Every little rural town should have a place to eat as good as this one! We were driving through Appalachia and ended up in the little town of Big Stone Gap around lunch time, and ended up here. it's surprisingly big, with a large spacious dining area and bar and sports viewing area in the back. The decor is minimalist but nice and the seating is comfortable. Service was a little slow, but pleasant. But the food itself was unexpectedly good! Their French Dip burger was excellent. It's rare to find French Dip sandwiches using traditional roast beef these days, as roast beef has been replaced by barbequed beef or pulled pork. Here they applied the French Dip concept to a well-prepared beef burger. The au jus was excellent and when the burger was dipped into it -- it was soooo good. As a side, the fire-roasted corn was out of this world, too. Whatever spices they put on the roasted corn really take it to the next level. Also amazing was their Cajun pasta with broccoli and chicken (added on). The sauce was stated as being alfredo with Cajun spices, but it tasted to me almost like a combination of pesto and alfredo. I've had Cajun style pasta sauce in many restaurants and it usually has what you'd expect in terms of Cajun seasoning. Here I'm not even sure I'd describe it as Cajun really, but whatever seasoning they put in the sauce, they should patent it. The chicken was well-grilled, tender and tasty and the broccoli pieces were also wonderful. On top were two pieces of perfectly baked Italian style bread that I used to soak up every bit of that incredible pasta sauce. Even though this place it basically 3 hours from where I live, if I'm ever anywhere near here again, I'd go back in a heartbeat! read more

I went in for drinks before Christmas with friends. Sat at a high top table by the bar. My friends ordered their drinks and I ordered mine which took Ginger beer. My friends received their drinks and after about 15 minutes I stopped the waitress and asked about mine. She said they were out of Ginger beer and had to go to the brewery to get it. After another 20 minutes or so my friend's drinks were refilled and she then said they had to go to Foodcity to get it. Never offering me anything els. I finally got her attention 5 to 10 minutes later again and told her to just bring me a beer. This was after sitting almost an hour with nothing. After another 10 minutes passed I got the beer and she told me that they finally got the Ginger Beer and asked if I still wanted the drink. I asked if it was free because now I had waited way over a hour. She asked someone only to come back and say no. We were going to order appetizers but just finished up the drinks we had and left. Bad experience for sure!! And they weren't even busy. The food there is good but, SERVICE that evening was terrible!! We stopped in this cute restaurant on our drive from Tennessee to Ohio. What a find. We both had the French dip burger and it was outstanding. The burger had a nice crust on it and the au jus was very flavorful without being salty. The staff were attentive, friendly and quick to refresh drinks. If we lived nearby, we would be regulars. Not a vegan friendly place at all. We are vegan and stopped by at this place after finding a review saying they are vegan friendly but absolutely not. They don't have any vegan food options unless you want to eat junk like onion rings or baked potatoes which are sides. Great place to eat! We sat inside then moved outside because it was so pretty out. Our waiter was very accommodating John I believe was his name. Very kind and easy to conversation with. The food was awesome, we each got different things and shared. My favorites were the chicken salad sandwich, and mushroom chicken. Our third person got the pineapple chicken which was also very good. Although I no longer live in the area, it's so nice to have another option to eat out when I visit my family in southwest VA! I was especially happy to see some healthier options on the menu (cut to the pan seared mahi and sautéed zucchini side). The food was great and our server John was so nice. The only thing I did not like was the rice that came with the mahi, it was a Spanish style rice and I prefer plain white or brown rice. Nice place with decent sports bar fare. A shame that they have no regard for COVID protocols. Of the 15 - 20 employees (including a manager) we saw, only 2 or 3 were masked. Masks are not popular in SW Virginia but a business employing young people should have more regard for them. For reference, the local KFC had all employees masked even thought they were only serving at the drive through. read more

Update from last review. My husband and I still absolutely love the food here but something of note is that they do not have changing tables in either restroom. I struggled to change my daughter on a very wet sink with very little room while people were coming in and out of the restroom. It's not sanitary or particularly safe but I had to work with what I could and two women ended up having to wash their hands in the middle of me changing my daughter so it was uncomfortable for all involved. We love the food and the service is always great but I feel the owners should absolutely look into putting changing tables in both restrooms as there are single fathers/fathers that need access to one. read more

The atmosphere, service, and food at Curklin's were so good last night that we came back today for lunch. The Monterey Chicken was juicy and tender, the sides of zucchini and broccoli were tender and crisp, and the side salads (not iceberg lettuce) were fresh and amazing! The Curklin's Special is a flat iron steak. It was cooked (we requested medium) to perfection. And the chopped steak isn't hamburger; it's ground steak. Two people can dine for $30. We were visiting the area for a bit from Philadelphia and loved Curklin's so much we went back twice! The service is so great - everyone is friendly & attentive. They also have a decent local beer selection which is a huge win for us! On our first visit, we really enjoyed their potato skin appetizer, Monterey chicken entree & sautéed zucchini. My fiance also LOVED his fried chicken tacos, but wished they had other hot sauce options other than Frank's (he was hoping for a Mexican style hot sauce.) We each tried a local IPA and enjoyed those as well. On our next visit we got the pimento cheese bites - these are a MUST order! They were served on little baguette slices and had so much pimento on them. I'll be dreaming about these for years to come... We also each tried the red pepper gouda penne pasta and were not as impressed with this dish - his noodles were overcooked and mushy and neither one of us loved the sauce so much. Perhaps it was just a preference thing but it seemed to lack flavor - I didn't taste much gouda - if any at all. But we loved all of their other dishes & service was stellar, it was clean, everyone wore masks. We'd definitely recommend this place! Also this seems odd but their side salads are SO good - we each ordered these both times and loved the fresh bacon and cheese on top of the lettuce. The mountains were calling, so we went to BSG (That's Big Stone Gap for the newcomers). First time at Curklin's - they go all out for you as soon as you walk through the door. The space is crisp, clean and practicing safety at every point of service. We were cared for like family. Madison was amazing! as was everyone we encountered during our dining experience. Our drinks were wet. Our food was hot and cold as desired depending upon what we ordered with our group. Vegan friendly. Gluten-free friendly - oh shucks they are just all around friendly! First, it's great to see BGG get some restaurants ! I Travel there a couple times a year, so I would recommend this place . The food was great and our server as very nice and did a great job ! The place was fixed up and clean . lot of space , could use some additional fixtures , I'm sure they'll add over the coming years as long as business supports. Dropping off a check and not removing dirty plates; then coming back with change and still not taking any plates?
