Magical. What a treat of a restaurant in Oaxaca. This tasting menu venue has unbelievable service, a gorgeous venue with an open sky in center, unbelievable service, and wow the food was incredible. I don't know how this place is not Michelin. And we did a tasting menu with alcohol pairing and the total was under $150/person, to me that's less than half the price of a similar tasting menu without the alcohol! The food was truly incredible, the dinner lasted 2.5 hours, the beverage liquor pairing wasn't just wine, it was beer cocktails truly a fun dinner. I couldn't recommend Criollo enough. If you come to Oaxaca this is the most visit restaurant.

    Fried fishy squash blossom

I was really looking forward to this meal, but it was a huge let down. To put it into perspective, I also ate at Casa Oaxaca (excellent), Levadura de Olla (decent), and Los Danzantes. This was by far the most expensive and the least worth it. (3,200 pesos for 2 people on a prix -fixe menu, including the added IVA tax--tip was extra). The main issue was that the flavor profiles did not go well together. The first dish was a squash blossom with a fishy stuffing over a bland corn purée. Why was it so fishy? Like, not umami fishy. Fishy fishy. The second app was a croquette also on top of a poorly seasoned "bean purée." A LOT of the food was poorly seasoned purées. To the point where I was like, why am I eating all this baby food? The best course was a "salad," which was also a green veggie purée with cubed chilacayote squash and Lima beans and peas. That was the best tasting thing I had, but it's not a "salad." Also, salad should never be the star of the show. After, we were served a red snapper ceviche tostada with a type of curtido on top. It was also way too fishy and would have been better with just canned tuna even. Again, this dish needed acid and did not come with lemon/lime or enough heat. It was topped with a spicy mayo that was too sweet/creamy and didn't work. Next dish was a soft shelled crab taco with a tamarind purée and a bechemel sauce with tobiko. From the pictures online I was really looking forward to this plate. But why was it so sweet and creamy? Flavors that do not go with crab or seafood. It needed acid on the plate. It was topped with julienned "pickled" jalapeño (flavorless) and fried capers (not enough salt to complement dish). How can you mess up soft shelled crab? Fry it in some seasoned flour and drench with lemon. But this crab was oily, the flavor was off-putting, and the sauces did not complement the plate. The rib eye (3 small bite-sized slices of it) was cooked nice and rare (if you like it rare--they do not ask your preference btw), but the mole sauce under it was overpowered by an overpowering smokey mezcal taste. The Demi glace was ok, but the sesame and the mole took away from it. The desert was interesting: A corn cake with vanilla cream and a weird lemongrass pineapple compote, served with ice cream, but again the fruit compote had a weird aftertaste. I don't mind lemongrass where it belongs, but it didn't belong here. My wife couldn't go past the first fishy dish of squash blossoms and still tried to get a taste of the tostada, but that bite did her in and activated her nausea. Thank goodness the bathrooms were super clean. The ambiance was on point. The garden seemed beautiful, but it was dark and had no lighting. So we just stared into the abyss. The music was good and the service was EXCELLENT. No hate to the servers. Our waiter brought my wife a blanket (it was cold) and he offered her a mint tea for her queasy stomach. But I go to restaurants for the food, not the service or the ambiance. Those two are luxuries, but the driving force should be flavor. There were too many ingredients on each plate that were mismatched, and dishes that were way too ambitious and missed the mark. Presentation and plating was awesome, but everything tasted weird. BTW everyone there is a foreigner (cuz it's freaking overpriced) and although I am American, I was put off by how loud and obnoxious the vibe was. Not the restaurant's fault, but you guys are attracting the wrong crowd. TL:DR, cooking technique was executed perfectly --but flavors were just off. Way too many purées. I get it, you went to French culinary school, probably. But if it wasn't bland, or fishy, it was weird tasting and off putting. I had such a great trip and thought I would come back to Oaxaca, but this meal tainted the overall experience.

Criollo is more than just fancy dining but rather an experience - from the roosters walking around to the beer made in-house and only served here! This review is also special (#50) because I was excited for this place given the personal recommendation but also it being a review that achieved a personal goal! The location is off a main road in Oaxaca and is in an unassuming building with a beautiful courtyard! Once inside you see the freshly made tostadas and tortillas they serve you! It's a seasonal (and ever changing) preset menu based on the crops of the season! You can choose to have an experience served with alcohol or not (the only options). They do ask about any allergies or dietary restrictions, and serve 6 dishes for each course. They explain everything to you once served. My favorites were this soup like dish with an avocado base, a crunch pork skin over risotto, and this mango over passion fruit sorbet! I loved my experience and would definitely come again!

I can't express my gastronomic appreciation for this place adequately. This restaurant is nestled into an intimate space where exceptional food and service are delivered. Each dish better than the next, while still longing for the last. As you walk in you can feel the love and passion that goes into the preparation for the night's 6-course meal. This is a price fixed menu with three options: the six courses with libation pairing, six courses without alcohol pairing, or a clever 3rd option where you can share the six courses, the first 4 being served to both individuals and the last 2 courses are shared. You can purchase the wine/cocktail pairing with this option or just order as you wish. The food is ample so it is very satisfying for option 3, but I wore stretchy pants so I was all in, i want it all! It will not do the plates justice for me to describe each dish, as my focus was on tasting and not listening and remembering the fine descriptions of each magical plate. From the starter plate to the palate cleanser followed by dessert, it was simply incredible. The pairings of cocktails, wine, and beer were on point and made the flavors of each dish pop. This meal is well worth the money spent, leaving a never-to-be forgotten memory etched in your heart and soul. For giggles, there is a hefty rooster roaming around who is very comfortable around fine diners. Get your cocktails and your cock-a-doodle-doos all in one place. Garcias Criollo, this was epic.

Had a wonderful experience celebrating three friends' birthday in this beautiful Michelin rated restaurant located on the outskirts Oaxaca. Restaurant is located in a beautiful courtyard with light tones and touches in their design motif. Dining in a dimly lit restaurant with beautiful trees around us was just beautiful. The service was attentive and organized. The staff has friendly and engaged. The food was spectacular! They offer a tasting menu and everything was elevated and Michelin Star worthy. I'm not giving a five start because they did not have any suitable or appropriate substitutes for some of their tasting menu items, especially since they don't publish the menu in advance. It is essentially a blind tasting menu. Too many vegetables items and not enough protein (80% vege and 20% protein). No bag for your buck here as it is a very expensive restaurant.

Criollo is by far the number one fine dining restaurant in the whole of Oaxaca De Juarez. They do Chef's Table every seating and from start to finish it was incredible showcasing what Oaxaca has to offer on a fine dining level. For the wine pairings it was a mix of beers, wines and spirits which was new to us. It worked very well with the dishes. The server Laura was outstanding in her attention to detail, explanation of the dishes and her ability to communicate in English considering our diabolical attempts at Spanish. The decor & ambience at Criollo is definitely Mid Century Modern with elements of California style for sure. It really was beautiful. The place was full of diners with good reason. If you are in Oaxaca and you want to try Criollo you can book on OpenTable. It's located just outside El Zocalo and I advise getting a cab. Cheap. We had an epic time here.

Great ambiance, cute casual or dressy attire. The vibe is cozy. Excellent customer service and the food is to die for. We had the 7 course meal. You get 7 different dishes paired with a cocktail. Go hungry because you will be loving every part of the meal and you don't want to be too full for dessert. The dessert is out of this world! You will not be disappointed and reservations are a must.

Criollo is an entire vibe! I'd considered not going to my rezzie when my stomach was a bit upset from eating and drinking throughout town during the day but I'm so glad I talked myself out of that idea. This place is a must. The setting is so perfect! I'll be honest in saying I wasn't able to eat everything, but I tried everything. I did the dinner tasting menu, without the drink pairing because I knew my stomach couldn't tolerate too much. I ordered one ginger mezcal cocktail that was very yummy! I made my way through my first few dishes, but I was only able to take a few bites of both of my main dishes with red snapper and shrimp. Everything was lovely but my stomach forever acts up. I came prepared with a bag full of papaya enzymes but even these couldn't help me by my second day in Mexico. Regardless of not eating all or even more than a bite or two of some dishes I'd without any doubt recommend Criollo. This is probably one of my most fun dining experiences. I'd love to host a large dinner party here, there's something really magical about the outdoor space and you without a doubt do not want to miss it. Book a rezzie here if you're looking for a special evening. I was on a solo trip and deeply appreciated the company of the bunnies. They came and sat with me for most all of my dinner ;) most all animals gravitate towards me, my son calls me snow white and I loved the chickens and bunnies made my heart so happy through dinner. They called me a taxi and got me back to my hotel safely after dinner. I'd say this is a perfect place for business dinners, couples, birthdays, anniversaries or like me when you're just looking for a fun experience. I did not leave disappointed in any way whatsoever.

This restaurant was very nice and the food is a contemporary Mexican cuisine. The restaurant has an outdoor and indoor section. It's great for groups or as a date night. We had to take a taxi from the city center where we were staying but it was not expensive!! After dinner the chef brought us all dessert that he made that day-- it was great. I would highly recommend this place if you are ever in Oaxaca.

    5th course!
    Mary G.

Amazing food and service! We highly recommend this experience! It was a 6 course meal with a different drink with each course. Drinks were optional, the price is lowered if you choose not to go that route. Every single course was sight fully appealing, delightful and delicious! Even though the courses were small, there was so much food, we could hardly finish the last course. The ambiance, combined with the respectful & caring service made the experience very special.

I was truly looking forward to this restaurant being a relation to Pujol in Mexico City. The drinks were very flavorful, and some were ingenious. All the ingredients mixed together so well when they looked so out of place on the menu. Unfortunately, the food was a letdown. The flavor profile did not go well together. I was surprised and happy to see a while softshell crab on my plate. However, the accompanying sauce was too sour, and it was smothered in guacamole. The crab was too oily. It was sad to see the natural sweetness of this good-sized soft shell crab ruined by the cooking and accompanying sauces. The appetizers, entrees, and desserts were repetitive. My sentiments are similar to the previous reviewers, I would recommend other local restaurants like Levadura de Olla and Teocintle Tika'aya over this restaurant.

    Beautiful setting

We had our the best dish of our culinary and cooking tour of Oaxaca here. Our service was service was excellent when we arrived early in the evening. As things become busier it was less attentive. I'm definitely glad we visited and I'd suggest an early dinner reservation.

I thought it was funny when I got the menu and the food menu was only one page while the drink menu was five pages. The outside of the restaurant is blue-ish and the restaurant has multiple rooms. The ceviche del dia ($190 MXN) was a little sweet and not as tart or sour as others I've had. The tacos de sirloin ($170) were really good and were our group's favorite. The taquitos dorados de mole negro ($140) were okay; there was no meat just in case you were wondering. The aguachile rojo de camaron ($190) were good. The esquite con tuetano ($100) was not like a typical corn in a cup but it was closer to a corn soup. For drinks I had the pequeño gigante ($210) which was good. The paloma madura and paloma margarita were both favorites among our group. We went during the day and it wasn't that busy but supposedly it gets way busier and livelier at night.
