Authority Painting - Exterior paint job in Newark.

Our house was several years past needing paint. In fact, we'd resorted to stop-gap solutions to the…read morewood that was starting to get exposed! The previous painter 15 or so years ago had also done a goofy/lackluster job, which added to the complexities of our current paint project. Steve and Authority Painting were prompt and organized when meeting us for a quote/evaluation, and replying with the itemized estimate. Since materials for every house improvement project are backordered forever, we got on the schedule for a couple months out. Right on time for the estimated time frame to start, they were able to begin this week. Our buildings are a bit difficult as my in-laws, who owned the home prior, built TWO extra garages, so essentially it's like painting a large 2-story house, or more. There is also a ton of detail in the exterior, so this made masking/painting a real pain. Steve's team arrived on time, was courteous, and asked questions when they weren't sure about an aspect of our house. They left each day by cleaning and tidying their work area as well. The work itself was super-duper, and completed within the estimated amount of time. The paint went on very tidy and nicely coated and refreshed our house. It looks very high-quality and like it will last for years and years, which is awesome. Hard to explain unless you see it: the paint "pops" and the lines are very clean! Steve addressed all the concerns I had about the previous shabby state of the house and paint, and my concerns that he would need several coats, etc. His and his team's experience in dealing with a variety of problems proved a real asset, as they could anticipate and prevent problems that would have blindsided me if I chose to DIY (trust me, don't DIY exterior paint, get a professional!).

Super easy to work with through the paint style and color selection process. There is a lot I don't…read moreunderstand but they do since it is their world and not mine. Great at providing color samples so we could be sure of our final choice. We couldn't be happier with the final outcome. Thank you!

They were able to match the paint and make our outside wall look like new. I felt that they went above and beyond by getting to hard to reach areas and we are very satisfied with their work. We especially appreciated that Hugo came back the next day to touch up a few things that we had noticed. Both him and Jose were great! They also charge a fair price for their service. They also did some interior painting work and they did a great job there as well. They are very professional and talented in their craft. Would use them again for any painting needs we have!

Unprofessional, careless, and combative--avoid this company…read more Working with this company was a stressful experience from start to finish. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Skipped Prep & Unpainted Surfaces: While they did an excellent job on stucco patching, basic surface prep like scraping and sanding elsewhere was wildly inconsistent, leaving uneven finishes across several areas. Mold treatment was handled with a small consumer-grade spray bottle from Safeway rather than a commercial treatment, and they completely skipped painting several unexposed surfaces--such as the tops of beams and soffits--hoping I wouldn't notice. Messy Worksite & Property Damage: The crew left our property littered with tools, paint cans, trash, and paint chips across all yards at the end of each day. They damaged our attic vents and denied responsibility. During power washing, thin masking tape over our garage soffit vents blew off immediately, but foreman Hugo kept blasting water directly into the open vents--flooding dirty sludge all over a new vehicle and stored items inside. Combative & Insubordinate: Hugo repeatedly argued over clear mistakes. While applying a specialized porch product requiring a 4-hour dry time, Hugo started a second coat after just 1 hour. When I instructed him to stop, he ignored me and kept painting right in front of me, claiming he was "letting the product talk to him." I had to call Ibsan on the spot to force him to stop. Poor Communication & Pushback: Both Ibsan and his crew asked me for my paint choices at least ten separate times throughout the job, and repeatedly threatened extra charges for finishes explicitly included in the original quote. Whenever issues were caught, the crew claimed "it was like that before" until shown photographic proof. Hugo even spent three days arguing against fixing an accidentally painted window frame--a 5-minute fix--before admitting, "well it's worth trying." While the end result looks acceptable from a distance, basic prep work was skipped, surfaces were left untouched, and who knows how soon it will be before the paint fails. Save yourself the headache and hire a team that respects your home, your contract, and basic standards.

They took the time to make sure everything was done carefully and paid attention to all the little details. They were respectful of our home, communicated well throughout the process, and genuinely cared about making sure we were happy with the finished result. It's not always easy having work done on your home, but they made the entire experience feel easy and stress-free. Their professionalism and kindness really stood out, and the quality of their work speaks for itself. We are so happy with how everything turned out. We highly recommend them without hesitation! If you're looking for painters you can trust to do excellent work and treat your home with care and respect, look no further. We would absolutely hire them again!

From Aug 22nd to Aug 24th, I consulted with three independent painters. All three independently…read moretold me that the method used to remove the wallpaper was not appropriate. They explained that applying primer over the remaining wallpaper backing paper can seal it and the adhesive underneath, making proper removal significantly more difficult. I was also told that, in the worst-case scenario, portions of the drywall may need to be removed and replaced if the backing paper and adhesive cannot be removed without damaging the drywall. To respond to the Color Pro Inc. owner's comment: He sent me a refund offer the next day (Aug. 20th) and acknowledged that I had paid a total of $20,000 under the interior and exterior contracts ($10,000 for each, respectively). The exterior painting had not started. He offered to refund $13,800 while retaining $6,200 for what he described as materials, labor, preparation, and drywall subcontractor costs for interior painting work. Regarding the interior work, the work performed by his crew was essentially to peel off the vinyl layer of the wallpaper and apply primer over the remaining backing paper and adhesive, which was again an inappropriate method for wallpaper removal. In addition, the drywall company owner who was on site on the morning of Aug. 19th told me that the walls were not ready for retexturing. The proposed refund was conditioned on my signing a written settlement agreement releasing all claims arising from the project and termination of the agreements. I have retained the written correspondence documenting this offer. Since the matter is currently under review through my legal service, I am not planning to disclose the email itself. In addition, although the house is large, the interior painting contract covers only the walls and approximately 20% of the ceilings. There are no particularly tall walls except in the stairway area. I can provide detailed measurements later to clarify the actual scope of the interior painting work if needed.
