They're selling spoiled chicken. Second night in a row I've got chicken breast from here, and the meat has a significant sulfur like smell, along with a slimy texture. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and cooked it anyway, as the date said it was not expired, but it ended up being inedible. Very rubbery bizarre texture. Crosby's has the best Chicken Salad ever made! It's in the fridges on your right immediately when you walk in. Don't get the Henry's chicken Salad (that's shredded); get the white chunk, lightly mayo'd masterpiece of chicken salad in the second cooler then grab a loaf of french bread and comment below about how incredible it is!!!! read more

There is a disgusting stench as soon as you walk in the door. In the past I only noticed it when waiting in line near the door to the back of the door. Every single time I come to this Crosby's there is some sort of issue. The first time, they bagged more than 12 groceries into one single bag and on the way to my car, the bag ripped and broke the milk, that went all over my groceries. Today I returned and as I was checking out, there was a group of young female workers at one check-out, gossiping on their phones, not even paying attention to costumers. I started to walk towards the check-out and they legitimately threw the 'closed' sign up on the belt and turned the other way. So I walked to another check-out line and they told me to go to the express check-out, where one of the female workers from the group told me to go back to where I initially went to check-out. And of course, my groceries were packed very poorly and items were crushed. Only convenient when I need a few things, otherwise not a good experience. Also, VERY PRICEY!!! read more

I heart Crosby's for a multitude of reasons: 1) It's the perfect size for a grocery store. I can't speak for anyone else, but that entire section of movie store/book store/hallmark store/toy store that divides the freezer section from the produce section at stop and shop is not a tool that I utilize. It's actually just a frustrating hindrance for me when I inevitably forget something ALLLLL the way on the other end of the supermarket. That's not a problem at Crosby's. If you have to go back to the Produce Department it's not like you're making an enormous trek. 2) I've never been annoyed at other customers in the aisles ala Market Basket, and have never stood in a long line at the checkout. The other customers seem NICER than the customers at Market Basket. The cashiers and baggers are always very friendly and very efficient. I like their uniforms too. Plus, I get a good feeling about shopping in a private establishment rather than a corporate chain. 3) I think it might be magic, but there have been a few times where items readily available at Crosby's have NOT been available at Stop and Shop, which is just plain odd considering the size of the two stores. It's almost like Mary Poppins pulling a floor lamp out of her carpet bag. The two examples I can think of off of the top of my head are bread machine yeast and leeks. Tomorrow I will have to go to Crosby's and buy the yeast since I was at S&S tonight and they didn't have it. 4) It has nothing to do with anything, but I like how their debit card machine approves my card INSTANTLY, whereas at S&S you have to wait maybe ten seconds for the transaction to be approved. read more

oh, crosby's. i wish i didn't live paycheck to paycheck in this time of economic woe. i'd shop at your delightful establishment instead of market basket on highland ave, where nobody gives a shit about stopping in the middle of the aisle to pick out 87-pound sacks of rice. i would always take advantage of your fresh vegetables (especially your tomatoes that are bright red and not a sad pink). i love that you carry puleo's skimmed milk, because it is delicious and it is local and it is a dream come true. this is a great grocery store. it's actually quite large and has a surprisingly diverse selection of EVERYTHING, which i usually don't expect from "smaller" grocery stores. i love crosby's but i have a hard time shopping here all the time when i know i can get double the amount of stuff at market basket. sigh. here's hoping the economy gets better so i can eat vivid vegetables again. read more

I visited Crosby's for the first time this weekend. I absolutely love it. Having relocated from Boston, the prices are steeper than I expected, but nothing I'm not used to paying. The selection is quite good for the store's size, and the produce is especially great. I mostly shop paleo, so the nondairy milk options and nut butters, along with gluten free flours and baking options, were especially impressive. I live nearby and will definitely be back. read more

Convenient when I need fresh produce for dinner or something small. Over priced, if you don't know how to shop there. You have to be good with comparing prices and grabbing deals whenever available. I do really enjoy the family owned feel as opposed to the major corporation feel of many other grocery stores. It would however been unfair to say the clientele are "friendlier" than that of other stores because that is just untrue. Do however really enjoy their bakery, any of their brownie stuffed cookies are always worth a try! read more

First of all - never say Meh. I know it's a Yelp-ism - but trust me, you'll be glad you didn't. I have been shopping at Crosby's on Canal Street in Salem for close to 20 years now. I saw the renovations. I saw the transformation. I saw the mural being painted and the jazz band playing. I witnessed the new soup-n-salad bar being installed. I nearly missed the car though the front door incident. And I've seen Crosb's signature bean dip come and go. It goes without saying - I knows me some Crosby's, and I loves me some Crosby's. Crosby's is iceberg lettuce and beefsteak tomatoes - but they're willing to throw in a little romaine and some heirloom tom-ah-toes. In a word, Crosby's is your Neighborhood grocery store - with a capital N-. They have "the basics". They cannot - and perhaps should not - compete with the likes of Whole Foods; Stop & Shop; Market Basket; Shaw's; and they're definitely not in the same league with Trader Joe's - but then again, who is? You will not find much in the way of vegan or alternative products at Crosby's - and speaking as a vegan of many years, I know what I'm looking for, and what I need, as a vegan shopper. However, the management at Crosby's Canal Street IS willing to order and to stock vegan products - upon request. Ask them to carry Rice Dream Mint Pies, and voila, they appear in the ice cream case. Request Earth Balance Vegan "Cheddar Squares - and there they are, in Aisle 3. Want vegan mayo? Try Crosby's produce section near the tofu. Nice. The management will not, however, pro-actively order and stock a wide selection of vegan products, like say Stop & Shop, or Shaw's. Crosby's waits for their customers to "request" these products. So ask. You just might get it. So why do I shop there every week instead of driving to Whole Foods or Stop & Shop? Or, God forbid, Trader Joe's? Frankly, I like Crosby's parking lot. The Crosby's site is quaint, in that Vineyard or Long Island type way. Exclusive? Preppy? Small town? Yes. All of the Salem High kids are there after school working on the registers and bagging. But the Crosby's "team" are not snobs. They're folk. It's just small enough to not feel that *huge* Market Basket feel. And there is always the one, wooden bench out front - overlooking Marblehead Bank; Subway; Salem Liquors; Mei Lee; Cali Nail (meh - oops, ya got me); and Royal Dry Cleaners. So come. Shop. Rest a spell. Stop and smell the roses - literally, since they're growing quite beautifully in the middle of Crosby's parking lot. read more

My wife slipped and fell on the floor of the Manchester-by-the-sea location on September 21, 2016 at 5:45PM and seriously injured her ribs and knee and was offered no assistance by the store manager standing next to her. She voiced her her concern over her injury and the manager was anoyed that the incident was brought to his attention. We notified Bob Vello the general manager of Crosby's and have not received the courtesy of a response. Is this the kind of store,staff and management you want to do business with? read more

True, some items will cost you more at Crosby's but time is money and when I go to Crosbys I can do a week's shopping in 15 minutes versus the frustration of an hour or two at Market Basket . The sale flyer helps me save money and the Pick 5 deal can't be beat: I can get more than a week's worth of meat for $19.99! I have gotten Beef and Pork Roasts, Whole Roasting Chickens, Bacon, and really nice steaks, I never know what I'll find on Pick 5 but it is always a good deal. Once every couple of months I will go to Market Basket to stock up on things that Crosbys doesn't carry, but it is always a chore that I don't look forward to doing, whereas a my weekly quick trip though Crosbys is quick and easy. And the produce, cheese and deli selection is great too! read more

Love Crosbys! Just be careful though because it can get extremely pricey if you're not careful and go in there with the purpose of restocking your pantry. What it's great for: Excellent produce selection, great soups and salad bar, great fresh seafood (although can be $$$$), great selection of cheeses, dessert bar, great deli. In the meat section they have these great "bundle" deals. These are extremely great! It's a deal where you get to choose from several pre-packaged meat items and when you buy them all together, you save big time versus buying them separately. Tip - call ahead to ask what they have, choose what you want and order so it's ready for you to pick up when you get there, otherwise you might have to wait or come back another day. They also have this great every day deal where it's 'pick 5 for 20'. You can choose any 5 items they have in that selection and it's only $20! The choices I've seen on a regular basis are steak tips, lamb, pork roasts and chops, roast chicken, chicken breast, kabobs, steak, chicken wings/ legs, etc. Just a great deal! What to watch out for or know before going: watch your prices, compare shop before you head there to restock a pantry or buy a ton of food to entertain for a party because you'll be most displeased when you check out and realize you've spent a TON of money. Certain things here are much more expensive then Steve's; or especially Shaws or Stop and Shop so just be careful. For example, Land O Lakes cheese is usually 6.99 per pound here, while at Steve's (just down the street) sells it for no more than 2.99; 1.99 when it's on sale. Meats are also much more expensive here (when not in a bundle package) than at Steves. Why spend 4.99 per pound on ground beef when Steve's sells it for no more than 2.49 (they switch every week at steve's by the way, one week it's 1.49 for gr. beef and the next it's 2.49 - just an insider's tip) Last but not least - very warm and friendly staff. we go to Crosby's when we don't feel like heading into the Highland Ave thunderdome, and if they don't have what we need at Steves. it's a small-ish store to be called a "supermarket", but they have a decent selection of goods, great salad bar, and awesome soups. I don't get some of the negative reviews on here, we've always had a good experience with the service, most of the people who work there are local kids. It's a mom and pops store so the prices are a little higher on some things. I go there sometime because its close by and there per-made meals plus baked goods and produce are normally good. For there size they do have a decent selection of grocery items. I have always found the staff friendly and unlike a comment made by another reviewer I really don't mind if they don't know my by first name.
