Great service, great food, out of this world ambiance. Excited for the new bar to open up!

My husband and I went to Culpepper's for my birthday dinner last night. Usually we go to Bin but we decided to try something new. We had a 7:00 reservation and were seated right away. We split the Caesar salad with lobster croutons and it was very good. I ordered the petite filet (medium) with half a lobster tail with broccoli instead of mashed potatoes. My husband ordered the larger filet (medium) and macaroni and cheese. Our food took an hour to come to the table and the waiter offered that they had multiple to-go orders and a party they were working on. When we finally got our food, both of our steaks were rare! However, we'd waited so long for our food that we decided to just deal. The waiter did offer to send it back. The table next to us had the same issue and she had to send her steak back two times! You would think a steakhouse would know how to get a steak right. I will say--the Mac and cheese was beyond PHENOMENAL. That's the only reason for the two stars though! The service was pretty bad! For a $250+ tab, you would think the service would be better than that. Our waiter kept saying he hadn't forgotten about us but it sure seemed like he did....multiple times. The staff was friendly and the food was great (5 stars), but the bottle of wine stated $38 on the Menu, but billed $68. Later, went to Bar and ordered the same Cab by the glass where Menu stated $10 but Billed $17. They corrected the error and I must assume that responsibly, management will review each and every bill to credit back that difference From past patrons. We love the menu and decor changes. There's something for everyone and every price point too. We've been several times at both dinner and brunch (each time have ordered different things). The service is what has set it apart from other restaurants in the area. We've had different wait staff each visit but they've gone out of their way to fix any minor kitchen mistakes and make our visit spectacular. We do dine out a lot and believe the price to be comparable especially as the portion sizes are on the larger size. We were disappointed they got rid of the rolls, The tortillas are a nice touch but I would suggest flavored butters to go with them (a savory and a sweeter kind). Couple of favorites for brunch have been the smashed redskin potatoes and the biscuits & gravy, For dinner the chicken & sausage is really good and of course the steaks. My wife and I moved to Rockwall in 2007 yet had never been to Culpeppers until last evening for a special occasion. The experience was over the top in every way. Incredible venue, incredible menu, incredible service, incredible intimate atmosphere.....and on and on and on. We've never owned a Cadillac yet hear from all who have how they universally rave about their Sewell dealer experience. Culpepper's has to be in that same conversation as one sees from the huge number of 5 Star evaluations. And this Rockwall venue with a very well deserved superb DFW reputation is in our very own backyard!!!! read more

Been going here since 1991. Was excited to try menu with new owners. In short. Not impressed. I got the $80.00 ribeye. It's was only 5/8" thick (not 16oz as stated) no grill marks, or char. It served with a pad of butter on top but immediately on delivery to the table. It was already cold to the point even the butter would not melt. Yes it was tender but no it was not worth $80 and I guess they thought I'd believe it was 16oz. The baked potato was just an average dry baked potato, not loaded at all. My friend ordered mashed potatoes, but was told they were out, so they just did some dry scraping out of some old baked potato, and said here you go, if you don't like that, we can get you some more. They serve cold tortillas instead of a hot loaf of bread or yeast rolls, which would've been much better. Honestly, not impressed at all. I may be a little bit hard to please because I was a meat merchandiser for 12 years, but I also spent 10 years in food service, so I know the basics of a good establishment. There may have been other items on the menu that are good just definitely not the steak or the baked potato or the tortillas. Probably will not return here unless it's by invitation of someone else, but I will at least know a couple of things to steer clear of. read more

Ordered faitias for two and chips and dip to go. Got home and i got just what i ordered i guess. Chicken and beef faitias ( not enough to feed one person) no beans no rice no tortillas. Just alittle meat and chips and dip? Not going to make this mistake again... read more

Came here for Valentine's Day. Menu was limited for good reason, but the portions were small, cold, and about twice the price of what the meal was worth IMO. 20 % gratuity was tacked on automatic. It just wasn't worth it. Staying at home next Valentine's Day and grilling my own entrees. read more

Food was delicious. Service was not so good. Although the management tried very hard to make it better. They've changed the menu. Removed the wonderful dinner rolls for awful tortillas. I mean real bad. Soggy and cold. When we mentioned it they explained that they had invested in a new tortilla maker. It's not working they're bad. read more

First time going since new ownership, it was amazing!!! Food was excellent. Server was very attentive and multiple waiters stopped by to check for any needs. Atmosphere was great for the dining area. We had a booth and highly recommend booth seating for date night or more intimate conversations. Tables in the middle feel a little awkward in main dining area. Coming out to Rockwall to try & see something different. They are very welcoming here, very friendly & so kind. I got to meet Chief Chad who was a pleasure to meet. Underwhelming. Live band was good playing the radio in the background at the same time bad. Jumbo crab cake bad all filler no real grab fins and gills. My wife got the petite filet and fried lobster. Figured out what the smell was but the filet was the size of a half dollar. Service SLOOOOOW 2 hours for 2 people restaurant wasn't that busy. Steak ok. Did I eat it yes was it good not bad. Prime cut maybe, overpriced absolutely. I see no real difference in quality vs a Saltgrass across the st. Dee Ford 3 forks etc are Prime steakhouses you can tell as soon as you taste your food. I went to Culpepper for a work party and overall the service was great! The wait staff took great care of our big group and kept up very well with everything, the staff most definitely deserves 5 stars! The food was presented well and tasted pretty good. I know we were a big group, but I think they should inform guests how the filet mignon is cooked or ask how they would like it cooked, it was very pink, I almost thought it was raw at first. The filet mignon was good though! The corn chowder soup as an appetizer was very tasty, reminded me of something homemade! The vegetables were steamed, but they were a little on the hard side. The garlic mashed potatoes were good and homestyle, definitely not box potatoes! The chocolate bombe cake was heaven, like a decadent chocolate brownie met with a molten lava cake and become a sweet endnote to what I would say was a pretty good meal! read more

We had an impromptu date night here, invited by Brett and Mitchell Morrison, a talented father/son acoustic guitar duo of Morrison Guitars in Rockwall. They were great, as expected! (They recently custom-made a spectacular guitar for me; see separate review.) We had zero expectations that Culpepper would wow us because...we are vegan. Had we not been invited, we wouldn't have ventured into an establishment with "steak" in the title; why put them through that?! But...we explained what we needed to our smiling, patient wait person and voila! We started with the house salad and the sourdough bread. For our meal we each had a giant baked potato and shared a large platter of sautéed Brussel sprouts, asparagus and mushrooms. One of us is big eater and he had to cry "uncle" before eating it all. We soooo appreciate it when the establishment is flexible and welcoming AND prepares us a good meal when "vegan options" ain't something they advertise. We'll be back! read more

Our neighbors invited us to this place for dinner and to see a friend of theirs perform on stage. I was expecting a bar and grill but was blown away with this place. It reminds me of a mountain lodge that just makes you feel welcome. It was a cold and rainy night, so the warmth of the atmosphere was perfect. So, we sat at a high table near the stage and enjoyed the music. My wife and I split a 16oz ribeye steak and a salad. They were both spot on. Before we left a very nice receptionist told us about the building and showed us the downstairs wine cellar. She has been here for over 14 years which says a lot in the high turnover restaurant. I am so happy to discover this place and know it is only 30 minutes from home. We will certainly be back. Check it out for a fun evening! read more

Loved this restaurant for many years. Came here every birthday, anniversary, mother's and father's day. Last visit was a week ago and I won't come back anymore. The price on the entre was surprisingly so much cheaper and it made sense when I tasted the food: extra salty and lower quality. The calamari and the sauce that came with it were not the best of all the finest restaurants that I had tried anymore. I was sad and disappointed. I packed my whole entre of salmon for to go. I don't think it's the same owner or the same chef anymore. The decoration (or lack of) is different, too. It's not the high end restaurant with authentic, unique decor and good food like it used to. read more

It was a good place ...but new owners in January of 2023 and this place went to Crap ,prices too high service sucks only if you're a drunk and you buy alcohol will they take care of you if you go there to eat they will treat you like a second class citizen and only refill the drinks of people that are buying stuff from the bar WILL not be back ! read more

Been coming here for years and nit just saying this but thus place revivals none. It's one of my most favorite places in the country. They brag about the grille they use to cook the steaks and they are truly amazing. The deep fried lobster tail is crazy good. We have been to Culpeppers a few times now since it reopened. Everything has been great up until tonight. I ordered chicken fajitas, and the order was incorrect somehow, but the other two people I was with got their food without issue. The waitress came by and apologized and said my food was in the works. More time passed (15-20 mins), and I never got my food and the other two people I was with finished their meals. I had to track down the manager who could not have cared less about the situation, and he did not apologize for the delay in service but instead gave probably the worst excuse I have ever heard anyone in food service give: "the bar and kitchen are slammed." I would hope so, since it is Saturday night at 7:30. He made the statement in front of our waitress, who told me later she was mortified. To me, this shows the manager cares for neither the guests nor his staff. lt's unfortunate, because the food is delicious, and the margaritas are pretty good. If they continue to hire Management like that, then the new location in Dallas will fail, and the location of Rockwall will become what it used to be, an amazing location for a crappy restaurant. I would give zero stars if possible. read more

This place is amazing! The customer service is hands down the best I've had in a very long time. I went by this place on a whim, I saw the sign that said they closed at 9, but my future son in law was proposing to my daughter at 8:15 at the lighthouse at the lake (with pictures etc. we weren't going to make it to the restaurant until 9). We talked to the manager and he offered to keep the kitchen open for us we arrived slightly before 9 was sat in a private room setup for our party of eight. Very elegant setting! Food you ask?!?! The food was also amazing, Quail Knots are a must have, I had the Sea Bass which delicious cooked to perfection! My daughter had the Waygu which looked delicious as well. This place is also a beautiful location for pictures. Our photographer took tons of pictures here. If you have a special occasion or just a regular occasion this is your spot! I don't remember the manager's name but if you just happen to read this, dude you are freaking amazing! Thanks for bringing everything together for us on such late notice, we enjoyed EVERYTHING! Culpepper's has the most awesome Texas decor of any restaurant I know. This makes it a nice place to bring people who are visiting from out of state. Unfortunately feel that the quality of food and the execution of service have both suffered increasingly over time. They have had a fair amount of turnover of managers over the years and some I have known. I have heard that the owner is resistant to changes needed to make the restaurant relevant. Their wine list has a good selection although you have to be careful because many are stored at room temp and I have had a couple that tasted like they have been exposed to too much heat. Last trip we had roar Pinot and it was spot on. The bar has has a good selection and a really cool area to sit and have drinks and possibly even watch a band. On our last trip the steaks were all cooked wrong. All but 1 was undercooked including a pork chop. One was sent back and still came back undercooked. The wait staff and management was nice, but it is hard to make up for a few hundred dollars of undercooked steak with a free dessert. I think they give away a lot of desserts. This is the second time we had the manager attend to us in the past couple of months and the prior time was the rudest server I have ever had. I'll forgive it as it doesn't represent the attitude I have seen from other wait staff, although they are often not busy and it can be frustrating as a server when you aren't making enough tips. It creates a bad cycle of lack of service and less customers... The calamari app is solid with nice steaks that they are pretty consistent in getting right. They have changed sauces so you now get a tartar and a cocktail sauce which is unfortunate because they used to have a nice Asian spicy sauce and at some point I think a remoulade The bacon appetizer is interesting and almost seems like ham. I think they used to cut it in pieces but last time it came as a slab you had to cut so similar in execution but the presentation was a turnoff. The wedge salad is massive and can be shared by 2 or 3 people. Tye ranch was uninspired but it is a fine salad. The steaks are ok, but you are paying Dallas steakhouse prices for inferior steaks. Convenience and ambiance have a cost here. I know I had a lot of criticism but I truly wish they would work on these issues. They also own oat house and farted calf and I love the farted calf. If you are showing someone a Texas feel type restaurant you can try here or you could travel to Texas or Javier's imho. read more
