I was really impressed by the facilities and layout of the place-- much larger on the inside than it looked on the outside. There was the large dance area with mirrored wall, plenty of folding chairs we could use, a large lobby with places to sit and wait for the previous class to finish up, even a quiet booth on the far side, and a little nook with a fridge and microwave. The fun-colored neon lighting was a nice visual touch, coupled with the ability to play music on the sound system really set the mood! The owner was very helpful about making us feel welcome, getting us set up, and letting us know where everything was and how to use the facilities. The only two things that could have been better were the cramped parking lot with limited spaces, and the single occupant bathroom. It was a really nice bathroom, but there was only the one so it caused a wait to use it. Would definitely rent this space again!!

The website is awful. You sign up, it takes your payment information and has warnings about no-show…read morepolicies. I show up to my first class. No record of my registration for the class. I'm not offered to take the class. The girl at the desk says check your email. I check my email, and it says you have to link your account. So why does the website have you select a class, lead you to believe you're paying for it, and show you enrolled? Maddening. I was always so interested in taking a class but always thought the website was absurd. I now have to make sure money isn't taken out of my account, and I don't show as a no- show for a class I wasn't welcomed to join. I was so looking forward to a great dance experience. What a disappointment.

Veronica ended up being one of the best pole instructors I've ever experienced. She was so fast to connect to me and my goals and understood instantly my ability and previous experience on the pole and in dance. She then was able to teach the techniques she laid out for me in a way she knew I needed to learn them, and installed the exact concepts and methods she knew I needed for were I wanted to go. Unlike many other experiences with classes and studios, this experience left me feeling like I just walked out with a super charged download of pole skills versus the usual feeling of wasted time and little progress I've felt with other trainings. The studio itself is set up so perfectly too. The whole design and layout of the dance room is really interesting bc it's so warm inviting and elegant yet intimate and professional at the same time. Every little detail of the whole studio is done to perfection. She's also incredibly helpful when it comes to providing exercises for people who have had injuries in the past and really tries to accommodate every member of the classes individual needs. The fitness classes are great but this place doubles as a sort of community event space with dance parties on weekends, workshops, and awesome art shows with local musicians and artists. When I was a young buck and studied dance in New York, and then moved to Texas, I thought, "I may never again have the quality of instructor, studio, or experience that New York afforded me." I was right for about 15 years. Learning how to tap dance under some pretty important people of the Broadway community left me with some coveted instruction and great memories. I have been starved for this sort of quality ever since. Upon entering any dance studio, your experience can go a lot of different ways. Here are some of them that Tapestry steers clear from: 1. Calling itself a dance studio, but really it's a romper room where kids learn to shuffle step and walk on tippy toes. They often get a sticker after class. 2. Posing as a dance company, but really it's a place where dancers teach classes in between paid gigs, which they'd rather be doing, thereby leaving students with uneven instruction in terms of theory or common purpose. They often make their money with their annual Nutcracker fund raiser, which is usually a snooze fest. 3. Working as a theatre and school all in one, but the dance spaces are often overbooked, and the whole operation disorganized, and possibly underfunded or under staffed. When you really want to study - from no matter what level you begin (for me, I am a making a return to the art form), it's generally pretty hard to find a dance studio, which is also a company, that teaches a consistent method across all levels, and all teachers echo this method. How is it that this jewel is among us in Austin, I must ask. In a few weeks, I have re-learned lots of old steps, learned at what level I can fully function, where I can be challenged, that I can weave in and out of different classes but remain consistent in style, and I can do it for a good price. Tapestry really affords every level of dancer - pee wee to someone like me (middle aged has-beens with delusions of youth), late bloomers to accomplished performers a very good space to get educated or re-educated. I am loving my new foray into the art form and that I can leave challenged but still thinking that "I still got it." Yes, I think I can dance.

Pilates class at Ballet Austin with Vlada has been the part of my fitness routine that I look…read moreforward to the most. In fact, I site my Pilates classes as the main reason I can't leave Austin. Vlada is so knowledgeable about the human anatomy and the reformer. She makes modifications for injuries and is always patient and understanding when you can't quite get a move or your form is off. She NEVER makes you feel like a bother, in fact, when you apologise for making a mistake she says "I'm here to help you, you don't need to apologise." Also, I'm familiar with the adage "not everything has to be about race" but as a black woman (oftentimes the only black person) in predominantly white spaces, I'm usually feel othered or ignored but not here, ever. That is the main reason I will forever sing the highest for Vlada. I felt like I was seen as a human being first and foremost and my colour didn't affect how she saw me or treated me. I've gotten stronger and I've been able to apply the techniques I've learned in Pilates to my other workouts. It has sculpted my body and improved my form. Pilates is the best activity I've ever done and I can't wait to further learn and improve. I also look forward to seeing Michael at the front desk, we always have a laugh Thank you Ballet Austin!
