Aldi is a well known chain. As a person who shops with a multitude of other grocers (mostly Cub Foods), Aldi has the best price for produce. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to count on consistency with this location. Lots of items not available, more than they are. I love the price of the meat and seafood at this location. A 5lb Ground Beef ranges around $15, a family pack of Chicken Breast ranges around $10 and Salmon around $17. Those prices are unbeatable! The staff is always kind and holding the place together. The isles are usually neat, and it's easy to access everything and see the prices clearly. read more

I'm a big fan of Aldi's because of the price, but this store leaves a lot to be desired. They crammed it into too small of a space. Consequently, the store is tiny. You feel like you're shopping in a sardine can. Also, the parking situation here is the worst. During the various times I've been to this store, it's been nearly impossible to find parking, and the lot is so small it's an accident waiting to happen. Yes, you can get good prices on groceries here, but I'd recommend visiting another location where the parking is more plentiful and there's more room in the store. read more

I remember Aldi from Germany, and was glad to see that the chain is now also in the US. The branch on University Ave. is especially close. The things which I especially like about it are: German food (when not too expensive, anyway) Low prices on dairy stuff (heck, their 1 qt yoghurt is even a little less than at Wal-Mart. Don't waste any time going to Cub for this sort of stuff. Low prices on just about everything else, especially fresh produce and canned goods. Bike racks - I virtually always take my bike there. If it really were necessary to drive there, then just park near the White Castle burger joint. However: Some products are actually less expensive and of better quality at the Dollar Store (raspberry jam, frozen blueberries) than at the Aldi. The aggressive panhandlers outside of the store are REALLY, REALLY becoming a problem. PLEASE chase off these people, they are becoming a major hassle. That's why you have a security guard just inside the door, right? read more

I'm going to preface this with that I swear by Aldi. I have been a loyal consumer for 8 years. This store just had a grand reopening and I have received ground Turkey on two separate occasions that the meat is spoiled a full week before expiration dates. Im not sure what is going on here. If they have a problem at the processing plant, or the truck to cooler, or if the cooler is just the wrong temperature. I haven't had this issue at the Larpenter Ave store. They always make the situation right, but this is getting to be a major annoyance. read more

I'm sure this Aldi will be revamped in the future, as many of the area Aldis have been...but in the meantime, this location is perfectly adequate! The store is laid out kinda cramped, and as others have mentioned, and parking is NOT ideal. Bring bags and a quarter. Cashiers are nice, just make sure to have your money ready quickly. Aldi is not a grocery store to casually stroll into without knowing anything about it. Here's your basics: 1. Bring a quarter to get a cart, when you return the cart you get your quarter back. 2. Bring reusable bags. Aldi does not provide bags for free, but it's more eco-friendly and cost efficient to bring your own bags. 3. It will be busy, pay attention to where you park your cart in the store. In the lot, park across the way in the White Caste lot. The food at Aldi is affordable & good value. Eggs, produce & fruit, beans, bread-- this store is amazing for your staple items. Sure you aren't going to find any smoked paprika or coconut yogurt at this store, but for someone looking to grocery shop on a budget, this is your store. Aldi also has an organics line that spans a lot of different kinds of food- from produce to legumes to dairy. The meats are decent, however I still prefer a real meat counter & simply shop sales to keep it affordable. The cheapest chicken breast is not particularly good, but the hormone-free chicken is quite good, and still a few dollars less per pound than you'd pay at a Whole Foods/Lunds. read more

I am a diehard Aldi shopper and this is the location I typically shop at because it's directly between home and work for me. The staff at this location are great. They're always happy and joking around while still doing their job quickly. That's especially impressive considering some of the rude customers I've seen them have to deal with. The store is a bit messy at times but I blame that on the customers as well because I always see the staff working to straighten things up. The only bummer is the parking lot is very small so I stick to going to this one when I'm riding the lightrail - which has a station conveniently right next to this Aldi - or at less busy times. read more

Yep! This is my weekend ritual. Almond milk is 1/3 the price of Cub. Greek yogurt 1/2 price. I buy cartons of egg whites... about 1/3 the price of anywhere else. The lettuce and red peppers are so much cheaper, I can't even justify going to a "regular" grocery store. Onions, apples, basic staples... why pay 3x the price ... when it's gonna get cooked up any way!! 1. They don't have everything.. if you need basil and mint.. probs not gonna find it here. Sometimes.. not often. 2. The frozen section is fabulous! If you're having a party... save $$ for drinks.. buy your wings, dips and such here! 3. Specialty meats and cheeses (especially at holiday time) are worthy of the trip.. and soooo much cheaper than anywhere else! 4. They have a specific sprouted grains bread I can't find at any other stores! So good! (Miss Market has something like it for 6$) Ya, you have to rent a cart. Get over it. The parking is horrendous! (That's why I park in the White Castle overflow lot) I love the salty cashiers! They ain't playing. They get "scored" by how quickly they check you out! Aldi isn't perfect, but it's great when you're trying to live on a low budget. This week, I saved about 50% compared to my usual weekly grocery expenses. The store is very small but fairly well stocked, although things can be hard to find sometimes. They don't have ALL the essentials, but they come close. My mom turned me on to her Aldi's in Wisconsin when we went one Sunday to "stock up" on organic produce before I came back to the Cities. Pints of blueberries selling for nearly $5 in St. Paul were $1.79 there - we got 7! They were delicious and perfect! I always thought that Aldi's had second-rate stuff - BOY, WAS I WRONG!!! Some brand name stuff every once in a while, but we all know that brand name companies make off-label product anyway... so nbd. Personally, I prefer some of their cereals over the big name ones, and selling for under $2/box, fuggagetabboutit! But the key to my Aldi love is their produce section. It's absolutely incredible! I got beautiful asparagus, loads of perfect kiwi, organic bananas, oranges, clementines, Brussels sprouts ($.79/bag!!!), blueberries ($1.79/pint x 6 ), baby carrots ($.69/bag!) - and they have lovely baked goods, delicious cave-aged cheese (for a steal!)... Sure, you have to bring your own bags; and bring a quarter to "rent" a cart (you get it back at the end; BUT, for those prices WHO CARES! The only reason I it didn't give it a five star was for the checkout staff, who joked about "ah, sh*t man, I gotta actually WORK today," and with two open lanes and customers 6 carts deep in line, two staffers stood talking loudly about how someone "should" open a new lane, but they weren't going to do it unless they were told to. I love shopping at Aldi, any Aldi, for their high-quality brands that one can purchase for an outstanding price. What I DO NOT LIKE is how my purchases are thrown into the cart after the cashier rings them up. I take my grocery shopping seriously and take time to ensure my packages are sealed properly when purchased. Whipping the products, especially produce, into my cart after I take the care to select them is a huge turnoff! I get the whole concept of getting everyone through the line quickly as they're always so busy. But this practice is downright rude and some days I feel like halting the cashiers, getting a refund, and never returning again. read more

I was pretty much shopping for three households with a son living on his own and a daughter in college living in a house with a few others and then my own pantry--I am always trying to save money on staples and things that each of us eat. This is one of the worst Aldi's in the St. Paul area. I would definitely head over to the West St Paul or Rice Street one and avoid this mess if at all possible. The parking is tight, patrons are usually distracted and I feel at any time, I could be involved in a car wreck right in the parking lot. The inside is your standard Aldi but this one is a little more ghetto than the others and people are rude. If you must shop at Aldi, go to a different one. read more

It's worth going into this store at least once, just for the novelty of it. My first impressions: I love the idea of a 25c deposit to use a shopping cart. Effectively eliminates the annoying stray carts roaming the lot. There are 4 aisles in this store. You will find most of your staple goods, but often with labels you've never heard of. I usually buy store-brands at the chain supermarkets and Aldi's prices were probably 20-30% lower. However, selection is limited and you'll have to substitute less desired items if you shop here exclusively. For instance, no frozen yogurt, spicy mustard, or chickpeas. Maybe the selection changes week to week, I don't know. At checkout, the cashier rapidly throws your items into the cart, so the gallon of milk was chucked on top of the cereal box, making a crushing sound. I guess this is not a big deal. Then you take your cart and go off to a side area to bag your own stuff. You have to ask for bags from the cashier if you didn't bring your own; not sure if there's a charge. It's crazy but it seems to work, and you can save money if you're willing to settle. Or if you just want to get your staple goods and don't care about brand names. read more

4 years it's been open at this location? University and Lexington; on the 83 bus line, (Lexington bus) and the 16 bus line / University; and, on the corner near the Green Line. Store is always clean, fairly well organized, : it carries the same stock most of the time. Why do people think that Aldi is especially for poor people? Totally wrong. Aldi is for people who want to buy groceries at a price that doesn't put profits into stockholders pockets. i.e. brand name products. Aldi is privately owned; out of Germany. It respects its shoppers. Shopping at Aldi....it does Take awhile as a repeat shopper, to taste, know, understand, and rank its foods; For example, I no longer care for it's cheaper priced potato chips; no longer really like its ice cream, never too fond of its frozen pizza; yikes to its coffee brands. Yes parking lot parking ease can be an issue. Look carefully. Or park at White Castle. Aldi corporate doesn't do a good job letting customers know that 'Seasonal' Items can be there, then gone, for months. It's a problem with Aldi's signage: someone isn't thinking clearly. Lately, too many food items lack a sign with the price (signage problem, caused by corporate) Excellent prices on SO many food items. especially cheese, dairy, meat, produce, salad dressing, cereal, frozen foods, pasta, canned items. etc. Please..can't Aldi get a better tasting coffee selection? Its organic produce section needs alot more help; needs better selection quantity. Unpredictable choices for organic. Rarely rarely are prices rung too high at the register; 99.5 % accurate, I'd say. Current stockers and cashiers not as pleasant as former staff. More indifferent. Really,--- Aldi is an economic revolution in the world of grocery shopping. I shop here because of the prices and that means a savings in my pocket. I bus/LRT to this location and it isn't the best of all possible worlds but it serves its purpose. Purchasing canned goods, some meats, cheeses, fresh fruit and flavored ground coffee, it can't be beat. It's a warehouse store and you don't get all the amenities of selection that you can at some of the bigger warehouse stores, but get over the fact that you NEED to buy "brand" names. Most of the time you are paying more for the same thing just because it is a "brand" name. Anyone on a budget knows you go to this store for certain things and then you go to another for other things and another for other things. Some of the help at the registers in the past have been bossy but lately they seem to be better at appreciating their jobs and their customers. read more
