I've been stopping here since 1997 when I started hauling meat out of IBP/TYSON just down the street. The staff has always been friendly and efficient, and the restaurant is always clean. Convenient small cafe attached to a truck stop. I had bacon and eggs, which were fine. The place was packed with a line, and the servers were doing their best. It's an older building but seemed tidy and clean. I suggest avoiding the first booth in front of the door. Taller people waiting at the door kept sitting on it, putting their butts in my face. I live really close to this place, but rarely go...and I'm not sure why! They have great food and the price is great. Sometimes I get a crabby waitress, but you get that everywhere. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because their breakfast is OK. I can make most of their breakfast menu myself at home. Except their gravy. Their gravy is worth a trip alone. read more

Excellent breakfast! So good we came back a second day while visiting the area. The staff was very friendly and truely want you to enjoy your meal. The owner even gave us a slice of one of their homemade cream pies which was amazingly good! Really the only issue was the sausage gravy. It's one you will either really like or really not like. So ask to have a sample taste before you commit to it. Atmosphere was muted diner like. With a small gift shop attached. Comfortable chairs and booths. A great place for breakfast or coffee and pie. Fantastic breakfast. I had the chicken fried steak with eggs and hash browns. My wife had the biscuits and gravy. Hands down one of the best we have had. Chicken fried steak was spot on, very flavorful and tender. Eggs cooked perfectly and the hash browns......crispy exterior and creamy interior. So much food we brought home our leftovers. enough for breakfast tomorrow. Nothing fancy , lots of locals and a real hit with truckers as the lot was full. Check out the pies. This little hole in the wall is quite unique. We drove into South Sioux City NE just to eat at this restaurant because of the reviews. We had the biscuits and homemade sausage gravy and it was very good and very filling. I had hot tea and my mother had coffee and both were very good and warming during the very cold weather. Being from Boston, where smoking in eating establishments has been banned for over 10 years, I was stunned by the wall of smoke that hit me when I entered Crystal Cafe. That being said, it added to the atmosphere and authenticity. I had to try the "Chicken Fried Steak which came with breakfast potatoes, eggs and toast. I was full by the third bite but it was so delicious I licked the plate. I don't remember what my partner got, but I remember we ate it all. We also got a "Sticky Bun" to go....proabably the best sticky bun I will ever have in my life. I would go at least 400 miles out of my way to try this place. I've honestly had fun at this sit down restaurant just interacting with people that I've never met, and this is the only place outside of a bar or club that I've had that experience. we need more places like this in America. the food here is good (I've only had the breakfast), but really if I got A. the people around me that I had the last few times, again people I'd never met. or B. the service that I had, yeah I agree with the other Google guy, I'd really travel a ways to eat here. The food at the Crystal Cafe is homemade and served hot so one might assume it is a good place to eat. I have been there three times in the last month and served by three different waitresses. Each time I ordered the special only to be told they were out. Again nothing out of the ordinary until I hear other patrons being offered and served the special they just told me they were out of! The verbiage that was used "oh I'm sorry we ran out of ... and ... I don't know why they didn't take it out of there. I guess I need to do that." They same wording by all three waitresses and all three times other patrons were offered and served the special. I would hate to think this is a racist situation but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is usually a DUCK. read more
