Stopped here on our way home from the Oregon Coast. I ordered the eggs and bacon that came with a biscuit. It was fine, nothing special. Everything was cooked right but nothing stood out as being worth that extra one or two stars for me. The service and was quick and friendly. We stopped at the Cousins' Country Inn on our way through to the Oregon Coast, so logically it made sense for us to eat here at the Cousins' restaurant. They were very good at accommodating our large group of 11 and sat us in the area right near the kitchen. The food was unfortunately fairly lackluster, and their BBQ sauce was downright gross, but there were no major complaints from the group. It did take quite some time to get some food, but that's probably to be expected with such a large group. read more

Poor service, mediocre food. For instance, the tinned blue cheese dressing was as poor as the ranch, in fact nearly indistinguishable from one another. Skip this place, it caters to the overpaid union workers in the area that sit and order beer and overcooked meat. No service. Wait, worse! A server who actually argued with us, the customers, when questioned about the Bottomless Soup and Salad, which is not bottomless. We are not accustomed to waitresses arguing with us! Server 304 at 7pm this evening, Monday, apparently did not know what it meant when I said "The price is inconsequential '. She argued she did not set the prices! Oh dear. What I was explaining was that we did not care what the price was! Plus absolutely no apologies from her when we returned the first soup, but she did discuss how much she was going to charge us. My Vet buddy suggested the place as it was veteran's day and they were offering a free meal for him. Come to find out, his coffee , bacon and cheese were not included in the deal. The server slipped those prices into my bill without saying anything and I didn't want to make a seen about it, so I paid for all of it. The server also was hustling everyone to pay by credit card as I heard him fast talking the same to everyone around me. The reason is, his mobile payment system had 3 tip choices only, 18%, 24% and 30% and you were forced to select one with no other option. COUSINS' and an associated motel was a great discovery for me, that is still remembered with great fondness, about 12 years after our visit. Unless you have "fallen off of a turnip truck," many Americans know that the Columbia River Gorge is one of the most scenic spots in the United States. The great tourist attractions along the Columbia River include Multnomah Falls, Punchbowl Falls, and other waterfalls in this area. The great tourist attractions along the Columbia River also include the hike up to the top of Beacon Rock, the tour inside of Bonneville Dam, and the drive across Bridge of the Gods (with the side-attraction of getting a free autograph from Reese Witherspoon). Eventually one drives further to the east past Mount Hood, and arrives in an area that is desolate and dry. At this point, one encounters The Dalles, a city of about 14,000 residents. And in this city, one encounters the charming restaurant, COUSINS'. In front, is a life-sized statue of a cow (see my photograph). Once inside, a hostess wearing a colonial American outfit will greet you with, "Hello cousin!!!" Also inside, is a charming little gift shop with self-published stories that tell local folk lore. Some of the dining tables inside have the black and white pattern of Holstein cows (see my photos). Another dining room has a real tractor in the middle, for decoration. It is a green-colored tractor. Moreover, at one of the eating counters, milk cans are used as stools for diners (see my photo of the milk can stools). What I ordered was oysters. I got my start in liking cooked oysters, because at one point in my life, I did research on oysters and published a paper on my oyster research (see, Brody T. We spent the night at the associated motel, and we watched a video of the Cuba Gooding movie, MEN OF HONOR. You know what is most memorable about my trip to Cousins? My Condon friend and I went to The Dalles specifically to get "ethnic" food (which doesn't exist in Condon), and we ended up at Cousins because of his glowing review. And I must say, he wasn't wrong. Cousins very much reminds me of a lower grade Cracker Barrel. Very kitschy, country, down-home feeling with delicious comfort food. When you first enter, you are greeted with a restaurant store of cute knick knacks and Cousins mementos. Can't help but feel like you walked into another dimension...but in a nostalgic way if that makes sense. Because I had eaten complete unhealthy shite the last couple days, I went with a BBQ chicken salad (swapped out the ranch dressing for Italian), which was a great portion for the price. Came with a side of freshly baked bread and nicely whipped butter. I must admit that I was ogling the pies (baked fresh), but there was just no way I could do it. Clientele inside is very interesting...lots of locals but also people staying at the attached hotel. Service here is very friendly; I did not have to wait for anything. Back in 1994 I took my dad here when he came to visit. It is a drive to the Dalles from my house, 90 minutes to be exact, but since that time, we have made the drive just for dinner or lunch on many occasions. The door moos and makes various barnyard animal noises, very farmy and country motif, complete with mason jars for drinking glasses. I usually get the turkey and dressing no matter what time of year. The portions are very large and the prices very reasonable. Expect to take a box. I had the chance to try breakfast here the other day and was not disappointed. They sell these giant cinnamon rolls up front and I always think I will get one to go, but am usually too full to care on the way out. The waitress brought warm miniature ones to the table, but when I say miniature, I mean regular size. I snapped off a picture. The ham was thick and hash browns plentiful. Service was great. I have never had bad service here in all the years we have been coming in. Every time my dad comes from Kentucky for a visit, he requests a trip to the Dalles just for their pot roast. Oh, and the biscuits... I don't eat biscuits, I donate them to my husband's plate, but it was included with my breakfast and it looked so good, all it took was a pinch of it, and the feeding frenzy was on. They brought out a dish of gravy to go with it, but it was too good to cover up in the gravy, my husband said it was good on his biscuit, so we'll go with that. The chorizo skillet was very blah and had little chorizo flavor. Tip for any restaurants: if you are going to give out samples of your product please sure it representative of your best. Pretty cool looking from the outside, and old fashioned on the inside but lookout! They've got a raven haired waitress in there who tells you one price when you sit down, and another when it's time to pay. For example, ""it's happy hour so drinks and appetizers are half off." Then when it's time to pay, "oh did I say that, I meant...," manager is clueless to what is happening. I don't care for the old bait and switch. Pricey too, $21 for a steak, $8 for a bowl of beans, I wouldn't go back. Cool old wood stove, I've only seen a big one like that in one other place, the awesome steakhouse in Marysville, Montana. A few years back, my hubby and I stumbled across this place. We often take day trips to Hood River and will make the extra drive up to The Dalles for it. I don't know what it is, but I love this place. The country theme is really cute and I love that they say "Hi Cousins!" when you walk in. I love their sugar canisters because they have rainbow colored sugar crystals in lieu of actual sugar for coffee. The little touches are cute. I can only speak for the breakfast food, but I think it's great. This morning, I had the market skillet. The potatoes were really delicious and the eggs were up to par. It was served in a little skillet. My husband got the country Benedict and it was great as well. The gravy was good. Not too salty but with plenty of flavor. Biscuits are homemade and huge! Bloody Mary was good, but nothing I haven't experienced before. At $8, it could be better ($7 on Sundays) We did go to the brunch buffet once and I can say through and through that it was incredibly not worth the money. They put it in the banquet room so it just felt...I dunno, tacky. The food was stale assuming it was actually available for eating. Customer service is good.
