My wife and I were married at the Society Room in Hartford, CT and had our cake make by Creative Cakes by Donna. We both went in to try various cakes and frostings and pretty much loved every option. However, since we had a springtime wedding, we chose the Strawberry Shortcake (Lemon Cake with Strawberry Cream frosting). It was amazing and everyone of our guests loved it. My favorite was what I call the Pumpkin Spice cake. To my surprise, my wife had gotten me a small Pumpkin Spice cake as a wedding gift and it was so good that here I am a year and a half after our wedding ordering another one. I can't wait till the weekend! Also, I am very surprised to see that this company does not have excellent reviews! Donna was a joy to work with. She is a true professional. You can tell why she is such a trusted person when it comes to wedding cakes. She was easy to communicate with and was one of the venue's preferred vendors and you can tell why from the taste of the cake and the process that went into getting it made. She gave us plenty of options to choose from. The cake tasting was a lot of fun. She gave us several different cake and filling flavors to take home and try. Everything was customizable and delicious. Our cake was absolutely beautiful! Donna was very accommodating when scheduling our tasting. We ended up being an hour late due to scheduling issues on our end but she was so nice to us still and let us enjoy our cake tasting. We chose a chocolate mousse chambord with fresh raspberries. It was so delicious our guests are still raving about it! Donna put fresh cut flowers on our cake as well. Only issue was that it was an additional cost to our already included cake package with our venue (if we paid out of pocket it would've been over $300!!) Originally Donna told us $20 but she actually charged us $26 and not a huge deal price wise but kind of weird how the price changed randomly. read more

I cannot begin to express my gratitude and pleasure with Donna and her work. She was easy to correspond with and very responsive. Every single cake I sampled was delicious. I chose an almond cake with coconut frosting. As you can see in the photo the cake is gorgeous. The cake was delicious and I received many compliments from guests! She included 6 complimentary gluten free cupcakes which was beyond kind of her. My groom and other guests have celiac, they all ate their cupcakes without any issue! This was one of the worse wedding vendor my family dealt with for my daughter's wedding. My daughter and I spent over an hour designing a custom wedding cake. What was delivered to the reception was a cake nothing like what was designed. My daughter phoned her and she denied ever helping design her cake, but we had copies of the design on our cellphones. She delivered the wrong cake late, it was the wrong size and flavor. To ask for custom colors and flavor and get a stale, white cake is unacceptable. We had to use Donna as part of of contract for our wedding. The cake itself was delicious and in no point do I question her baking skills. Our issue was the actual presentation of the cake. We specifically drove down several months before our wedding and sat down with Donna to talk about the design of the cake. Even with our effort, Donna had no clue the week before what she was suppose to do and the cake did not come out at all how we wanted. Only gave 2 stars on her "educating" me the difference between buttercream and fondant wedding cake. She was recommended by my venue I checked her website for a bit and called to get more info. This woman has many reviews on wedding boards commenting on her poor customer service. She is extremely rude. Telling me how "unprepared" I was to call and should do more research before calling. The cake was included in our contract with where we got married, so we assumed she would be great. Much like the other comments on here, the biggest problem we had with this place was how we were treated. We were 100% sure that we wanted cupcakes, and despite leading off with this were made to defend ourselves multiple times. I'm surprised at all the customer service/relations complaints. We had top notch experience in that regard, from initial phone call to tastings to delivery. They are busy, and you can't expect gobs of time foisted on you. The cake designs, options, and creativity is first rate. The flavor selections are numerous and in my wedding experience, way better than average. The flavors are a little muted, but good, ie the raspberries in our cake were fresh raspberries. The cake itself is somewhat dense, but moist and good. However - The reason we're not giving 5 stars is the icing. While the primary function of icing on a wedding cake is decoration and presentation, (And they do this well) the "mouse" tastes just like the icing with flavorings. And the buttercream has no butter in it, it tastes and feels like a shortening frosting. Think whoopee pie filling, but lighter and Crisco type oilier. This is ok in small doses, but if you have a hefty serving, the icing starts to bring down the experience, and it should be delectable. I used creative cakes by donna as my cake vendor for my wedding at belle terrace in avon ct. When my husband and I went to her shop in haddam for a cake tasting she presented us with delicious cakes, fillings, and designs. we chose a vanilla cake with an almond filling. We spent an hour and a half choosing the decorations for our cake and explaining our theme and colors to her. When the cake arrived on my wedding day we were in shock ... it was a plain 3 tier cake, no decorations at all, and some wilted dirty flowers as the cake topper. When we cut the cake it was a marble cake with butter cream frosting... when we tasted the cake it was try and tasted like it had freezer burn. I am a baker and cake decorator myself and everyone was expecting a great cake which i trusted donna with..so all the guests actually mentioned how awful the cake was and how we should not save the cake topper for our one year to prevent food poisoning because everyone was afraid to eat it on the day of... long story short dont leave your most special day in the hands of "CREATIVE CAKES BY DONNA" when i called her to ask her why my cake seemed like something she had made a year ago and kept in the freezer and forgot to decorate she offered me a gift card and apologized ... i would never go back to her for anything important however i gave her the benefit of the doubt and appreciated the gesture ... well a month and a half has gone by and there is no gift card.. which is fine but really donna? its the least you could have done!!! read more

We used her because she was part of a package with our wedding venue. When we showed up to our cake tasting she was nothing but rude. She had no interest in talking to us or helping in any way. All she said was "did you have a chance to look at my cakes online?" Then pulled up a slideshow on her computer, insisting that we just pick one of the cakes from her image gallery. She had and attitude like she was too busy to give us the time of day or let us come up with our own ideas. The one thing that I wanted was sort of a "ruffle" design on my cake. She was snotty when told me it couldn't be done with buttercream, which was what was included in my package. (though I did research it online beforehand and found instances of other bakers doing it). All she had to say was "we could do that but we would have to charge for fondant" or something along those lines and we would have just said yes or no. We told her our colors were teal and pink, she told us teal makes buttercream look ugly and yellow. Maybe if you're willing to drop thousands on a fancy custom wedding cake she'll be a little nicer. But it seems if you are trying to spend a more reasonable amount of money she thinks she's too good to work with you. All she did was brag about how good her cakes were, if only her attitude was that good! I recommended to my venue that they reconsider working with her. I truly feel Yelp has allowed someone to sabotage this business . I chose my daughter's cake for her July 15 wedding in New Canaan. I insisted that we serve cake besides the Salem ice cream . Yes we had Salem ice cream and a three tier wedding cake delivered to the Waveny house . The cake was great! I ate four slices and the guests comments were nothing but complimentary. Donna was professional, engaging and helpful in the selection of the cake flavor . I weigh 96 ponds and can afford to indulge in several slices of cake . While searching for a cake vendor several of the local wedding venues use Donna'/ services . I could have used a Stamford bakery or a Westchester bakery . I wanted Donn to design my child's cake as soon as I walked into her shop last April 2016. I happen to be a baker and also lived down the street from Bechu and Le Norte in Paris . Two different bakeries but both with exceptional products . I ignored the Yelp reviews . There are several restaurants in Old Saybrook with raves reviews for restaurants that are awful and now shuttered . Just shows you can't trust Yelp. The cake we selected was moist, delicious and beautiful. Waveny house has no air conditioning so Donna suggested we use a buttercream frosting to hold up in the weather . read more

WHAT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! First, our tasting was ackward and we were shocked at how poor Donna's customer service skills are...she was so rude and did not listen to what we were saying. She has a terrible attitude. We decided to bite the bullet and go with her cake anyway, because it was included in our package at our venue. The day of the wedding, we were SHOCKED to see that the cake was NOT anything like we discussed! The design was wrong, and the flavors were wrong. To make matters worst, the cake didn't even taste good! It had a freezer burn taste and the "mousse" on the inside was cheap cool whip. I was introduced to Creative Cakes by Donna at a Bridal Fair and what I tasted there was very good so I ordered my wedding cake from here. My fiance and I went for a cake tasting here and again it tasted very very good. But when we got the actual wedding cake, my husband and I thought the cake tasted rather ordinary and we even wondered if we got the wrong cake. I will say that the cake looked beautiful and I will give them credit for that, however, I went with this business and was willing to pay their prices because I wanted a beautiful cake that tasted delicuous too. I thought we were going to get that but what we got was a rather ordinary tasting cake basically like a Big Y tasting cake. In addition, a few guests made comments about the frosting tasting like sugar & whipped cream....we ordered a butter cream frosting. My wife and I went to Donna because she came highly recommended. We were told her cakes were beautiful and tasty. This may be true, however, Donna is unfortunately racist. From the moment we walked through those doors, Donna kept coming at us with comments and remarks in regards to our race. As a black man, I am absolutely tired of the 21st century feeling like the 19th century. First, she assumed we could not afford the cake my wife wanted and started showing us lesser valued cakes. Then, she makes a comment about my 17 month old daughter and her race. WTF!? What was mind boggling is that every time she said something in regards to race, she acted like there was nothing wrong with it. Maybe being all the way in Haddam, CT got Donna a little confused about what to and not say to customers. I'm quite sure some people will read this post and think "whatever". However, if you are black, you have no business going to Donna and supporting her business.
