I want to start off that many Asian grocery stores in the Twin Cities are unfortunately not the best when it comes to service, employee benefits, a clean facility and great quality food- compared to your average grocery store like Cub Foods. However, we (Asians, POC, people who love ethnic foods) still go there because of the diversity in culturally relevant food options. Although I definitely agree with other Yelpers that the food products (especially the meat and produce) are sometimes over due and disappointing- I would say that I still LOVE the seafood options and believe that they have improved a lot (trust me, I remember when this place with called Foods Mart, had horrible service and overdue food including canned goods all the time and had a different owner). Also, sometimes you will find local businesses owners selling produce and goods in the Sun Foods parking lot (I think there is a yearly fee that vendors pay for a table).

First review of the year...sorry for the delay. This place is a little more organized than other Asian stores. It is big inside. They sell variety of fruits from SE Asia like persimmons, rambutan, durian, mangosteen, langsat and jack fruit. Their meat section is interesting from quail, duck, tripe, live frog meat and variety of seafood. I asked for bat meat and they said they stop selling them because it is not a demand. I thought that was interesting. I know their other location in Brooklyn Park sell camel meat. Anyways back to this location, it has a deli with small seating in a separate room. I haven't tried out the food yet but I know it is good. This place not only sell food but also accessories from jewelry bags, phone cards/covers, chargers, purses and other stuff. I know this place will not disappoint me when I come for grocery shopping because it is cheap. Parking is huge.

This place has just about everything at a super cheap price. Their fruits and vegetables are pretty good and they have a unbeatable price tag. On the weekends they even have a outdoor market that's full of friendly vendors and fresh vegetables. I usually shop here for my grains and specialty seasonings. They do have exotic meats here as well. Things like camel and goat. I haven't had the pleasure of trying any yet. So if you do try hit please send me a message and tell me what you think. If you are ever in the midway area and you are trying to take a adventure in the kitchen, shop at Sun Foods. Don't forget to sign up for their rewards program where they give real money cashback rewards!!

The fried chicken was crispy, and the sautéed green beans in soy sauce was really tasty! All at a discounted price after 6pm!

Sun Foods serves the community (Hamline-Midway). Sun Foods stocks hard to find ethnic items and unusual fruits and vegetables. It's not appropriate to judge Sun Foods by regular supermarket standards (i.e., Whole Foods). Don't go there looking for fresh ground beef - forget about anything organic. Do go there if you are looking for fish paste or camel meat. Hamline-Midway's poverty level is significantly higher than other communities in Minnesota, Sun Foods caters to that community. Understandably their hot food section is underwhelming but their price point is significantly less than most fast food chains. Late in the evening, they mark down their hot foods to get rid of. Tonight I stumbled across a few patrons waiting for the mark downs. I scored some fried chicken and strings beans all at $1.00 a container. I had a nice dinner for $2.00. Not fancy but perfectly fine. People need to adjust expectations to market. It's a nice find for the neighborhood.

Spoiled ground beef, supposedly freshly pack on the day of the purchase.

I also don't appreciate how when you purchase a smoothie, they pour massive amounts of it down the drain when it doesn't fit into your cup. At least set those out as samples. I'm glad that non-members can shop here, though, because I really enjoyed walking around. They had an aisle with bulk goods in bins, which I don't often see around here. They also had diverse jams, honeys, and crackers to go along with cheese; those were arranged atop the cheese gondola and on a nearby shelf. Checkout was fast, the checker very welcoming and pleasant. I'd definitely visit this market and others in the chain if I come across them again.

You know, I was going to give this place 4 stars because the parking sometimes sucks. But seriously. Should I really be that petty??? So I made a mental list of the pros and cons. Inexpensive flowers? Check! Decent selection of produce? Check! A frozen aisle of items that make you go hmmm? Check! Plus they do the occasional sampling of something and it usually pretty good. Also, they OWN the self branded kick ass condiment market. The fried onion in pepper oil? Wow! The elote dip for chips? Can't get that shit in my mouth fast enough! The green bottle of jalapeño cream sauce? I will drown my eggs with that stuff! Plus the people that work there are all pretty awesome while dealing with us, the general public, who are in the grand scheme of things pretty f'n irritating. Honestly there is more but you get the point. Not worth knocking a star just because parking can sometimes be difficult.

I especially love Villa Elena wine, frozen chocolate croissants, and frozen orange chicken. I DO NOT recommend their Filipino Adobo inspired frozen meals. I LOVE chicken adobo and was so excited to try it... but it was horrid. Service was fast and friendly. Ambiance is great except for the previously mentioned parking situation because of the very few parking spots near the front door, and the difficult underground parking ramp. Sorry, I have to take away a star because of the parking.

What is also outdated is the selection. The produce section is very small and the frozen/unhealthy foods sections are very large. The deli selection is also small and overpriced, in my opinion. But they had plenty of Lay's Southern Biscuits and Gravy-flavored chips (GROSS). I would rather just wait until the weekend and go into downtown St. Paul to shop at the farmer's market. While customer service here is usually friendly, speed and efficiency are not their strong points.
