We went on a Sunday evening with a party of five arriving around 5pm. We were seated right away and drink orders taken. Everyone found something on the menu that was of interest: rib eye steak with potatoes lyonnaise, grilled pork chops with fries, chicken kiev with fries, grilled walleye with steamed broccoli and one of the specials pork saurkraut & dumplings. The waitress was friendly answering our questions. The offerings at the salad bar was modest but everything was fresh. The entrees arrived just as we finished the salads. I had the pork chops which were thick cut and grilled just right to be juicy. It was delicious with or without the applesauce. Based on what the others said... The steak was substantial and cooked perfectly to medium rare. It was a tiny bit tough but was delicious. The chicken was hot and buttery while the fries were plentiful, toasty and well seasoned. The walleye was fantastic. She asked for grated parmesan to season the broccoli and it was brought out very quickly despite a busy dining room. The pork was moist, tender and flavorful. With drinks (some iced tea, some alcohol), the meal was a bit over $20 per person with leftovers for the next meal. Great meal and we all agreed we would dine here again. read more

If you go out to eat in this area, there aren't a ton of good choices. Put this place on your list as somewhere worthy of a try! We took our party there on a recent Friday evening. The parking lot was packed, as was the bar and waiting area. Fortunately, we had called ahead and were immediately seated. On the way to our table, I noticed the generous salad bar. I was excited to give it a whirl. Our waitress was efficient, just not overly friendly or engaging. She dutifully took our drink orders and came back a short time later with our old fashioned drinks and a Tom Collins. The old fashioned were muddled, if that is a make-or-break for you. Everyone liked their drink. The menu was a solid supper club menu; a little something for everyone. Our party had two cod dinners, a walleye dinner and a ribs/chicken dinner. We then took a stroll to the salad bar. In addition to two soup (clam chowder, cheese) the actual salad portion offered a wide array of choices. It was very good. While dining, I also noticed it being frequently refreshed. Our meals came with good timing for the completion of our salads. Each of the fish dishes was well proportioned and was appropriately hot. Our ribs/chicken diner love their ribs. They waited an additional 25 minutes for their 1/4 chicken and said it wasn't worth the wait. Aside from the dining room being somewhat noisy, it was your standard northern Wisconsin supper club dining area. Overall, the service could have improved with a smile and a check on the need for a second round of drinks. I eventually requested a redo of water and did get a full pitcher in return. We had a great meal here after a long hike. Retro decor that borders on downscale but the food was excellently prepared from quality ingredients. The old-fashioned soup and salad bar was right out of 1995 (in a good way) in the selection of and appearance of the food. You will not regret getting the fish! The soup was also excellent. As seen in the photo, portions are generous. Service was warm but not distracting. Tables were widely spaced letting us get cozy and have private conversations. Visited the restaurant on a Friday evening for the advertised Prime Rib dinner. Arrived at 4 pm and was seated promptly (had a reservation). Drink order taken and brought to the table quickly. Ordered whiskey manhattan and would rate it at a 3 out of 5. It was quite harsh, not a good quality of whisky. Salad bar was fresh and adequate variety of items to choose. Five of our party ordered the prime rib medium rare. It was just warm and tough. Overcooked and not tender at all. Hard to cut and not much flavor. For the price of about 23.00 it was valued at 2 out of 5. Will not return! read more

As north woods places go, this one is pretty good! Our waitress Megan was an absolute delight. She was kind, patient, and helpful. Of the 7 of us, 6/7 had great meals. The last was so bad it was...I don't even know. The inside is kind of grandma's living room with the heavy curtains and low ceiling but I'm into it. We would definitely go again! read more

Appearances sure can be deceiving. You wouldn't expect a place that has a big sign saying they offer 'Great Steak & Swimmies' to actually serve EXCELLENT steak and seafood (and lake food, too.) But, they do. My parents and I took the trip to Haugen recently when I was up at my cabin in Chetek. My dad had came here with my maternal grandmother once, and has raved about it ever since, so my mother and I finally got to go, too. The decor isn't special, but it has it's charms. They have a salad bar, which allows me to enjoy a plate of salad that has bacon bits, sunflower seeds, and pasta salad (along with soup!) pre-meal. Honestly, I wish more places had salad bars. Is this a Wisconsin thing? I ordered an old fashioned, with Brandy as they do in the great state, and it was delicious. I also ordered their special seafood special. Shrimp, 2 huge prawns, and a giant piece of walleye. All entrees come with a potato side, so I got baby reds. The food was excellent. My dad's ribeye was a perfect rare, and my mom's fried walleye (really light breading) was good, too. Huge portions, too. I had a solid second meal with mine. All in all? When you're in this part of Wisconsin on a Friday night it's not a question of what you eat but where. Every eatery serves a fish special. Tonight it was broiled cod slathered with butter and I must say it was not too bad. The place was packed! All four of us had it! The only thing that was different was the potato. This place has the feel of an old supper club. The bar stools are old and need replacing, but the bar is horseshoe shaped and a great place to have a before dinner drink. The bartender was very friendly and everyone around the bar engaged everyone in their conversation. My husband and I had the traditional Friday night deep fried fish. The pieces were large and my hash browns were the homemade kind, not frozen. They have a salad bar with home made soup. Our soup was stuffed green pepper and it was delicious. If you still have room after all that food, you can make your own ice cream cone or sundae. The staff is friendly, the portions are generous, the price is right, and the food was very good. read more
