Breakfast on a weekday, 8:40am. NikkiC was my server. Daily special ($13.99), fried (grilled also available) pork chops w/2 sides: grits and hash browns. Cranberry juice, later added a Coke and slice of apple pie -- the breakfast of champions. Overall, food was fresh and well-prepared. Portions were generous. Service was great, and Nikki kept the drinks flowing. Restaurant was clean (including restroom) and well-decorated. Music volume allowed for conversation. Overall, a great dining experience. Conveniently located just off I-35W in Alvarado. A great choice for those wanting to level up from the typical fast food experience, at a slightly higher price. read more

The room is pleasant, if not cozy. We dined here based on reviews about their generous portions and chicken fried steak. It did not disappoint!. The steak was large; the coating crisp and flavorful. It was so fresh out of the fryer that it was almost too hot to eat. I was impressed that the mashed potatoes seemed real, complete with lumps. Green beans were fresh and whole. It being Texas, we ordered pecan pie. That was a bit of a disappointment: The slice was average size. It seemed to be out of a box. In all, otherwise a satisfying meal. read more

I'm giving this place 1 star because a minus star is not an option!! One word to describe the place is "ATROCIOUS " !!! We were there a few minutes ago and spent $53 for horrible food. The cook should be fired immediately. I ordered the chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes and Cesar salad. The lettuce was all brown and when I told the waitress she just made a face and took the plate away, not apologizing or offering another side; mashed potatoes were cold and tasteless. The bread was just hard and dry and the chicken fried steak was the worst I've ever had; meat was hard and chewy at the same time, no taste whatsoever and laying in oil all over the plate. My kids had a burger and a sandwich, neither one was good either. I didn't leave a tip because the waitress never apologized for the salad, never came back to the table to ask if everything was good; didn't even come back with the check, which I had to ask another lady for it. When this other lady came with the check she asked if I needed to go boxes and I answered with a hard NO and a face. I will never go there again and neither anybody with a sense of taste and manners. And let's not even talk about the flies around the plates. read more

we arrived about 11:30. The table next to us was finishing up. it was my husband and I, along with our 14 and 10 yr old daughters. we ordered promptly, the table next to us left. we waited. Another group was seated next to us. Their food arrived. Our kiddos were hungry and impatient and kept pointing out tables being served all around us that had arrived after us. I got up and found our waitress entering an order into a computer (or something in a computer) and very politely apologized, saying. I know yall are busy, but told her our issue. She said she'd check and then came to our table and told us she wasn't sure what happened but our order would be next. She also told us our entire meal would be comped. She was very nice and apologetic. The girls counted at least 5 more orders served around us and the table next to was finishing and paying. We decided to give them 5 more minutes. it was now 12:18 and we were walking out at 12:23. At 12:21 our food arrived. A couple who I assume are the owners both apologized. We said we understood and that stuff happens. The male said he had "mixed up tickets". When the server brought our ticket she says the owner would only comp 20%. We weren't trying to eat for free but honestly feel like after nearly an hour wait (meanwhile the table next to us now had the 3rd family eating at it), and a promise of a fully comped meal, that the owners should have at least done a 50% comp. We'll look at this as a good lesson for our daughters in showing grace because people do make mistakes but meanwhile we'll never go back to this restaurant or recommend it to anyone again. I do have copies of the receipt showing the 20% and the copy where we paid, tipping about 17.5%. We're normally better tippers, and I'd planned on giving the server $20 on a comped bill. As we were leaving she told us, had it been left to her she would have comped 100% and she also blamed another server for grabbing our orders to give to other customers. Maybe this cafe should reevaluate their processes. I'm honestly not sure where the blame falls, but do feel that our frustration and wait time was worth more than $10. read more

The reuben sandwich was the thinnest and smallest I've ever seen. With a table spoon of sauerkraut. Waitress was fabulous and friendly. I've now visited Crossroads cafe twice, with my mom and grandma. My grandma lives close so we decided to try it out. Both times we ate from their breakfast menu. The service is fast and the workers there are all very kind and attentive. It's a nice cozy ambiance, with good amount of seating areas. The breakfast was pretty good, we all tried a different breakfast skillets. Food is good, just could use a bit more seasonings maybe. But thankfully they have salt and pepper at the tables so that wasn't hard to add some more. Anyway we will probably go back again! read more
