In short, this is a beautiful bar with a great environment, but it's pricey for what you get and they could do with some transparency. Pros: Crossbar is an awesome place to be. The hall itself is a lively, open space with two floors. The second floor has a balcony overlooking the first, a nice architectural detail that makes the place feel more like a castle than a bar. It's well-lit, service is decent and they have a bunch of games around the bar, including a ping pong table, a foos ball table and some arcade. Cons: The food and beer are both a bit expensive, especially for Fed Hill (with Pub Dog right next door!). Actually, they don't list the prices of the beer on the menu, which is somewhat telling; expect to pay at least 6 or 7 dollars for a beer and possibly more (my friends and I ordered what I would expect to be one of the cheaper options). The food was mostly in the $10-15 range and, frankly, I found it disappointing; the bratwurst was lacking in flavor and on my order they forgot one of the advertised toppings, which I had to ask for separately. Even combined, it definitely wasn't a $10 bratwurst. Overall, a great place to hang out but I wouldn't get more than 1 beer and a pretzel here. PS: Clean/oil your foos ball table, Crossbar! This is definitely a great place to hang out with a big group of people. When you walk into the beer garden it can be a little confusing, but it's seat yourself service. The wait staff can take a bit to come over whether it's full or not, but another option is to go to one of their many bars in the back, off to the left or one of the two upstairs for faster service. They have a variety of German and local beers and their happy hour is on point. I usually only get the pretzel and it's always a hit. I love coming here and will definitely be back! read more

Came here after an Oriole's game on Saturday. The place had people but it wasn't overly packed. Service was quick especially the brats. Lots of beer options and food as well. Good for groups since they have lots of long picnic style tables. read more

You can still smell the newness of the wood stairs and floor. Sound system is way to small... so sounds like crap. Crossbar is a good place to go in Federal Hill if you are looking for a more chill spot. The beer is good and if you are a fan of German food, you can't go wrong here. It's one of the only places in the neighborhood with German food (bye bye, Das Bier Haus). I've always had a great experience here with their drinks, food, and service. The only reason I have to take away one star is the acoustics in the bar are pretty bad. It's constantly loud in there even without being very crowded. Maybe I'm old, but I've always found it hard to hold a conversation in there. read more

Fun bar, I really enjoy the atmosphere. Their food was good, at least a decent approximation of German fest food. My only gripe is that their pilsners tasted the same and I have a suspicion that their pilsners were the same cheap beer. They all tasted like bud light or Miller light, which is disappointing. I tried both the Hefeweizen and a dunkel and they were fine, but the pilsners weren't good. If you come here for beer, get anything besides a Pilsner. read more

We arrived around 6:30pm on a Friday evening. No one greeted us. Place was empty. We sat down at an open table. Weren't sure how to order so eventually we went and ordered at the bar. The beer and food we ordered was very good. When I went to pay the bill there was a man sitting at the bar who had a Crossbar polo on so I assume he is an employee. He was speaking very crudely about the bartender's sexual habits. I realize it's a bar but this was over the top for an employee. Won't be running back to Crossbar! read more

I was so excited for this place because D.C. has a bunch of fun beer gardens and I felt like Baltimore could really have used a good one. Unfortunately it's just more of the same sleazy federal hill vibe... rude bartenders (literally one stood for a solid 5 minutes with her back facing customers as she flirted with her coworker, who also seemed uninterested in said customers), bad music, drunk college kids everywhere. I'm a huge fan of Crossbar, but the staff needs to be reined in a bit. We went in recently for some beer and an immature atmosphere dominated. Employees drank behind the bar in a group, flirted with each other, discussed their drug use, sat on the counter with their feet pointed at customers, used foul language, and seemed generally disinterested in patrons. German restaurants/bars are my favorite, but I was disappointed by Crossbar. To be fair, the building has been beautifully and creatively renovated! We stayed in the main room, which is bright and open with communal seating. We were there from about 6-7:30 on a Tuesday, and the crowd and atmosphere were laid-back and really pleasant. We sat down and waited for a waitress, but none came. No big deal, I just went and ordered from the bar. I ordered 2 beers and asked if I could have a menu to look at the food options. The bartender very frankly told me that she only had 4 menus and I could not have one because she needed them. I almost closed my tab and left then, and in retrospect, I should have. I returned to my seat and eventually flagged down a waitress who brought us a menu. She was very nice, but was not allowed to take our food order because I initially ordered and opened a tab at the bar. We ordered the sour beef and dumplings and another round of beers. The sour beef was cloyingly sweet and tasted very strongly of cloves; pretty much the opposite of what sour beef should be. Other people around us ordered pretzels and they looked good. It seems like bar snacks are probably the way to go if you decide to eat here. Then I got the check and thought that I had been magically transported to DC; no wonder they don't put the beer prices on the menu. According to my receipt, the happy hour price for one beer was between $6.42 and $6.88 (depending on the beer). The beers were great, and I would probably still have purchased them if I had known the price, but it was unexpected in Baltimore and it felt deceptive. I confirmed with the bartender that a regular-priced beer does, in fact cost $8. Although the building is nice and beers are crisp and delicious, I can't imagine I will be returning. The Schnitzel Fingers with the curry aioli were PHENOMENAL. The bar staff exceptional and knowledgeable about the beers I didn't know. German hangout for games. My capsule review is: "Nice, but kind of pricey for what you get." Crossbar's space is pretty great. The main hall is two stories high with a glass roof and a big fan. You get something like the feel of an open-air biergarten with the advantages of having a roof over your head. German beer selection appears decent and there are some well-considered local draughts if you prefer something else. The pretzels are enormous and very tasty. We sprung for the beer cheese fondue, which was good, but the default sauce (sort of a dijonnaise) was very nice in its own right. With that said, the food was a mixed bag. I got the Spatzle and, while it was tasty, I thought that the portion size was a little small for $14. My dining companion got the sour beef and dumplings and was underwhelmed. In general, prices on most menu items were about $2-3 what we'd be happy paying. Beer was not too expensive although we were there on the early side and I believe we got happy hour pricing. read more

Can I please get a good dunkelweiss beer please....this is a "traditional" German brau house but unfortunately they did not have a mainstay of German culture. The dunkel I got was good but you can get Paulaner anywhere. My dad and I stopped on a pub crawl so we didn't get food but the pretzels did look good. So I came here on a blind date, and it was great. She seemed a little square at first, but I swear once we got that pretzel she herself became more pretzel-shaped (not physically, get your minds out of her gutter!). I mean, the buttery pretzel and the 2 really great dippin' sauces (one cheesy and one mustardy) really seemed to contort her personality into something quite pleasant and complex. One of the better pretzels in Baltimore. They were blasting 90's music, which really took us back, and we reminisced about our high school days. Well, turns out she graduated back in '81, so it was really only me doing the reminiscing, but to her credit she was very familiar with the Sublime song with the trombone solo. Color me impressed. The beers were all great (and big), there's ping pong to watch when conversation slows down (which happened a lot with us, given the difference in age). I was concerned that the unisex bathroom didn't have a lock on it, but you can't have everything. Ultimately, we both left hammered and filled with pretzels (we ordered at least 5 or 6 of them), but she hailed a taxi right there on Cross St when we left. It was a great time, great beer, great food, great music, and she was a good lady. A friend and I were in Fed Hill, enjoying a nice night without rain; it happened to be Game 7 of semi-finals for Stanley Cup.. we sat at a side bar (there's 4) where we found a cozy corner table with views of 2 major games and right next to open window. Our bartender, Jeff, provided excellent service, and actually a great atmosphere. Very relaxed, into the games and good reports/attentive to the clientele. Someone spilled a beer and the bartender immediately cleaned it up, joking that "this is my fault, everything is my fault." The woman was immediately put at ease in front of her date. Overall, this bar is poorly staffed and has extremely bad customer service. However, I am writing a review (which I hardly do) because of one bartender in particular, who I felt was discriminating based on race. I came here with some girlfriends to celebrate my birthday. One of my friends and I (we both are minority women) went up to the bar on the second floor to get drinks. Besides us, everyone else at the bar was caucasian male. One bartender (a caucasian woman) served everyone else besides us, even men who arrived much later. We waited politely for over 20 minutes. When my friend politely waved at the bartender and told her we were there before many of the people she was serving, the bartender rudely told her that she preferred to serve those men first and that waving in her face was not going to change anything. This upset my friend, who felt like the bartender was being racist, so that friend left the bar. Another girlfriend of mine (who is caucasian) and I then decided to go to the downstairs bar for a drink, instead. Unfortunately, that same female bartender ended up coming downstairs to the bar not long after. For context, I was the only minority at the bar. Interestingly enough, the bartender walked right up to my girlfriend and asked her for her order, took the order, and it seemed that once she saw that I was with my friend, she never fulfilled the order. I have tried to call this bar many times to report this employee. Every time I call, no one picks up. As a result, I feel as though I have no other option but to add this review. read more

Fun german style beer garden. Good selection of beers, both local and from Germany. It has a really interesting very open layout. I split the meat platter and it was pretty good fun too. The place kind of feels like a cross between a beer garden in Munich and an American style brew pub. It definitely caters to a younger crowd but I think they manage that well. Bring your credit card. If you don't you may not be served. To my amazement, when I ordered about $15 worth of food I was asked to leave my credit card on deposit. The first time have been asked that in 70 years of eating in 40 US states and a dozen foreign countries--and I never once walked out on a check in all that time. Clearly, there is a form of paranoia infecting the management here. I found this offensive, and on principle,offered instead to pay in advance, which I was permitted to do. My advance payment brought me a mug of beer, with flavors redolent of those of a Mars bar, and a waterlogged weisswurst (a white veal sausage) ) plugged into an overtoasted bun. Offered with sauerkraut , it arrived with three strands of the stuff. If you don't care for being thought of as a potential thief, avoid this place. read more

So I have never been here at night. Always in the afternoon and always with my four year old. This is probably the best place to bring kids in the neighborhood. The beers are gigantic and the waitstaff is friendly. There is so much space for kids to run around and an indoor tree which my kid thinks is the best. The food that we have eaten here has been good. They do German style dishes that go beyond pretzels and sausage and seem to get more into the traditional, though I don't know much about German food. read more

We went for New Years brunch (which was advertised online) and there was barely any staff. The waitress was nice but put in a horrible position without help. We waited more than an hour and a half for food and had to be asked after an hour if we even wanted it because it wasn't started.
