I stopped into the Crescent Moon Cafe for a quick late lunch on a Southern USA road trip. At the time of my visit, I was the only diner and that made for quick and efficient service. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich on croissant with a side of potato salad. The sandwich wasn't really anything special whereas the potato salad was top notch. Just the perfect balance of dressing and seasonings. I can see why this restaurant would would be local favorite. As a person passing through town, I can't say that I would recommend someone going out of their way to stop. But, if you were in the area and wanted to support a local responsibly priced restaurant then I would give Crescent Moon a try. read more

Man, Hickory has changed a shitload since I left back in '99. I still go home several times a year but the beer culture is really growing there and it makes me jealous. This place was awesome. I cant think of another place in Hickory as good as this. Most places will have some craft beer on draft and it is stuff that is found at many other bars and restaurants. These guys had shit I had never seen in Hickory before. Founders Breakfast Stout, Bells Christmas, and many others. They had one barrel aged stout that was outstanding but my memory has let me down on which beer it was. If I was a local, I would be at this place many times per week. Even the food was good. I had a reuben and it was delicious. I cant wait for my next trip home so I can go back here again. Top notch joint! read more

My boyfriend and I walked in on a Tuesday night about 7:15-20. No one greeted us nor was there a sign saying seat yourself, wait for seating, etc. so we sat ourselves. Was about 10 min before we were greeted. We both are managers in restaurants so we were not mad about this. It seemed the bartender had a wrapped bar as well as several tables. Where were the servers? Worst of all it seemed as if the older manager was just standing behind the bar conversing with guests instead of helping the bartender who was clearly in the weeds. We saw him run some food, but that was about it. He just stood around talking and drinking something out of a mug. That's not restaurant worthy teamwork in our opinion. However the food and drinks were delicious as well as the bartender who was our server. She was so positive even though it was obvious she was extremely busy. Management needs improvement. read more

after spending two hours at the DVM on a Wednesday afternoon, my friend and I were starving and found this place on yelp. Super cute small town feel, extremely attentive (but not annoying) waitress and the food was actually BOMB. As a vegan, I hate enforcing the stereotype and requesting tons of adjustments to dishes on the menu. We had to make vegan adjustments to the two dishes we ordered, but the waitress had no problem or hesitation with that, which was so great. Well-prepared and good-tasting food in a casual atmosphere. Excellent selection of domestic beers and microbrews. Service is friendly and usually prompt unless it's crowded, but it's worth the wait. This is as close to a British pub as you'll find in this area - maybe in the country. read more

I'm from Hickory and anytime I go to visit family I know as a vegan I'm going to not have the best selection of food when dining out. However, I was bounce on your seat excited to find Crescent Moon in an internet search. Their homepage states "Vegetarian / vegan / gluten free friendly". Score! I went with a friend around 3:00 on a Friday afternoon. I was surprised to see the bar full at that time of day but I believe there was a game on they were all interested in. All the tables were empty. The décor is cute but it's missing something. It feels like a room with some tables and a bar thrown in, not like a thought out restaurant or bar. As the bar was full we grabbed one of the hightop tables. The bartender came over promptly with menus. We requested a beer listing and that came quickly also. They have a decent selection of microbrews. I questioned the bartender about what food options were vegan friendly (they have vegetarian marked). She didn't know what vegan meant. Never a good sign. If you're advertising vegan - educate your staff. I decided to use my judgment and order a sandwich that I could modify to make vegan - The New Moon. She told us they were out of sprouts. No problem, sub spinach. I assumed the aioli was egg based and asked her to substitute the veganaise they carry. I requested the bulgur wheat salad as my side. Our beers and water were delivered and suddenly the place filled up leaving only a handful of empty tables. It was entirely too much for the bartender to handle alone and she was visibly frazzled (it didn't help a group of women ordered one of every frou frou drink imaginable). We received an emergency phone call and needed to leave shortly. We requested the food to go. It was an average wait for the togo boxes. However, the sandwich brought instead of The New Moon was The Half Moon - a drastically different sandwich. As we had to go I didn't have time to have them correct the order and just asked her to bring a side of sun-dried tomato hummus so I could make it work. The other order was correct. The sandwich was pretty damn boring. The hummus made it edible but I kept thinking about the barbecue tempeh I so wanted to try! The bulgur wheat salad was citrusy and bad. I threw it out after one bite. Summary - Teach your staff the menu and how to press the right buttons on the screen. Fix the ambiance and reconsider staffing if rushes like that are common. Keep the beer and menu with a few tweaks. All in all I'd give them another shot but I was wholly unimpressed this visit but I appreciate the progressive attitude in Hickory. read more

This is largely a sandwich-and-beer place, with an emphasis on the beer. The selection of craft beers is better than you will find almost anywhere else in this region. The menu is OK (I have been told it is tempeh-heavy, though it didn't really occur to me until that was said). The TVs here are much better-placed than at the one-block-away Olde Hickory Tap Room, so it's a much more comfortable place to sit as a single person or even as several wanting to watch a game. read more

This is a great spot for lunch, dinner or drinks. Their beer menu is quite large and varied. They specialize in micro brews on tap. They have a few domestics to satisfy the locals who refuse to drink anything other than what they have drank since they were sneaking beers out of their dads fridge. Their menu is all organic food and is very varied. I didnt eat anything cause it was late, and I had already ate, but I did have a few beers. I had the pumpkin ale from Highland brewery in Asheville, It was great, tasted a bit like apple butter. The bar guys/girls are very knowledgeable about the brews they serve and if you wish, you can sample. So forget the Bud Light and broaden your horizons, expand your pallet, try something new! read more

Home on vacation from San Diego visiting my family for Christmas, being a vegan, I was already prepared to null my buds while in beautiful Hickory because I figured there would be much less selection. Crescent Moon is not only PHENOMENAL, but the atmosphere is amazing, the art and music set a great ambiance. The draft list is great, the craft beer was amazing. I had the New Moon sandwich: an Asian BBQ tempeh with slaw made with vegenaise and bulgar wheat salad and a porter- it was amazing. My youngest brother, whom is not a vegan, had the Club with the nacho chips and he LOVED IT. On top of ALL this- it was very very reasonably priced. I will be GLAD to frequent here on my future visits here! read more

I'm a fan of the food, but some of the staff could use some help. Some of the workers seem to think their work is also time to socialize, hit on customers, or spend time with s/o while ignoring customers. Molly (I think her name is) forgot to get our beer and forgot to turn in our food order until we asked her if the food would be coming soon. This was after walking by us 3-4 times and then saying, "Oh I forgot your beer." There were only a couple of other people there when all of that happened. Later when some of the staff changed over, the guy in the Yankees rolled his eyes when we asked for a beer list. I saw him check on several tables and totally ignore one table until one of the people sitting there stopped him. The other people working were great. Those 2 might have been having a bad day. Or they be in the wrong job and need to move to a profession where there is no interaction with people. read more

It used to be five stars but change in management/ownership has affected it. Great beer selection and the service is usually really on. Very cool inside. Something you'd expect to find in Charlotte. Specials are usually very good. Prices are decent. Food comes out reasonably fast. My issue is the lunch menu is the same as dinner menu with the addition of flat breads. The Crescent Moon is a darling little cafe in downtown Hickory with a nice variety of cafe style appetizers, soups, and sandwiches, and a full bar. Not a beer drinker, but they apparently have an extensive list to choose from with amble local offerings. The atmosphere is comfortable without being crowded. It has lovely soft blue lighting fixtures that highlight paintings from local artists, and the dark wood seen in old taverns. When you do go, try the mango chutney quesadillas or the apple walnut salad. A perfect time to go is before or after seeing a movie at the old Carolina Theater less than a block away. read more

The atmosphere here is great with a nice beer and wine selection. The hours are really good and this is one of Hickory's better independent restaurants. The length of time between arriving, getting drinks and dinner is way too long considering its such a small place and I don't think the food itself is all that good but it's great for social gatherings when you aren't in a hurry. read more
