Tide was very high coming in, never seen the water so close to the cars. But I wouldn't dare drive a car on that sand. I see people get stuck all the time. It's regular parking at the entrance tho. I love how clean it is and they passed out trash bags to each car. New (not fun) fact... it's rattle snakes at surf side. read more

I much prefer Surfside beach to Galveston Beach. If you have dogs and you like to bring them with you to the beach, this beach is for you. This is very dog friendly and you can pull your car right up to the beach. You do have to keep your dogs on a leash as there are people circling to make sure that you do. I just bring a really long leash for them to be able to run around. My dogs like to run into the water so i have a long leash. Only downside is they don't have really plush sand. So if you go to the beach for the fluffy sand, this is not the place to go. But if you want no nonsense hassle or you don't have to carry all of your stuff miles to the beach just to find a good spot then you would like this beach. Note: there is free parking but we just ended up paying the $15 a day parking because we can pull right up on the beach. They do have an annual option to pay $30 for the whole year which I do think it's worth it if you go more than a couple times a year. read more

One of our favorite vacation destinations, non flight we drive to this location from Dallas Texas at lease a 5hr drive and we located a beyond beautiful beach location. This places has air bnbs & available hotels. The beach is car accessible and you are allowed to drive your vehicle on the sand which is super nice! Terrible! This place is mismanaged to say the least. The roads are mostly crap and The entire place smells of sewage. The water is not drinkable whatsoever. There are no rules here, they will rent to anybody doesn't matter if your on the run from the law it's come one come all. There is practically no police so it attracts what you would expect. Most of The locals seem angry at the world and most want out but can't sell their overpriced beach houses that are falling apart from rust. The beach it self has trash all over it most of the time and it attracts the lowest life of people. The drive on beach has fast and crazy unsafe driving right in front of children. Many party's have to be shut down by the police in other city's. Not a good place for family's ! Go to Galveston. read more

Let me start by saying, the water is clear!!!! You can see your feet, the shells, the sand, everything! It felt like we were at a beach in Florida! This beach is super chill and not crowded making it ideal for when me and my family want to spend a beach day as a getaway from city life! So relaxing!!! Excellent for fishing as well! There are plenty of beach bars and grills up and down the beach. They mostly have air bnbs which are excellent because when big hotel chains come into town, it means paid parking, private beaches ect so this place is so perfect! The food is amazing too!!! We love going to Surfside. While Galveston and its beaches offer a lot of food, nightlife, arts, culture, and other entertainment, our trips to Surfside offer more privacy and slightly better beach water (less sediment). The beaches are free, and you can park right on the beach; camping is permitted too. Earth Month PSA: CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. That means beer bottle caps, dog poo, firepits, limes, cigarette butts, broken tents... all of it. If you're going to go out and enjoy nature and public spaces, leave it the way you found it - or in even better condition. read more

Great beach for families! If you're coming from Houston, it's about the same distance to Galveston. Note that you do have to have a permit in order to enter/park which is $12 for the year/season. You can get this at any local convenience store. I believe it's cash only. Surfside is a lot cleaner. They have folks patrolling in their golf carts and offer trash bags if needed to help keep everything clean! There are honey buckets and trash bins around too. This beach isn't so rowdy, which is good for families. Really good sand on your feet along with the warm waters of the Gulf. read more

Great place to relax and enjoy the water! If you're visiting for the first time, here are some local tips: as soon as you drive over the bridge and see the beach there are 3 options of how to enjoy it. 1) If you turn right at the light intersection , this will take you to the "Pedestrian Beach" and the "Fishing Pier". Limited parking areas and rocks along the beach. 2) If you go straight across the light intersection you enter the " Public Beach". There is free parking on the street for those that don't want to drive their vehicles on the beach. You must have a "beach parking pass" to park on the water. Permits are sold as you drive in. This is where "out of town visitors" go. I recommend to skip going in this entrance to avoid the tourists. 3) If you turn left at the light intersection, they have several other "beach entrances" but keep going. You will pass Stahlman Park where you can park and walk to the beach if you don't want to drive on the beach. They have bathrooms picnic tables & playground. But if you keep driving on Bluewater Hwy past Stahlman Park about 2.9 miles down and turn right on Seagull you will enter the beach area that the locals use. Not as crowded as the first entrance and easier to get into. Stay off the sand dunes as they are protected and you will get fined. Plus there are snakes in them. There are some great restaurants to eat at, liquor store, and a couple of convenience stores in Surfside , but you may want to buy your groceries in town. Early mornings are best for seashell hunting. Beware of jellyfish in the water, use meat tenderizer on sting if you get one. Bring a trash bag for your trash and take it with you when you leave. read more

When it comes to Texas beaches...this one tops the list as one of my faves. I am a beach girl at heart though...all I need is sand between my toes, the sound of the ocean, and the breeze on my face. Instant serenity right there. I love driving down here because it is not too crazy far, it is a fairly clean beach, it is QUIET, and you can get some serious sun! I've done races here, I've come down here just for pleasure, and I've actually camped right on the beach. You can drive your car right on the sand, the sand is super packed and almost like the road. The sunrise/sunset views are absolutely stellar and there are also a few places to dine right on the Gulf watching the beachy skies. I really enjoyed myself the last time I was down here and I have a feeling I'll be making another trip very soon before it gets too crazy hot out. read more

Great beach! The driving distance is roughly the same miles to get from Houston to Galveston. I prefer this beach because it's it's much cleaner than most beaches in Houston and you can also park your car on the beach!! BE WARNED YOU HAVE TO PAY A $12 PERMIT FEE. They only accept cash, no credit or debit cards. Also for people who bring their kids both times we went I saw no lifeguard on duty so keep that in mind as well. We've been to this beach a bunch of times now... I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it yet. Our family loves coming to Surfside beach. The unique feature is that (for $12 season pass) you can DRIVE ON THE BEACH. Saves having to lug all your beach stuff/crap down to the beach from the parking lot/road. That being said, it also creates some issues... ONE: the beach traffic is actually only ONE WAY. Yet, many people either don't know or don't care. It can be dangerous to have oncoming traffic when there shouldn't be. There WILL be additional beach accesses down the beach so keep going in the RIGHT direction and you'll be able to exit the beach. TWO: Be courteous when you park. I understand you "deserve" a lot of space all to yourself... Parking SIDEWAYS to hog a shit ton of space all to yourself is a dick move.... Especially during the busy season. We once drove over 5 MILES down the beach to find a spot because people hogged so much space. Yes, we all don't want others right on top of us but be mindful of how much area your taking. We also set our tent up directly behind our vehicle during busy times as to not take up too much space. Aside from traffic/parking... the beach seems pretty clean, we haven't noticed much in the way of garbage. This last visit there was a lot of seaweed material on the beach that resembled large crabs. Kind of gross but whatever. There are port-o-potties scattered. This last visit, they seemed few and far between. I don't care to use them unless it's an emergency. They always seem super gross to me. I keep a portable potty in our vehicle for the kids to use. Kids love playing in the sand. Our daughter got stung by a jelly fish for the first time this last visit. Luckily (and randomly) I had a gallon of vinegar in my vehicle... helped take away the sting. Ouch! Definitely not the most glamorous beach. The houses along the shoreline are rundown for the most part. There aren't many attractions/restaurants around... it's pretty low key. If you want the sun, sand and surf... this place will do. If you want more fun and stuff to do, perhaps Galveston would work better. read more

There is a lot of parking in the big lot. No parking on a one way on a nearby road that follows the shore. The pier goes out a bit into the ocean which is cool. You can DRIVE on this beach right by the water and even PARK your car right there on the beach as close to the water as you want. . There is a paid section and a free section -about the same quality. Bring your own drinks, goodies & beach wares-stay the day. There are not many eateries around so if you don't want to bring your own you may have to drive a few minutes. There is a convenience store when you 1st cross the bridge & daiquiri shack. Further down is Kitty's Purple Cow (a must try...especially the bathroom ) and Red Snapper for a little more variety & a sit down meal...there are a few others that change year to year. There's a Bucce's about 5 miles over the huge bridge. It's a great beach to bring the family, cool out, play and exhale. I went on a summer weekday-hardly anyone was there. Soooo needed! read more

Nice, family oriented beach! Needed a quick getaway for the kiddies that wasn't Florida. They've never been so they couldn't compare. The beach is nice and clean. The water was great! Secure and spacious! We stayed in a nearby areas, Clute which is nothing to brag about but the standard brand named hotels are decent. We drove up on the beach. Highly recommend folding chairs and a nice tent. Food is shaken in the area so maybe pack some sandwiches and different snacks. Overall this beach gets the job done! read more

I'm from California, so I probably shouldn't be reviewing a beach in Texas, but I am, and of course I think it compares not! The water was murky (it's the Gulf Mexico) and I dared not enter, but I did enjoy sitting on the shore, digging my toes in the sand and listening to the waves and watch them crash. Watching the nearby paragliders was cool too. There's no denying that God is awesome. The sunset was gorgeous, and I couldn't paint a better picture. Families gathered and even dogs mingled. Worth a visit, and certainly fixed my nostalgia. I hope the water clears up. read more

Arrived just before sunrise. The address on Yelp is incorrect but quickly found the Jetty Pier parking area. This spot is mainly used by fishermen who want pier access. The pier juts out 1/2 mile into ocean. There is also a bathroom here. Next I did a 7 mile run on the beach. I was more intrigued by all the cute stilt houses than I was enthralled with the ocean. Also, So cool how you can just drive and park directly on beach; in Miami where I'm from you can never do that. I opted not to park on beach and just set up my chair on pedestrian beach near pier. No cars allowed there and was quite peaceful. My only regret is I should've used more sunscreen! Before leaving I drove around and just love all the houses on stilts. Such a cool looking community. Not many stores or places to eat so come prepared. read more

Sad to see a beach with so much potential littered with garbage! Seems like the city puts little effort into making sure the beach is free of trash. Invest in a morning raking to clear all the garbage. I understand that some comes from the cruise ships, but what I saw was people throwing their trash and not picking it up. Signs post rattlesnakes habitat in the dune, when some jack ass kills a beautiful snake who was trying to run from the crowd. The whole experience was a big letdown to our entire family. Hope the city does more to keep it clean and establish more signs for the native animals and their habitat. Maybe this beach is meant for the party crowd and we picked the wrong family beach. read more

Not the perfect beach, but is definitely worth checking out! Like most beaches, the water isn't crystal clear, but it's good enough for going in and swimming! I was beyond glad when I saw that there wasn't seaweed or trash piling up at the shore. It's also very wide and has a lot of room for sun bathing, setting up tents, beach activities, etc. Oh, they also have a fresh water hydrant-looking fountain to clean off the beach water or sand off of you! I love it. I was dreading bringing my dirty self into the car. Parking is free, where you can park on the sides of the entrance. Last time I went, I saw that people can park on the shores too, though I don't know if you have to pay for that. However, I saw at least 10 cars getting stuck because they kept going over the sand. But seeing how quick and ready people were to help each other get out of the sand was very heartwarming! If you do get stuck, you can get out by having your car tied to someone else's or have few people pushing it out of the way. But let's not resort to that. Avoid huge pile of sand at all cost! If you turn left at the 'Welcome to Surfside Beach' sign and keep going straight, you'll eventually hit the Crabbing Pier. Make sure you go here super early in the morning (like 5-6am early) because the only one good pier is taken up really quickly. It's located at the very end. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with the piers on the side of the bridge or at very shallow parts of the water. The crabs are very small and it's hard to catch a big ones, but it's worth a shot. Also, remember to spray yourself because there's a lot of mosquitoes. 3/5 for that pile of sand that traps people's car and decent sanitary environment. read more

Went here over the weekend with my family and it was horrible. It was very dirty and the people there were so trashy. It was over crowded with people revving their truck engines and getting sloppy drunk yelling. The ocean water itself is so polluted. It's really sad.. The sand is compact and dirty. There are no public restrooms only porta potties which of course are nasty. There are no hand washing stations. Will never visit a Texas beach again. read more

This beach was not as bright blue as San Diego's ,the sand is very fine gray rather than white, although not beautiful, but comfortable to touch. There are a lot of blue crabs and seashells on the beach, I feel very happy after a day of playing. Next time, I should rent a hotel on the beach and stay there for more days！ read more

A little sun, sand and the ocean was just what I needed! When we arrived at the main entrance there was plenty of parking on pavement which is a plus for those of us whose cars would get stuck in the sand. That being said you can drive onto the sand but, you have to pay to do it. If you are just walking on you don't have to pay or at least we didn't. The beach was packed so, if you are looking for quiet this may not be the place to go. The beach was packed and it was very clean. There is also plenty of little places to eat and grab a drink, little shops and such in this sleepy town. I also saw some dogs on the beach so it must be dog friendly. A group of us went to this beach, driving down from Missouri City (South east side of Houston) Texas, and made a day of hanging out at the beach. It was very busy and we paid the entry fee to drive on the beach and to park in the sand. I think it was $10 for entry fee. The beach although very busy was still covered in lots of seaweed. We found a clear spot and put down some towels to relax on and watch the water and the people. We tried to rent a 10x10 tent, but they were all rented, we also tried to rent a large golf cart after we saw several others riding them up and down the beach, but again, all rented out. Being new to this beach we did not know what to expect. But we learn quickly and know next time, ha. It was a hot and bright sunny day, people were swimming, passing balls back and forth, grilling out, playing music, drinking cold ones and having good time. It was a nice day and a fun time. The kids played in the water, which was pretty warm, the waves were not too bad that day either. The beach was pretty clean with really no trash, as it seems everyone cleaned up their own messes, and took their trash with them. Some people were way out fishing with the water up to their necks. This is where the young guy in my photos caught the approx 3 ft long shark. After showing everyone on the beach, he went way back out in the water and released it. Good things the sharks parents weren't nearby, lol. The beach police patrolled on 4 wheeler's and in 4x4 trucks up and down the beach making sure everyone was safe, and in case anyone needed emergency assistance. We talked to several others and the people were all friendly and everyone was having a good time. We decided to drive up and down the beach too, as it is quite long and to just see the crowds and to look for anything exciting, haha. Overall except for the seaweed, it was a great day enjoyed by everyone in our group. It's hard not to have fun on a sunny nice beach, haha. read more

Here you can swim in crystal clear water, go boogie boarding on the waves and collect the hundreds of different seashells this place has to offer. I have gone to Port A for most of my life, but my wife talked me into going somewhere else. Surfside was a sweet surprise. We stayed close to the jetty, and the beach during the week was nearly abandoned. There were no loud jerks, pacing parade of goons in trucks, or throngs of people to wade through in the water. The accommodations are all homes, which keeps the population low. We stayed in Group Therapy which was a decent and allowed us to have our dog with us. The waves and the beach were a little rough. This place was obviously effected by hurricanes over the past few years. It's highly recommended to wear shoes in the water. I found a lot of glass, although nothing was sharp (sand ground), and there were exposed rocks close to the water's edge. That's not to say a lot of people weren't barefoot. If you're looking to get away, you can't get much further than here. We packed all our food and didn't leave the house and general area for a whole week. It was awesome. It's also cheaper than Port A. read more

Sad excuse for a beach town. I'm not sure who they polled to be named 'best beach,' it certainly wasn't anyone I know. The beach is narrow and difficult to navigate. They charge a comparable price to the Port A beach pass, but there is no comparison. - It's poorly maintained. - The road is one way and constantly blocked by people walking / minivans that have no business going down the beach. Thankfully we have 4x4 and could go around the stupidity. - There were no restrooms or showers in sight. - No fishing piers - The beach itself is VERY narrow and practically unnavigable during high tide. There is no room to actually set up an area with your group to cook out or play cornhole. - People drive like maniacs, we saw a child almost get run over directly next to the water from someone trying to squeeze into a too small space between 2 cars. The beach was enough for us to know we never need to come back. The sad restaurants and disrepair of the public works system in town we're just icing on the cake of our misrepresented weekend. read more

A fun escape only about an hour from Houston. The beach is just like what you would get anywhere on the Texas Gulf Coast (minus maybe Padre Island), but it has a lot less hustle and bustle than nearby Galveston. You are able to drive on the beach in some locations which makes it very convenient to haul your beach party needs and set up home base for the day. We went in mid-April, so technically before the busy season, but the beach was still plenty warm and uncrowded. read more
