We had the absolute best time at Crocodile Encounters and honestly, we haven't stopped talking about it since! We arrived a little early to wander around before the 2pm guided tour, and I'm so glad we did -- it gave us extra time to soak everything in. The guided tour itself was phenomenal. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, answering every question thrown at them with enthusiasm, and they were so warm and great with the kids in our group. You could tell they are truly passionate about what they do, and it made the whole experience that much more memorable. My son about 5 minutes into the tour said he wanted to work there when he grew up. Don't sleep on the gift shop either! For a smaller store, it was seriously impressive -- packed with Wild Republic plushies in every variety, alligator trinkets, shirts, and so much more. Let's just say we didn't leave empty-handed! What also makes this place extra special is the heart behind it. Owner/Operator Chris is deeply involved in the local community, regularly donating to schools and welcoming student field trips. We are visiting out of state and this stop was a planned visit on our trip! It did not disappoint. We did the VIP tour with the feeding and our 10 year old daughter loved it. We saw a lot of crocs and gators which was awesome. We started out with Reagan as our tour guide and then got Mason. Both girls were great! My daughter also loved the baby goats they had that we stopped and saw after. I would say our only complaint was they did not feed the gators very much on their end to show us and they mentioned that they had had a busy day with field trips and were low on chicken. I feel like that could have been better planned so that we got the full experience regardless if there were other tours. We did the self guided tour & purchased a bucket of feed for $50. It was so much fun, and we can't wait to go back! Next time we'll try a guided tour. The bathrooms are outside before you get to the main entrance. They have a gift shop with a bunch of options. There is plenty of outdoor seating to have a snack or lunch. The place is huge so there is lots of walking and lots to see! I'm not sure if strollers are allowed but I'm thinking next time we may take a compact one, because the fencing in some areas can easily be climbed and escaped through if you have a crazy toddler like I do. read more

So this is out in the country and we had no idea this place existed until I looked for things to do on Groupon. We showed up down a long country road into a dirt parking lot and honestly this place was really cool. The gators and crocodiles were really close. We opted not to feed the animals but they hear you coming and they come to where you are from the crocodiles to the emus and even the tortoises. The Nigerian pigmy goats were crazy and trying to get food non stop even though we clearly didn't have any. We followed the map and got to see some pretty cool animals very closely. We didn't do any of the shows but those are supposed to be pretty spectacular. It was slightly hot but there was some shade and a breeze which was nice. I wish the gift shop sold cold beverages. I used to think of Louisiana and Florida when I heard about people feeding alligators and crocodiles, but when I was looking for something different for my child's birthday party, I discovered that you could see crocodilians being hand-fed up close in Texas too at Crocodile Encounters ("CE")! CE is an easy 40 minute drive from the center of Houston. We ended up having our birthday party there, and it was a lot of fun for everyone. CE will give you a tour, tell you about the different types of animals, and give you some food to feed the animals too. It is outside so you can accommodate a decent crowd and the kids can be loud and rambunctious. CE has all sorts of crocodilians; the ones I can remember are the American Alligator, Saltwater Crocodiles, Cuban Crocodiles, and Chinese Alligators. They have some biggie adults and some babies in a nursery. They have some other animals too, like goats that you can feed, and some exotic game running around in the back. But they are a working zoo, and animals rotate in and out. After taking a tour, they have a pavilion where you can have some food, drink, and a birthday cake. In sum, this is so much more interesting and more of an educational experience than yet another "bouncy castle" birthday. This used to be such an awesome experience for us & worth the drive. We have had a total of three birthday parties here. The first two parties were so amazing that we came back for a third party but this last time was rather disappointing. The kids got to touch & feed a variety of animals during the first two parties such as the large tortoises & pot belly pigs but we didn't even see those species at all this time around. We did see the smaller tortoises by the party pavilion but we didn't get to feed them. Sadly my fav animals (the kangaroos) are no longer there. We didn't see Blanco either. A long time ago the facility had lemurs, elands & bongos but those animals are no longer there either. Website mentioned bison & antelope but we didn't see those animals either. We only saw boxes turtles, goats, alligators, crocodiles & deer during our guided tour. I had reached out prior to our party to inquire about the show & tell section of the party & was told by the owner that the birthday kid could definitely see & touch a black skink, snake & of course the baby alligator. I had no reason to think the venue wouldn't follow through with this so I relayed the info to the birthday girl but I regret mentioning it to her because the show & tell only consisted of a corn snake & a baby alligator. The kids got to see more than two animals during the previous show & tell sessions of our first two parties so this last party was a let down. Needless to say, the birthday honoree was disappointed she didn't get to touch & hold a skink like the owner had said in his email. Birthday girl also said she didn't get to do anything special as the guest of honor. In the past, the tour guide would call her to the front & allow her to drop a piece of chicken from the grabber tool into the swamp. This last guide didn't treat the birthday girl any different from the rest of the group & she didn't get to feed any raw chicken to the alligators or crocodiles. If you haven't been then I would recommend making the drive just once. My family of seven were down in the area for vacation and we spontaneously decided to check this place out. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We were able to do the guided tour and the young guide was professional, knowledgeable and entertaining. We were additionally impressed with the quality of animals Crocodile Encounter cared for. We visited a few weeks ago, on a Wednesday. I wanted to do this activity, as it is all outdoors, before the summer heat set in. I am divided as to whether the overall rating should be a 3 or a 4. It wasn't as good of an "experience" as other "4" attractions, but was better than "average" (3) and I know that reviews are important and respect small business owners/conservationists, so rounded up. Here are my overall pros: 1.) Boardwalk and fencing was well constructed and appeared well maintained. I felt safe for myself and my children, and it was easy to walk along the paths. 2.) The animals appear to be in good condition. 3.) Staff appear to be enthusiastic, passionate, and well informed. 4.) Small giftshop, but items seemed well priced 5.) Opportunity to buy animal feed and feed the goats and separate food for the crocodiles, both experiences were nice and fun 6.) You get to see Blanco, the leucistic gator from the Houston Zoo! 7.) Photos with the baby gator are cute keepsakes Cons/Areas of improvement: 1.) Tour was unnecessarily long/delayed by the fact that we had four different tour guides, which required waiting on benches or standing waiting in three different areas for the "next" tour guide. Online, it says it is an hour. Ours lasted closer to 2, but at least 45 minutes of that was waiting. Each of our four tour guides started by apologizing for "running late with the last group" and making us wait. 2.) Four different tour guides. That seems prone to a logistical nightmare and efficiency problems. Also, if there MUST be four different ones on each tour, please go over who describes what content. Certain bits of information were repeated by all four. If I hear one more time that the snouts are shaped different (U vs. V) for alligators vs. Crocs or that Nile Crocodiles eat the most people per year but only because they are in close proximity to people etc I might scream. Again, four guides and a longer than needed tour due to repeating information and waiting. 3.) Open containers of animal food provided at the beginning of the tour, but the petting zoo/goats were the last stop. So we parents had to hold multiple open containers of food in our hands for the two hours of walking around lest our children spill them. Parents, the website states to buy food for each person, I would amend that to only buy the number of adult hands you have at your disposal, as single parents trying to juggle three containers of open food for 2 hours while keeping kiddos hands outside of crocodile enclosures is not a pretty sight. Multiple spilled, multiple exasperated moms. Crocodile food is given in small baggies that close and can be stowed in a bag. I would suggest ALL animal food be provided in these baggies, or the petting zoo be the first stop on the tour, not the last. 4.) Consider asking tour guides to be proactive in ensuring children get to the front at least some of the time. We were in a group with several large adult groups who crowded to the front of every enclosure and my kids never saw anything, until it was time to move on and they would get a quick glimpse. Tour guides never said "hey, let's let the kids come up front" or "let's take a minute to rotate before moving on". Of course, having four guides maybe it's less obvious that this is happening with the same folks up front at every stop. All this being said, when I asked my kids what they thought they both said it was a great time. I would recommend going. We learned something, and supported the animal conservation, both good goals. read more

We enjoyed our tour here. It is a walking tour along a boardwalk. The tour for us lasted 1 hour 45 min -- and there's almost no shade, so be aware of the sun/heat. Some of the little kids in the tour got very whiny in the second half of the tour because of the summer heat. (We did a 10am tour in July) So it would be a great idea to come when it's cooler -- but if coming in the summer, be sure to bring a water bottle and SPF/sun protection. mosquito repellent is optional as there didn't seem to be many mosquitoes, surprisingly. The confirmation email also mentioned there isn't much of a mosquito problem but they still said if you're very sensitive to bites then bring repellent. We didn't get bitten. read more

This was so cool!!!! We took the guided group tour at 10am-- in July. So... The only downside was that it was hot & everyone got sweat stains. 1 hr 45 min out in the heat (the tour can range from 1 hr 15 min up to 2 hours). So the only people I wouldn't recommend this tour for in the summer would be people who get whiny in the heat (for example-- some little kids). Otherwise it was great fun! They said there aren't many mosquitoes but we sprayed repellent just in case. None of us got bitten. But it's a good idea to bring a bottle of cold water, and SPF/sun protection is recommended because 95% of the tour is in the sun. We got to see and learn about a lot of different species of crocodiles, alligators, and other animals (turtles, tortoises, kangaroos, ring-tailed lemurs, pigs, goats). You can also pay extra to get pellets to feed the alligators and crocodiles, or a cup of carrots and celery to feed some of the other animals. read more

I heard about Crocodile Encounter via a mom blog and have had this place bookmarked for months. Finally made it out here and had a really great visit! I went online and booked a guided tour beforehand and it was super easy to get checked in when we arrived. If you're planning a trip here, I highly recommend the guided tour. I can't remember the name of our guide but it is his sixth year giving tours there and he was absolutely hilarious. Bags of carrots and alligator pellets are available for purchase at the gift shop ($5 apiece). Apparently you can also bring your own lettuce to feed the tortoises if you want as well. The guided tour is awesome because you get to see them feed the gators and crocs. I have no words to describe this experience except it is AMAZING. Seeing these animals in real life is truly a sight to behold. If you have small children, hold them tight!! There are fences and gates but little fingers can slip through and get chomped off easily if you are not monitoring your kids. Personally, my toddler enjoyed the tour but it was a bit long for her. Her attention was fading by the 1 hour mark. We saw lots of interesting animals on our visit, including: a possum, lemurs, pot bellied pigs, antelope, red kangaroos, goats, crocodiles, alligators, and a snake. At the end of the tour, you have the opportunity to touch/hold a few small animals. This facility is a hidden gem and I highly recommend it if you are wanting to get an up close look at these incredible reptiles. read more

What an adventure! Decided to take our baby to Crocodile Encounter for her Spring Break. Unfortunately we were unable to make our scheduled tour time of 12 noon. We called and spoke with a gentleman named Chris who immediately rescheduled us for the later time (2pm) so our daughter could see their crocodiles. We arrived at our new time and began our tour. We were shown many alligators and several species of crocodiles along with many fun animals from tortoises to baby goats, to lemurs. We were guided through each different section by a different tour guide who were all very knowledgeable and courteous. What we enjoyed most was feeding the baby goats and holding a baby alligator. At end of our tour as we were leaving, a man came up to us and asked us how we enjoyed our tour -which we raved how much fun we had. I later found out the man's name was Chris who was also the owner. Why is this place such a secret? Everyone should visit. This place is amazing! I'm always trying to find fun, educational, AFFORDABLE, kid-friendly, and grandparent-friendly things to do. If you love animals and the outdoors, you will LOVE this place. I booked a private tour a few weeks ago for a group of homeschoolers (K-7th grade). It cost us $20/adult and $10/kid for the private tour. You can do your own thing for cheaper, but if you can, I would recommend the private tour. The place is rugged, but in a good way. No, not rustic, like in magazines rustic. It is rugged. You enter the gift shop which is a little too dark and a little too dusty (cob-webs in the corner). But you know what? It fit in with the authenticity of it all. They are about the animals and not about the bright, shiny things. You can buy food here to feed the animals. Our guide gave us extra food too! She was so nice! Our guide was so knowledgeable! She took the time to answer all of our questions. She knew each animal by name. Each animal has his/her distinct behavior. She took the time to explain the behavior and environment. She told us about the history of the place, how far it has come, as well as the new developments, and future developments. The tour was about an hour long. It was nice to visit on a weekday since we were the only ones here. It's a shame that covid has stopped the field trip kids from visiting. Please visit if you can and support them. You walk the entire 1 hour tour. Its not very stroller friendly. I can see if you have a small umbrella stroller, you can probably maneuver it around and over the uneven planks of wood. There's no way you can get a wheelchair through. I don't remember seeing any sitting areas or benches (except the pavilion area) along the tour route. We were all fine walking, but I wanted to include this for people who have small children or can't walk or stand for a hour. There is a large open area where you can pet tortoises and feed goats, lemurs, and pigs. This was so much fun for the kids. You're free to roam the tortoise area and pet the magnificent creatures. They are used to humans so they will come over and take carrots from your hand. At the end of the tour our guide let us pet a milk snake and a baby crocodile. It was such a good experience. Some of the kids in our group said that they definitely would like to volunteer and work here in the future. There is a pavilion area and I did see a concession stand where you can purchase food. They were not open when I was there so I don't know about the quality or price. They have bathroom facilities, but I did not use them so I can't comment on this. They also will do birthday parties. I'm looking at having them come out to our house to do this. I will update the review if this does happen. Bottom line: Go visit! We got more out of our visit here than going to the zoo. I'm not knocking the zoo, but the zoo is an all-day commitment. This place took us 1 hour to get to, we spent about 2 hours here. Its a good half day trip for families. read more

Super cool! I was looking for something that would entertain my teenage son and this place kept him entertained! He actually put down his phone. It's about 35 minutes south of Houston. Inexpensive. General rate to get in I believe was $16. Pay the extra $5 for the guided tour! We were late so missed the guided tour but still got to see some cool feedings with the group and another feeding away from the group. Parking is free. Bathrooms are located outside the entrance. You can purchase crocodile feed and carrots for the goats and turtles/tortoise . Their are so many type of crocodiles and alligators. You can safely see them up close. If you own a camera, BRING IT! You can feed the goats and pet them. The turtles and tortoises are also available for petting. They have kangaroos as well. I would definitely bring water and bug repellent. They offer drinks and lunch but you can easily bring your own. I saw another review mention there weren't any picnic tables. I believe we saw three different shaded areas with picnic tables. We're frequently in Houston, but had never known to visit Crocodile Encounter! I'm so glad I came across this on the internet, because it was great! It's about 30 minutes from Houston, and worthy the drive. Check online to see when they do feeding tours. We went Monday at 10am for the feeding tour. You can walk on your own without a guide, too, but the experience is significantly enhanced with a guide - so much so that I'd say don't go unless you can go on tour! Tickets cost the same whether on tour or self-guided. You can purchase pellets to feed the alligators and celery to feed the tortoises. You can also bring lettuce or celery from home to feed the tortoises and save some $$ :). Note that while not posted, there is a discount for seniors, so ask if there are seniors in your party. The tour starts with feeding the turtles and tortoises. Then it's off to the alligators, followed by crocodiles. The guides feed them chicken and it's very cool seeing the gators jump up for their food. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. All in all, we had a good time here. We made it one day before field trip season began, which was great as we were the only people there until later on in the day. Further into the afternoon a couple of families showed up. Our tour guide, Carly, was very informative as our kids had quite a few questions to ask. At the beginning of our tour, we were able to feed the tortoises with leaves. After, we watched Carly feed the crocodiles raw chicken. From there, we proceeded throughout their establishment to view various other crocodiles in their habitats. We also saw their other animals, too - goats, kangaroos, and pigs. Some of the animals weren't too interactive from it still being a tad chilly out. They have a covered eating area with picnic tables where we ended up eating our lunches. What appeared to be a mini restaurant was on site as well, but was closed whenever we were there. Their menu stated they offer hot dogs and snow cones among a small assortment of other items. One concerning item was that they had no electricity nor water, which meant we had to use the restroom in the dark and without washing our hands. Super fun family activity! About a 35 minute drive from Sugar Land. We went on a guided tour and it was a perfect amount of time... about 1 hour and 20 minutes. We got to feed alligators, pet turtles, goats, and see kangaroos and lemurs up close. Our 2 year old loved the experience and has been asking about this place nonstop since we left. Highly recommend going on the tour since it makes it more fun as a group and more interactive and is the same price as if you just self-explored. They give you plenty of time to explore after your tour as well. Next time though, I'd skip on buying the alligator pellets and just buy the carrots. My kids (who mistook a cow for a horse, earlier that day ‍ definitely not my proudest moment!) had an amazing time. They were excited to see all of the animals, pet some & even fed alligators these little pellets. They have a little gift/souvenir shop, with plushies & shirts; which were amazingly NOT overpriced. Make sure to buy your lettuce to feed the giant tortoises, it's amazing to see how fast they come up to you to get the lettuce. The tour guides who were feeding the alligators and crocodiles were very knowledgable and showed how much they love what they're doing. You get very close to the alligators and crocodiles, I mean there is a fence but you are close to the fence and they come very close to the other side of the fence. The tour was a full 1 1/2 hours.
