For The Win - Triple cheeseburger with sweet potato fries

For the win--literally!…read more After a few hours of shopping, my daughter, granddaughter, and I decided to grab dinner at For the Win. We were all craving burgers, and nothing hits like a fresh smash burger. I ordered the double cheeseburger with bacon and all the toppings, plus a side of sweet potato fries and a cold brisk tea. Everything was delicious. The restaurant was super clean and had a festive vibe with Christmas music playing, which we loved. The staff were very welcoming, and the customer service was top-notch. We'll definitely be back to this location.

I had a pretty frustrating experience ordering from For The Win today, which completely defeated…read morethe purpose of ordering ahead. I placed an online order through their website, and it quoted about a 25-minute prep time with a ready window around 2:56 -3:06 PM. I planned accordingly and even arrived earlier so I could pick it up fresh and avoid waiting. However, just five minutes after placing the order, I received a text saying it was already ready. That immediately raised a red flag, because if you're paying $13+ for a double burger, you expect it to be made closer to your arrival time, not immediately. When I arrived, the burger was already cold. When I brought this up, the employee I spoke with repeatedly said "it's not my fault" and pointed to someone else, instead of taking any ownership or even acknowledging the issue. It was a really poor way to handle a simple customer concern. Eventually, after some back and forth, the burger was remade, but I had to wait another 10-15 minutes. And ironically, it took longer to make it this time than it did after I placed the online order. But then now I wa stuck waiting defeating the whole purpose of ordering ahead. A manager eventually came over and was polite, but by that point the experience had already been frustrating. They also threw away the original burger instead of offering to let me keep it, which felt wasteful. On top of that, when I asked for a couple cups of water for my daughter, I was told I'd need to purchase a bottle, which felt pretty tone-deaf given the situation and didn't even think to offer me any anything for the misunderstanding and having to wait extra time now... The bigger issue here is the lack of coordination and communication. If you're going to quote customers a pickup time, especially for hot food, the order should be made accordingly--not immediately after it's placed. Otherwise, you're guaranteeing that the food won't be fresh when the customer arrives. Between the timing issue, the lack of ownership from staff, and the overall handling of the situation, this was a disappointing experience. I usually like the food, but the service and process today really need improvement.

Ventured into Hi Ho at the height of Friday dinner time, when the whole Sportsmen's Lodge shopping…read more& dining nook was packed with people, including at least 75 kids under the age of 6. Yowza! Luckily, Hi Ho wasn't quite as busy as the pizza and ice cream shops, but there were still quite a few folks, and the staff did manage to tend to everyone nicely. If you haven't been, Hi Ho is a simple, fast food burger joint in terms of decor, but the menu (from the same people who own Matu) is a small, curated selection of very high quality options: mostly Wagyu burgers in a few different configurations, and chicken tenders + some very good, hand cut fries. This time I opted for the Pastrami Heat, a double cheeseburger fortified with spicy grilled onions and a not-too-large topper of Wagyu pastrami. I don't usually go for such an elaborate burger, but I just had a hankering. And while I won't say the burger was small, it was not as ridiculously enormous as you might get other places. The double patties were juicy and flavorful, nicely seasoned and coated in properly melted American cheese. The spicy grilled onions did pack a nice punch, but there weren't a lot of them, so their effect was minimal (definitely could use more of those). House-made pickles were pleasingly artisan, with a layered, briny flavor far more enjoyable than the commercial dill chips usually deployed. Finally, the Wagyu pastrami was really quite good. Marbled and juicy without be too fatty or too rich, thinly shaved and portioned just large enough to make its presence known without becoming unwelcome halfway through. Though decadent for sure, this was an enjoyable treat that was only about 50% guilt-inducing. Fries were fresh, hot, crispy and well done, cooked in beef tallow. Also a treat. Prices are in line with what you're paying at other fast casual burger places like Five Guys or Burger Lounge, but the quality here is definitely a step above, so you could almost say it's a deal. Of course, if you also stop into neighboring Erewhon for a smoothie, your budget will be blown.

It's juicy, flavorful, and somehow still simple and perfectly balanced without needing a bunch of unnecessary extras. What really says everything though is that it's kid approved. Kids can be some of the toughest food critics, and this burger passes the test every time. If a wagyu burger can impress both adults and kids, you know they're doing something right. Everything always tastes fresh and well made, and the consistency is great. It's the kind of place where you go in expecting a good burger and somehow it still manages to exceed expectations. If you're a burger lover and haven't tried HiHo yet, you're seriously missing out. Easily one of the best burger spots around.

This is pricier than other burger places I frequent but the quality is better and sometimes you have to pay more for higher quality food options. I got the dairy free version of their cookies and cream shake and I made the right choice. While I'm not lactose intolerant, my tummy can feel some type of way with too much dairy. But I couldn't resist getting actual whipped cream so make of that what you will. The dairy free versions of their shakes are great if you want the flavor and sweetness without the heaviness and occasional gastric discomfort. Plenty of parking as this is in a strip mall

tl;dr the rich and crispy smash burgers are the best in the neighborhood, worthy of the premium…read moreprice; I'm sad to see the Silver Lake location shutter The broad Los Angeles burger scene is equal parts vast and contentious, and many of the most popular spots began amidst the pandemic. Such is the case with Heavy Handed, which debuted as a backyard pop-up just before the shutdown. Heavy Handed distinguishes itself on the basis of its short rib burger base and meme-filled marketing. Heavy Handed transitioned to a food truck in 2021 and now operates two brick-and-mortar locations across LA (this Silver Lake location just closed its doors). The Silver Lake outpost took over the space of beloved diner All Day Baby on a bustling strip of Sunset. The exterior combined HH's signature sunset-orange color palette with psychedelic, LA- and burger-themed murals designed by local artist DJ Neff. The spacious dining room was warmly lit by a red neon strip running the length of the ceiling. Seating options ranged from upholstered half-booths to standard wooden tables and chairs to the bar counter around the corner. Classic rock echoed around the room. My partner and I visited for weekend lunch. We ordered immediately, and our food was available within minutes. We opted to split a Double Short Rib Burger. Immediately, I was impressed by the crispy, slightly charred edges around the circumference. Meanwhile, the center bites were addictively rich and juicy. The thick-cut pickles added a vinegary snap, while the diced onions were caramelized to a jam-like consistency. The service was friendly and efficient. At first, we raised our eyebrows at the $13 pricetag, but we were satisfied with the generous portion and delicious taste. In a busy, burger-heavy neighborhood (including wildly popular peer smash burgers at The Win-Down and Goldburger), this was our favorite one.
