These guys are bad news. I'm a hard core do it yourselfer, so removed the manual transmission myself from my truck. I had already researched it and found places on the web that would swap out my transmission for a refurbished one for around $1000 including shipping.
I discussed this with Tommy. The idea was that if he couldn't do it for less, I'd just swap it out. He went along as though he were evaluating the situation.
He got in touch with me a couple times to discuss what they'd found wrong. Then in a couple weeks he called me and said it was ready and it was going to cost over $1500!!!!!
So then he went into 'haggle' mode. I ended up offering him $1000 cash, which he finally agreed to accept.
Fast forward 6 months. The transmission is now acting up, very hard to get in gear, grinding, etc. I took it back over and let the mechanic drive it and he agreed, in his words "You'd get a sore arm driving this"
So I had to take the transmission out again. Yes, they do have a 1 year warranty. However, when draining the transmission fluid, there was so much metal filings in the fluid and stuck to the magnetic drain plug I'm surprised it worked at all.
On careful consideration, I did not take it back for warranty service. I was concerned that all the loose particles had gotten into all the bearing, etc. If they did fix it, they would most likely just fix the immediate problem, then I would have another failure later from all the metal particles ruining otherwise good bearings and such.
So, I decided to chalk the whole experience as a big mistake. I went ahead and ordered a refurbished unit on line, fully tested, and installed that over the weekend, which is what I should have done to start with.
So another $1000, but this time I have confidence the people that provided the refurbished unit know what they are doing. It works perfectly.
Lessons: If you deal with Cumming Transmission, get a written quote before hand. And I would recommend not dropping your vehicle there. I would most likely have had to deal with the haggling if they had my truck hostage, but since all they had was the transmission, I had a bit of leverage. read more
