Crema Coffee + Bakery is a charming little corner of Portland where trees do their best to shade you from the honest ugliness of a city intersection. It is a short walk from the Oregon Convention Center, which is how I found myself there during a lunch break, looking for desperately needed caffeine and perhaps a small dose of humanity. The place is small, with a few tables inside and a couple more outside under those trees that haven't yet given up. I ordered the Caramel Sutra, partly for the pun and partly because the barista suggested it with a smile that could sell sand in a desert. The drink was good, just sweeter than I prefer, like a greeting card with too much glitter. Still, it was thoughtfully made. What stuck with me more than the coffee was the barista himself, who managed to make our entire group laugh without being irritating. A rare talent. There are free dog treats on the counter and a general feeling that dogs are more than welcome, which is a sign of a decent place in any city. Stopped by for a latte to go. Staff was friendly. I like the way the wood beams were organized on the ceiling. Plenty of seating. Ordered one of their signature lattes, the honey vanilla latte. i usually enjoy Crema but we had a disappointing experience at this location. we stopped by the NE Couch location because Crema advertised carrying a grapefruit espresso tonic (my partner's favorite) ONLY at this location on Instagram. we've never been here before, so it was a surprise to see this Crema was more of a "small format" compared to the others. it was noon and they were already wiped out on sandwiches (so much for a small bite to eat). the barista did not seem like they were happy to be there. they had airpods in their ears and barely spoke a word to us, not even a friendly hello or greeting. turns out they didn't have the grapefruit tonic as promised, it was a blood orange tonic. i ordered my usual honey vanilla latte and my partner ordered the blood orange tonic. it took awhile for our drinks to come out, and i could tell by one look at the espresso tonic it had been made incorrectly. it looked nothing like the Instagram photo. my partner took one sip after we walked out and said it was terrible. normally, i'm a fan of advocating for oneself and giving them another chance to make it right, but the one barista was the only barista there and their whole attitude and demeanor was off, so we didn't bother. read more

My fiancé and I decided to go for a waterfront walk this weekend. We stopped by Crema for some hot lattes to carry along and thought it was great! My oat milk latte was superb and the barista was great. We will stop by again next time we want something wonderful to keep us warm during our dreary, beautiful waterfront walks. Feel like they could use a second employee for a few hours in the morning since they have food (the kickstart sandwich, paninis etc) which can slow things down (but is also one of the reasons I come here). This place is a calm place to either sit inside or out, while enjoying a refreshing chai tea with vibrant notes of spices and a delicate taste of black tea and honey. I didn't try this location until my work mainly closed up back in March because of COVID. I do go in the office once a week or so to drop off work and pick up. Since it's on the way home, I stop by to get my Crema fix. Just like their older sibling, this location has all the pastry and coffee fixins. When the toilet paper shortage was going on, they even sold TP and some other staples as an added bonus. It is smaller than their main location but it gets the job done. I always tip well when I grab a pastry or 2 or 3 to take home and the service is always stellar. I'm not vegan, but this place has a lot of vegan options for those who are, but they're tasty too. Ordered the London Fog and remind me of the tea I'd conjure up with the old Earl Grey a while back. Their coffee selections are delectable and and unique of their own creations. If you're a chocolate addict then you'll love the vegan fudge brownie and I am one of those! So delicious and chewy. Vietnamese Ice coffee is great! Staff is pretty good. Always popping with customers...I am not too impressed with the food I had.. I had a pop over and it was just to heavy and oily for me. I.e. in Late Aug 2022 they are still on full COVID lock down with a mask requirement. Crema gets a new location! Located in the Dumbbell Building (that's the colorful swirly-painted one) off of NE Couch and MLK, the second outpost of Crema is pretty nice, if you know what to expect. Unlike their OG shop, it's really easy to find a place to sit. When I came in at 10am on a Monday, I was the only person in the store, while I know if I had gone to their SE Ankeny shop, I'd be struggling to find a free table. For their sake I hope their business beefs up quickly, but that shouldn't be a problem, considering how much apartment construction is happening within a block or two of the shop. Of course, this corner does already have 2 other coffee shops, but whatever. The coffee is good, and they support local roasters like Upper Left and Coava. The baked goods that they serve are tasty, but it should be noted that their selection is much smaller than that at the original. That's probably because they're not actually a bakery. They still serve the kickstart breakfast sandwich, a few paninis, and a number of pastries. It's just not the bounty that you might otherwise expect. Right off the streetcar line and a number of major bus routes, the new Crema is awfully easy to get to. I'll be here often. read more

I really want to like this place, I do. Because I've had nothing but great experiences at the original one. When I saw the Crema was moving in near my apartment I was excited as now I had access to some great coffee. But after today, I think I might be going to other places for a while. I walked in and was the only person in the shop, and it was quiet. The person working seemed less than interested in seeing me as he didn't even say hi or greet me. The only real saving grace here for me was that they serve local coffee which is always nice to see. Unfortunately, my cappuccino was ruined because it was served lukewarm at best and took quite a while to be made. Save yourself some time and go to Cosube across the street for good coffee and at the very least, friendly people with good service with a nice atmosphere. read more
