Lemon Pepper Grilled Rainbow Trout with Steamed Broccoli and Carrots
MaryLinda W.

After hurricane Helene washed away part of I-40, we went through West Virginia on our way to South Carolina. When we stopped driving after work, Cracker Barrel seemed the best place to get some vegetables with our meal and I was not disappointed. My original idea was to get a vegetable plate but Hubby ordered the grilled rainbow trout and it sounded so good I changed my mind! He had two pieces with macaroni and cheese and green beans, while I had one piece of trout with steamed broccoli and carrots. Our server told us that the one piece trout meal is being discontinued but it was still available that night. Also she wasn't sure if they had any broccoli besides the broccoli casserole, but she found some for me. We both enjoyed our grilled trout and I got some of the vegetables that I wanted. We also tried out, and were pleased with, the new option to pay at the table with a QR code and skip the line at the register.

Fried stuff......fries, chicken, sirloin tips and shrimp

On our long road trip from Toronto to South Carolina, we stopped in West Virginia and lunched at the Cracker Barrel. Super friendly staff and attached to the cutest, well stocked souvenir shop! The menu was extensive with amazing items! We did find the food a bit 'cafeteria like', being a bit sloppy, salty and mushy. Some things overcooked and some things undercooked. I'd go more for the store than the food. A good experience but not a repeat visit.

Yelp 100 - #11 March 2023 Cracker Barrel never disappoints. I enjoy their Grandma's Sampler because it comes with two pancakes and your choice of bacon, sausage, and country or honey ham. Or you can just have three servings of the same meat if you wish. Cracker Barrel has added a few more items to their menu such as different adult beverages and yummy looking desserts. Service Our server had three stars and she was very attentive and friendlily. She checked in on us and also provided informational about their new mobile pay options.

The food was terrible overcooked burnt biscuits hash brown casserole was soggy and mushy not at all like it is supposed to be. Also the restaurant was cold as heck

They advertised 4 pieces of bone in chicken dinner...this is what I got...sad very sad

They offer a nationally acclaimed menu that's been featured on NPR, Southern Living Magazine and even the ACC Network. They offer their own parking lot in the rear A huge rarity in a college area. It was clean and maintained. It was a treat to meet the owner in front of the tavern tending to landscaping needs. The historic homes facade presents beautifully. There is also outdoor seating. Our party of seven enjoyed a Sunday brunch while knowing little about the establishment. We were promptly greeted with a smile and menus and seated on the front room. Each of the four interior rooms has a fireplace and nostalgic photos adorn the walls. They also have a small bar with a focus on bourbon. The menu had one hit after another with authentic Southern cooking. The description calls it a "Traditional Regional Farmers Menu."No question the fried chicken is the hero. Five out of seven got the fried chicken. Others the chili and meatloaf. A plate of biscuits and cornbread were placed on the table after drinks placed. The history of the tavern on the menu is worthy of your time. The owner, originally from Blacksburg moved from California to restore for his own home. Later opening the restaurant. His goal to keep the structure original and true to purpose as a tavern. The owner himself comes from a family of tavern proprietors. I digress too long! The FOOD ALREADY!!! Well as you have probably already guessed it was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Every main, every side was a home run. From the mash potatoes & gravy to the macaroni & cheese, backed apples and green beans, to the rarely found succotash. All fabulous! Only starter was ham biscuits which were good. Mains of chili and meatloaf strong. But it was the fried chicken that brings local and tourist alike in the door. The chicken was cooked up to perfection and deliciously moist The breading was exceptional as well with no dripping grease and a medium crispy finish. The only desert ordered was the brownie & ice-cream. So yummy! The owner Daniel checked in on us before departing which made our experience even more special. The Blacksburg Tavern is a Southwestern Virginia gem that's a must to dine at. Checkout was efficient and prices affordable for large quality dishes. I will return later this year and hope to catch live music. Highly recommend.

The gentleman at the counter that runs the place made everyone inside feel like an old friend and the food was delivered to the table promptly. Plenty of room inside, too. I had the Thursday special: Deep-fried smothered pork chop with 2 sides and choice of bread. I chose mac n cheese, cooked cabbage, and cornbread. Folks, I think I heard the angels singing when I took the first bite. Not even joking, this place is the real deal for some good ol comfort food. I seriously had to force myself to slow down so I could savour every last bite. I don't usually have dessert, but the food was so good I had to try it. On the suggestion of the owner I had the Reese's peanut butter cake, which was every bit as delicious as the meal. This is now my favorite place to eat in the area and I'll definitely return!

As I'm typing my review, I note that I've been ignored here and I'm not the only one. A long wait for the owner to come downstairs from making a call to provide the Guest WiFi. A table of 2 that came in after me got their food before mine, while I was sitting twiddling my thumbs with nothing to do. The lady who took my order came by exactly once, to deliver my check. No offer of a water refill. After waiting a long time she finally came back and asked if I want dessert, but left without taking my order or hearing my question (wine cake?). She is responsible for this bad review and losing more business from me and other customers who also were sitting and waiting. "Have you ever waited tables before?" No, but I've had great service at many places, and this wasn't it. Unfortunately that's where I'm setting it: Don't reward bad service with your money.

Such a good selection of sandwiches, salads and pizza. We got an order of onion rings to start off with. They were delicious with there house sauce. I ordered Camp Creek Club with house made chips. It was on toasted sourdough bread with a hearty helping of ham, turkey, crisp bacon, lettuce and thick slices of tomato (I opted to leave off the cheese and mayo). The Ham and Turkey were not deli meat but actual pieces of sliced ham and turkey! My husband ordered The Nate which is a fried bologna sandwich. It came with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard. The sandwiches were huge and very good!. He finished half of my half and I got the other half to take home for dinner. We had to save some room for the ice cream. Half of the restaurant is the diner and the other was ice cream and cake. There was plenty of choices of both! It was good creamy ice cream. Annie, our server was wonderful and the young man at the ice cream side was so delightful. It was very clean inside and out. This was a definite good lunch stop!

Not…read moreonly do you get to walk around and enjoy various local artists work, some artists who are actively working (we got to watch glass blowing), but the food was some of the best we had on our trip! My fiance got the Reuben sandwich and the peanut butter pie. Both were absolutely five star! The Reuben had plenty on it and was nicely balanced. The onion rings felt fresh and were dipped in a really delicious batter. As you can see, the peanut butter pie was huge, creamy, and really delicious with a good balance of cream cheese flavor. The chicken pot pie did not disappoint either! It was a bowl of the creamy chicken mixture with a ridiculous amount of actual chicken in it (both light and dark meat). It was topped by a layer of some flaky and delicious pastry. There was just enough of everything, though. It was a lot to eat, and I was unable to finish it all. The tomato cucumber salad was okay, I tend to not like my vegetables as marinated as they were, but it still had good taste. The biggest disappointment was the creme brulee. Don't get me wrong, it tasted amazing and came out perfectly bruleed! But it was the same price as the peanut butter pie, and was extremely misleading and how much was actually there. When looking at the dish it was served in, the entire bottom. Half of the dish was ceramic with a very narrow full to actually place anything in. In the end, I think I got about half the amount of creme that I expected. It did not feel like it was worth the money, so I would not recommend ordering it. That being said, we will definitely make a point of stopping here to eat on every trip in the future, though we might just both end up with peanut butter pie!!
