When you're really the only restaurant food in the terminal, you don't have to be good, and that's the philosophy this establishment has seemed to take to heart. First things first, if you have a party of three do not sit at a table that has two chairs and borrow one from a four chair table that only has one person sitting at it. An angry woman will come running out and yell at you. This is actually the first time I've ever had a situation where the food came out before our nonalcoholic drinks (fountain sodas). When our food arrived, I asked where the drinks were and I guess she forgot. Everything on the menu is $18-$22 and the portions are rather small. Stopped by here for some food prior to my flight taking off from Richmond. I got the shrimp tacos ($20) and they came out in about 15 minutes. The food itself was just ok, especially the guacamole and tortilla. The shrimp was the only pretty decent thing as it was seasoned and warm. Staff and service was alright. Cross Grain Brewhouse - Richmond International Airport (RIC) The service at this location was deplorable. They have a sign that says "Seat Yourself," so I did. Unfortunately, every table in the area was dirty. I picked the least messy one, moved the leftover tip, crumbs, and straw trash to the corner, and sat down. It was 12 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me--this, after I said good morning to the waitress as she walked by. When the waitress (Katrina) finally came over, she immediately asked if I was ready to order--no greeting, no attempt to clean the table, no sense of hospitality. The restaurant wasn't busy, so there was really no excuse for the lack of attention. About five minutes later, she returned to clean the table and thanked me for my patience--though I couldn't help but feel it was because she noticed I had my Yelp app open. I ordered the Country Breakfast, which, oddly, doesn't come with toast or any bread. When I asked if toast was included, she flatly said no, without offering to add any. I had to ask what kinds they had and request it myself. The food arrived 27 minutes after I sat down--definitely not ideal for anyone catching a flight. The breakfast itself was just okay. * Eggs: overcooked and overly salted. * Potatoes: crispy but more like hash browns than home fries, also quite salty. * Bacon: salty, but at least cooked perfectly. * Toast: arrived with the meal but without butter, jelly, or any condiments. When I flagged her down to ask for butter, she seemed visibly annoyed and said it would "take a few minutes" since she had to go across the way to get it. (Not sure what way she was even referring too.) After that, I was never checked on again for refills or service. Prices are on the high side--my meal was in the low $20 range--but the portion size was decent. It took about 25 minutes for the quesadilla to come out, so it wasn't speedy, but fortunately, this is a small airport and I could see my gate from the bar. The quesadilla was packed with chicken and had good flavor. I would have loved sour cream but the restaurant didn't have any. I enjoyed a good local IPA while I waited. Prices are reasonable. My server seemed overwhelmed at times as he spilled someone's drink all over my receipt but he managed to keep rolling with the punches and not let it stop him. This is the only true food option in terminal A and it isn't a very strong one. If you're in a rush, it's better to either bring food with you or get something from the Hudson news across from it. Food takes 15-20 minutes to come out. I will add that it was nice to be able to order a water bottle for your plane while you wait for your food. I felt a bit bad for the servers because all the guests were a bit moody and stressed about being late for their planes. Service was slow at the end, but my server was very kind. There are bar seats, booths, and normal tables in the space. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was a frozen cutlet that wasn't the best. It didn't sit well with me later. I also overheard the people next to me complaining about their hamburgers. This is the only warm food option in this terminal though. Perhaps I just didn't have luck with what I ordered. read more

Bartender was pleasant and professional. Aware of the challenges of taking the rest of a meal on board without mucking up your luggage she brought both the overly large standard box which she knew I wouldn't take and as an alternative, sandwich paper to wrap the sandwich in plus three small paper bags. Back to Cross Grain, I went with the Nashville Chicken w/ Chips (fee if you want fries). I appreciate having the blue cheese, coleslaw and hot sauce in little containers, but why not just pour it all on the sandwich to begin with. A separate container for the chips was nice. Given the lack of food choices I think this place has a bad rep. The customer service was good. The shrimp po boy (although could be about $2 cheaper) was not bad at all. Had a LOT of time to spend in the airport so was looking for a chill place to post up to do some work at. This ended up being a really nice surprise for an airport bar. The beers I felt like were shockingly cheap and they had a nice selection. Bartender super friendly and attentive. Lots of plug/seating space to use a laptop at. Dining options in the airport are limited and you'll pay a premium for anything you get anyway. However, this place just seems too high for basically getting the same deep fried items you'd get at a bowling alley. Watched the lady next to me eat her salad with plastic utensils as well. I struggled through some fried mozzarella. It is what it is. However, a bright spot was the french fries seem fresh cut. However they try to push their "chips" on you for your side. This place is terrible. I try to give places the benefit of the doubt. But can't bite my tongue on this one. If you do have to come to Richmond make sure you eat before going to the airport because the dining options are limited and the service is beyond terrible. Of course everyone is "nice" but that is code word for "slow" and "error prone". Service (D) Super slow. I get it if the staff is working hard and trying to keep up. But not at this place - zero sense of urgency and lots of hanging out and inefficient work. Also I get in the south that the culture is different but this was super slow and super inefficient at an airport. As a former waiter I was cringing at the waitstaff not bringing out multiple orders or drinks for a table, not checking on tables, orders coming out of order, etc. it was like a random walk with no training. Family get togethers are more organized than this. So it 10 minutes for me to get a menu, and another 15 minutes for someone to take my order - after I had to flat someone down. The waitress who finally decided to hand me a menu wouldn't make eye contact - god forbid she has to do any work. And then another 20 minutes for a crappy burger and precooked frozen no brand fries to come out. It's not like they have an extensive menu. Biggest pet peeve is when tables are waited on out of order - and that occurred numerous times while I was there. If you sat near the path the waitstaff was walking you got lucky and actually got a menu, could place an order and get food before your flight. Quality (D) The burger and fries were not good. The burger was overcooked and I believer a frozen 1/4 patty while the fries were clearly frozen and reheated. Probably generic GFS or some other supplier frozen products. Not good and a complete waste. Value (D) It was around $22 for some crappy burger and fries. Not worth it by any stretch. Complete ripoff. My expenses were being paid for and I still didn't want to leave a generous tip. Not sure where any of the positive reviews are coming from. I am assuming from locals or individuals who are drunk. Maybe individuals who have never dined at a "fancy" airport bar/restaurant/internet hub. I'm warning you in advance get food prior to going to the Richmond airport. Tried to stop in for a beer and first, no tables cleared off and no service. Went to the bar to order a beer and was told that I'd have to wait for a server. Once I serve the ticket came quickly, but after forty five minutes, the drink never showed up. Overheard the bartender arguing with some customers, claiming that they were not his customers. Yelling obscenities back and forth no professionalism at all. Did not attempt to help the servers. Or ease the situation at all. Absolutely atrocious. Place bills itself as a brew house and has a chalk board of beers. When I ordered the Pilsner, waiter left and told me that didn't have the Pilsner. I then asked for a lager, but they didn't have that one either. OK, weird for a brew house but fine. Food: Ordered the fried fish with fries. Waiter came back twice to make sure I wanted it with fries. When it finally arrived, it came with - you've guessed it - chips. But the worst part: Took one bite of the fish and it was still half frozen. At that point I asked for the meal to be comped and got out of there. Here's hoping I don't get sick on my flight. Previous reviews are also right about service being slow and totally random. Probably the worst experience I've had anywhere, ever.
