I read online that the best time to visit is around dusk or dawn, but we only managed to make it around 2pm, so we decided to head on to Galveston and come back around dusk. It's quite remote so be sure to fuel up (nearest gas station is around 20 miles away). Around 2pm we drove thru the gate and after driving about 3 miles we encountered the discovery center. We got out and walked around. There is a paved hiking path around the discovery center which takes you through some of the freshwater marshland and a "songbird hike". The paved path disappears after a few hundred feet and you are left to bushwhack through the remainder of the hiking path. Because of the heat (most of this area is in direct sun) and aggressive mosquitos we turned around after the paved area and went back to the car. However, the calls of many songbirds were audible. From this point you can keep driving and go on the auto tour, pay attention to the signage which directs you into the 7mile auto tour loop. You can pull off at any time on the auto tour to get out and enjoy the view! Because the road here is not paved, I don't recommend driving faster than 10 mph as that kicks up a lot of dust which gets all over your car. At the end of the tour, you can check out "Roger's pond" which is a brackish pond. The highlight of the tour is the salt marshes which you can see around the first couple miles of the loop. After Roger's pond, you have to turn around, then you can take the refuge exit paths to leave the refuge. The gates to the refuge close at dusk and open at dawn-- we cut it close on our return trip and left around 7:30, but we were still able to escape successfully. We saw a lot more wildlife in the salt marshes upon our return, including lots of roseate spoonbills and egrets. However there were a lot of mosquitos at dusk so definitely wear long pants and long sleeves to avoid being eaten up!

There was a little guy under the boardwalk right next to the parking and picnic area and lots of large gators on the driving tour. The sand is a little rocky and rigid. A seashell broke off in my foot which hurt. They have food that is delivered to you with a $10 min. We will just be getting drinks from now on. The food was not good and below concession stand type. But they have bag chips and lots of drinks! Which our son liked. Plenty of parking, but once again it's not officially summer yet. We will go back!

My hotel was right across the street from the beach. It took just a couple minutes to walk from the Seawall to the actual ocean. When I say that we were the only ones there, I absolutely mean it. I think it was the best experience I've ever had coming to Galveston. No loud music, no loud families just calm and quiet. The only people that were around were fishing on the jetty. I was able to catch some rays, play in the sand, dip in the water, and walk the beach without a living soul to bother me. Ha! I am not sure what it's like in the summer, but if you have a chance to go to this end of the beach during the off-season, it is absolutely heaven!! Heads up - no restrooms....at least during the off season. Not sure about the rest.

Whether you want to go fishing or just go up to the top deck and have a cold beer this pier is the ticket. It has been beat up pretty bad over the years by the hurricanes and most of the peers in Galveston have long been washed away. This one is hanging on by a thread. The top deck is $2 per person. They have a nice bar with great view of the Galveston Island and the Gulf.

My girlfriend, her son, and I have visited your pier every year for the past four years. During each trip, we spend eight or more hours a day fishing. We have always had positive experiences with Mike and the other staff members, which is why we continue to return, spend money at the pier, and recommend it to others. On the evening of 06/13/2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m., my girlfriend and I went inside to order a pizza before heading to the beach. After placing our order, we were instructed to wait upstairs. As we were preparing to sit down, a man immediately approached us regarding my backpack cooler. I had just removed the cooler from my back when he informed me it was not allowed. We explained that we were unaware of the policy and had only come upstairs because we had been directed to wait there for our food. He did not identify himself or explain his role. He stated that if there was no alcohol in the cooler, it would be fine. Wanting to be honest, I informed him there was alcohol inside. At that point, he grabbed my bag and said he would hold it. I asked if I could retrieve my wallet first. After asking twice, I was told to stop being rude. I explained that I felt the way he had approached us was unnecessarily aggressive. My girlfriend attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the interaction continued to become more confrontational. We ultimately chose to return downstairs and wait for our food. A woman who identified herself as the General Manager then approached us and stated that we had been rude to the bartender. Rather than attempting to understand the situation or de-escalate it, she immediately became defensive and repeatedly threatened to make us leave. When I questioned whether she felt her approach to customers was appropriate, she continued to insist that we were at fault and needed to "learn how to read." My girlfriend made multiple attempts to calmly explain that this was simply a misunderstanding and that we had not intentionally violated any rules. Unfortunately, she was repeatedly interrupted, spoken over, and dismissed. Even after asking us to follow her outside to review the posted signage, the conversation remained condescending and unprofessional. I would like to add a young man and woman staffed within the store were both present during this. And immediately apologized for the interaction. To be clear, this complaint is not about the policy itself. I fully understand the importance of following alcohol regulations and protecting your business from potential licensing issues. Had the policy simply been explained to us respectfully, there would have been no issue. The problem was the manner in which we were treated. What should have been a simple conversation about a misunderstanding escalated into an unnecessarily hostile interaction. Rather than helping resolve the situation, both the bartender and General Manager appeared to escalate it further. As longtime patrons who have supported this business for years, we left feeling disrespected, belittled, and unwelcome. That was disappointing, especially given the positive experiences we have had at your establishment in the past. I would appreciate this matter being reviewed, as the behavior displayed by management on this occasion fell far below the level of professionalism I would expect from a business that values its customers.

The place was small, straight to the point and had pretty decent exhibits. Nothing that made you go "wow" though. The customer service was nice. Though the place needs to TLC, smells like mold and there were a lot of cracks in the walls and what seems to look like water damage on the inside. I don't think the place is worth the price either. The part I liked the most was water tunnel part and the diver who was giving education on the marine life around her. That was pretty dope! Overall, I wouldn't come back, but it's decent for young kids fasho!

I stomped through the deep boggy sand to find the trailhead and it was badly neglected. It's between East Beach and Big Reef. At this time it is totally impassable. Needs to be bushwhacked in order to connect to an awesome oyster shell trail that runs parallel to Boddeker Road. This area is best visited in cooler weather, followed by a dry period, during lowest tide. Otherwise infested with mosquitoes, to boggy, and flooded. Wear hiking boots and bring water shoes...also repellant.
