I had been wanting to try this place for quite a while. My normal go-to was closed unexpectedly so what better excuse. That being said, should have come here sooner. Parking lot was fairly full so didn't know what kind of wait to expect but I was hungry. I was solo so zero wait and had a hot coffee on my table before I even got my jacket off. We have been going to Crosswinds Restaurant for a couple of decades. It is always a great experience!! The food is inexpensive, and the portions are fair or huge!! We LOVE watching the airplanes arrive and depart!! That is part of the magic and the experience! Well...just know that apparently when it is hot outside, there will not be airplane action. There were ZERO arrivals or departures during our 90 minute visit. I didn't know that most airplanes don't have air conditioning, but I was advised that is a big factor in low traffic! When we visited a couple of days ago, we were expecting to see airplanes!! It was okay and forgivable under the circumstances! The food was great for the price!! I'm kind of stuck on the open-faced turkey sandwich served with mashed potatoes and gravy. Three of the guys ordered hamburgers and the burgers are huge!! One teen ordered the spaghetti, and I was surprised at the portion and the fact that the teen ate almost all of it!! It would have been four meals for me!! We missed watching the airplanes arrive and take off, but we enjoyed our visit!!! We will continue to return over and over!!! read more

Truly home to million-dollar views, and the food isn't that bad either. I found them on a website of things to do/see/eat in AZ list that highlighted Crosswinds as a very unique restaurant due to the views and location! They're located directly on the runway of Payson Airport - the waitress told us many times people will fly their private planes around the area, stop for a food re-fuel with them, then be back on their way. Or if you were like us, we hiked about 7 miles in Tonto and were looking for a fun restaurant to eat at before making the trek back to Phoenix. I called earlier in the week beforehand to make sure they could accommodate our group. Lucky for us, they are most busiest on Sundays [not Saturdays], so there was more than enough space for us. Our waitress was super since we were pretty much it for the evening. The menu isn't anything spectacular - your normal diner fare - but they do like to highlight the pies are made from scratch, fresh, every day. And they're on display at the entrance so you can see what's available. All of us were super happy with our food and views [we arrived before sunset]. Most of us were able to save space for pie. While IMO it's nothing that beats my mom's homemade pies, it's definitely better than every other place that tries to make good pies. read more

One of my favorite places! I try to stop in for breakfast every time I'm in Payson visiting my parents. The service and food are always outstanding and you can't beat the view! As a former Air Force flyer, I love the aviation aspect of this place. I was even able to find a copper cutout of my former aircraft (RC-135 Rivet Joint) hanging on the wall for sale here. This little outta the way cafe is top notch for food, service, and location. Seated on the side of the Payson Airport runway you can enjoy the meal while watching the planes land, park, or take off. Simple is as simple does. And that's all a breakfast diner needs to be when one is looking for a nice hot meal first thing in the morning. This quaint little hole-in-the-wall diner is conveniently located next to Payson's local airport, which hosts one of the most astounding views I've seen in a long time. The diner seating is configured in such a way where you can enjoy the view of beautiful Arizonian mountains in all their glory. But enough about scenery. Let's talk food. As with just about every place that offers it, I went with my classic all time favorite: the corned beef hash and eggs. The first thing that caught my attention was the portion size. You see, normally a lot of places these days tend to give out unjustifiably large portions of food. It's no wonder America is regarded as the fattest nation on the planet. But I digress. This diner offered portions that were just enough not to make a skinny guy feel fat. Though, to be fair, I can only speak on behalf of my *own* plate. Both my daughter and my friend had to get to-go boxes because apparently the omelets made here are a bit overwhelming to some. From the looks of them, I'd say they were three egg omelets so...that's understandable. Still, I can't really complain about that. Overall, nearly everything about this place is damn near perfect. Food came out in a timely manner, service was spot on, and the price is right. Oh, and they actually know how to butter toast; something a lot of other breakfast restaurants seem to fail epically at. If you ever find yourself in the city of Payson (for SOME reason) and are looking for a good breakfast place, you may as well go ahead and drive right past Denny's, take the extra five minutes to head to Airport road and check out this little diner instead. Heard about this place and since I was in Payson for the weekend, decided to give it a try for breakfast. Got right in and from the get-go, I was very impressed. The people who work there are downhome, very friendly, and they deliver great service and with a smile. Had a delicious meal of Eggs Benedict and it was prepared just perfect. Hot, fresh food and enjoyable too. Also, the ambience and view of the runway from the restaurant makes coming to this place well worth it. You can watch planes fly in and out, plus, after your meal, you are welcome to go out near the runway and check out the planes and area. I took advantage of this with my camera and got some great pictures. Just another fringe benefit of coming to Crosswinds Restaurant. The Crosswinds Restaurant is serving up classic American diner eats in a unique setting, right off the runway. The dining area is adorned with model airplanes hanging from the ceiling and photos of planes are framed along the walls. If you are a fan of planes this is the spot for you to come and get your fix as well as fill your belly. I was not really impressed with the corned beef hash as it tasted like it came from a can. The biscuits were hearty and most definitely made fresh however the country gravy lacked flavor. Seated within ear shot of the kitchen you could easily hear the witty banter that you'd expect from a diner however, it did get a little awkward when a server and cook got a bit heated over a patrons request that their hot dog be cooked better. read more

Our day trip to Payson took us to this little gem of a restaurant. We were greeted right away with a smile and sat promptly even though it was was quite busy! The view is beautiful. And the place has that small town feel to it. Everyone was super friendly. Our waitress Debbie was amazing. She was so polite! Her etiquette was superb. Very accommodating. The food was delicious. We loved they served breakfast all day and the breakfast was delicious. Generous portions. The burgers were tasty as well. We bought a pie to take home. Before we left the staff gave my kids some cups to dig in the snow and bucket to take some snow back with. Just all around a great place. Thank you Darla. Update: After several visits, I have to change my review. The food quality and service seemed to go down at every visit. The staff is nice, but everyone and everything looks very sloppy. The steak looked and tastes like jerky and the table crumbs were wiped all over the chairs. The menus were slimy and the bathroom is still disgusting. The bathroom door, walls, and toilet are always gross. And the airplanes that hang above the table have quarter size dust chunks hanging off. Even the door to get into the restaurant is filthy. Perfect place for pilots and aviation enthusiasts alike! Since Payson is an hour and a half drive from where I live, I only go there by airplane. After landing, you taxi to the restaurant parking, walk out and there you are in front of the restaurant. The food is good, nothing special. Nothing on the menu will make you have random craves over. Service could be better but not bad. Food does take awhile in my opinion but time flies when you have a scenic view of airplanes taking-off and landing. Overall food is ok, the only time I would come here though is when I'm taking friends and family flying. read more

That pie though.....it's dangerous. It's so good. I could eat a whole pie and it wouldn't even phase me. So good. PIE, I wish I can post a "Star Wars" Crawl that reads: PIE, An epic experience is encountered with the in the great wilderness of Payson. Hungry forces descend upon an airport runway seeking the elusive "Orchard" PIE. Who ever baked this PIE ate this PIE because the taste is such a departure from the homogenized cr** you get elsewhere. The crust was lite, flakey while not being over baked. The orchard pie has apples, blackberries, strawberries, and rhubarb. The fillings were not super sweet and the flavors were robust and just the right amount of tart. (Almost refreshing) Didn't matter if it's hot cold or room temperature. The have about 15 different pies and it's important to get their early if you want one. read more
