Red River is a great dance hall. The live music is always good, the dance floor is almost always big enough to handle the crowd, and the beer is always ice cold. The free dance lessons from7PM-8PM Wed, Thur, Fri, and Sat are a real plus for those just getting their boots on the ground with country dancing and for those who may have gotten a little rusty. Unfortunately we had not the best experience. We were waiting to speak to a manager outside to make sure that tattoos that my husband had were approved to get in. However, I was curious about the rules and regulations and attire for this place. I was met with the most disrespectful attitude, belittling my question and even looking bothered that I asked. This was so upsetting to experience. I do not believe I have ever been treated in such a way in any situation I have been in. What happened to getting out and having fun? We rarely go out. Everything in Texas is bigger and better! This couldn't be truer at Cowboys Red River dance hall! This place was rockin till 3AM. We had a blasts dancing, drinking and singing our hearts out! Bar tending service was spot on! And the vibe was lively. My only critique would be to tell the dude in the bathroom selling cologne and after shave to back the hell up! We went to Red River on a weekend night and the entire place was packed with people dancing, sipping on brews, and singing along with the live entertainment. There is a large circular dance floor that allows people to dance while constantly moving throughout the place. There is a bull-riding machine, several pool tables, a few different bars to order from, and a large stage for entertainers to perform on. Red River mainly plays country music but every hour or so they will play some pop/rap songs to break up the genre a bit. Red River is a great spot to pull up your boots and start dancing! This is the largest country-dancing honky-tonk I've ever experienced. It's certainly the biggest in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. I came at 7 p.m. when the doors opened on a Saturday night. It was still sunlight outside, so it initially was so dark inside that I could barely see. It was also quite cold from the air conditioning, but that also meant I never broke a sweat like I normally do when country dancing. The are bars around the entire perimeter. The dance floor is donut-shaped with another bar and seating in the middle. The turnout for the two-step lesson was so large that the instructor had an assistant at each corner of the widespread dance floor. It didn't take long for the place to be completely full. I would estimate over a thousand people. There is no single demographic that dominates. All are welcome. The country dancing is all progressive (travelling counterclockwise), predominantly two-step and three-step (triple two-step). Some people do a progressive version of country swing. There is a live band that comes on and off throughout the night. I was so captivated by the dancing experience, that I would forget that they were there. I never noticed when the music switched back-and-forth from the band to the DJ. The band itself had a few different lead singers who took turns after breaks. I was there from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. During that time, there was only one line dance, which was Cotton-Eyed Joe. There were also a few nightclub interludes sprinkled throughout the night, including both hip-hop and techno. Overall, a nice variety for all walks of life present. After finally throwing in the towel, I enjoyed a hot dog outside from Smokin' Joe's. The place has earned its historic place on the ultimate bucket list for Dallas-Fort Worth. read more

We got the $75 birthday package on Saturday which gave us free cover and 10 drink tickets + a free bulk ride. Totally worth it! The dance floor is around a bar which was fun. No line dancing aside from a pretty bad attempt at Shivers But there were some steal circles and plenty of good dancers there which made it fun. Cowboys Red River is sort of a Dallas landmark. I consider it a cowboy club for people who aren't cowboys. Arrive early if you don't want to pay a cover (check their website) and be ready to show ID no matter your age. They have a large, free parking lot but it fills up fast (at least it does on a Friday night). They post events on facebook and there are specials on weeknights. On Friday nights, they play two step county only, with some live acts interspersed. By 10, it has pretty much switched over to club music with freestyle dancing and fake smoke. This is my go to spot for country dancing. It is reasonably priced, especially if you go before 8pm, it is a free entry. Plus they give free country dancing lessons around 7pm. It has everything you would want from my country dance hall/bar. They have two set of big bathrooms, large dance floor space, billiards, and a bull riding machine. Their service was appropriate and professional. It's not all perfect, sometimes it gets really crowded, and the people can be rude, and the place could be a little cleaner. Let me just say that my friend and I went to Red River for the first time last night. We are from Houston, so we are used to being in diverse clubs and bars. She is a black woman and I am a white woman. The men there do not take no for an answer/were harassing us all night while we waited for our friends to get there, and made many racial jokes. 99% of the people in there are white and the music mix is not good at all. Now to top it off, the old bouncer at the door is racist. My 2 friends are black men and were denied entry because they "were not in dress code and didn't have a belt buckle" Their online dresscode is "Must have sleeves No cuts No elastic waistbands or athletic type shorts No open toe shoes No team jerseys unless the team played that day" None of which were my friends breaking. When I went outside and asked their dresscode, the bouncer told me that it changes and that "they don't have to post their dress code online and it changes when they want". Needless to say, a few heated words were exchanged between the bouncers and myself. After a different bouncer than the original rechecked my friends he said that it was "just a misunderstanding". They also said my friends cargo pants looked like sweatpants, which was definitely not true. To sum up everything, this establishment is not necessarily welcoming to black people and the music is wack. save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Thanks for ruining my 1st dancing experience. I never want to come back. I (20 F) went to red River for the first time last night. I was excited, it was my first time going dancing and the atmosphere was great. I was having fun, started getting a little sweaty and went to use the restroom. I noticed the marker on my hands was smudging and starting to get messy. Considering I was wearing a brand new white tank top, I figured I don't want to get all of it off, I just don't want to stain my new white shirt, so when I was washing my hands, there was a person who worked there near the counters and she said "you shouldn't do that" so I explained to her I didn't have any intention of deceiving anyone, just so I don't stain my shirt and she didn't say anything else so I assumed she understood. I dried my hands, took two steps out the bathroom, and a bouncer stepped in front of me, asked if I had my ID, and said you're coming with me. Now at this point I'm confused. I explain to him I don't understand why I'm leaving and he completely belittles me. He asked if I understood that I was breaking the rules and I said not really, I didn't think it was that big of a deal, I only did it cuz the marks were smudging, the markings on the hands are huge anyone can clearly still see the marker on my hands, I was about to go back to the dance floor anyways. so he said "The bartender told you to stop, didn't she?" "You think just because you don't want to stain your new shirt that everyone in this room shouldn't be allowed to have fun when FDA shuts us down because of you?" Let me make it clear. I never approached a bar. I never tried to get anyone to buy me a drink. I used my ID that shows clearly I'm not 21. I was entirely sober. I went out to learn how to dance. I was dancing with my boyfriend. Got a little warm, noticed the giant M's on the back of my hands were starting to smear. Knowing how clumsy I am (there's a reason it's a new white tank top), I wanted to get the top coat off since that was the part still smudging. I expressed my intentions after the bartender told me not to and she never told me whether or not it was okay to continue like, "hey it doesn't matter why you're doing it, they won't care" then I was escorted out and they wrote my ID down on a piece of paper. It was 9:00pm. I got to dance for, maybe 45 minutes before my experience was over. And then I had an anxiety attack because I didn't understand why what I did was wrong enough to get kicked out. I'm a softy. I know I am. But I should NOT be having to leave my first dancing experience with an anxiety attack and puffy eyes. read more
