I interviewed a number of companies for my move across the country and ultimately selected Cunningham. They did not present the cheapest quote, but they were recommended by multiple real estate agents. I was also impressed that they are a local, family owned company with high reviews. My move was complicated since I had shipments going to multiple states. Kathleen, Michelle, and Martijn provided expert advice every step of the way. I must have changed my mind regarding specifics for each shipment at least a dozen times, but they nevertheless guided me patiently and professionally with each change. They treated me like an important customer even though in the scheme of things my move was considered small in size. When something was accidently left behind by the packers, Michelle came to my house on her way to work to pick it up and got it included before the shipment was sent to its final destination. On moving day, the movers showed up on time and were professional, efficient, and careful. It was obvious that the team knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, one of the items shipped to another state broke during transport. Kathleen and Martijn helped me to submit a timely claim and then paid it in full within just one day. Also, I appreciate Kathleen's offer to help me find a repair technician for the item - I consider that going above and beyond! Cunningham movers did an amazing job of moving us into our new apartment. Any time you are moving it is stressful and they made it so easy right from the beginning. Michele was very professional and came to view the former location. We did a walk through and she had an estimate to me by the next morning. Before the movers came I looked around at the cauos in my living room and through this is going to take forever to pack. They actually had it completed in three hours, including loading the truck. I've known the owners for 30 years and they have moved my office three times, and moved furniture and items from my office to my home, three additional times. They are fair and reasonably priced, and are detail oriented, comply with all laws and safety requirements, including Covid protocols and set the highest standard for professionalism in the moving industry. Recently, a friend used a mover they found on the internet and in the middle of the move, the movers, who were unlicensed and criminals, as far as I am concerned, tried to blackmail him for a much higher price. I have made 3 major moves in my lifetime and this company was the most incompetent. They damaged several valuable items due to their incompetence, An example is a crystal wheat sculpture that the wrapped in paper and bent to fit in a box. This item should have been placed in a cardboard tube. When we filed the claim, they stated that the broken crystal was cometic. There are pieces and strands broken off so I am not sure how this is only cosmetic. Another example is a broken table leg. They claimed it was previously glued, but there is no evidence of glue on the leg. They also claimed that the piano was previously damage, but thanks to old photos I can show it wasn't. If am very disappointed in Andrew Herrera for recommending them. Truly the worst moving experience and customer service. They are only interested in your money!!!! First off, let me say that if you need storage and you don't access it very often, you have to check out Cunningham. Their prices for storage are at least half the cost of other "self store" places. The only catch is you need an appointment to access you locker and they charge an access fee, but even then you are still saving big if you get into it a few times a year. Also, we have used Cunningham for moving and they are just great. The guys take such good care of your furniture, wrapping each item in blankets and/or shrink wrap. Finally, the very best thing about Cunningham Moving & Storage is Charlie Cunningham! 40 years of moving experience and the most "irish" of gentleman. This company must be run by the Three Stooges themselves. They moved my stuff and forgot to charge my credit card. They figured this out almost two years later, and called me for payment in the middle of the financial crisis. So they're shaking their customers down through no fault of their own at the worst possible time. Since the credit card they have on file is long gone, they need a check, and I asked for a discount. They stuck to a measly 10%, with the implied threat of collections or lawsuit in their pocket. If you can't trust these guys to take your money, how can you trust them to take your stuff? A discount significantly more than 10% is justified here, Cunningham can write the loss off as the cost of hiring idiots to run his operations. read more

With steam pouring from my ears, it will be difficult to articulate well, but I'll give it a shot. In case you can't make it through my lengthy account below, here is the summary: - Expensive, but in range - Management (must) use post-its to keep track of customer info - Never call back or follow up; you have to call them- every time - Contracts a van line, so no accountability for Cunningham - Blamed van line for everything that went wrong - Lost $1,000 of my possessions, and blamed van line; van line blamed Cunningham - Delivered my stuff a week later than promised I was seeking a mover to relocate my small 1-br from SF to Tucson, AZ (a mere 950 miles). I used Yelp, found the highest rated movers (Pat Ryan) and called. They don't do interstate, and instead recommended Cunningham. The Cunningham rep was friendly and the owner came to my apartment to do the estimate. He was professional, and I got an estimate pretty quickly. It seemed high, but for a recommended, qualified carrier, I was okay with it ($3,000 for a bed, dresser, dining room table, and a bunch of boxes). When the movers came, they were on time, efficient, and friendly. They seemed to take pretty good care of my stuff. So far, it all sounds good and matches up with other higher ratings and reviews. HOWEVER, because this was interstate, Cunningham had to contract Arpin Van Lines to pickup the stuff from them and deliver it. Herein lies the problem. The Cunningham manager did a terrible job scheduling my delivery and getting back to me with any information. As a result, my shipment was a week late. When I called to ask where things were, the Cunningham manager blamed Arpin. I spoke with Arpin and they said Cunningham did not communicate the delivery date early enough and by the time Cunningham talked with Arpin, it was too late to get it to me on time. So instead of calling me and accept blame and communicating the change, Cunningham did nothing. They waited for me to call and then continued to blame Arpin. Fast forward to the delivery of my stuff. The movers were not particularly friendly, professional, or careful. I had small damages to my stuff AND was missing my most valuable item, my ski bag with two sets of skis. The Arpin driver said he never picked it up, talk to Cunningham. And guess what Cunningham said...not our fault, talk to Arpin. At this point, despite my verbose account, you should be sensing a pattern. The latest update is that Arpin claims that they can take up to 90 days to track down my stuff "per federal regulations." I reminded the woman that ski season ends in a few weeks and that I already missed one ski weekend due the late delivery. She essentially said, too bad. I would never use Cunningham for an interstate move ever again. And I would be hesitant to consider using them for in-town moves. I think their management uses post-its to keep customer records. I called this company for a quote and what I got was: - 1 hour exactly late for an estimate appointment (no call back to warn me or anything), just showed up late - the estimate process tool 1.5 hours for a 1 bedroom apartment - for partial packing and moving from San Francisco to their storage area, I got a rate of $180 for 3 men and 7 hours, that's just for moving... plus a thousand dollars for packing... plus $800 for gas and packing materials... - for this kind of money I used to move across country... - don't have any comments about how they actually pack and move... but for a situation where there is not that much stuff to move... this is a little too expensive... both on the rate and the estimate part... - so, one star off for being an hour late & the second one for being very expensive read more

We used Paul Arpin Van Lines in conjunction with Pride Moving and Storage of Colorado. We moved from Denver Colorado to San Francisco, CA and they made the move a pleasant experience. We packed our own boxes. They picked our stuff up exactly when they said they would. They wrapped all of our fragile items and put our HUGE bed into a box. They had to give us a 2-15 days window of when our belongings would arrive based on driving distance, the number of stops they have to make with other people's stuff and the amount of time it takes to fill the truck before they take off. Our stuff arrived in 8 days and the driver called the day before arriving and then a few hours before arriving to let me know where he was. When the driver arrived a local mover came to help him unpack. They unpacked everything and placed it where it belongs in our apartment and they set up our bed and couches. They took a thorough inventory of out belongings and everything was here and NOTHING was damaged. The driver's name was Dennis and he was very friendly and professional. It was fairly inexpensive compared to renting a moving truck or other moving companies. They also have the lowest minimum weight of any moving company (1, 000lbs) . We paid $1300 for 1, 460 lbs of stuff. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to any of my friends! GREAT EXPERIENCE! read more

After 30 years we decided to move cross state. Cunningham moved us the week between Christmas and New Years. It went off without a hitch. Cunningham packed our China, crystal and artwork along with our house full of furniture. At our new home they put all the furniture in the desired places. It took us another 3 weeks to unpack the artwork. Nothing was chipped or broken. The final price even came in under the quote because we packed more stuff ourselves than originally estimated. Cunningham was great! I got a referral from a family friend who said they had used them-- saying they were expensive but good. After calling about 4 places, they were actually middle of the pack in terms of price (moving within SF) and super easy to deal with seeing as I called one week before my move and moved on a busy end of month weekend. Val and Renato were on time, moved quickly but cautiously and were super friendly and curteous... they also made two stops for me to drop stuff off which they unpacked efficiently-- taking up less space than I had planned for. I used Paul Arpin Van Lines in conjunction with Cunningham Moving and Storage in October 2010 for a move from SF, CA to Philly, PA, and had an excellent experience. It was a fairly large move that took up over three quarters of the 18-Wheeler moving truck. We had a full pack and load that took 2 days. Four guys came out the first day and packed up EVERYTHING, including dishes, collectables (some very fragile) and so on...and the next day they finalized packing some things, then loaded the truck. The truck arrived in approximately 5 days (accommidating our schedule) and after the three or four weeks it took us to unpack the boxes, everything was intact, with no damage to ANYTHING...not even a broken light bulb. I have moved a lot and it is rare not to have at least minor damage on a few things, so this is a great accomplishment. If I recall correctly, the packers were from Cunningham Moving and Storage and the moving truck driver was from Paul Arpin. At any rate, everyone on both sides were great to work with and pleasant attitudes and hard working. I am a firm believer that if you take care of your movers, then they'll take care of you. With that in mind, I had donuts ready for them upon their arrival, had a cooler full of water and soda for the whole day, I ordered pizza for lunch and gave them a nice monetary tip at the end of the 2nd day. Of course, they didn't realize they were getting that until the job was done. Kathleen at the main office of Cunningham M&S deserves some recognition as well. I called over 10 times before the move date to make changes of what would or wouldn't be shipped (each time adjusting the estimate) or to ask questions...and she was always pleasant and a pleasure to deal with. I could go on with more positive feedback, but this review is already pretty long. The main point is that I had no issues or problems at all with this moving experience. This was the 2nd time using Paul Arpin (and the first using Cunningham), and I would definitely recommend them and I will definitely use them again on our inevitable next move. read more

A nightmare for mere mortals: for Paulo, Mario, Sua and John a snap. They were gracious, fast and have the physical stamina of athletes. Paulo even took time to find a box with my son's cars in it so he'd stop worrying about it being lost. He also wouldn't let me make decisions that would 'help' the guys not work so hard. Several times I said, "It is fine, just leave it there." Paulo would argue with me a little and remind me that I'd have to move it later without them. So appreciated. We had a flood in our apartment due to plumbing problems with our upstairs neighbor. We called Cunningham.....and it was the best move we made. Cunningham responded promptly, and packed our large kitchen pantry, furniture and personal items and stored them in our garage. This gave us the time and space to make repairs to the cabinets, carpets, replace drywall and paint. When the repairs were completed, Cunningham returned, unpacked our belongings.....and it was like the "flood drama" had never occurred. It was so easy to work with them. Like others, my move began well. The rep that Cunningham sent was very polite and genial. However, once he stepped out the door, things started to go wrong. It should have bee a clue to us when the rep was two days late sending us a quote in email. There was an excuse, of course, once we called and asked what was up. There always is. A few days later, the men came to pack up our apartment. I was very concerned about my things, so I chose a good amount of insurance and I asked every man there when the items would arrive at our new house in Texas. Every one of them said, "A few days. It's usually two to five days or so." Okay. No biggie. I can go without my contracts, my daughter's best friend stuffed animals, the books I need to work, etc. for two to five days. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at all. It has now been two full weeks since that apartment was packed up. When we asked Cunningham and Arpin van lines (the vans that actually carry the furnishings from one place to another) where our belongings were, they couldn't really tell us and informed us that we should have seen in the contract (I didn't see anything on the forms I signed, but they might mean the "rights and responsibilities" pamphlet, which is a literal book consisting of nearly 60 back and front pages) that they have the right to deliver from anywhere between the the 13th of this month to the 8th of next month. Twenty-six days. Now they will be arriving nearly a full month after they packed up our belongings and attempting to deliver them while we're not HERE to let them in to the house because we have to travel during that time (travel we scheduled originally to coincide with the reasonable schedule we THOUGHT Cunningham was going to keep). Which means, according to their rep over the phone, they get to charge us extra to store our furnishings until we get back. The rep was happy to report that, by the way. Do not use Cunningham movers. They are not up front about their charges or how soon they will be delivering all of your belongings. In fact, several people who work for them out-and-out lied. That's not good business. I am not at ALL happy. What are people supposed to sleep on for those twenty-six days? What are we supposed to use to live? The items you have a mover move for you are your personal belongings, the things you've worked for, the things that make your life liveable. And those things, for me, are sitting in the back of a van somewhere, not being used, because Cunningham lied and is taking horrible advantage of me and my family. read more

So I called Cunningham to give me estimate for moving whole household from San Francisco to Mountain View. Estimated price was very reasonable so I signed up for this deal. Movers, Paulo and Victor, came in time, were very professional and efficient, wrapped up all furniture with blankets, also covered staircase with blankets, so nothing was damaged or scratched. I have moved many times in my years and Cunnigham Movers, by far, were the worst ever. I moved x-country and there was over $4,000 of damage and loss to my belongings. The movers on the CA. end took apart all of my 5 bikes and my complicated desk and they reassured me that someone would put everything back together on the other side, with zero cost. That never happened. All my stuff went to a warehouse in N.J. and sat there for who knows how long? By the time it got to R.I., I could not beleive the damage to very expensive pieces that were completely ruined. They lost a bunch of my stuff to, one box included all the notes and cards my kids had ever made for me during their childhood. They will promise you the world and deliver shabbily. It took them 3 months to respond to my claim. They offered me $61. I requested a conf call, no response. THey are outrageously expensive too - stay away!!! read more

We can't reach anyone and there are no voicemails set up. Now we have to scramble to find a mover the day of. My family moved recently within San Francisco, and had a wonderful experience from beginning to end. To start, Mr. Cunningham himself came over to do the estimate. He carefully examined our apartment, went over all the options, and left us with a competitive bid that clearly stated, "Will not exceed," and they kept their word. We got a quote from another moving company, but decided to go with Cunningham because we got the feeling they would take care of us, while the other company dropped hints that if anything happened it would be on us (including parking tickets for the moving truck!). On moving day, the guys showed up on time, and got to work immediately. We lived on the fourth floor of a walk up, and these guys hustled even though they were working by the hour. They were all courteous and patient, and very careful. Had we been 100% packed, it is likely they would've come in well under estimate. Instead, they helped us pack the remaining items, and when we got to the new place, asked us before unpacking where we wanted things. We changed our minds on a number of items, and each time it was "no problem," done with a smile. I can't overemphasize how polite, courteous, and hard-working they all were. We bought them pizza for lunch, and they thanked us as though it were a gourmet meal. In the end, despite spending extra time helping us pack, they still managed to come in just under estimate. They offered multiple payment methods, which was an added bonus and one less trip for a cashiers check, etc. Although it's taken us six weeks to fully unpack (almost), we expected to find a few damaged things here and there but have yet to find a single broken item. When we began looking for a mover, something we had never done before, it seemed a daunting task. After numerous estimates, Charlie Cunningham achieved what no other had. Aside from being thoroughly professional, his estimate was lower than anyone else while his weight calculations were higher than most. As if that was not enough, no money was required until the move was completed and he contract process could not have been more agreeable. The movers showed up on time, 0930, and they did a superb job packing up two locations. They were efficient, everything was catalogued, packed and re-packed in not only large soft blankets but to the bigger items was added a complete plastic wrap; it could not have gone better. The next day they showed up in Minden, Nevada, on time at 0830, ready to unload, and by noon we waved goodbye to Jim, the driver, and 3-man his Reno crew. All in all, a marvelous experience, (if there is such a thing in moving an entire household) and we would wholeheartedly recommend, Charlie, Kathleen (the friendly voice on the phone and a very personable person as well), and the Cunningham Moving team. read more

Cunningham was recommended by our realtor when we sold our house in Dec 2010. They came and did a detailed survey of our house before writing the estimate. We called two other movers based on Yelp recommendations to get a good set of quotes for comparison and they were not as detailed in the estimate. Cunningham came out higher than the others, but was willing to lower their price to be competitive. In the end we paid a _little_ more than the lowest estimate to go with our realtor's recommendation. As for the move: - The packers were quick and efficient - The delivery was on time (actually 1/2hr early!); quick; and the movers were super-nice, helping us get rugs rolled out and furniture positioned. - everything arrived with no damage The actual weight of our belongings was a few hundred pounds higher than the estimated weight, but Cunningham only charged us the estimate--that is they honored the not-to-exceed estimate. In other words, it was easy, everything went according to plan, people were nice, and they honored the estimated price with no issues at all. Easily the easiest move I've ever done. read more

After making calls to at least 10 different moving companies, Kathleen at Cunningham was a refreshing voice at the end of the line. The man who came over to give me an estimate was very sweet, professional and made me feel comfortable with the process. We really wish we had the professional service some other reviews apparently had with this company - With us it was like dealing with the Three Stooges. It's an absolute miracle that some of the jokers who work in the office are still employed - All being related must help... The first one round was the saleswomen, who was impossible to speak to after giving the quote. Promised us great customer service & that they would arrange for the SFMTA signs to be delivered so that the van would be able to park outside the apartment. She made a really big deal about this service. Didn't hear from them again until we made the call two days before the first day of packing, asking where the signs were. A very flustered woman then called back & said "Our manager (Husband of the saleswoman) drove passed your building & decided the street is big enough not to need specified parking, we can double park - so we thought we could save you some money" - We should have really cancelled at that moment - Why lie like that? Surely being honest & saying that they forgot, would have been better. Please Yelp readers take a drive down 18th Avenue & Judah & see if the street is fine for a very large moving truck to double park - Over a three day move - two days of packing & the third day of moving out. So, without their help & with much cooperation from the neighbors & literally waiting on the street for cars to move, the space was miraculously reserved by us. This was not the stress free move they promised. The actual guys who did the packing & moving out, were very good - Unless they were the ones who lost / stole at least two boxes. The office manager was completely out of his depth in dealing with us, couldn't provide any details on payments or shipping times - This was an international move costing 26k - thanks for saving us $200 & leaving a big headache in return.... He was very good at telling us how busy they were. Finally, the one who made the lie up about 18th Avenue being such a wide street, finally did her job & did give us the full details, this took much too long & with us making all the calls. Our final mistake was made when we signed for all the boxes upon delivery. Nearly 400 items were unloaded & when four men are unloading, going in through the garage & front door in the rain - it is difficult to keep track of everything. In hindsight we should have personally not allowed any box / item to be taken out of the truck without us noting it's number down. AMS a company that Cunningham deal with, denied our claim for lost property writing in bold letters that it is written - to check the shipment before signing - So, if you have a very simple move that involves very little interaction with the office Three Stooges of Cunning-shams & you refuse to allow any item into the new property without checking it first, you may be happy with this lot. Otherwise, do yourself a favor & choose someone else. read more

Can't think of enough positive words to describe our experience with this company. We recently moved our aunt from an apartment in San Francisco in which she had been living for 50 years. She had been dreading and stressing this move for a year. Rocky, Victor, Max and Juan were professional, courteous, efficient and couldn't have worked harder. She was impressed and appreciative. Went back and forth about 1 stars or 2, but ended up with 1. I was referred to this company by a friend that used them and spoke of them highly, but gave me fair warning about their appraisal/pricing issue. Please read carefully: Before moving, get an estimate. You will be quoted a very, very reasonable price. My friend took the estimate, got packed, got moved, and was then quoted a much higher price by the movers. He stuck to his guns and did not budge on the price, and tipped the movers cash. If you intend to use this service, do so only after getting the appraisal and making sure you can stand firm on the price. In my case, I was quoted a price of less than $1,000 to move myself and my new wife's stuff from a 2BR to another 2BR not 5 minutes away. I was offered the choice of having 2 movers spend all day or 4 movers spend half a day, with packing and moving. I was told in the estimate that this would not cost an additional dime. However, I found out later that my new apartment's garage was too small for the big moving truck and would require a smaller shuttle truck. I was told this would "cost extra." I didn't realize how much. The estimated time was half a day, 4 hours, especially with the extra manpower. The 4 movers were very, very good at packing, but took 3 hours just for the packing. We then all drove over to the apartment, where I found that one had spit out his gum on my carpet. Not very impressive. They then spent another 3 hours unpacking and attempted to bill me for more than TWICE what I had been appraised for since there was a crew of 4 men, each of whom had allegedly put in 7-8 hours, even though they barely did 6. They also severely scratched up a brand-new TV stand we bought for about $300 a few weeks previously. I had to get on a call with a dispatcher for a very unpleasant and awkward phone conversation (with the head of the movers sitting and listening in) as I tried to get my appraisal price. Because of the shuttle truck, and apparently gas and driving for the two trucks (shuttle and big moving truck), the price magically went from less than $1,000 to what I was able to haggle them down to, $1,500. I grudgingly made out the check but still felt like I was being ripped off. I doubt I would use this service again. If you intend to, make SURE you get an estimate, and square away ALL possible details and expenses during the estimate appointment: -Gas costs -Packing materials -Number of movers -Man-hours for each mover -Whether or not you'll need a smaller shuttle truck to get into your new home's garage area if an elevator is involved -Absolute maximum price Also, be prepared to not budge on the absolute price you are quoted at the estimate appointment. They WILL quote you a much higher, and totally ridiculous price, after the actual moving is done. read more

Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! I've moved three times in the last 8 years and this was definitely the worst. The sales guy was the best part of the experience. He was well dressed, customer focused and personable. However, it was downhill from there. They underestimated the amount of possesions we had even though we got rid of a ton of stuff before the move, and they weren't able to bring everything down. They also refused to give us a date when they would deliver the remainder. I had my GPS system stolen from my car when only the movers were there for the 30 minutes it was in front of my house. Each team blamed the other person for mistakes made. We ended up with a full page of items missing and they made us itemize everything that was missing. They tried to hide the inventory sheets from us that would at least detail the number of boxes we were supposed to receive. They were also threatening and quite frankly scary. I've never been so mad in my life. The move was over a month ago and I'm still not very articulate about how awful the experience was! read more
