Country Thyme Cuisine has the BEST Oxtail platters with rice and peas and cabbage salad. The meat is very tender, tasty and flavorful. My Mother and I have been ordering it for many years, and it never disappoints. We would by two platters for each of us and it would also last a long time as they give good portions. I am not Jamaican, therefore, I do not speak Creole or Patois. I thought that the servers would not understand me or look at me like I have two heads but no, it wasn't like that. They were able to understand my requests without repeating myself. Their food is well made and well prepared. I thoroughly enjoy their oxtails and their curry goat. The interior of their restaurant is decent. The space is not too big but, it is suitable considering the food they sell and the number of customers they receive. Their wait time is roughly 3-5 minutes. Note to self: If you find yourself buying their food on Uber Eats or DoorDash, you may want to reconsider that option. I suggest that only because you you may not get what you specifically ask for most of the time. I understand that it's the culture, it's good to spice things up, that's how the food stands out. However, I cannot tolerate spicy food. It takes away from the food altogether. Food cannot be enjoyed if you cannot taste the food. They need to dial the spice back a few. If you are making food for the public, then you have to consider that not everyone is going to enjoy spicy food. I have no complaints about this play. Everyone ive ever recomended here loves this play. The food is good, and they arent stingy with the portion size. People always complain about carribean resturants always have bad costomer service or they look mean lol. Well for the most part they are nice-ish. Well they are never rude to me. Most patrons ordered takeout, but they have casual sit down seating as well as quick counter seating. I had slow cooked beef with tomatoes, carrots, and peepers over spinach rich and cabbage. The rice was outstanding. It was very similar to plov/pilaf rice. You could tell it was cooked over a long period of time because the flavors married perfectly. I could have ate entire plate of the rice alone. The cabbage was very soft. It had the texture of a half caramelized onion without any of the poignant character of an onion. The beef was pretty tender. I found the vegetables cooked with the beef to be extremely tender. And of course, everything came together well with thyme. The server suggested pairing the meal with one of their juices which was a good recommendation. I would advise against the fried dough balls unless you get them piping fresh. read more

I usually buy breakfast, for me and my mom, it's a good thing I tasted it before I gave her the salt fish taste like no salt was boiled out of it, I loved the food because it was not salty ( but I guess they changed chef) when since Jamaicans start cooking with sugar, salted fish and sugar taste nasty , our food used to stand out because we seasoned different. Best Jamaican oxtail I've had in NYC. Full of flavor. A slight kick. Perfectly stewed to fall off the bone (but not too much at the same time for perfect chewy tenderness). I get the oxtail every few weeks, and always take it to go. Comes with rice & peas and vegetables (such as cabbage and carrots). I see other people ordering other dishes, but I only know the oxtail. About $12/small platter and $14/large platter. Get the large for your money's worth. This is a a Caribbean hole in the wall in the Bronx. Anytime I want Jamaica food I go to country time. Their ackee and codfish is really good, I'd get it on Sunday mornings with green banana, sweet potato, yam and dumpling. It's not too spicy and well flavored. During the week the oxtail with rice and peas with cabbage and carrot is great as well. I find the staff to be quite friendly. The food is really good, especially the pasta dish they have on Fridays. There was a light brown skin lady who may not work their anymore, but she had an extremely bad attitude. Had stopped going there for almost a year because of this. Used to always buy several slices of their Coconut Pineapple cake at a time, which was really good, but the guy who makes the cake stopped making it when he got rebuffed when trying to flirt with a customer. He stopped making the Coconut Pineapple cake for a long time seemingly out of Spite!!! The manager of this store needs to keep an eye on the staff because I've heard several guys say the staff is rude and they stopped going there. There is another lady there now, maybe African, not sure, but she seems really nice. This is the first negative review I've written for a place after 17 reviews. In their defense, perhaps they believe it is obvious that if they have a "dining only" area the prices would be much higher if you eat in as opposed to taking out. The owner and server were not reasonable. They wanted to charge me $23 instead of $15 for what I ate, KNOWING that I asked to see a menu and the server said the food they had was displayed in the tray so they did not show me a menu, and I had no idea the sit-down service (where I ordered at the counter anyway and wasn't really "waited on" except for being given the food) was 50% more expensive. Not given a menu, I ate in the dining area and then when I asked to pay the server said prices were higher in the dining area and shocked me with a $23 bill instead of $15. Ridiculous. I love Jamaican food and I've never had an experience like that. Since I expected my bill to be far cheaper, and although she came and gave me my food, she didn't really "wait" on me and first thing off the bat at the register she told me I couldn't put the tip on the credit card so i put a couple bucks in the jar at the register (not having cash anyway and since she didn't really wait on me), then when I complained that the bill was unfair she told me my $2.00 in cash wasn't enough tip. Again, in their defense, maybe this set-up is far more common in Jamaica but I've never experienced anything like this in any Caribbean restaurants in New York. Those people were uncharacteristically RUDE and i suspect dishonest. Pretty good jerk chicken, macaroni and cheese was not great, though. read more

If I was solely rating the food, I would rate this restaurant 4 stars as the food is good and their portions are generous. So why 2 stars? The customer service here is a concern. The person taking our order was not pleasant to us, nor was she forthcoming with the food options. When we asked about soup options we were quickly told that it wasn't ready. This would have been okay had the customers after us not been told that they now had pea soup and chicken foot soup were available by the other server. Ok fine, maybe there was miscommunication and things would have been ok if there had been no other mishaps. The last straw was when we walked out of the restaurant only to be told by a customer waiting at the back of the line that they didn't give us the dumplings we ordered with our food. After I went back in to receive it, the worker handed me the food without a word, only to be told by that same customer that it happened to him 2 weeks prior. I've lived in this area for almost 30 years and I went to this restaurant knowing that there were others just as good in the area, one being literally ONE block away. I hope my experience was an isolated one and that this is not a common occurrence. read more
