Don't trust Cox with your data
I have to share this story of how COX cable lost years' worth of emails. Disclaimer - I do not have a COX account nor do I work for any competitor of theirs. When I visit my elderly mother, I always try and give her a hand with any computer issues she has. While viewing her email, I noticed that there was nothing older than November of 2022. She has had the same email for over 10 years and I've helped her with it numerous times, so I was concerned about this. At first, I thought we were doing something wrong or didn't fully understand the email interface settings. I called COX tech support number and spoke with a friendly person who tried to help me. I explained that we couldn't see any older emails and she tried to search for an answer. While trying different things I found an email properties display. It listed the current number of emails in the inbox as 27. I was confused and relayed this to the tech support person. After a pause, she said she was told that there were had been problems and some people would have lost any emails older than the first of November. Frankly I didn't know what to say. I asked other questions and was told there was no way to recover the lost emails and that COX did not notify anyone of the incident.
Having worked in the IT industry my entire career, this is unacceptable behavior. That's the reason backups are made, disaster recovery drills are done and people trust companies to keep their data safe. Especially an internet provider!
So that's 10+ years of memories, conversations, order history, shared pictures and who knows what else. I was beyond words to express my disappointment. We discussed the steps to ensure that future emails were copied and stored locally on her computer so this wouldn't happen again and I made those changes.
But that a company that would lose your data and then not tell you about it is pretty despicable in my book. So consider yourself informed of that. read more
