Groppi Food Market expecting to grab a sandwich. Somehow, about 30 seconds later, I felt like I had accidentally wandered into a tiny neighborhood market somewhere in Italy. This place has character. Everything feels old-school in the best possible way--beautifully organized produce, fresh meats, Italian sausages (including garlic Italian sausage and something appropriately called the "Angry Italian"), cheeses, olive oils, wines, prepared foods, and enough little discoveries on the shelves to make you forget you originally came in for lunch. Then there's the deli. The gentleman making sandwiches looked like he had stepped directly out of a 1920s movie: tall, slender, full mustache, old-school cap--the whole look. I half expected him to hand me my sandwich and then go outside and start a Model T. But beyond the style, he was incredibly welcoming, courteous, and genuinely added to the charm of the place. I ordered the turkey panini and had them make it spicy. Fantastic. The bread was perfectly toasted--crisp on the outside without being destroyed by the panini press--and the sandwich itself was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I wanted. But here's where Groppi really got me. I took my sandwich and a bottle of San Pellegrino out to their little garden/patio area. It was one of those perfect Milwaukee fall afternoons: sweater weather, leaves falling from the trees, sunshine coming through the branches, and I'm sitting there eating this ridiculously good Italian sandwich thinking, Where has this place been hiding? They even have a bar in the back where you can enjoy your sandwich with a glass of wine, do a wine tasting, or grab another drink. They also make hot prepared foods--including mac and cheese and other meals you can take home--so this isn't just a deli. It's part neighborhood grocery store, part Italian market, part deli, part bar, and part little neighborhood escape. You can come here to grocery shop. You can come for fresh meat and sausage. You can grab a sandwich. You can sit outside with lunch. You can have a glass of wine. Or, apparently, you can walk in for a sandwich and spend the next hour pretending you're on vacation in a tiny Italian neighborhood. Absolutely loved this place. One of those Milwaukee gems that makes exploring the city worth it.

Santa Fe and Cubano are my two favorites. They are huge, so if you're not seriously hungry get the half and you'll be plenty full. They also have a wine bar in the back with a nice tap list of beers. There is a killer patio to hang out in, sip on your wine/beer as you savor your panini. You definitely feel like you're in Italy when you step into this market. Definitely one of the highlights when visiting the Bay View neighborhood.

My mom and I stopped by for lunch on Monday of last week because I had a CityTin to use. Well it was real embarrassing to be accused of trying to cheat the system for $10 when it was time to pay the bill. The bartender who was ironically talking to another patron about Catholic school, accused me of being handed a LuLu CityTin coaster as I sat down. When I told her I walked in with it and that's why we came, she professed that it was an old one and expired. She eventually checked with someone in the back and gave us the discount, but neither of us will be back. The food isn't astounding & I can get their pie at another location.

Today I tried a new coffee today, the cherry cola cooler, I cannot say I recommend. It's made with housemade syrup, it really taste like as if you got a cherry coke, and a coffee and mixed it together. The coffee in general I'd say is not a sweet treat. The gluten free chocolate chip cookie, reminded me of their chocolate scone, it was soft, tasted great. The scone was so pretty and well balanced, loved that I got the last one in the showcase. The chilaquiles were a bit disappointing. Presentation was wonderful, and proportions were very good. But the tortillas were already all soft and soggy on arrival, in red sause. Chilequiles is really more of a building board, pick the way you want your eggs, pick the sauce (red or green) pick your protein. I was asked how I wanted my eggs, but not the other things. With my mind in a few directions it didn't come to me until it was already served. Normally I'd get green sauce and chicken for protein. At other restaurants there usually beans and rice but I didn't not expect that here, which it wasn't. The eggs were amazing, clearly amazing quality-the yolk a deep orange. My friend got the hoppei poppei, it seemed like it was really met to her liking-light cheese in the eggs, and the summer sausage and interesting but tasty addition for breakfast. The cafe closes at 2:00, but kitchen closes at 1:00. The hot menu items are brought out to you. Your name is called out for drinks. Bakery items are handed directly to you immediately after purchase at register. Bathroom is so pretty, perfect for a quick mirror picture. And exceptionally clean. The changing table isn't weirdly low!

I never had a chance to try the macarons, and honestly only found this one because the place that I normally get cinnamon rolls from when I went to treat myself was closed for a holiday break, so I decided to use yelp and branch out and find something new. I was not disappointed! I also tried a ham and cheese, croissant, which was delicious, but I will definitely be back for the cinnamon rolls. They also sell day old cinnamon rolls at a discounted rate, and I am eager to try those as well, because I love the idea of food not going to waste, saving money, and I heat up my cinnamon rolls anyway so I bet it would still be delicious! If not, I am happy to pay full price for the fresh kind, especially knowing that the bakery helps support community members with food insecurity (see photo). They have a sourdough membership, and even though I make my own sourdough (with mixed results), I believe I will try this just so that I can experience all the different varieties they create. I think it will be fun to have something like this to look forward to a couple times a month.

First and foremost, I am big on Parisian pastries especially chocolate croissants. My fiancée told…read moreme I had to try ham rolls on Sundays "because it is a Wisconsin tradition". So we came here one Sunday and got a pound of ham, cheddar cheese and onion rolls. We also had one chocolate croissant and a sprinkled donut for some sweetness in our lives. When we got home she put together these sacred traditions like it was Christmas morning and I had to patiently wait to be told to dig in. Well, not only did I dig in but the ROLLS--they were so crunchy on the outside with the perfect amount of onion and soft/chewy on inside. It went so well with the ham and cheddar that I literally drooled after my first bite for a second. I only use one piece of cheese for two slices of ham, I found that while I might be marrying a Cheese Head, I am slowly becoming one and two was too many. I was also told that it was a cardinal sin to put my BBQ kettle chips in my roll for extra crunch and favor. It didn't need it but I thought why not put everything on my plate together. I'd go back just for the ham rolls on Sunday--if my fiancée would let me lol. The pastries though? The croissant was almost spot on to the ones we had in Paris. I could only tell a slight difference in the layers and butter but it isn't important. This is a gem of a place and while it takes a minute to order and go--it's TOTALLY WORTH IT!
