If you can take a joke and give it back a bit they will leave you be. That being said I spent three nights in Boston and will be coming back to Boston to come to this bar. It is what southie used to be, like stepping back in time the ultimate dive bar. The bartender Danny is good craic friendly (eventually) and cares about his job. Boy do miss this place! Top 5 pub in Boston. It's a proper dive. Hardly a sign in sight. Bring your own grub if you must. Light, airy, comfortable, and clean. Gritty but not depressing. This place holds a special spot in my heart, and I desperately miss it. If you're looking for a bar with a rich history and unforgettable people, Whitey's is it. It's a Southie institution in the truest sense of the word. I don't know your crowd, but I could always count on an adventure. On multiple occasions, bringing non-Southie friends here ended with us LITERALLY riding to the hospital in the back of an ambulance or being escorted elsewhere by the BPD. It was wild, unpredictable, and absolutely fantastic. One night, a guy showed me pictures on his phone of Uday Hussein's palace, taken by his brother who served in the army--he himself would've served too, but he was doing time for a 'misunderstanding.' Another time, while I was in the bathroom, a patron paid me the best compliment ever by telling my wife, "You better bang him tonight, he's a cool guy!" That's the kind of place Whitey's is--it's raw, real, and full of characters Hollywood can't make up. It's literally everything that the best damned neighborhood in America is supposed to be. It's gritty, it's fascinating, and it's straight up legit. Whitey's isn't for the faint of heart, but if you can handle it, it's a place you'll never forget. I miss it because it's authentic, non-bougie Southie--it's not vineyard vines and million-dollar condos, it's unpredictable nights and incredible stories. Southie dive bar. I wonder if this place is named after the famous Boston mobster Whitey Bulger? This is the kind of bar that you see in the Boston-Irish ruffian movies! It's only cash here, but you don't need to bring much- this place is super cheap. Beers for less than a couple of bucks. This place is a bit of a rough bar- it was all guys when I went, a bunch of them looked like mobsters, thugs, or someone who will break your thumbs if you try to raise a fuss here. If you don't like something around here, it seems that you can just scribble it on the walls- graffiti seems to be encouraged, which is an interesting interior design motif. Many of the things written on the wall are a bit risque, so try not to get offended. There's a few pool tables, and a guy who seemed to be hustling everyone for money while running the table and taking advantage of the lean of the table to perform seemingly impossible shots, while raking in the bucks. There's plenty of televisions here to watch the game, and the beer is so cheap, it's hard to pass this place up, if you don't mind going for a bit of a dive. read more

A true dive bar! There's no signs for this place and everywhere and anything inside feels like it needs a good cleaning. Where's my antibacterial wipe?! I see a lot of 5-star reviews, which I can understand for their amazing price! You really get the value for this place, but would you really come here just for their cheap strong drinks? Yes? No? It really depends on your style. Unfortunately, Whitey's was not for me. The mixed drink is about a pint with 70% alcohol and 30% mix that comes out to about $5-6. The beer is dirt cheap, under $2. There is three bathrooms available here where you'll be lucky if the toilet flushes. There is also two pool tables at Whitey's that's in decent shape for you to entertain yourself. Whitey's was definitely the place to be on Saturday. Being greeted by a dozen regulars at Whitey's after a 2 block 3-legged race was the sweetest thing ever. They were cheering for us telling us how awesome we did for coming in last place! Haha. One regular sitting at the bar was truly deeply excited for us, I just remember her telling us all that matters is we made it and we did great. How friggin cute?!! Is this an over the top dive bar? My girlfriend and I decided to try this place after we had dinner last night, thinking it would be like the Tam (which we both adore). Instead we felt like we'd just walked into the Southie version of DELIVERANCE. The place was packed with sketchy white dudes (my girlfriend was one of only two women there) eying us like we'd just pooped on the floor. We decided to give the place a chance anyway, so I went to the ATM to get cash for drinks. The machine was so obviously rigged with a scanner it was almost laughable. I love Whitey's SFM. Why? Because I showed up wasted at 1pm on a Saturday and no one cared. I also was tied to Krys and everyone cheered for us even though we are the worst 3 legged racers ever, we could have literally crawled there and gotten there faster. I think they may have even believed we won?? There is a bottle of baby powder that says "not for your ass" next to the pool table, but i put it on my ass and no one said anything! Sprawling out on the pool table? No problem. The regulars were amazing, but the older woman who was all bejeweled and bedazzled in a beret and copious makeup wins. I want her to be my best friend. It can be just like Sex in the City and I will be Carrie and she will be Samantha!!! And one of the older men without a full set of teeth at the bar will be Mr Big. And we'll do it on the pool table. I had a great time at this place, but it comes with a bit of a warning. If I, completely on my own, had walked into this place by myself, I probably would have tried to find a subtle way to walk right back out again, because I would have thought I didn't belong. And honestly, I don't. But that doesn't mean anyone in there would have cared. We came here as part of the Red Scare South Boston bar crawl, and I'm so glad we did. Walking into this dark room on a Saturday afternoon, I saw a few gruff locals, one even gruffer (is gruffer a word? It is now) bartender, Apollo 13 on the TV, and graffiti everywhere. Graffiti is just part of the decor. There's a painting here that's essentially the John Wayne equivalent of a Three Wolf Moon shirt, and a witch marionette thing with a broken nose in the window. The bathrooms are broken in a myriad of fascinating and creative ways. If a Hollywood set designer were creating a bar for a late 90's Sean Astin to walk into wearing a cardigan, it would look just like Whitey's, just with a record player so the needle could scratch off the record when he walked in. And much like its Encino Man equivalent, the most frightening patrons of this bar turned out to be the most welcoming. Everyone here was really awesome, and you will likely never get more alcohol per dollar at a bar than you do here. I ordered a rum and coke here, and it cost $6, came in a pint glass with about two ice cubes, and it had so much rum in it, it was yellow. The only problem with this drink is that it was so strong it was hard to drink. I considered getting a second glass just full of coke so I could sort of make two still pretty strong drinks instead of one insanely strong drink, but I thought the locals would look at me funny. Later, one of the bartenders told me he recommends doing exactly that, because their drinks are so strong. So I guess they wouldn't have made fun of me. So if you're in Southie, looking for a VERY local place to get a drink, stop in, say hi to some of the regulars, get yourself a cheap cocktail and a 2nd glass of mixer, play some pool, and just have a good time. I was fooled by the stellar Yelp reviews this place had, and it nearly resulted in a fight. Let me make sure you ALL know what you are getting into when you go here.. A bar with about 10 chairs/stools combined, a pool table and a juke box. Plus lots of writing on the wall. No clue about the bathrooms, but I would suggest squatting to the ladies. I love dive bars. I like 4 oz pours and cheap drinks. Whitey's offers both. What I don't like is feeling like an alien when I walk in, and having a drunk older gentleman kiss my hand 15 times and not leave me alone. This IS my favorite dive bar. Doesn't get to crowded and is generally chill, plus the owner is cool and keeps control generally. It's hard to find cheaper beer or mixed drinks even in South Boston. The bartenders are generous with the pour so tip well and they will make sure you will want to come back. Free pool is a huge plus and the Jukebox blasting Bananaphone is always good for a laugh. If you can fit in with the old school OFS crowd you'll have a good time here. Let's talk about Whitey's. It is my favorite bar in town. The drinks are dirt cheap and very strong. The juke is usually pumping out either 1. old school irish tunes 2. "i love this bar" by toby keith, 3. "come on eileen" by dexys midnight runners or 4. "i want to sex you up" by color me badd. Well, usually not #4, that was just the case last night. The Guiness is $3. The mixed drinks are no more than $4 and worth every penny. Just watch the bartenders make your drink. You're basically drinking alcohol with a splash of a mixer. (Gin and tonic, hold the tonic...basically). Now for the bartenders...best in the city. Danny is probably one of my favorite people on earth and greets me with a big hug everytime I come in. Danny's brother Declan works there too. (He even had limes for me last weekend!) Then there's Gerry who I can't really understand because of his Dulin accent but is hilarious nonetheless...and quite the dancer. Warning: Whitey's is a real dive bar (complete with eccentric locals and regulars) but you should give it a shot. Even if you don't like it the first time, you should give it another try. It takes a little time to get used to this place. Also...Whitey's is open to 2am and gets pretty packed around 12:30 when the other southie bars are at last call. Who gives 5 stars to a dive bar in Southie? This Irish bar is perfect. First off, I landed a parking spot in front and saw many spots in the vicinity. There is no name on the bar but the number is prominent as is the green facade. Inside a cast of characters enhance the experience. Everyone was warm and friendly despite the fact we were newbies. Cheap draught Guinness carefully poured by lovely Gerry. Free pool and bathrooms with toilet paper for the girls (important stuff not always present in a dive). This was a date with an amazing guy and man, I loved it. Ya, I picked it too Memories are made in different ways and for me, this date will be ingrained in my mind for years to come. This place is nowhere as sketchy looking as people make it out to be...that or I am just used to sketchy from traveling all over and seeing my fair share of dive-y establishments. The pints of Guinness really are superb though i definitely get the feeling the price you pay (I paid $3 per) depends on who you are/who is serving. PBR pints for $1.50 are really the only way I can justify drinking said beverage. A guy I met from Iceland got beaten at pool super quickly by the locals so I had no inclination to step up to that challenge. Some of the players even had the billards gloves haha. It started filling up quite a bit once it got to be about midnight but before that people were enjoying their early Saturday night somewhere else. All in all a good place to go with some friends if you want to swill some cheap domestic drafts (or a Guinness) with some charming and entertaining regulars. read more

This is my favorite bar in America. Moving from Ireland to Boston in 2008, Whitey's was one of the first bars I ventured into when I turned 21, and was an instant favorite. The staff and the locals are all wild characters, you'll get hustled in pool and get nice and drunk on super cheap drinks. The Christmas lights in the corner are up all year, and everyone seems to know everyone in there. Danny Kelly, the boss, is an absolute legend and a gent. I was even involved in shooting a short movie there over a weekend in Dec 2009, which, needless to say, was a riot. I recommend this bar to every person I know travelling to Boston, telling them it's my favorite bar in the country, and I've lived in 4 states, and visited 26, so you know I've done some research! read more
