Such loving care. Arrived for dinner around 5 with RV in tow. Sudden mechanical issue when parking. Caught the manager while he was leaving at the end of his shift to explain. Not only was he kind and understanding, he was more than accommodating, trying to trouble shoot, got under the hood, stayed with us until a tow truck arrived, and made sure we got a meal and were comfortable several HOURS after his shift ended. The staff did not rush even though it was closing time by the time our crazy unexpected situation was resolved. All of this for strangers. We were very touched and appreciative. The food was very good. The server was pleasant but not very proficient. She forgot my husband's toast and didn't seem all that motivated to correct that. She forgot my whipped butter, said she would get it but forgot it again. By then I had eaten half of my French toast, so when she offered to go get it again I told her not to bother. Being from Southern California there aren't any Cracker Barrel near me. I love the country small town feel of the restaurant and country store. Being on this extended work trip I've had CB a few times but my last visit was my favorite. Our server Chris was so attentive to our needs and gave great recommendations. She was definitely on her A game and hope management value her work ethic. The food was very good. The bacon was extremely crispy and delicious. The fruit was fresh and sweet. And Chris brought me turkey gravy with no questions asked. Got a chicken pot pie to go and that was delicious as well (would have liked a little more chicken). Chris also got us to go cups for our drinks. When in the south Cracker Barrel is a must. It just tastes better there. Had the sirloin steak, green beans, Mac and cheese and a sweet potato. I was happy that they would serve the potato to me with just butter on it. Other items at the table- country fried turkey, pot roast and ham steak. Everything was good. When you stay at the Red Roof Inn and Suites here in Abingdon, Virginia, chances are you will eat here at this here Cracker Barrell next door. I'm one of the those hotel guests that apparently did during my stay here in the Abingdon area on March 2019. My time here at Cracker Barrell was short and sweet. I got to meet up with a friend of mine whom I had known for years, but only got to meet up recently because it was as close to her home (1 1/2 hour drive) as it could be. Cracker Barrell is known for their southern cooking. Apparently, they are big on breakfast items, especially when they give you the breakfast menu at 6pm. I don't know though, breakfast seemed more legit than the lunch and dinner stuff they had online. We both arrived here around 6:15pm an the place was kind of crowded. It certainly was a cultural shock to me, considering that I am visiting from Honolulu, HI. It's nice to see different things though. With that said, the experience here was pretty good and I pretty much blended in with the surroundings. Cracker Barrell is probably the only restaurant that has a gift shop attached to it. Correct me if I am wrong. Probably for the tourists. The overall experience here at Cracker Barrell in Abingdon, VA was short, simple, and sweet. I wanted for my friend to arrive and park before we headed on in. The ambiance of our time here was kind of not quiet, but at the same time, it was not loud enough to where we had to talk above the noise. We were seated rather quickly, which was rather good. We didn't want to wait too long, so it was brief. It just seemed like a good place to go to without having to wander off too far outside the city of Abingdon. For the most part though, we ended up hanging out here for about 45 minutes before we parted ways. Breakfast food for dinner seemed like a genius concept, but I guess I enjoy breakfast food more than some dinner entrees out there these days. The restaurant itself was busy, with people eating and leaving, but clean and very southern like, especially with the décor. This Cracker Barrell Old Country Store is located at 909 Empire Drive SW in Abingdon, Virginia. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing. They also gladly accepts cash as well. As I was staying next door to the Cracker Barrell at the Red Roof Inn, I pretty much walked over. They have a generous helping of parking stalls for anyone and everyone who wishes to stop in and have a bite to eat and drink. Best bet would be to rent a car and get here, if traveling from a commercial regional airport. The public transportation option services multiple towns including Abingdon, but I don't know if it does stop remotely close to this side of Abingdon. If nothing else, hopefully uber and lyft operate near or in Abingdon. During my stay here, I ordered the smokehouse breakfast, which consisted of scrambled eggs, couple of sausages, and I believe it was grits or something like that. Lol. I ended up having a diet soda as well to compliment the meal. While the meal was pretty good, I probably think that the serving size is a bit skimpy and the price offered. Prices here are relatively cheap here, although I'm not a resident in the area. For the most part though, the experience was enjoyable since I got to meet my friend for the first time in a while. Cracker Barrell is pretty good, although I should have asked for the dinner menu. There's always next time, I guess. Still okay. 3.5 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the service. 3.5 stars for the food. It is what it is. So sad to see our Cracker Barrels going down hill since Covid. This one was so bad. The restaurant is even looking rough. Most all the tables are worn to the bare wood. It needs an update. I ordered catfish. First order was raw down one entire side of the fish. The second order came out and my first bite had two bones. The manager said it was processed fish (not sure that helped), and it would be gristle rather than bone. Anyway, I couldn't eat at this point. They did remove it from our bill. The waitress and staff were very nice. This CB used to be amazingly good. The menu changes recently haven't helped any of the restaurants, but food quality going down is the real demise. read more

Both times we have been the food has been good but the service is kind of slow. We have enjoyed our visits though.

We ordered chef salads which is our usual go to for a later supper. It was full of iceberg lettuce, no cheese and no croutons. Previous times we had ordered you would get a nice portion of ham and turkey. Not so today. Had to come home and substitute spring mix for iceberg, add cheese and croutons. Yes, I'm a fan of Cracker Barrels where I have seldom had anything I didn't like. There were a number of us there at a post-funeral get-together. I decided to try the new fried chicken and I really don't recommend it. The breading was heavy, thick, and dried out. I have always thought CB should sell fried chicken, but this recipe (at least at this location) needs tweaking. Our waitress did a nice job of taking care of a large crowd. I am sorry I didn't get her name, but this was one of those rare occasions when I didn't pay the tab, so I can't compliment her by name. I will be seen again at Cracker Barrels, but will order something else. read more

I took a Persian to a Cracker Barrel. You know this boy had a culture shock! He loved it though and that set the trend for our trip down to Tennessee. Southern food is what I wanted to give him the experience of and as expected -- Cracker Barrel delivered. Our server rolled over with her larger than life flaming red hair and thick accident welcomed us and proudly announced that she had made the sweet tea just a few minutes earlier, and thought that would be a perfect starter for our breakfast. I begged to differ as I am not one who is huge on sweet tea. To be honest, no one in my family is really huge on it. My mom calls it liquid diabetes, and insists that half sweet and half unsweet is sooo much better. Meh, we got the sweet tea and after a few sips my fiance was not sold on it either. It just wasn't that good. I am not saying that there hasn't been sweet tea I've enjoyed, but this was even too sweet for my own taste. For our breakfast -- I ordered the egg beaters, turkey bacon, and a side of their seasonal fruit that came with pineapple, blueberries, and grapes. I was content. Sami ordered the whole damn menu. He got pancakes, sausage, fried ham, baked apples, bacon, eggs, grits,biscuits and gravy, and an orange juice. He finished everything. The only thing he did not like were the grits. After dumping salt and butter in it, he thought they were better. Of course... For a fairly standardized chain with a fairly standardized menu, individual Cracker Barrels can vary quite a bit. The folks here are nice, even helpful; the ladies in the gift store went to some pains to find me "Virginia" postcards -- but there were only four such postcards, none of local sights like the renowned Barter Theater. Waitresses are nice, but face it -- this part of Appalachia is not an area where waitstaff love to bustle around to show their efficiency. (Even the supposedly deliberate Brigs chain in Durham and the rest of the Triangle is snappier than CB/Abingdon.) The food, when it came, was on the whole good, but all too often underwhelming. I liked the "popcorn" okra and the barbecued beans were good but should have been warmer, and the biscuits were too cool as well. What happens to cooled-off biscuits? They get tough and dry. The big disappointment was the "Sawmill Gravy" to accompany biscuits or "chicken-fried" meats. Real Sawmill is made up of cornmeal rather than wheat flour. (The closest flour-based equivalent is usually called "cream gravy," or "sausage gravy" if ground sausage bits and sausage drippin's are worked inside). This one tasted like nothing; they should call it "SawDUST Gravy." When anyone can go to any area supermarket and walk out with several superior mixes for biscuit gravy -- black pepper, pepper-free and so on -- Cracker Barrel has no business being proud of their stuff. Even Shoney's has better gravy, and it is all pre-made! A little more efficiency would impress relocating Yankees and those enroute to the NASCAR track in Bristol; tastier, warmer food would make this a much more desirable place to eat. (Part of that is simply honoring the basics, like getting the biscuits from the oven to the table without enough lag in between to cool them off.) And by the way, has anyone thought to replace those grungy golf-tee jumping games on the tables since Clinton was President?? Cracker Barrel in Abingdon is not fine enough to be worth going out of the way for. The best part for us was that relatives paid the bill! read more

The experience was fine, as my timing for a meal placed constraints on my choices and desire to support local businesses while on business travel. I had the chicken and dumplings. The quality had a large chain appeal. I did find the entrance a bit tricky to find from the freeway exit; so be on the lookout if this is your fancy. Has decent food that is prepared very quickly. Nice country-style setting with kerosene lamps and a little, but overpriced, trinket store in the front. However, it's always crowded, all the time. It's so crowded that they make you stand in front of everyone to guilt them into leaving (they call it "staging") so when they tell you your table is ready, it really isn't. Normally love Cracker Barrel and their staff usually does a great job. However, if Cracker Barrel is going to offer "to go" items, it needs to step up and be both timely and accurate on the food ordered. I recently ordered at this Cracker Barrel two grilled chicken salads and when I got to my hotel, realized the salad had NO chicken added. I called the restaurant and all I got was a "sorry". Servers are friendly, and are pretty nearby if you need something. The Coca Cola Cake is the best cake you will ever eat in your life. Perfect chocolate flavor, moist but not too moist, and served with good vanilla ice cream. They have a good variety of Southern style food. Something for everyone. The wait to be seated can take a while though, but if you like Southern food it's worth it. read more
