Lake 'N Pines Lodge - The Angler's Nook with private deck

Lake N' Pines Lodge was the choice after hours spent looking at spots to stay near Traverse City…read more My girlfriend has a great track record picking good places, and she did not disappoint this time. We were welcomed to LNP by the couple who own the small lodge. We stayed on the second floor of the guest house, with a deck looking out onto the water. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with a calming, woodsy decor, and a lot of thought put into the details. The owners had left us a couple sodas in the fridge, and lots of nice soaps and stuff in the bathroom. They invited us to canoe on the lake, but I really wanted a nap after the drive in from Chicago, and my girlfriend found the hundreds of channels on TV. We filled out a menu card, and breakfast was brought up to our room in the morning. It was a really treat, and for guests like us who would rather eat a private breakfast, the best accommodation a B&B could make. The location was super close to Traverse City and the National Park, but also set off plenty, on back roads. Interlochen reminded me of the north woods of Wisconsin, and is home to a major NPR station. The stay at Lake N' Pines Lodge really put me at ease.

Since we wouldn't be getting in until close to midnight, we pre-arranged our check-in and had a cute welcome letter and breakfast card waiting at our arrival. This was our first B&B experience and it was the little touches that will have us coming back. There were complimentary bottles of water and soda in the fridge. The kitchen had several amenities such as: pots, pans, utensils, and even spices. So if you wanted to, you could prepare all your meals on site. We were here for a wedding, so we did not utilize this feature, but worth noting. Room service was complimentary every morning and the options for breakfast were expansive and delicious. I had the blueberry pancakes the first morning and eggs, bagel, and sweet potatoes the next. Both were served with Coffee and OJ and seriously good! The room itself was the perfect size for two people, but had a hideaway bed, that could sleep two additional people. The decor was what you would expect of a northern Michigan fish town, log furniture and a touch of kitsch. Outside, we had our own mini-deck, table and chairs. There was a decent sized flatscreen in our room with over 100 channels a DVD player. We just channel surfed in between our trip excursions, but they even had a new selection of movies in the main house that could be borrowed. The location is what really cemented our appreciation for this place. It is far enough off the beaten trail that nature overtakes the sound of motorists. There is an on-sight dock with complimentary boats, kayaks, and canoes that can be taken out. It is absolutely beautiful. Here you are halfway between Benzonia and Traverse City, which we found particular ideal. My only gripe was that the bedding and towels were both musty upon arrival. I am sure that our hosts would have taken care of it right away had we said something, but we were exhausted and it wasn't worth the hassle. This aside, it was still a great and hospitable place to stay. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Stayed here for one night during a Northwest Michigan nature getaway. Jan and Jim are both super hip kind folks that gladly take care of your every need or want. Jan was very accommodating with my vegan lifestyle and made me a delicious breakfast. The rooms are all decorated different, with lots of original and traditional Victorian decor. Lots of opportunity to learn about the history of the home, the prior owners, and the town. Plenty of literature. The sunroom is fantastic! Hoping this honest reviews helps anyone interested in booking with Coastal Suites…read more We try to support small, local businesses as much as possible, which is why we chose Coastal Suites vs. a larger chain that was cheaper in price. Coming in from Seattle, we booked this for a wedding we were attending nearby for one of my boyfriend's best friends. Unfortunately, we came down with Covid and immediately tried to get in touch with this hotel to cancel our reservation. Their line rang endlessly and instead of being able to leave a voicemail, the call ended with a continuous busy signal after regular dial tones. I must have called at least 20 times when we were within the 7 day cancellation policy. I eventually got through to their voicemail and left a total of 2-3 voicemails, in which I stated the issue with their line and not being able to get through to a person or leave a VM, at the very least. Those also went unanswered. By the time the crew got back to me, we were conveniently outside the 7 days to cancel for a full refund. I then asked to get in touch with the manager, as no one seemed empathetic, understanding, or helpful in dealing with this already painful situation. I spoke with Cari, the general manager, over text, as she wouldn't call me...She coldly offered me a 50% refund as a best case scenario, ignoring all the steps I took to cancel and get 100% of the reservation back. She then said 100% would only be possible if they filled the room, which didn't seem fair at all. I then asked to speak with the owner. The next day, I received an email from Anna, one of the owners. She also avoided the phone call I requested and blamed meetings...I, too, am in meetings most of the day, but there is always 5 minutes that can be found, especially given all I had gone through up to this point. She also pressured me into cancelling the reservation so they could try to re-rent the room, but I wasn't comfortable potentially losing 50% of this reservation if they didn't rebook it (they had 2 other rooms that were cheaper available so the odds didn't seem good). I gave her full context of what happened up to this point, and she disregarded all of it, referring back to the cancellation policy. I did explain that I would be involving my credit card company to dispute the full charge as well as write an honest review, since we tried cancelling many times within the cancellation policy. Instead of doing the right thing, she stated "Please note, threatening to harm our business with a false review disqualifies you from receiving a full refund regardless of whether it gets booked, so I do not recommend taking that action." Following these communications, I received 2 more calls from the staff "returning my calls" from weeks prior...each time I re-explained what happened and pleaded for them to do the right thing. At this point, we've been fully credited by our credit card company and I'm summarizing what happened to us in detail so you are fully aware with who you are booking with. Rest assured nothing written here is falsified and I'm only highlighting the "customer service" behind this company. I have full receipts of everything, in case anyone from this company tries to say anything to the contrary. As painful as it was to have to cancel this very important trip, the owners of this location did nothing to sympathize with our situation, let alone take ownership for their flawed phone system and their overall lack of organization/customer service, and all over $200 (total reservation was $400). Please don't book with this company, as our friends were very happy booking elsewhere for their stays.

Our room was so cozy and our beds were perfect and comfortable. The decor was really nice. In the morning, we woke up to snow, and the same gal that checked us in told us she cleaned the snow off our car once and then proceeded to clear my car off again for us. I have never experienced such great hospitality at a motel/hotel, and I travel quite a bit. The girls and I went in for the continental breakfast...they had small milk bottles, Tropicana oj, muffins, bagels, granola bars, bread, and coffee. This place was fantastic and affordable, I would definitely go back.

First, let me give the positive about this establishment. The location with respect to Sleeping…read moreBear Dunes is just about perfect. But, unfortunately, that's about where it ends. The place is not really family friendly. It is a shrine to lesbians which, in any other respect, is fine, but I'm just looking for a place to sleep. I'm not looking for some sexual enlightenment in an overnight stay. There is a "community" area where there is a shared refrigerator, stove, games, books, and such. It is nice enough, but it isn't appropriate for the "community". The books there are pretty graphic, including information on fisting. Again, I don't care where you put your fist, but it isn't something I need to explain to my three and six year old. But, the worst part of the stay was the bedding. It hadn't been cleaned from the people who stayed there last. The sheets were full of sand and an aerosol can of sun screen rolled out from underneath the blanket. This is simply unacceptable. This is a situation where they are trying to cut corners, take advantage of people, and save time and money at my expense. Absolutely disgusting. Now, the reader is probably thinking, "Why in the world didn't you get up and get the heck out of there?" Well, we got in late, and it goes back to the three and six year olds mentioned above. By the time we figured out the bed was filthy, our kids were sound asleep. So, you have to pick your poison in that situation. Either wake the kids and try to find another place in the middle of the night or endure the unendurable. We went with the latter. After being informed, the owner simply said, "I'm sorry. Thank you for letting me know." Later on in the day, she sent an email saying she would reduce our charge by $50, bringing the price of the night's stay to $106. I appreciate the reduction, but who would pay $106 going in if you knew the bedding would not be changed? If you're really big into lesbianism and different acts you can perform on each other, and don't mind filthy beds, this could be your place. Otherwise, I'd avoid it and look elsewhere.

I love the ladies at the Duneswood!…read more The Duneswood is a small, privately owned 'resort' (think: motel). This is not the Hilton. It is a step up from camping or renting a cottage, but everything is clean and well maintained. The owners are kind and attentive. The rooms are small, modest ...and THEMED! I believe it used to be a women's only resort before it was open to anyone, so each room has a fem-theme -- cowgirls, chakra, etc. The common room has photos of influential women through history, feminist literature, and all six seasons of the L-word on DVD. Out back, the owners have spent a lot of time cultivating a beautiful garden, there's a patio table, twinkling lights, and a fire pit that begs to be enjoyed. We've come the last two years with a group of women for a bike trip, and we rent out a whole wing of rooms. It is perfect! The location of the Duneswood -- nestled into Sleeping Bear Park -- makes it easy to get on the paved trail and do some easy riding north (or tougher riding south). It's a quick walk to the dune clime, a smooth bike ride to Art's Tavern, and Traverse is an easy day trip. This year, we kayaked the Crystal river, which was so lovely. This is a great place for couples and friends. I'd like to come back in the winter for cross country skiing!
