And you think you know a place, right? Anyway, I was enamored by this small ferry, which my family and I took today to get to a restaurant on the other side of the river. We pulled up and waited for the ferry to make its way across to us, and during that time, I looked up the Anderson Ferry's site to learn about its history. Did you know: * The ferry is more than 200 years old. * The first ferry was made of wood, and the paddlewheels turned as horses walked along a treadmill. * It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. * Depending on where you need to go, this ferry can be a good way to bypass traffic on the interstate. * It was once an important way for farmers to take their goods to market. There are no horses involved in the ferry nowadays. We were efficiently loaded in our cars onto the ferry, which can contain more cars that you would think. A ferry employee then went car to car for the $5 fee. You can also pay 50 cents if you want to ride along and traverse the river on foot or $1 to cross with a bike. The ferry is cash only. It took about five minutes or so to make it across, and disembarkment was also quick. It's clear that this ferry is a meaningful and important part of Northern Kentucky, which I'm happy that I now know about.

A three-day celebration includes notables such as Howard Hughes, Jimmy Doolittle, Freddie Lund, Cincinnati Air Corps Reserves and Jean Harlow. Presented by the folks at American Legacy Tours, Barons & Bikes takes riders on a trip around Newport's Historic East Row to hear tales of the Wiedeman Brewery, Mr. Kroger, and horrific tales of dismemberment at local saw mills. The Eastern Row is filled with historic, grandiose houses and Victorian-style churches. Plus the landscaping is gorgeous with greenery hanging over the streets. Photography is permitted on the tour, with the front right side being the best place for pictures. For a new tour, it's off to a great start. I would like to hear more stories about history, such as the architecture or why the East Row developed the way that it did. It would be more interesting than hearing about where the founder of the Hofbrauhaus goes to church. Also, throw in some information about the debauchery and gangsters. Yes, this company also hosts the Newport Gangster Tour, so it doesn't want to give the same information on both tours. Some overlapping wouldn't hurt though; just pick the most interesting or little-known stories. Afterwards we were dropped off at our origin at Hofbrauhaus, just in time for lunch. The pretzels and bier cheese are delicious, as was their signature Hefeweisen. One complaint though: parking. Upon arriving at Hofbrauhaus, the lot had their Valet service set up. There would be a $5.00 charge to park in a lot that is normally free. The attendant mentioned that there is always a charge on Saturdays. On a Saturday morning? Minimal people were patronizing the restaurant at this time, making Valet unnecessary. Folks who are taking the Pedal Wagon Tour should not have to pay $5.00 to park in the lot for an hour. Perhaps guests could show their receipt of ticket purchase to park for free? Cost: $20.00 per person Tour Time: 1 hour Tips: - If you must bring a purse, take a small bag. There is no where to store aside from the counter top while you pedal. - Be sure to wear sneakers. - There is a 5'3" height requirement to pedal the bike. The Pedal Wagon does have a few rider seats for short folks. At 5'7" I was having to stretch a little to reach the pedal at its lowest. - Tipping the tour guide is encouraged, so bring some cash.

Known as "Cincinnati's other abandoned subway system," Riverfront Transit Center was built in 2003…read moreunderneath Second Street and remains unused except for rare occasions. A half-mile long tunnel was originally created as a public transportation hub for visitors to the stadiums, Freedom Center, and other riverfront attractions. Despite being city property, it is normally off-limits to the public. That's a shame, because it is gorgeous and underutilized. Similar to the design plans for the unfinished 1920s Cincinnati Subway System, the Riverfront Transit Center boasts tiled walls filled with mosaics representative of the Queen City. From baseball, to stained glass windows, to cooking, and our machine tool history, the northern wall of the tunnel is covered in these Art Deco inspired murals. While they may not be made of Rookwood tile, they certainly come close as a modern equivalent. The Riverfront Transit Center is not a failed transit project; it is structurally complete but is not being used to its full potential. Currently, it could be used to decrease stadium and bus traffic along Second Street. The design is also able to support light rail if ever implemented in the area. While you may never see below the street level of the RTC, the portals to the underground hub are visible along Second Street. Just look for the futuristic glass entryways. The doors may be locked, but those dark stairwells descend into a tunnel of opportunities.
