an appetizer to make up for the unappealing display and oversight on the cleanliness of their serving dishes, he nodded and said no - Unsure on what his actually answer is due to his heavy sarcasm. He did not offer if I would still like the appetizer (which I did) and left. The food was mediocre, much better out there for the price. Spoke with the manager after this trip and they took my contact information, but I have not been contacted. Regardless I wish the best to anyone who has to deal with this terribly rude, unprofessional, unhelpful server. Disgusted that I wasted a trip and a Friday evening at this establishment. read more

The last three times we've gone to the Current we have been disappointed...Last night we decided to give it another try...We sat on the patio and waited about 10 minutes for water and menus...We placed our order.. their chicken dinner and a bison salad...I told the waitress if they ask I would like my bison med rare... We waited 45 minutes for our food..When we asked about it the manager came over and explained that the chicken dinner took at least 20 minutes to come out of the oven..no apology..people were seated 20 minutes after us got their food ate their food before we even received our food...When it finally came there was like a 4 oz piece of chicken..we thought that took 20 minutes?? My bison came well done...not the med rare I had ordered...we were also told that the kitchen was overwhelmed...the restaurant was NOT full nor near that...we were told that the last time we were there as well...in fact that time we left...they wouldnt let us sit at a table with a drink to even wait our the overwhelmed kitchen..so we left.. maybe time to get more help in the kitchen!!. this was 3 strikes ..we are done...sad to say...by the way our waitress was nice and very apologetic...if she gets a new job somewhere else we would love to have her wait on us.. read more

A group of us recently attended the wine Dinner -which consisted of three courses paired with wines. It has been about 4 years since we have done this, and our last experience was awesome. It is apparent they are doing all they can to cut corners on quality and experience. The wine they paired with the meal was nothing special--Cupcake that I can get at Cub Foods for $4.99. The Salad had abosolutely NO dressing on it. They threw salad greens on the plate with a flower. The main course tasted ok, except our whole table had cold food. No one came back to check with us--so we ate it. The desert was suppose to be served warm, and tasted like old Malt o Meal. The last time we were there they talked about the wines, had all of us taste --gave a background of the wines etc. Nothing this time. We all agreed we would of paid more for better quality and better service. It is too bad they decided to try and cut all the corners they did. The original experience was wonderful. I guess we should of figured they were having tough times--no one at all was in the main dining or the wine bar!!! We won't go back. Too many other really good places to go. I hope they go back to serving good food, and really giving a wine experience. But won't waste my money trying this again. read more

i dont think i have ever had a bad meal at the current. very original and creative. the wait staff isnt the greatest though. it is a lot like going to eat in europe. dont go here if you in a bad mood or looking to run in and out. do try if you want to relax. my kids really like the pizzas and chicken fingers they make. read more

Worst experience ever. Made reservations for 7:30pm at Current. First, they couldn't find my reservation and ended up telling me they had our table in their Afton room. This dining room is a much more expensive dining experience just around the back from their Current dining room. I believe both rooms are the same restaurant. Once seated it took 10 minutes to get a single glass of wine. Then ordered appetizer and meals. After waiting an hour for the appetizer and stopping the waitress twice to ask if the appetizer was on its way, I decided to cancel the appetizer. My waitress appeared annoyed and said we would not want to do that as the appetizer is almost done and it would take at least another hour for the meal!!. That meant after making reservations for 7:30pm I would not be served dinner till 9:30pm. I asked to cancel the whole thing. Again, waitress was annoyed and said she would get the bill for the wine! So- after waiting an hour for an appetizer, which never came, the waitress thought it ok to act flippant and charge me for our 1 glass of wine. Will never be back. I suggest you travel the short distance to Hudson and try out one of their fantastic restaurants. Current was a most terrible experience!! read more
