Greed at it's finest.
I don't want to rag on the manager or other tenants of this facility but this place is just so underserved because of the greed of the landlord. First of all, when I first inquired about this place they advertised free utilities and central air. WRONG. I have lived here for almost a year and can say without a doubt that the landlord tries to spend as little as possible on the air and heating(further evidenced by many tenants owning their own portable air conditioners!). Whenever the air conditioner did come on it was like the scene in Mad Max when the Immortan Joe unleashed a brief downpour of water onto the peasants(could pretty much hear my landlord saying, DO NOT BECOME ADDICTED TO AIR CONDITIONING MY FRIENDS) and I would have to rush to shut all the windows to try and keep as much of the cool air in as possible. I also remember when it started heating up in February that adjustments were not made to the heating and as such it would be sweltering hot with HOT AIR pouring into the apartment. Absolutely no Fs given.
Another thing that made made upset was the low flow of the toilet when I first moved in. Within weeks of when I first moved in before I went to work the toilet clogged and overflew on the floor(for number 1 not even number 2!). I, after panicking and mopping up disgusting toilet water and youtubing how toilets worked, determined that the cause was because the chain was adjusted to be too long, so whenever the flush lever was pushed, the flapper only raised a little bit(meaning less water flew down into the bowl to flush the toilet, i.e. more clogs). Upon educating myself in plumbing I manually adjusted the chain to be shorter, and thus my flushes to be more forceful, and I never got another clog again. My point in bringing this up is that I feel that because of how the heating/cooling situation is handled, the landlord, motivated by greed, purposefully planned for the toilets to have the lowest water usage possible despite the issues it may cause the tenant in order to save costs.
While the other tenants and manager are all fine and well, I would highly recommend living elsewhere. Overall it was uncomfortable, loud, and unpleasant to live here and I would not recommend it to a friend.
UPDATE: Although I had a walk through with the manager as I am entitled by California law with no issues noted, the landlord still has taken 66% of my security deposit! The manager upon viewing my unit which was nearly finished being cleaned remarked at how nice it was kept(because I didn't wear my shoes inside) and that the only thing which might be deducted was the floor (which was simply dirty, and I was able to clean). I then asked her to tell me if anything else needed repair before the end of my lease. She mentioned painting(which she did not mention AT ALL during the inspection). The whole point of the inspection was to allow me time to fix anything to prevent deductions from my security deposit. Fast forward I get a bill for 200 dollar carpet cleaning and 200 for paint and labor. WHEN WAS THIS MENTIONED? First of all, I had 2 rooms and a staircase, with 2 closets steam cleaned in my house for $97 dollars so $200 is way overpriced for a tiny 400sqft apartment! 2nd of all, the manager did not mention anything was wrong with the paint and certainly not $200 worth of issues. Furthermore, while I requested that invoices be provided to me with deductions, he hires his own BROTHER IN LAW to perform all repairs so it's most certainly obvious that he is giving him kick backs from taking advantage of tenants. I consider myself a reasonable and fair person, who can admit when mistakes have been made but in this case I genuinely feel victimized by a landlord who wants to get as much as he can from someone who he's never going to see again out of greed.
Bottom line the landlord here is a STRAIGHT UP CROOK and I would not even tell my worst enemy to live here! STAY TF AWAY! read more
