So many unique kitchen items. If only I had enough space in my bags I would have taken so much home. The staff was friendly. They have a cute miniature tarot quarter machine at the front. That is the only thing I was able to take home with me, but I would definitely recommend to any cooks in your life, or just to grab those tiny tarot cards. read more

This is a cute little shop in the downtown district of Salem. There is a parisien feel with colors and the way the boutique is laid out. Staff are always warm and welcoming, though I don't go all too often, they seem to enjoy chatting with customers. This is a wonderful independent small business. There's merchandise for cookware, kitchen supplies, artisan foods, beer and wine. My main reason for coming here? They carry a small but beautiful selection for wine, and the largest selection of mead I've ever seen in any liquor store or shop. read more

When we first passed this place I was convinced it was a Bath & Body Works type place, but upon closer inspection I realized it was a specialty foods, beer, and wine store. Totally my kind of thing! Annnnnnnnd - they do an array of tastings here (mead, wines for Thanksgiving, etc.) which, c'mon, how can you not love? Also, there were olive oil samples out when I was there, but I couldn't find anything to actually sample it with (no bread or spoons or toothpicks, nothing!). I was disappointed initially with the overabundance of Stonewall Kitchen's products that seemed to be absolutely everywhere here. Being from Maine, I was hoping for something a little more specifically local than that. I'm not sure I ever really found that here, but I did appreciate the simplicity and lay-out of the store, along with their beer and wine selection. It had quite the variety and the prices were fabulous! I had heard of banana bread beer, but hadn't found it until coming here (I also purchased a pecan-flavored beer which I had never seen before either). Excited to try those! The lone staff member seemed super pleasant, though she was unaware they even carried banana bread flavored beer (and thus couldn't answer any of my follow-up questions regarding the sticky toffee pudding beer the same company made). If you're someone who loves either/both useful or quirky food or drink-related gifts... or just like quality, premium food and drink ingredients, this place is definitely worth checking out! read more

Love this place. They've thought of everything gastronomic and culinary. I've been introduced to great bottled sparklers, kitchen accoutrements, specialty salts and good, good chocolate here. Speaking of chocolate, it's the local spot for me to go for my treats from home (Crunchie and Aero, I'm looking at you). They always remember me which is a very nice touch. I definitely come in on a basis from nearby Swampscott, but I am sure they have more regular regulars in a city of locals. The attentiveness is so appreciated! They even ordered a product I told them I'd be happy to see in stock! I am sure other reasons went into that choice, but it definitely brought my experience to the next level! In sum, amazing selection, very well curated, and the service is out of this world. Excited that they've opened a new store, because nothing makes me happier than seeing a small business succeed. Walking past Pamplemousse I saw their signage for fine wine & craft beer. Since I was in Salem on a Monday, I was disappointed I would not be able to stop by Far From the Tree Cider to do a tasting while in town. Crossing my fingers, I wandered to the far wall of the store and behold! All of the cider! And available to rip apart and create one's own custom six pack! Not only were there two FFtT ciders, but they had a ton of other ciders I'd hoped to see during my brief New England trip, so I was able to grab one of each to take home and try later. I noticed they also had a ton of these options available as singles in the fridge. This seems perfect if there are any BYO restaurants around... I don't think you can just walk around with alcohol in Salem, but you could certainly take it back to where you're staying...or get creative... errr... You may find ciders from Champlain Cider, Downeast, FFtF, Bantam, Citizen Cider, Rekorderlig, and Cider Creek, to name a few. There was also a really solid selection of craft beers, both local and otherwise. Add in the very tempting assortment of wines, cheeses, and other nibbles... Seriously, you could quickly make your own delicious picnic by stopping here or just grab some lovely classier souvenirs. Final highlight was that I was struggling a bit to separate a larger can from one of those PakTech reusable plastic six pack carriers as I amassed my custom hoard (admittedly bought 2 mixed six packs...) and the gent up front came over and immediately offered to give me a hand - which was much appreciated. Was that a tad under $16? For a mixed six pack? Is it opposite day and you actually add a 20% surcharge for mixing a six pack instead of the discount that most liquor stores offer? If you're not familiar with Salem or not in town to spend the day sightseeing, browsing & shopping, Pamplemousse may be a bit off the beaten path for you, but if you park at Museum Place and walk over, you will be SO glad you did. As Chris M. said - this place is truly one stop shopping. The gracious and cheerful staff will gladly work within your budget to put together the best gifts around. Of course, they will also be lovingly wrapped up and displayed. I have bought numerous hostess gifts here and they receive RAVE reviews. One slightly irritating experience I did have here was putting together a hostess gift for Thanksgiving at my godmother's in 2006. After helping me select wine, dipping mustards, pretzels, and flatbread crisps, the saleswoman placed my items into a great basket, arranged them nicely, wrapped them and topped the whole shebang with a bow - and DID NOT take off the price tags / stickers off of any of the items I purchased! Unfortunately I didn't realize this until my godmother began taking items out of the basket. Not a huge crisis, but I would have preferred the tags removed. So go, have fun, shop, and let them pack for you - but watch out for lingering price tags! read more

Awesome little store. Well, not too little. They have a great assortment of both local items and kitchen-y stuff (I picked up a great set of coasters featuring maps of the local Cap Ann harbors). A lot of the kinds of things that you cannot find without going out to the Internet. Great place to find gifts for the foodie in your life, or for yourself! They also feature a selection of wines, as well as spreads, spices, and just various and sundry random kitchen-y gadgets. The store is well lit, clean, and well organized. This is such a fun store. As a foodie, I make a point to come in when I'm in Salem. This place has everything -- local goods, kitchen gadgets, gifts, fun foods, specialty ingredients, and beer/wine. Favorite store around! GREAT little kitchen store with a bit of English flair to it. Very well-designed store - the flow as you walk in and around picking stuff up as you end up back up at the register is flawless. Awesome. I love it love it love it! Pamplemousse saved me this past Christmas when having to buy my brother in law beer. My sister suggested speciality beers, but I had no clue what to get or where to go. After purchasing some yummy wine before at Pamplemousse I decided to wander in and noticed they had quite the speciality beer selection. Still lost at this point... I asked the nice lady behind the desk for help. She suggested a beer basket! It was the best idea and was a huge hit. This is a foodies dream. This is my dream! Endless kitchen accessories, pots, pans, wine, and food mixes. The aprons in the window brought me in but the large rack of cookie cutters had me hooked. I restrained myself from getting out of countrol which would have been fairly easy since they were just a couple of dollars each. It's totally fitting to get a witch hat cookie cutter while in Salem. I think that the food mixes they had were very extensive, however they were not too different than if you went into William Sonoma and got a bread mix. In addition to the food mixes and spices they sold beer and wine. The location of the store is right along a nice pedestrian car-free area. You can hop from store to store in this area. I love the stuff that this place sells- but I do think that the wine selection could be better. After reading that the guy who owns Salem Wine Imports worked with the people who own this store, I went in there expecting the staff to be really knowledgeable about wine. I tried to have a conversation with the person working about their wine selection and I was disappointed- not even if she had tried half of the wines there. However, that being said- they have some GREAT unique gifts there, and I would go there for things other than wine. read more

Picture it. Salem. The last weekend shopping day before Christmas. I settle down to begin my Black Pepper & Pecan Brittle for holiday office treats when I discover that my candy thermometer is 10 degrees off. Panic sets in. Having made the drive to the Liberty Tree Mall to buy the cookie tins at Michael's the day before, I am well aware that the drive and traffic might just kill me if I have to make it again. As a man, you take one look at the outside of this store and you become upset. Yep, your girlfriend/wife is dragging you into another chick store full of kitchen utensils, fancy jams and potpourri that'll make you nauseous. Trust me gentlemen, this store is not a chick store. They may have kitchen utensils and fancy jams but they are all things that you wouldn't mind trying or you can picture using. I walk around this store and go "Sweet! I could use this when I make my famous steak!" (I dont have a famous steak, I'm just sayin') Not only that, they have a great wine section and a cooler of craft beer with mix 6-packs! How can you go wrong! The staff is always friendly and willing to help you if you are looking for anything in particular. I paid Pamplemousse a visit the other day and I was quite impressed. The store has been beautifully renovated and the store is fully stocked with great wines, terrific imported beers, the usual kitchen goods/gifts, and even foreign chocolates, not available anywhere else in the area. The prices were very fair, and a little money can go a very long way in Pamplemousse. The owner was unbelievably kind & cute. Very helpful, as were the rest of the staff. They often have wine tasting and are very generous with the samples. I went to a beer tasting one night, which must be a rare occurrence and the place was totally packed. Lots of great stuff for the kitchen including corkscrews, dish towels, jams and preserves, serving utensils, etc. They also had some snack items including potato chips, rice crisps, and crackers. Lots of wine and beer as well. The store is set up nicely and was clean and pleasant to browse. However, the prices are a bit off putting. $8 for a box of crackers? Also, where is the cheese? Heyo! Love this place, i found the best perfume from this store. I spayed it on to test it, then two separate ladies followed me around the store going 'something smells really good!". So of course, I had to buy it. y the way, it was the Rose perfume by Tymes. Lots of really cute and neat kitchen and home gadgets. This store is going through a complete re-organizing inside, with more of a focus on the wines, beers and kitchen items. Still a great selection of unique gifts, and the owner is totally awesome and nice about explaining anything in the store or the surrounding area. They also serve singles of the most bizarre beers, so there's no excuse to not try something new. Create your own six-pack of these unique microbrews for well under $10 and become a beer conoisseur (sp?). Most wines are $10-$20. Good variety for all palates. The decor and design of the store is enough of a reason to visit; the product selection is enoough to leep you coming back. read more

I love going into Pamplemousse b/c everything I get there makes me happy or makes the person that I bought the gift for happy. Diane and her staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful on all things related to the kitchen, decor (indoor, outdoor), wine, specialty beers, and jewelry. And as far as the jewelry goes, I have seen firsthand the support they give to local jewelers. And more importantly this store has really become a vital part of the Salem business community by creating opportunities (e.g. festivals) for other local businesses to sell their wares. then there are the wine classes... It was through one of their awesome wine classes that I discovered my favorite white wine ever- Can Feixes. Good luck getting some though, I usually clean them out of it ; ) As for the reds- the Banfi and Zen of Zin hit the spot. And again, would never have known about these wines if it wasn't for this place. And I got to meet some nice locals that I otherwise would not have met, so that's always a plus! I love this little grapefruit of a shop! I always find something that I simply must have but didn't actually know that I needed. One of my favorite features is the build your own six-pack of beers - they have some fun & unusual brews and I can never decide on just one anyway. It is also a great place to go if you are gift shopping for a homemaker, chef or gourmand. Lots of fun gadgets, and food related goodies.
