If I could give it a negative star I would. This Cub announces in every way that what they would really like to do is to sell groceries without any customers. They have decided that the solution to their high theft problem is to lock up every household product with a dollar value above 99 cents. This "solution" means that you cannot look at the product you intend to purchase, nor can you carry it to the checkout yourself. Additionally, the already over-worked employee forced to baby sit you is not interested in the fact that you may need more than a nano second to consider your options before making a purchase. Let's not forget, that as the burdensome task of waiting for you to decide on your product falls to this presumably union employee, this arrangement forces them to treat you as a potential shoplifter. This allows them the space between you and them since, as you can imagine, they spend their shift being yelled at and generally crapped on. Well, Cub, at Midway. This is your grand plan to make money, is it? Have all your products behind glass, and then, if anyone has the audacity to point out how ludicrous this is, the only option is to complain to an employee who also realizes what a complete waste of everyone's time and energy this but is forced into compliance lest they complain and risk their $13.21 an hour, no benefits. So, I think it goes without saying that I won't be shopping at this Cub again. But I know the decision-makers don't read these reviews, nor do they care. Because if they did, they would have retracted their ridiculous plan of babysit shopping behind a glass wall, one employee shift after it began. As no one with actual power will make any real change, this review is for you, dear reader. If you had any doubts about exclusively shopping on Amazon, and I certainly have my own problems with that, consider that the final brick and mortars aren't soliciting any feedback. Or, perhaps to the union Cub employee. Consider the power of your union. Are you actually seeing the benefit of those union dues, while you're forced into trench warfare with your own customers, knowing full-well corporate doesn't listen to you either? Hey, Andre Persaud, CEO, you said you had to earn customer loyalty; Or was that just a good talking point? In a food desert that is midway, you don't even have to do that. Disappointed with this place. Always get run up on from addicts in the parking lot trying to get money. 2pm on a weekday, no carts, cart guy was bringing in 2 at a time. Everything is locked up, full grocery shopping, you have to wait 3-5 times, each times takes 10+ mins for an employee to arrive. They won't give it to you, they store it up front and your cashier has to get it, holding up the line. Weekday, 3 checkout lines open, lines 10+ people long. Super dirty good location. Nice grocery store, but kind of pricey. Once you park, you may have to get through a couple pan handlers before you reach the door of the store (at least I did). "Nothing to spare", my usual line. No self checkout, only two lanes open at a time, everything is locked up in cases, and I'm not allowed to bring items employees unlocked for me to the register? They required the employee to bring my laundry detergent to the register, and then the employee disappeared so I had to keep letting people go in front of me because my detergent wasn't there. The Cub should go to Chicago and join the rest of the Cubs. CUB stands for "Can U B" as in "Can U B more expensive? Didn't think so." This is the Minnesotan answer to the local grocery store that every other region seems to have its own version of. These are not bad but they're not cheap and this one screwed with me a lot because it told me that the hours were one thing, closing at a certain time, and then I show up to get my crap and they're already closed. Employees in the parking lot weren't even really responding to my questions. There were sketchy people in the lot, and it scared me because I was falling asleep here after too many Juicy Lucy's, but I don't recommend sleeping outdoors in St Paul to be honest with you from the looks of things. Definitely not in this neighbourhood anyway. Sketchy character - so I moved on and went to the suburbs and was much safer out there. And speaking of which how is it that even in the height of Summer it's cold at night in Minnesota. Anyway I've also been to this CUB in daylight and it was pretty standard. Well it was a decent cub foods until they decided to permanently shut down the self checkout section due to I guess "rampant shoplifting" you honesty might as well put a police officer here and the shoplifting will stop. The prices are far lower than at Kowalski's or other chains, particularly of staples like ground beef and milk. And, they're open 24/7 and easy to get to. I am never buying fresh fish from there again. I bought some sea perch fillers, and I had to refilled almost all of them. Bones, bones, and more bones in fillets is a serious liability. If you can't hire decent employees that can fillet fish, dont sell fresh fisg fillet. Shame on the meat manager. People trust you. Thankfully, I don't trust anyone, and I checked each fillet before i put them in my stew. And I had to put all the perch in the stew. I have rarely, if ever, been treated as rudely by an employee as I was in this Cub. I used their Coin Star machine and when I went to redeem I was sworn at by the cashier for bringing the receipt to her, forced to wait while she checked out others, all the while her saying how stupid Coin Star was, how inconvenient I was, and it was way less pleasant than that. This is a pretty decent Cub and of the Midway 4 (Rainbow, Walmart & Target) this is the place that I feel is the cleanest and best selection. I also like the fact that it caters to the area and has an extensive Latino, Asian and eastern European selection. Like others have said, the produce selection could be a little bit better but I think that is an issue with most box stores (kudos to Rainbow St. Anthony though) and I definitely wish they had more organics to choose from. Unles most locations that pay lip service to ethnic cuisine, this Cub has entire aisleS (yes, plural!) dedicated to ethnic food. I mean REAL Choizo, REAL Pockii, REAL noodles, rices and sauces. I always find something to try and get into my repertoire. The best part is at the end; dual belt checkouts! No more squashed goods with the shopper behind you beathing down your neck. Mark me disappointed again. So I go to Cub with just a few items on my list, one of which was long grained rice. Only the cookies me pack on the shelf of my preferred brand. When I get to the register it becomes apparent there is a hole in the bag. The cashier points out the hole and I say oh darn that was the last one one the shelf. He sets package aside and says oh too bad we have some in the back. I ask if he could have someone go get it and he informs me that he is the only one who knows where it is and no he's not going. How this place is still in operation is baffling. It's the only Cub I've been to where I feel like I could get robbed and stabbed in the same visit. Tonight there were no lights on in the parking lot. There should be bight prison lights and security guards surrounding this parking lot. Every time I go there, there are a ton of people just hanging out in their cars, by the exit, sitting on the bench by the cashiers, etc. Are they drug dealing, protituting, choosing who to rob? Who knows. Shop, and then go home. Tons of trash scattered around the parking lot is typical. Inside, fruits and vegetable quality is very sad, you frequently see refrigerator / freezer items sitting randomly on non-refrigerated shelves... Hopefully thrown out at the end of the night but who knows. I just don't understand why Cub upper management doesn't try to maintain a level of brand quality at this store. This college kid got a $15 Cub Foods gift card WHOO HOOO!!! Normally I only go to Cub Foods for specialty items or if they have a good sale for an item that I really like, but like I said, I got a gift card so you can bet your coupon clipping hands I was there in a heartbeat! This is probably the most diverse Cub you will find in the metro area and the best Cub for people watching by far! I was highly amused that there happened to be a Walmart AND a Rainbow grocery cart near the entrance!! This location/ area is used by a lot of public transportation riders (such as myself), so people tend to take a grocery cart as far as possible so that they don't' have to carry everything from location to location - either way I was very amused! A word that easily describes this location is sketchy! The prices are pretty standard and the produce is decent! Pretty much your typical chain grocery store. There seemed to be a lot of extreme couponers there, or maybe this is just me thinking that anyone with an overflowing grocery cart is a couponer due to my obsession with the TLC show Extreme Couponing (this is probably the case). This particular Cub tends to be a little dirtier than other Cub Foods; it needs a good Mr. Clean scrub down! The shelves are well stocked and well organized. They have a pretty big international section which I love. The prices for my staple items seem to be a tiny bit higher than Super Target (which is where I usually go)! You never know what kind of service you are going to get with the staff! The employee's service is either average or leaves one wondering "did that just really happen"? But if I had to deal with all the crazies that swarm from the Dollar Store next door - I would probably hate my job too! IT'S A GROCERY STORE PEOPLE! Nothing too exciting, but I give this location an A+ for people watching! I will stick to Super Target or Trader Joe's for the bulk of my grocery shopping! I honestly never thought I would be a fan of this location to say the least, but it's growing on me and it's too inconvenient to drive to the suburban one I used to frequent. I had to use the restroom when I got there and both my fiancé and I had to go. When I walked into the women's bathroom and it STUNK SO BAD of pee, wet dog, and a zoo. It was so disgusting. The bathroom walls were filthy and I honestly wanted to wait until I got home to use the bathroom it was that bad. My fiancé and I came out at the same time I asked him if he thought the men's was bad. His response was "it smells like pee and there is pee everywhere. I don't understand how you can miss THAT bad. " . I like how many self check out lanes they have, although they are always very busy and there are long lines for the self checkout. I think if you have like 30 items or less you should be able to use self check out. If you have the whole cart for the month for groceries, be kind and just go to an employee driven check out. read more

I am unable able to get the attention of any employees. I was at Cub Midway on Wednesday August 3rd 2022. I went over to the pharmacy to pick up some brand new meds. The lady that gave me my meds asked me if It was my first time getting these meds, I said yes. So she told me I had to wait to speak to the pharmacist first. The problem with that is, why didn't the lady ask me after I said yes why not ask me if I wanted to either speak to the pharmacist or print out everything about the meds with the Cubs pharmacy number in case I had any questions? What that have been so hard? Also she didn't let me hold on to the meds and wait for the pharmacist to speak to me!! Did she think I was going to take off with them? If that's not part of Cub pharmacy policy, that young woman should be ashamed of herself!! If that is part of Cub pharmacy, they sure as hell should be ashamed of themselves!!! While there's nothing revolutionary about this particular Cub Foods, I'm a bit biased towards the University Ave location because it's open all night. The upside to this is that night owls everywhere can pace up and down the blissfully-uncrowded aisles to their hearts content, and there are few (if any) uncontrollably screaming children running amuk. Also, if you time it just right, they'll be restocking some of the best bargains, which (in the case of fruit) means delicious first pickings! On the downside, though, the people in here at 11 pm at night can be a little... eccentric. And often not used to American culture yet (like, for example, that following someone you think is cute for 10 minutes around the store is considered creepy, not adorable). Still, this location has a decent produce section, a nice stack of their flyers and ads (with coupons intact) next to the door, and a decent organic & gluten free section for those with non-mainstream tastes. And if you go during the daytime, the people are the same as any other grocery store around the Twin Cities. They also have about 8 self-checkout lanes, which is fantastic when you're in a 'do-it-yourself' kind of mood. Or if you find the on-watch policeman cute, since you can sidle up to the nearest one and coyly check him out. Not that I've ever done that, of course. But you COULD, if you wanted to. Right. This is my "regular" Cub store. They have all the usual Cub-y items, but also have a surprisingly decent selection of natural/organic, Asian and Hispanic oriented food as well. Cub's butcher shop is decent, and smoked items including bacon are quite good. Produce is just adequate, sadly. I do all of my standard grocery shopping here, and leave the specialty/fancy items for another trip. I like the low everyday prices and great coupon specials (tip: get on the mailing list and they will send them to your home). The loyalty card with related fuel discounts at Holiday is a nice bonus. read more

Even though I am only giving them a two star---I find myself having to shop here frequently when in the area. Your choices are Rainbow or Cub in this location and I prefer Cub. This is a no frills store and they do have several areas for various ethnic food. I just don't think it is laid out very well and for the size of the store they could space the dang aisles further apart so that two carts can pass with no problem and the people that shop there do seem to hog up the aisles for some reason....This is also in very busy area the parking lot is typically run down looking with dirt and stuff flying around in the wind and some shady looking people and winos do tend to hang out along this plaza....They don't bother me and wouldn't stop me from shopping there but if you are fearful you would want to be aware and on alert... read more

Not all Cubs are created equal. I'm a big a fan of the Mpls stores as that seem to care about value and offering something to their customers. I love Cubs fabulous chicken and often stop at the pop machine for a can of soda. This midway Cub has nothing and charges over 2 bucks for a bottle of coke. The chicken from the hot bar is twice as expensive and they offer zero samples of bbq sauce or any other sauce for that matter Oh...there was ketchup. yes...2 packs. And lots of tables to sit but no napkins. Do they really care? Not in my book read more

It's my local supermarket that I seem to always find myself in whenever a brilliant idea for dinner pops into my head on my drive home. They are usually good at keeping things fully stocked. The place is clean, a friendly staff and always a cop or two patrolling around inside and outside (you need to feel safe when you are shopping, right?). The prices are always reasonable and they usually have some sale going on within the veggie section, which usually becomes incorporated in dinner somehow or the other. I got to say I am impressed with their selection of spices and ethnic aisle, about 8/10 times when a recipe calls for something out of the ordinary they have it. The staff seems to be reasonable friendly, well the people working in the aisles that is. They know the supermarket like the back of their hands and can tell you if they carry a certain product and where it's located (makes getting in and out much easier). I always end up using the machines to check out and it makes things even faster (since I rarely have a basket full when I go in there. I am tempted to try the redbox to see what movies I can get for $1, one of these days. read more

Cub has a terrible selection from the butcher. There, I said it. Go to a butcher. Other than that, I love Cub for all of the strange things you can get there. I've seen rabbit fillets, chitterlings, chicken feet, and the ethnic foods aisle has Indian, Thai, BRITISH, German, Dutch, African and all sorts of other foods usually not seen in a grocery store. Once, I needed a malt beverage for a pork shoulder I was making, and they had it! Weird. Also, English-style baked beans! The organic selection is so-so as far as produce but fine with other items. So, I get my steaks and chicken at Capitol City and ethnic delicacies at Cub.Also, go after midnight and there's nobody getting in your way. read more

My husband and I USED to go here at least twice a month for our midnight snack cravings (Ramen, Tea and Donuts) we went 2 months ago for Donuts and Tea. Only two workers were there, and Erica (Bless her heart) rung us out due to Madonna being overwhelmed by a family of 5. We walked toward the exit with our bag of tea and donuts, until Madonna rushed towards me (My husband is white) and snatched the bag from my hand stating the following: "Where do you think you're going? No one rung you out, you can wait in line like everyone else, no one rung you out!" Despite my husband and I trying to show her the receipt and reminding her that Erica rung us out, she went back to her register, our items basically hostage, until Erica let her know that our word was truth. I'm used to grocery stores of the Safeway, Ralph's look, so it was interesting to walk into this. It's a huge store, so you would be hard-pressed to not find what you're looking for. I think the prices are fair, especially compared to Target's groceries, but they're still on the higher end of what I expect to pay when grocery shopping. It was my first time in this cub foods, I walked in (apparently I looked lost immediately) and one of the clerks came up and asked if she could give me assistance. I said "yes I am looking for (explained what general items were on my list) " and she pointed me in the right direction. Everything was pretty awesome except for the lack of several items on my list.
