I purchased Amano shrimp from this store recently. The shrimp were very small/juvenile (around half an inch), but were sold at standard adult pricing. Unfortunately, a couple of them did not survive within a few days of being introduced to a stable, cycled tank. The staff were polite, but I do think clearer separation between juvenile and adult livestock would help customers know what they're getting. I also noticed a few similar reviews mentioning livestock losses, which matches my experience. Overall, the store has a good selection, but I would recommend customers carefully inspect livestock size and condition before purchasing. But one big issue is that they do tend to be more pricey than other areas I've seen which is fair I get that family owned business but still. I've been to several fish stores in the area and have never had the help and care for fish like I have found here at Aqua Zoo. Shanon and Prosper and their whole team genuinely care about the business and customers and always willing to educate and help. They have saved our fish and tank life more than once. Never shopping here again. Rude and did not want to assist me. Every time I asked for help the elderly worker (who I think is the owner) would walk away to do something else or strike up a conversation with other customers. I had to ask three times for help. When he finally helped me he threw my bag onto the floor. I asked him if he did this to all his customers and he gave a weird smirk and said it depended. On what? Who knows. Maybe on if the customer is white or not. I told him I would not be returning since I found his service rude and poor and he said "good. We don't want to see you here either" while staring at me very intensely. And i definitely knew what he meant. In this day and age people have gotten a lot bolder in showing their true colors. So just a heads up, if you're not white I doubt you'll get much service or attention here. What a poor way to run a business. read more

Gorgeous collection. The moment you walk in you can tell the store owners know what they are doing. All tanks display or not were clean and healthy. I hadn't spotted a single sick/dead fish besides a few natural genetic issues. They have a good freshwater stock as well as a few salt water tanks. They have a wide variety of fish and aquatic animals. Some I'd never seen in personal tanks before. The tanks were gross-looking but I didn't get to ask any questions because the owners weren't open or engaging at all. It was quite jarring to walk inside the building with my two children and just be stared at. The kids didn't notice, but I was incredibly aware. Neither the woman nor the man offered any assistance or even a friendly smile. They both stayed up front and barely acknowledged us when I said hello or goodbye. Although my children saw several fish they would have loved to bring home, I would never spend my money where I'm not wanted and I wont be returning. Although this store doesn't have the aesthetic appeal as some of the other major fish stores in Houston, this mom and pop shop has a diverse selection of freshwater fish at reasonable prices. They have added saltwater tanks and live stock as well as developed a plants section for those like me who love planted aquariums. Not the friendliest people. Bought four large angel fish and they have all since died. They had white fungal infections that I didn't know of at the time. They also didn't want to sell me any discus fish. They just kept saying, "they are really hard to take care of. I have four discus fish that's are doing just fine. Also, the store is so tiny and there is no room to move around. Some tanks were really dirty and some had dead fish in them. Also, their prices were really high compared to other places. I have been going to The Aqua Zoo for years and I believe that the bad reviews here all originated from one person, perhaps the proprietor of another fish store. Prosper and Shannon are both a little shy, but very polite and respectful. Their fish tanks are always immaculate and I have never seen a sick fish in any of them. Their prices are, IMO, average for small stores. Yes, you can get things a little cheaper at the very large pet store chains, but you will never get all that free advice from such knowledgeable people. read more

Awesome service. My heater broke down on New Year's Eve and my discus were freaking out. When I went down to get a new one they were closed but lady was nice enough to open the door for me after I told her whats going on. However few things needs to be mentioned. The supplies they sell at the store is bit overpriced(compared to other mom & pop places I've been to). Ex: eheim jäger 300w I bought from them usually $30 online and I had to pay $50 at the store. Also the store is very very small, but they got almost everything you need to maintain a freshwater aquarium. read more

Was there for first time on a Thursday. There were 2 ladies very actively doing cleaning and maintenance. One acknowledged my presence and said to let her know if I needed help with a fish. They had a large variety of fish types but, not a large selection in the exact type I was looking for. No big deal, I am aware I am particular about the the fish I want. I did see they had a more uncommonly sized aquarium with a sign and price that I was very interested in but, since it hadn't been my plan to get a tank, I was in a smaller vehicle. It would not have been an easy fit and would be a risk of damaging it if I attempted to make it fit. I decided to return that weekend with our bigger vehicle. Since their shop is over an hour away from where we live, I decided to call ahead to confirm they still had the tank available. Here is where it goes downhill. A man answers the business number, he tells me he is not at the shop, the workers at the shop are busy and so they transfered the phone call to him. I explained why I was calling ahead and he acted dumbfounded that I would want to speak with someone actually at the shop to confirm the exact aquarium was still available. I asked if there was any way at all to speak with someone at shop to confirm it was available before I drove the distance. I even asked about possibly calling back in 15 minutes to try to speak with someone at shop who could confirm it was still there. He was rude and unhelpful, acting annoyed that I would bother even calling. He said "should be there" "yea, call back then". He also got an angry attitude when I mentioned the sign and price. He denied the price on the sign we had seen. OK, Mr. rude unhelpful guy. Im assuming he was likely "the owner" but, was floored that as a small business owner he would behave like such a jerk. But, I wanted the aquarium still so, I waited and called back after some time hoping the store would be able to answer and speak with me. No such luck, he answers again. He informed me that he had already called the store directly after getting off phone. And "so, like I said, the aquarium is a higher price". I got the impression from his attitude that he had actually called to tell the store to remove the sign and charge a higher price. I would have paid the higher price, like I said I wanted it and I understand wanting to make enough markup/profit. It was the guy himself that made me change my desire to purchase the aquarium and support their store. I would rather give my money to support someone who isn't a pompous jerk. Also, if you are going to charge a premium price, you should at least provide appreciative helpful service. Don't understand when people started believing they could charge premium prices with less than premium service. I need better reasons to support small business. Customers can typically order from a chain store or off the internet and get the same "discount attitude" along with the discount price.... read more

Great fish store. Lots of selection and variety: fresh and salt water fish, plants and any accessory. Shop is small and therefore somewhat cramped given the selection. Prices are not low, but you get what you pay for - the fish are much healthier than any big box place and the employees are very knowledgeable. I normally don't write post about people or their establishment but the person was so rude to me. I felt it necessary to tell others about my experience. I went into aqua zoo on Thursday l am new to the fish world. I have been doing dog rescue and behavioral training for many yrs. ( not advertising ) but when it comes to the fish world l learning which leads to many questions. Long story short l went into aqua zoo to asked what fish were compatible with the fish l had in my tank. The owners wife was rude, short and almost put out by my presents. I purchased 4 fish that she recommended thinking she might be having a bad day. She told me that since l had a blue Gourami she couldn't sell me a pearl one l asked why because l truly didn't know the Gourami and Pleco came with the tank l Purchased. She told me with a tone of Superiority the blue Gourami was the most aggressive of the breed they did not carry them or any other common fish. I really wanted a pearl so l gave him to my friend who was also new to the fish world. I found out later from other sources that is not always the case. All that l aside l went in today to get my pearl Gourami and told her that the blue Gourami is not always aggressive some can be timid like mine was and even get bullied. She told me her husband has been doing this longer than l have been alive. She was extremely rude to me. I would normally just let it go but this is the second time she treated me like something she stepped in. I asked why are you like this you were rude to me when l came in the other day and even more so today. Well that set her off she told me to leave her store and never come back. I told her she was not a nice person and that l would write a post about how l was treated because no one should have to be treated that way. Her husband was a very nice man but she was even short with him. I would not recommend this place to anyone who is new to the fish world. The lady is very short, rude and Intolerant. She certainly doesn't like to be call out on her rude behavior. She went as far as to tell me l wish l could post about your behavior. I asked her what behavior because l didn't want to be treated badly? After reading other reviews l thought it was just my imagination but l did feel she was racist thinking l was of Spanish decent. They helped me set up and populate my first aquarium several years ago, and are able to order you fish if they don't already have them in the shop. Came in here with my husband and kids last week on my birthday, Asked the owner(lady) I guess if we could get some fish her and I believe her husband were the only ones in the store aside from my family, we waited about 20 mins for our fish that we never got! Mind you we were the only customers in the store and then 10 mins pass two other people came in we waited for our fish the husband told us she'll be with us in just a min, we're thinking she's grabbing some containers for the fish and nets.. nope.... she was servicing some one else that had just got in! Eventually after waiting 30 mins We ended up walking out, they don't deserve our business!! Such a shame, but I guess it's for the best, her tanks looked really filthy really nasty water, couldn't really make out the colors of the fish, and I'm sure if we would of brought the fish home they eventually would of ended up dead! This person completely lacks communication! We will never step foot in this run down place EVER!!! read more

First, this place has a great selection of freshwater fish. They have many freshwater fish that I've never seen in big box stores. Their exotic fish are expensive, but they are of course rare. All of the fish that can be found at big box stores are actually super comparable in price, and come much healthier and more vibrant. I will always come here to purchase fish. Oh and they also have a large selection of shrimp. I can't speak to their selection of saltwater fish since I don't have a salt tank, but it seems pretty good. The people there are very friendly. They know what they are talking about and help with a smile. It's the kind of family store you feel really glad to support. There plant selection is ok, and there are a few tanks with snails. They have a TON of aquarium cener piece decorations. They are tremendously stocked in wood and stones in all shapes and sizes. All at reasonable prices. I haven't needed to get much in supplies, but it looks like they would certainly have whatever you need, but at mom and pop prices. Overall, I love this place. It will at least always be where I get my fish. read more
